Mission Statement “The South African Magazine shall provide current, high quality, relevant editorial

on subjects relating to the links between South Africa and New Zealand. It shall be the vehicle for SA immigrants living in NZ to integrate socially with

their own community and to advertise their products and services.”

This month we have an article from John Key reporting on his campaign promises. So far The National Government has made many changes in difficult times and we are encouraged that businesses are starting to get

the respect that they deserve (Finance companies excluded). Let’s not forget the loyal farmer who puts food on our table every day. This group of very hard working individuals will largely be responsible for helping New Zealand claw its way out of the recession. New Zealand is a resilient country and we all need to be positive and make a difference each day to improve what we do in a more proactive, effective and efficient way. This goes for everyone who has a job. Do your best all the time and increase your productivity. It is the only free resource we have that can make a huge difference to our economy. Imagine if every working individual in New Zealand, no matter what job he does, increases his productivity by only 10%. This could have the effect of a company making either a profit or a loss.

This month instead of a restaurant review I have decided to review a great book on positivity. It is called the “Secret” and challenges the law of attraction and how it works.

Last month we had the hot dog story. If you have been made redundant do not feel despondent you are amongst many others. Rewrite your CV and highlight your strengths and the new work experience that you have acquired in New Zealand. Go to interviews with a renewed positive & confident attitude. Remember employers want to employ the best person for the job not someone that has lost their confidence and begs for a position or someone who is overconfident to the point of arrogance.

I would like to say thank you to Norma Vaz who has joined the team in advertising. I would like to congratulate her on a great job done. Those of you who have met her will agree. She has a great positive attitude and smoothes over any of the little hitches we have in publishing a magazine of this quality. Richard Pearce has established a South African Social group that will be organising functions and meetings. Keep an eye out for his social dates.

Please support our advertisers and press on in 2009.

South AfricanA MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE pRIME MINISTER

Many New Zealanders are worried about their jobs, our economy, and what the future holds. They are right to

be concerned. We are experiencing a global downturn on a scale not seen in over a generation.

This has big implications for our small, open economy – falling export volumes, lower growth rates, struggling businesses, and climbing job losses.

Despite this, I believe we are in a much better position than many people think.

Yes, we are in for a rough patch. But while we’ve spent lots of time dwelling on our problems, we’ve not spent enough time looking at our opportunities.

I’m confident we can come through this recession more strongly than many countries, and that these tough times can be a springboard for better times ahead.

There are five reasons for this.First, our banking system is in better

shape than many countries. Our banks have been relatively conservative, and thanks to the Government’s retail and wholesale banking guarantees, the credit lines are not broken.

In many parts of the world credit has dried up. Here, credit has continued to grow. In the year to January, credit to households grew by 4%, to agriculture by 23%, and to other businesses by 12%.

This gives us a head-start in the fight for economic growth.

Secondly, our monetary and fiscal policy settings have responded well.

The Official Cash Rate had a long way to fall and has dropped quickly. The cuts have flowed through into fixed and floating mortgage rates.

In the US and UK, fixed rate mortgages are down only around 1.5%, but here they’re down more like 3%, with floating rates down up to 4%.

Economists predict that if our rates hold at current levels, the cost to households of paying off their mortgages will drop by about $4 billion. That’s $4 billion freed up for growth-enhancing investment.

On top of that, our fiscal stimulus, including tax cuts and increased government expenditure, is among the biggest in the world.

What’s more, our stimulus is likely to get more bang for the buck than the package in, say, the US, because it’s going into the productive economy through tax-cuts to workers and more infrastructure spending, rather than into financial bail-outs. That’s good for consumer and business confidence.

Thirdly, what we sell to the world is still in demand. In tough times people still eat, but don’t buy so many luxury cars or

electronics. Some exporting countries have been hit hard. In Japan, for example, car exports

have dropped 70% in the past year. But our export base is still largely driven by commodity products. Prices for

our goods have fallen but demand is still there, and the exchange rate is acting as buffer. Producers of things like sheep meat, venison, and niche manufacturing

goods are getting better incomes with a lower dollar. Fourthly, we are well-positioned in the world. The US and the UK are being particularly hard-hit by the downturn, but

Australia and parts of Asia may be coping better, and may recover more quickly.Australia and Asian countries are among our biggest trading partners. We

have free trade arrangements with many of them and are negotiating agreements with others. If Asia leads the race to economic recovery then we are well-placed.

