(NAPSA)—You may care to givea warm welcome to these ideas thatcan help ensure that your home heat-ing system is in tip-top shape to han-dle the stress that cold weather canplace on a home.Start first by scheduling a

clean-and-check service call by aqualified technician. Not only willthis preventative maintenancehelp keep your system operatingoptimally when you need it most,it can help restore lost efficiency, lower utility bills, minimize re-pairs, improve capacity and ex-tend the life of your heatingequipment. No matter how energyefficient your furnace or heatpump was when it was installed, proper maintenance is needed tokeep it that way.

Expert’s Advice“When looking for a heating,

ventilation and air-conditioning[HVAC] contractor, it’s importantto ensure they have the propercredentials,” explains Tom Archer, heating product manager, Carrier.Leading residential contractors

gain their certification from threeprincipal organizations: the NorthAmerican Technician Excellenceprogram (NATE), the Air Condi-tioning Contractors of America(ACCA) or the Sheet Metal andAir Conditioning Contractors’National Association (SMACNA).“If the contractor you’ve found

is certified by one or more of theseorganizations, you’ve found a rep-utable business,” continuesArcher. “In addition, ask yourfriends and neighbors who they’veworked with in the past and howthey fared with the experience.”Understanding The InspectionOnce you’ve selected a rep-

utable contractor, schedule anappointment to have your homecomfort system inspected. Thisinspection should include checks toensure that airflow and drainageare unobstructed and monitors andelectrical connections are function-ing properly. A qualified contractorwill also check all components ofthe equipment, and inspect theignition mechanism, the flue draftand indoor airflow for maximumefficiency and the burner assemblyand heat exchangers to ensure allheating components are working tocapacity. Lastly, the technician willclean and lubricate all necessaryparts.Following the furnace inspec-

tion, the technician will alsoinspect any indoor air qualitycomponents you may have, includ-ing air purifiers or humidifiersand ventilators. The contractorwill then test the thermostat cali-bration and conduct start-and-runtesting to be sure your system isresponding properly to what your

house needs. Once testing is com-plete, the technician will confirmthat the safety controls are work-ing and effective. The final step of the visit should

be the replacement of the furnacefilter, as needed. Filter replace-ment is a key factor in ensuringefficient furnace operation. Notonly does your furnace need cleanair to function correctly, the filteris an important part of cleaningthe air going into your home. Plus,a dirty filter can restrict airflowand could cause the furnace tooverheat and shut down.

How Often Should YouChange Your Filter?

“Well, that depends,” saysArcher. “For instance, thick, highly pleated filters can trap par-ticles and contaminants for alonger period of time than thinnerfilters; similarly, furnaces with airfilters may only need to bechanged once or twice a year. However, if you use your furnacefan all year long to circulate air orif you have pet hair and dander inyour home, then you may need tochange the filter more frequently.Your technician will be able toassess the type of filter in yoursystem and outline a schedule foryou to check and replace itthroughout the year.”There is a lot to consider when

preparing for the cold, but withthe help of a credentialed, quali-fied technician, it can be a simple, straightforward process, and onethat can keep your home comfortsystem running efficiently andproperly throughout the year.

(NAPSA)—If you are like mostAmericans, you not only want tosave money at the grocery store, but you want to save time, too. Infact, in a recent survey conductedby SupermarketGuru.com, 25 per-cent of respondents said they haveresorted to grocery shoppingonline just to save time. How canyou be sure to get the best valuein the shortest time possible? Here are a few hints from PhilLempert, the Supermarket Guru, that can help:

•First, plan the timing ofyour shopping trip carefully. The supermarket’s busiest time isbetween 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., soavoid the supermarket “rushhour.”

•Use all your shoppingresources. Check the store’scirculars and use the latest tech-nology to help enhance your trip. For example, ReadySetEat.comnot only lets you plan your mealsand ingredients ahead of time, itinstantly shares what items areon sale at a retailer near you.

•Discounts are often worththe time spent seeking them.According to a Red Plum survey ofshoppers, 80 percent of consumerssurveyed spent up to three hourseach week looking for coupons, deals and savings from all sourcesand 81 percent said they saved upto $50 each week, or $2,600 a year.

•Frozen single-serve mealscan be cost effective. Frozenmeals such as Healthy Choice canbe a great way for those on a bud-get to eat more healthfully and

waste less food due to portion con-trol.

•Private brands can bevaluable. With their quality gen-erally comparable to leadingbrands, private brands are someof the best and most underusedfinds in the supermarket. Savingsvary, but the best deals in terms ofprice and quality include break-fast cereals, jams, cookies, pasta, sauces, dairy products, papergoods, and snacks like H.K.Anderson Pretzels and KangarooBaked Snacks.

