You are leaving Cesar E. Chavez High School with a #1 ranking in both Kern and Tulare counties, a Silver Medal award recipient as one of America’s Best High Schools, and a Title I Achievement Award winner. You truly represent Titan standards of excellence and you make us proud. Many of you have been involved in various academically demanding programs (i.e. Advanced Placement curriculum, Academic Decathlon and Mock Trial), athletics and student government. Working with the senior class has been a pleasure and a rewarding experience. He passed away a long time ago, and I want to keep my word. I really want to help my cousins (Uncle’s children) in the Philippines. They are my only relatives who never had a chance to attend school and “life for them ain’t been no crystal stair.” In my sophomore year, my brother and also my mentor, Jesus Rojas, told me about the Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship. At that time, my family was undergoing adversities, and my brother, Jesus, motivated me to do well in school for my parents. I worked hard and planned diligently every step of the way. First time I heard the news: As my brother and I were heading home from a tennis match at around 8:30 pm, I had him check the mail. While he was carrying the stack of mail and getting ready to enter the car, I immediately noticed a big white envelope on top of the stack of mail. I immediately thought to myself, “You’ve got to be kidding me. That can’t be…” My brother told me it was a mail from the Gates Millennium. As we arrived home, I opened the mail in front of my dad, and I was overwhelmed, amazed, and in disbelief. I was lost for words. The first paper inside the folder stated “CONGRATULATIONS, Gates Millennium Scholars Program certifies Jockey Bautista Rojas as a Gates Millennium Scholar for the Class of 2012.” My dad was so happy for me. That was the first time, since years ago, I saw him that happy. My mom, who is currently in the Philippines, was crying over the phone; she, too, was in disbelief. My older siblings were ecstatic as well! As for my little brother, he asked me, “Why are you under-celebrating?” since I was just quiet the whole time. Long story short, my family’s overall message to me was that “great ambitions also come with great responsibilities”. They told me to stay hungry and to stay humble. I prayed and immediately thanked God for everything, for every blessing. I want to thank my mentors/teachers: Jesus Rojas, Mr. Brenna, Mr. Geno Garza, Mr. Yocum, Mr. Simental, Mrs. Briseno, Mrs. Salazar, and Mr. Rodarte. They kept me on guard, and I honestly could not have made it to where I am now without the guidance of these individuals. In the next few months, I will be majoring in Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley. After four years, I hope to get into medical school to pursue my long-term dream of becoming an anesthesiologist. To lower classmen: It is not a tragedy if you aim high and miss. However, it is a tragedy if you aim low and hit. Also, know and understand that the turning point in the process of growing up is when you discover the core of strength within you that survives all hurt. Don’t allow any personal problems to serve as excuses because each problem has a solution, and that solution lies within you. Choose to do what is necessary, not what is popular. Lastly, be passionate in everything you do. Overcoming Adversity Congratulations to the 2012 Prom King and Queen Brian Cauthron & Valerie Melgoza They took the dance floor for thei r customary king and queen dance. But afterwards the dance floor was overtaken by the students; it was so packed, that is was impossible to dance without having to bump into or step on someone else. That was all part of the prom experience.

As we approach your graduation ceremony, your teachers and the

When I was six years old, I promised my Uncle Edgar Bautista

that I will help him out through any means. He passed away a long

time ago, and I want to keep my word. I really want to help my

cousins (Uncle’s children) in the Philippines. They are my only

relatives who never had a chance to attend school and “life for them

ain’t been no crystal stair.”

College Experiences RevealedA group of my college friends and I broke into the biology building during themiddle of the night on Halloween. We snuck into the anatomy lab to do our owndissections on cadavers (humans)! --Mrs. Beecher

My junior year at CSUB, I played intramural basketball for “Cash 4 Dunkers.”I was playing against this young stud named Kobe “Bean” Bryant. I rememberthe moment like it was just yesterday.