Finally, New Zealand’s macro-economic settings mean we are able to react quickly to the crisis and adapt to a changing global economy.

Our firms have had to favour efficiency over subsidies for some time. Most of our workers have been employed in more than one job, career, or industry, and have transferable skills. Many skilled Kiwis who have chosen to work overseas are likely to return.

These five factors – the health of our banking system, our monetary and fiscal policies, our export-base, our position in the world, and our capacity to adapt – are a good base for recovery.

As Prime Minister, I am determined to build on these strengths so that when the world starts growing again, we are running faster than the countries we compete with.

But just as important as these factors is our attitude.

We’re not a country of whiners, slackers, or selfish individuals. We’re a gritty nation with the smarts and determination to weather this storm. We know how important it is to look after each other and give back to the communities that make us.

In short, we have what it takes to rise above our predicament. It’s this, more than anything else, which is the best prospect for our jobs, our economy, and our future.

WE pRESENT pART FOUR OF THIS FASCINATING SERIES WRITTEN by HEATHER DOUGlAS.

One of the biggest disadvantages of working for oneself from home is that home businesses have often been

seen as something less than a “real” business. That perception is changing and more people, in a wide variety of occupations, are giving up the unnecessary overheads of premises and moving their businesses back home. Home business really has come of age, but it still has to shake off the last of the legacy of misconception that surrounds working from a home environment.

So how, then, does a home business create - or rather, earn - credibility?

Self-imageHow you think of yourself and your business will have enormous impact

on your credibility. Project a positive self-image and most others can’t help but believe in you, too.

Think big from day oneBehave - from the very first day - as if you are successful, and you will earn

credibility. Having and projecting a clear vision for your business, and creating quality systems and processes from the beginning are powerful ways to enable your business to grow to meet your ideals.

ImageEvery business card, letterhead, email message, presentation, brochure,

document, etc., reveals to your client how you view your business. Cost is a factor, but spending money on your image is a necessary and worthwhile investment.

professionalismAnswer the phone in a businesslike manner, dress appropriately, be punctual

for meetings, return calls and emails, honour promises and deadlines, and don’t badmouth the competition.

Keep family and work commitments separate Kids squabbling in the background of a business call, discussing a project

with a client with the breakfast dishes on the table, or driving into a customer’s

Running a home business in New Zealand

premises with piles of unwashed laundry on the back seat of your vehicle don’t instil confidence no matter how good your product or service.

Quality of workBe your own quality controller! Hone your expertise, if necessary. Turn down

work if you are too busy or it’s not your thing, or find a way to involve others to provide a timely, high-quality, complete service.

Charge what you are worthWhat you charge will reflect on your business - a business which is thought

of as “cost-effective” or “offering value for money” - or even “dear, but worth the investment” - will be much more credible than one which is “cheap”.

build relationshipsAbove all, your relationships with your customers will contribute to your

credibility. Honour the old adage about under-promising and over-delivering, be honest, pro-active, and a player on your customer’s team.

Dear peter,

I just had to write and tell you what a marvellous article on emigration that was by Eve Hemmings for the Natal Witness … it is always good to know that you are not the only person who feels like this – I often think if you knew what the pain was going to be like you might not have done it in the first place!! It is good to read something that speaks the truth.

Thank you for your wonderful magazine. You are doing such a good job.

We have a new addition to the team at The South African Magazine. Our

advertising department is now headed up by Norma, who has spent most of her working life in an advertising environment. Norma has worked for newspapers and magazines, both here and in South Africa. Norma’s career in the publishing sector started with her first job at Martin Creamer’s Engineering News in Johannesburg in the late 80’s. She has also worked for the Wine-of-the-Month Club in Cape Town, helping them to start up their

magazine. In addition, Norma has also worked for Media24, the advertising department of “Die Beeld” newspaper in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, before moving to Auckland, New Zealand two and a half years ago.

If you want to reach the thousands of South African readers that we have here in New Zealand, as well as lots of Kiwis who enjoy the great read, Norma is the person to speak to. She can also co-ordinate your ad-production and can advise you on the best ways to advertise your products or services in our successful magazine.