•Consider frozen. When pro-duce is not in season, you canhead to the frozen and cannedaisles. Frozen fruits and veggiesare preserved at their peak ofnutritional value, and in season. For example, Hunt’s tomatoes gofrom farm to can within 24 hoursto lock in the fresh taste.

•Don’t assume the biggerpackage is the better deal. Con-sider the unit price on the shelf tagand buy what goes on sale. Pricing

surveys have shown that somename-brand merchandise costsless at major grocery chains thanat big warehouse stores.

•Finally, avoid waste. TheNatural Resources Defense Coun-cil estimates that more than 40percent of the food that Americansbuy goes to waste. To avoid waste, follow these simple tips:

•To help reduce your personalwaste, plan meals ahead of time, check expiration dates at the storeand opt for portion-controlledfrozen foods. Single-serve andfamily-size meals, such as MarieCallender ’s or Bertolli frozenmeals, are great examples of por-tion-controlled meals for yourselfor your whole family.

•Also, remember to store left-overs properly. Refrigerate below40° F within two hours or onehour during hot weather (90° Fand above). Place unused raw veg-etables in a sealable plastic bagand squeeze out excess air. Forunused canned ingredients, remove from the original can, putthem in a sealable container andcover tightly to maintain optimalflavor. Fresh vegetables should beblanched quickly in boiling water, drained and then placed in a bag.Poultry and meats can be frozenin their original wrappers, butthen placed in a freezer bag.

(NAPSA)—There’s hopeful newsfor the estimated 2.5 million Ameri-can men who are currently livingwith prostate cancer.i Recent stud-ies and analyses have demonstratedthat men with advanced prostatecancer are now living longer thanever.ii,iii While this is encouraging, managing the disease over a longerperiod of time may create physicaland emotional burdens for bothpatients and their caregivers.

ANew National SurveyA recent national survey of

advanced prostate cancer patientsand caregivers of men with ad-vanced prostate canceriv shedslight on some of the needs, con-cerns and priorities related to cop-ing with the disease. AstellasPharma US, Inc. and Medivation,Inc. commissioned the AdvancedProstate Cancer Patient and Care-giver Burden of Illness Surveythrough the research firm HarrisInteractive, and sponsored fourleading cancer advocacy and edu-cation organizations to collaborateon the initiative: the Association ofOncology Social Work (AOSW),CancerCare®, Prostate HealthEducation Network (PHEN), andUs TOO Prostate Cancer Educa-tion and Support Network.

A total of 91 men age 60+ withadvanced prostate cancer and 100caregivers of men with advancedprostate cancer completed thesurvey.

Patient ConcernsPatient respondents expressed

concern around their ability to con-tinue living their lives fully andabout becoming a burden. Sixty-three percent of patients who par-ticipated in the survey said they areconcerned or very concerned abouttheir ability to continue participat-ing in the activities they enjoy, and59 percent express this same levelof concern around becoming a bur-den to their family and friends. Bycomparison, 43 percent of patientrespondents have the same level ofconcern about dying.

Patients who participated inthe survey also expressed loneli-ness and feelings of isolation.Forty-one percent of patient par-

ticipants said they do not feel likepeople understand what they aregoing through in terms of manag-ing and treating their prostatecancer, and 45 percent report theykeep silent about their prostatecancer and treatments.

Caregiver ConcernsCaregivers who participated in

the survey (wives, partners, daughters, sons, etc.) expressed ahigh degree of stress associatedwith their roles. Eighty-five per-cent reported that caring forsomeone with prostate cancer cre-ates stress/anxiety related to theirpatient’s well-being, and 73 per-cent said there are days whenthey feel overwhelmed caring forsomeone with advanced prostatecancer. Interestingly, caregiverswho participated in the survey aremore concerned about helpingtheir loved one cope with thephysical and emotional effects ofadvanced disease than they areabout their own physical or emo-tional health.

“This survey provides valuable, quantitative information aboutthe current experience of a groupof patients and caregivers in theUnited States, and will help us

better support them as they copewith the disease over a greaternumber of years,” said RosalieCanosa, program division director,CancerCare.

Caregivers also expressed anx-iety about their long-term care-giving responsibilities. The aver-age caregiving duration reportedby survey participants wasnearly five years. Among thecaregivers surveyed, 73 percentsaid they are concerned or veryconcerned about their ability tocontinue providing care over along period of time.

“These findings suggest thatpatients and caregivers could ben-efit from more comprehensivesupport and a forum in which toshare their true feelings about thedisease,” said Canosa. “We encour-age men with advanced prostatecancer and their caregivers toseek support to help them feelheard and understood.”
