MESSAGE FROM THE EXALTED RULER
Dear Fellow Elks,
This will be my last message to you as Exalted Ruler. It does not seem possible
that my year is almost over!
This has been an exciting and enjoyable year. My primary focus was to restore the
financial viability of the Lodge, and I believe we have made some progress in
this area that will ensure our long-term future.
We also committed that the dues increase last year would be
used to improve the Lodge infrastructure. We have installed new kitchen equipment and will lay new carpeting in the dining/meeting room early in February – long overdue.
We have continued to support our veterans and those in need both locally and further afield. Remember, this is a Benevolent Order committed to the improvement of those who are less
fortunate than ourselves. We need to continually remind each other that that is the focus of who we are as Elks.
Since becoming an Officer, each year I have seen a dedicated
core of volunteers without which this Lodge would not survive. The events we hold do not happen magically by themselves. I
challenge each of you to do more to help with the day-to-day running of the Lodge.
I would also like to thank my fellow Officers, Committee Chairs,
and those members who have supported me during the year.
Finally, it has been a privilege to serve as your Exalted Ruler – I urge you to support our incoming Officers.
Thank you for your support.
Fraternally,
Malcolm Jaggard
Exalted Ruler

BRIDGE ANYONE?
Submitted by Lodge Member Roy Johnson, President Myrtle Beach Duplicate Bridge Center (MBDBC)
The Calabash Elks started hosting
duplicate bridge games back on Friday January 8, 2016, and will
be doing so every Friday after that. The games start at 10:15
a.m. and should finish around 2:00 p.m.
The games are American Contract Bridge
League (ACBL) Certified with an ACBL director presiding over the games.
Members of our lodge, who are duplicate
Bridge enthusiasts, are welcome to join them for a $3.00 fee. Anyone who comes will
achieve Master Points, but they will not be
able to keep them unless they are ACBL Members. The points will be recorded for
you, and will be given to you if you join ACBL.
If you are interested in a refresher course or just want to learn how to play duplicate
bridge please e-mail Roy Johnson at:

AND A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL!
Past Exalted Rulers’ Fundraiser Cruise To Cozumel and Key West
By Mary Lou and Jeffrey Salter
It was 6:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, December
6, 2015, and 27 members and friends of Elks Lodge ~ 2679 loaded their luggage and boarded a bus headed for Ft. Lauderdale, FL. We stayed
overnight in Vero Beach, FL and boarded the Celebrity Constellation on December 7, 2015. The
Constellation was all decorated for Christmas with poinsettias and Christmas trees.
For four-and-one-half days we enjoyed the
Cruising Life! Throughout the cruise it was easy to join other Lodge members for drinks in a lounge, or dine together. We made new friends
and had a wonderful cruise! On Wednesday, December 9, 2015 we arrived in Cozumel,
Mexico, and on Friday, December 11, 2015 we arrived in Key West, FL. In Cozumel there were
poinsettias planted in flower beds! A walk down Duval Street in Key West gave us the opportunity to shop and visit many of the famous bars.
On Saturday, December 12, 2015 we arrived back in Fort Lauderdale, FL, loaded the bus with lots of new purchases in hand, and headed North. We
spent the night in Brunswick, GA, and arrived in the parking lot of the Calabash Elks Lodge at 4:00
p.m. on Sunday afternoon December 13, 2015.
What happened on the cruise didn’t just stay on the Cruise! The memories and the good times we
had together came back to Calabash with us! It was a wonderful experience!
Many thanks to Frank Blue for organizing this Wonderful event.

THE TRAVELING GAVEL
By Ashley Buckwell
The Traveling Gavel is intended as a way to
spread brotherhood and hospitality among the Lodges
of our District.
The District Vice President has the obligation of visiting each Lodge, and in doing so, Lodges pass a Gavel from one Lodge to another until all the
Lodges have been visited.
On Monday December 14, 2015, the Calabash Lodge carried the Gavel to the Shallotte Lodge
and presented the Gavel to Shallotte Exalted Ruler Sal Gentile in a Christmas skit. Sal was asked to sit on Santa’s lap, who it turned out was
Calabash Exalted Ruler Malcolm Jaggard, and was presented with a present to unwrap, which lead
to the discovery of the Gavel. The delegation from Calabash received wonderful hospitality and a great meal. Much thanks go out to the Shallotte
Lodge.