Norma can be reached on 021-043 7342 or e-mail [email protected]

Noeline, who is a sound therapist with training from Paris and Cape Town, deals with cases of children who have

learning and behavioral difficulties such as low muscle tone, ADD, ADHD, Asperges and Autism. She works from a clinic called Mother Well in Mt.Eden with Pediatrician Dr.Leila Masson. Noeline believes in a multi disciplinary approach and so works closely with other practitioners.

She does a two hour long assessment and in that time she does a listening test, tree test, brain profile and a detailed case history. No one is obliged to follow the assessment using sound therapy. The assessment alone is very informative. The brain profile gives her a blue print of how that individual copes under stress. Many of us do different things under stress compared to when we are relaxed. It is important for parents and teachers to have this information in order to assist a child who is having learning difficulties. The sound therapy is based on the work of Prof. Tomatis, who discovered that the music of Mozart has a profound affect on our brain function. To read more about this you can visit her website at www.family-focus.co.nz.

Noeline has been doing this work since 1994. She would like to see many of these centres opening up all over New Zealand and would like to train others to run centres for themselves. She is the first Tomatis therapist here in

New Zealand who is doing this work with children. Over the years she has had incredible results with children and would love to help more NZ families.

Noeline is also a qualified Alexander technique teacher, after having trained in Israel in 1987 and has been involved in teaching since 1990. The Alexander technique is about educating individuals on how to use their bodies with less tension and stress. She works with people who have repetitive stress injury, neck and back problems. She also assesses work spaces and exercise programmes. She is now working from a Clinic in Remuera two days a week. The Alexander technique has been around for over a hundred years and is highly effective. Over the years she has worked with performers such as Wendy Oldfield and actors such as Michael Depinna. Many South Africans may remember him from the Vodacom adverts. Although the technique is frequently used by performers it can benefit anyone who has trouble with tension in their necks, backs and shoulders.

Noeline, her husband Robin, her daughter Sarah and her son Marc emigrated to New Zealand from Johannesburg , South Africa in December last year. Noeline is very passionate about the work that she does and knows that she can help others find a solution to their difficulties.

Two of her clients from Johannesburg now live on the North shore in Auckland and both are

willing to give testimony to the service that Noeline provides. Her contact details are [email protected] or 021 052

EARly CHIlDHOOD EDUCATION

New Zealand has a wide range of early childhood services. Many are run by private operators, community church

groups and voluntary agencies.Unlike primary and secondary schools, not all of these services automatically

receive state funding. As a general rule, state funding is provided only if the service is licensed and has a ‘charter’ that formally sets out educational policies. Licensing standards are set by the Ministry of Education. Criteria include minimum ratios of staff to children and restrictions on class sizes. The centres are regularly monitored by the Education Review Office (ERO) - www.ero.govt.nz

The Ministry of Education provides local contacts and advice on the range of early childhood services available. This service is free. Your neighbours, local Citizens Advice Bureau or Plunket (see our Health section) can also be useful sources of information.

The following helpful guides, published by ERO and the Ministry of Education are available free:

• What Counts as Quality in Early Childhood Centres (ERO) • Choices in Early Childhood Education

KindergartensKindergartens provide early childhood education for children from the age

of three to five years. Some have waiting lists – children can be placed on the waiting list from the age of two years.

Children attend either morning or afternoon sessions. Morning sessions are usually held five times a week and afternoon sessions three. Sessions are informal and focus on developing social skills and learning through play. Most kindergartens have two to three trained teachers. However, parents are expected to help out both with class supervision and with fundraising and committee work.

Most kindergartens open from 8:45am to 11:45am and from 12:45pm to 3:30pm. They do not charge fees, but a donation is generally expected.

Education and care centresEducation and care centres offer full-day or sessional (up to four hours

a day) care and are open for up to eight or nine hours (between 7:30am and 6:00pm).

Some centres offer care in morning or afternoon sessions. Usually, care is charged on the basis of a weekly or daily fee – an hourly fee applies for casual care. Centres are licensed to take either under two-year-olds, over two-year-olds or a mix of both age groups. This applies to both standard facilities and specialist childcare centres such as those run by Montessori and Rudolph Steiner schools.

play centresPlay centres are run as parent co-operatives, and parents are closely involved

in both running the centre and working with the children during session times. Individual play centres arrange their own session times with one to 10 sessions per week. Children can attend up to five sessions per week. The fees are set by each centre, and parents run the sessions on a roster. Parents can undertake training for supervising sessions at a play centre.

Home-based careThis service provides supervised, home-based care for very small groups of

children. This is sometimes referred to as family day-care. Care is provided in the local caregiver’s home.

