When this couple with two young childrenfirst found their La Jolla dreamhouse, itwas about two-thirds complete.
“We fell in love with the view,” said the home-owner, who wishes to stay anonymous. But after the couple bought the property in
2008 and drew up plans to finish the home, theyrealized they would need to go backward beforethey could go forward.“It was Mediterranean, but they preferred
something more modern,” said architect BillHayer, who was hired to complete the projectwith Hill Construction Company and interiordesigner Helene Ziman.‘”The biggest challenge was to change the de-
sign,” said Ryan Hill, president of the construc-tion company. To transform the Mediterranean design into
a contemporary one, the team added a coveredwalkway and bumped out the side of the garageto add geometric lines to the façade. Mahogany

kids,” the homeowner said. “Webuilt it with them in mind, butwe wanted something that cantransition into an adult house.”
Clean lines, large open spacesand aneutral color palette definethe interior.Visitors are greeted by an ab-
stract aluminum sculpture of anangel in the foyer, one of manyoriginal pieces of art throughout
the house, which the homeownersaid she collects from “all over.”Hayer said one of the goals
was to create large wall spacesfor the artwork. To that end,the main floor has 12-foot-highceilings. Recessed lighting and
architectural elements wereadded to the ceilings to defineeach space and visually reducethe scale of the home. The living room opens to a
pool area and sweeping viewsof the coastline. Stacked slidingglass doors provide a seamlesstransition to the exterior and al-low the view to take center stage.A grand piano occupies onecorner of the room. The roomis anchored by a large greengranite and koa wood fireplacewith strong horizontal lines fora contemporary look.