Family day-care fees are charged on an hourly rate and the times are flexible

– they can include evenings and weekends to help parents who work irregular hours.

Nannies Nannies are listed in the Yellow Pages. A wide range of services are available. Although certification is not required, most nannies are professionally trained.

Correspondence SchoolIn special circumstances, the Correspondence School provides early

childhood education for children under the age of six. This is provided in cases where children either live in remote areas, are sick or disabled, do not have a settled address or have special needs.

pacific Island Early Childhood CentresThere are approximately 70 Pacific Island Early Childhood Centres located

throughout New Zealand. Most are attached to community churches or schools. Some centres are free but others charge around $80 a week.

pacific Island Early Childhood GroupsThese groups are more relaxed and informal. They usually require a high

level of parent involvement and some may also ask for a small donation. There are about 170 groups across New Zealand. Like the Early Childhood Centres, these are usually located in either community churches or social centres. Many of the groups are open for only three hours a day, a few days a week. Further information is available from the Ministry of Education.

playgroups These run community-based play programmes for children. parents are required to supervise their children during sessions. Some playgroups also provide programmes that focus on pre-serving the language and culture of new migrants. Information on these groups is available from the Ministry of Education.

Children with special needsIn New Zealand, it is against the law for any educational institution to treat

a student differently because they have a disability. Services for children and young people with special needs are provided by the Ministry of Education. Its early intervention teams offer family-focused support to young children with developmental needs from birth until they are settled at school. Services are provided by teams with specialist skills.

Local offices of the Special Education Services are listed at the front of The White Pages or freephone 0800 622 222.

PROMOTIONAL ARTICLE

Keep your kids on track, even during the slack periodsDuring the school holiday, it is important that children have time to relax and enjoy quality time with their family. However, parents also want to ensure that their children don’t slip back academically, and are ready to move ahead when the new school term begins.

At the Kip McGrath Education Centres we offer the following advice for parents who want to help keep their

children interested in learning while on their holiday:-1. Participate in your child’s time off. The effect that a parent’s

involvement has on a child’s learning process is profound. As a parent, being part of your child’s learning experience raises your child’s self-esteem and helps him or her achieve true growth.

2. Work with your child. Performing tasks and doing chores are great ways to approach learning sensibly. Find fun and engaging jobs around the house, particularly ones that will create family togetherness. Break down complex tasks into simple steps. As the child accomplishes the task, he or she will feel the rewards of completion and a higher sense of self-confidence.

3. Learning activities. Museums and exhibitions are a great way to involve your child with hands-on learning. Help your child select a theme or topic to focus on before you go to the event, and discuss the things they saw and did after your visit. If you’re going to the movies let them figure out or assist in calculating how much the tickets/snacks will cost, check the listing or call to find out when the movie begins, make a plan for getting there on time by figuring out what time to leave and more.

4. Make a special occasion of trip. Involve your child in planning for trips. Have them research activities, places to visit and history before a trip. Don’t over-burden them, but ask them to act as your guide on the trip. Have younger children read road signs, and encourage older children to keep a travel journal. Writing captions for a photo album, creating a video slide show or family scrapbook is a worthwhile responsibility.

5. Read and Write. Ask your child to read at least 30 minutes a day,

and encourage them to keep a daily diary or journal. Make sure that reading materials are available in your home, not only books, but also interesting and appropriate magazines and newspapers.

6. Extra Tuition. Many education centres stay open when schools are closed for the holidays, so parents can schedule supplemental instruction to keep their children on track, or to help their children catch up in school. Kip McGrath Education Centres will be offering holiday “booster” courses. Parents who would like additional information or are concerned about a specific aspect of their child’s academic performance can call 0800 TUTORING or their local Kip McGrath Centre.

THE SOUTH AFRICAN MUSIC SCENE

How do we describe this man who defied the mores of his time by becoming Southern Africa’s first bilingual

top ten musical hitmaker?Afrikaans songs like “Sarie Marais” and “Jan Pierrewiet” were regarded

as “too square” for the emerging South African youth of the 1980’s who aspired to English and American influences and were surrounded by the sounds of The Pet Shop Boys, Talking Heads, Wham and maybe Wet, Wet, Wet.

When David Kramer launched his first few songs in the 1980’s, a bilingual South African youth pricked up its ears and finally admitted that culture was stronger than condition!

In those days we had young men being hauled by the trainload to our troubled borders in South West Africa and Mocambique where wars were being waged and times were hard. English speaking school leavers were mixing with pure Afrikaans speaking youngsters and unfortunately the spirit was one of division along the lines of language and culture.

But then a genius from the dusty back streets of Worcester in the Western Cape came along and started singing bilingual songs!

Fortunately I was not involved in the South African Bush War of the 1980’s but I have heard many stories of troop trains that have pulled into remote parts of our old country like Beaufort West and Upington; and as the mixed white culture soldiers tumbled out of the coaches onto the barren station

platforms they were all singing David Kramer songs!Strains of “Daar kom die manne van die Royal Hotel” and “Vat hom

Dawie” from Kramer’s repertoire, kept the troops in top spirits. This man had no notion that he would cement the Englishman and the

“Boer” in those days with his songs, where war dictated that culture could never be a barrier between soldiers fighting for the same cause.

Both of his songs “Royal Hotel” and “Blokkies Joubert,” a portrait of a has-been Springbok rugby player, rocketed to No 1 on the South African Top Ten hit charts within days of their release and subsequent airplay on the radio stations.

In 1983 David was contacted by Volkswagen South Africa to link his idiosyncratic South African image to their latest creation, the Volkwagen Microbus. Kramer’s comedic antics in this series of advertisements endeared him to the ‘people’ and obviously had a spin off in the sales of the vehicle!

Kramer applied his genius to the stage by producing hugely successful musicals like “District Six,” “Fairyland,” “Crooners” and “Kat and the Kings,” which ran for repeat seasons on the South African circuits as well as on Broadway, where his collaborations with local man Taliep Pietersen won international critical acclaim.

These stage productions epitomized South African culture, and although Kramer

was white, these shows often exposed the raw underbelly of the survival tactics of poor Cape Coloureds; always with hilarious results.

In 1997, “Kat and the Kings” was transferred to the West End of London where it won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. From there it opened at the Cort theatre on Broadway in 1999 and was nominated for three Drama Desk Awards and a Drama League Award.

I n 2 0 01 K r a m e r traveled around the barren areas of the Karoo, Cape, recording the sounds of the musicians that he came across during his travels across this sparsely populated area of Southern Africa. He labeled it as “Karoo Kitaar Blues” and he showed a number of unheard-of musicians who became overnight stars.

This production was awarded two South African First National Bank Vita awards for its honest exposure of the untapped musical talents of the South African coloured people living in remote areas. In addition, “Karoo Kitaar Blues” recently won the Golden Reel Award for Best Musical Documentary at the 2008 Tiburon International Film Festival in California, USA.

He has recently collaborated with Cape Coloured Marc Lottering, who is a new aspiring star on the stand-up comedy scene, by directing three of his stage performances.

As a tribute to his 20 year partnership with Taliep Pietersen, and to honour his memory, a production called the “Kramer Pietersen Songbook” was staged at the Baxter Theatre in the summer season of 2006/7. It ran the full season at full house every night. He was subsequently awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Cape Town.

David, you are a star that has blazed over Southern Africa during the most difficult years of its history, and you have told its story well.

We salute you, die “Wonder” van Worcester!

HOWZAT!

THE PROTEAS have often been dubbed as the “best cricket team in the world” or “the best team NEVER to have won

the Cricket World Cup,” so their reputation has become renowned in cricket history.

Their fortunes have changed over the years and often silly errors have cost them the ultimate crown of cricket glory, the World Cup. This is unfortunate, because the South African Cricket Team have always been the leaders in international competitions, before and after the draconian laws of the ICC banned them from playing on the cricket world stage because of apartheid.

bUT TODAy THEy CAN CElIbRATE! The Southern Hemisphere teams of India,

Sri Lanka, Pakistan, New Zealand , West Indies etc have always been keen competitors, but Australia has always been the team that the Proteas have found the most difficult to beat.

They have at last made a major breakthrough in their endeavours to prove themselves once again as one of the best teams in the world by trouncing Australia on THEIR OWN TURF in their recent tour of Australia over the December 2008/January 2009 cricket season.

They comfortably beat Australia 2-1 in the 5 day test matches and 4-1 in the one day internationals.

We saw Graeme Smith being whacked on his left hand by a stray ball during the third of the 5-day tests which resulted in a major injury that didn’t deter his indomitable spirit, because he came on in the ODI’s to bowl a few overs to prove that he could still do it, despite losing the use of his left hand. He could retire gracefully, because his total of 108 in the first innings of the test match put SA back in the history books.

The gap left by retiring captain Graeme was more than ably filled by newcomer Johan Botha who is a superb all-rounder from the Warriors team in SA, with a right handed bat and a right-arm medium speed bowl that served him well in the ODI’s and brought ultimate victory to the touring side in their 4-1 defeat of Australia. He is a humble man, always placing himself

Great moments in South African sportBy ted Woodberg

amongst the lower order of batsmen when featuring as captain.Other newcomers like Lonwabo Tsotsobe, a giant of a man, with a left

handed medium bowl that left the Aussies standing; have proved that South Africa still has what it takes to become the top team in the world. Lonwabo stepped onto the turf in his maiden ODI with the Proteas and in his first over he took the valuable wicket of middle-order batsman Shaun Marsh without

even working up a sweat!Lonwabo went on to take 4 unbelievable

wickets for only 50 runs in the last ODI of the series.

Look out, Makhaya Ntini. You are no longer the only black man in the squad. Besides Tsotsobe, we also have Monde Zondeki, right arm fast bowler who is yet to prove his prowess. To date, the Proteas are blessed to have ten specialist bowlers excluding all-rounders like Jacques Kallis, Johan Botha and Albie Morkel.

The SA team will go on to play a further series of matches at home against Australia

from February through to April this year. With a home advantage we can only hope that our team continues on its victorious streak.

Currently South Africa leads the tables in One Day Internationals which is an incredible feat considering how powerful the new squad from India has become. I can’t wait to see the Proteas up against India. They crushed England last year at home in India and I rank them as currently the best all-round team in the world. The tour of New Zealand by India in March/April this year should be interesting; however, India will prove to be formidable foes.

Keep up the good work, Proteas!! You have made us all hugely proud of you. Good luck against Australia at home.

How Jeanco came about in SA

In 1998 I started sell ing jewellery from home, at

offices, and through parties. Very soon I realized that there was a great need for custom designs and repairs. I started offering the service, but had to source a reliable person to do my trade-jobs. The frustration of jobs being late or instructions simply

ignored, steered me into wanting to learn to do it myself. I knew what and how I wanted it, but just needed some training. In 1999, I started studying jewellery part time (at Baldwin No 5 Jewellery art studio – Linki van Zyl).

The business grew to the point that I opened a jewellery store on 12 may 2005. Unfortunately, my dream and our lives were under constant threat from criminal activity which was affecting everybody in Johannesburg.

I also belonged to the JCSA (The Jewellery Council of South Africa). They too, started sending e-mails with security camera pictures of armed and dangerous robbers warning us to be on the lookout for them. This became a great concern, yet we stayed put and did our best as far as security was concerned. We had safes, burglar proofing, regulated steel gates, and even a security guard outside our door. We were in constant awareness of the dangers.

In April 2007, it finally happened. 5 armed men robbed my shop at 9:15 in the morning just after opening for the day, while I was on my way to collect tools and equipment that I had purchased. Three of my staff members were in the shop at the time; one of them was my mother.

At about 9:30 it was all over, and we gave a sigh of relief that nobody was harmed or injured. My mother’s words were those of forgiveness, and she even commented that the robbers were nice. I can only believe that it was by God’s grace that my mom, Tersia, had the wisdom and courage to call on the Lord’s name as she realized what was going on.

That was it. Our family was threatened. One year later we had sold the shop, and here we are in our new home: New Zealand!

The immigration processMy husband, Juan and I decided to pack up and make New Zealand our

new home. We have 4 children: Juan-Dre (16), Chaznel (9), Jessica-Jayne (8), and Dudley-James (4). We felt that we owed it to them to take the opportunity for a less threatened future.

Juan, my husband was also self-employed in SA, and for our survival, he had to conform to the thinking and submission of working for another man’s dreams and visions. He had to make a conscious decision to be a loyal and faithful employee, no matter what. Out of all of us, he had to make the biggest sacrifice, and give up his personal hopes and dreams to save our family, yet in it, Juan has found new hope.

We were used to a comfortable life: luxuries, space and servants. And, suddenly, we had to count the pennies, clean, cook and do the washing and ironing. This has taught us to appreciate the little things in life more.

Today, I am grateful, no longer proud. We are able to reach out to others in need, because we know what it is like to be in need.

Jeanco - New ZealandWhen we first arrived in NZ, I also worked for another company to get the

The success story of Jeanco Jewellers

Kiwi-experience. I very soon realized that it is impossible for me to be a full-time mother and work a full day every day.

I started Jeanco in October 2008, and we have now settled in our new home in 234 Forrest Hill Road, Forrest Hill. It works very well, with the company being down stairs in front, and our house up stairs. I feel confident, as the business grows, that I will be able to carry on with my passion as a designer and jeweller, and also have a balanced and healthy family life.

I am also delighted to say that Juan shares my passion as a jeweller. He created our website and is becoming very involved in the business.

Adventures in a new worldWe present the first in a new series of articles aimed at the new immigrant who wants to see and experience the incredible beauty and serenity of this Pacific island paradise …. New Zealand.

Set against a backdrop of magnificent snow capped mountain ranges, this inland mass of water, originally

created some 2000 years ago by a huge volcanic eruption, is the largest lake in Australasia and has become one of the most sought after holiday destinations in New Zealand because of its majestic scenery and pristine environment.

The eruption that created Taupo was so powerful that it was detected and recorded by the ancient Romans and Chinese as it sent huge clouds of fiery red ash into the atmosphere, creating a cosmic phenomenon in the year 186 AD.

Today it is a placid lake of incredible beauty, attracting tourists from all parts of the world.

Besides the natural attractions of water skiing, boating, and hiking in the surrounding hills, Taupo boasts some of the best trout fishing in the world. It

also has the biggest natural snow skiing area in New Zealand, where tourists can get on the ski slopes at all times of the year.

Taupo is set right in the middle of New Zealand’s North Island, just three and a half hours’ drive from Auckland and a leisurely 5 hours drive from Wellington.

It is linked by a commercial airport between these two major cities making access to this wonderful venue even easier.

There are a number of tourist centres scattered around the lake that offer a wide range of facilities to the ardent tourist including white-water rafting, kayaking, bushwalking and 4x4 bike tours. Being naturally set in a volcanic region, Taupo has a number of geothermal areas that have lovely hot mineral pools that work miracles on your body when you decide to enter the waters and wade around.

To find out more about this amazing holiday venue go straight into www. Lake Taupo NZ and you will not be disappointed!

burger Oosthuizen of “burger’s Motors”SOUTH AFRICAN BUSINESSMEN IN NEW ZEALAND

Why, do you ask? Well, for a start , he is

from Pinetown, Natal, South Africa, and his technical staff is made up of Hamish van Lier (a Kiwi with a Scottish first name and a Dutch surname), Iuri Cozadaev (from Russia), Nawaz Ali (from Afghanistan) and Joel Oosthuizen and Markus Greyling (both ex-SA).

But Burger does not discriminate ethnically and his staff work together as a well oiled machine. He has brought his men into his business from the same background that he inherited from his time with BMW while working in South Africa.

He worked for a BMW network in Natal, South Africa for 21 years, gaining much technical and practical experience with BMW motor cars. Hamish has worked many years as a Mercedes Benz technician here in New Zealand. Iuri ran his own BMW/Audi workshop in Moldova, USSR before deciding to opt out of the Communist system of Eastern Europe and come to the relative peace and tranquility of New Zealand.

Nawaz is a refugee from the Taliban in Afghanistan and when he got here he worked arduously with Burger to obtain his apprenticeship. He is now a qualified mechanic and owes his NZ residency to Burger’s efforts to retain him as a political refugee.

Burger did not come to New Zealand without his own stars. He won the BMW top technician in South Africa award 5 times. He participated in international BMW technical competitions and was PERSONALLY placed 4th out of 28 countries. His career blossomed at Forsdicks in Pietermaritzburg where he worked for 19 long years, branching into technical auto diagnostics, an extremely difficult field. He subsequently moved down to the

“THE SECRET” is a fascinating book regarding the amazing

law of attraction between people, things & thoughts. It is a compilation of many people’s ideas on this topic from philosophers, metaphysicians, marketing specialists, entrepreneurs, healers, personal trainers, authors and motivational speakers; one of the most famous being Jack Canfield of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” fame.

The Great Secret of Life is the law of attraction. The law of attraction says: like attracts like, so when you think a thought, you are also attracting similar thoughts to you. Thoughts are magnetic, and thoughts have a frequency. As you think thoughts, they are sent out into the Universe, and they magnetically attract all like things that are on the same frequency. Everything sent out returns to the source - you. You are like a human transmission tower, transmitting a frequency with your thoughts. If you want to change anything in your life, change the frequency by changing your thoughts. Your current thoughts are creating your future life. What you think about the most or focus on the most will appear as your life. Your thoughts become things.

The law of attraction is a law of nature. It is as impartial as the law of gravity. Nothing can come into your experience unless you summon it through persistent thoughts. To know what you’re thinking, ask yourself how you are feeling. Emotions are valuable tools that instantly tell us what we are thinking. It is impossible to feel bad and at the same time have good thoughts.

Like Aladdin’s Genie, the law of attraction grants our every command. The Creative Process helps you create what you want in three simple steps, ask, believe, and receive. Asking the Universe for what you want is your opportunity to gain clarity about what you want. Believing involves acting, speaking, and thinking as though you have already received what you’ve asked for. When you emit the frequency of having received it, the law of attraction

moves people, events, and circumstances for you to receive.

To use the law of attraction to your advantage, make it a habitual way of existing, not just a one-time event. To attract money, focus on wealth. It is impossible to bring more money into your life when you focus on the lack of it. It is helpful to use your imagination and make-believe you already have money you want. Play games of having wealth and you will feel better about money; as you feel

better about it; more will flow into your life. When you want to attract a relationship, make sure your thoughts, words, actions, and surroundings don’t contradict your desires. Your job is you. Unless you fill yourself up first, you have nothing to give anybody. Treat yourself with love and respect, and you will attract people who show you love and respect. The placebo effect is an example of the law of attraction in action. When a patient truly believes the tablet is a cure, he receives what he believes and is cured. “Focusing on perfect health” is something we can all do within ourselves, despite what may be happening on the outside. Laughter attracts joy, releases negativity, and leads to miraculous cures. Disease is held in the body by thought, by observation of the illness, and by the attention given to the illness. If you are feeling a little unwell, don’t talk about it…unless you want more of it. If you listen to people talk about their illness, you add energy to their illness. Instead, change the conversation to good things, and give powerful thoughts to seeing those people in health. Beliefs about ageing are all in our minds, so release those thoughts from your consciousness. Focus on health and eternal youth. Now that you have learned the knowledge of The Secret, what you do with it is up to you. Whatever you choose is right. The power is all yours.

“The Secret” can be purchased in any good book store. The Author is Rhonda Byrne and the publishers are Atria Books / Beyond Words Publishing. There is also a great DVD that can be ordered if the book store does not have it or go to Amazon Books and order on line. The price for a new DVD is US$17.99.

I suggest you read the book first and then watch the DVD. Happy reading.

“Excuse me, honey, but can you pass me the CHUTNEy?”

SOUTH AFRICAN RECIPE REVUEour next article takes us into the wonderful world of condiments and how you can make them yourself at home using genuine SA source recipes.

When we, as ex-South Africans, go to the supermarkets looking for our favourite chutney we will look long

and hard for a “Mrs Balls” product because we are so used to buying it back home in SA.

Don’t worry. You will find it here in the major supermarkets. It is the best in the world and is imported here to NZ.

Chutney has an amazing history. It was invented by the Indians (Hindi: chatni) and was usually used as

a relish made from fresh fruits and spices in order to accompany a typical curry dish. During the colonial era the British discovered it in India and took it home to England, and thence to their other colonial possessions, including South Africa and the Caribbean Islands.

Major Grey, who loved curry, was a colonial British officer who made his own chutney to accompany the curry that he so enjoyed. If you look hard in England, you will still find his label in the supermarkets – “Major Grey’s Chutney” – but who knows if it is the same old recipe!

Here is a genuine recipe from a South African cook book that you may want to try:-

Tomato Chutney1 kg tomatoes250g brown sugar250 ml vinegar250g sultanas1 teaspoon mustard1 teaspoon ground ginger1 teaspoon salt2 onions finely dicedCayenne pepper to taste

Skin and slice the tomatoes, mix the ingredients and simmer for 30 minutes. Store the chutney in glass bottles while still hot, then seal with plastic lids.

CHUTNEY can be made from a variety of fruits including apricot, banana, quince, apple, mangos, pears, etc.
