    SincethepublicationofEdwardFitzgerald'sclassictranslationoftheRubaiyatin1851-orrathersinceitsgeneralpopularityseveralyearslater-poetsminorandmajorhavebeenrenderingthesincerestformofflatterytothegeniusoftheIrishmanwhobroughtPersiaintothebestregulatedfamilies.UnfortunatelytherewasonlyoneOmarandtherewerescoresofimitatorswho,inordertomaketheAstronomergoround,wereobligedtodrawhimouttothethinnessofBalzac'sMagicSkin.Whileallthiswasgoingon,thepresentEditorwasforcedtoconcludethattheburningliteraryneedwasnotformoretranslators,butformoreOmarstotranslate;andwhatwashissurprisetonotethattheworkofalaterandsuperiorOmarKhayyamwaslyingundiscoveredinthewildsofBorneo!Here,indeed,wasasensationintheworldofletters-arevelationasthrillingasthedisintermentofOssian'sforgottensongs-thediscoveryofanunsubmergedAtlantis.WhilesomestoutCortezmoreworthythantheEditormighthavestoodonthisnewDarienandgazedoverthesleepingdemesneofOmarKhayyam,Jr.,hehad,sotospeak,the

    advantageofbeingfirstontheground,andtohimfelltheduty,nolensvolens,ofliftingtherarephilosophyoutoftheErebusthathadsolongcloakeditinobscurity.

    ItisstillamatterofsurprisetotheEditorthatthediscoveryoftheseRubaiyatshouldhavebeenlefttothislatedate,wheninsentimentandphilosophytheyhavepointsofsuperiorityoverthequatrainsofthefirstOmarofNaishapur.ThegeniusoftheEasthas,indeed,everbeenslowtorevealitselfintheWest.IttookaCrusadetobringtoourknowledgeanythingoftheschnerGeistoftheOrient;anditwasnotuntilthedayofMatthewArnoldthattheEpicofPersia[1]wasbroughtintotheproperrealmofEnglishpoesy.Whatwonder,then,thatnotuntilthefirstOmaricmadnesshadpassedaway

    weretheRubaiyatofOmarKhayyam,Jr.,liftedintothelightafteraninfinityofsudoretlaborspentinexcavatingunderthe9,000irregularverbs,80declensions,and41exceptionstoeveryrulewhichgotomaketheancientMango-Bornesedialectinwhichthepoemwasoriginallywritten,foremostamongthedeadlanguages!

    AlthoughlittleisknownofthelifeofOmarKhayyamtheelder,thedetailsofhisprivatecareerarefarmorecompletethanthoseofhisson,OmarKhayyam,Jr.Infact,manyhistorianshavebeensocarelessastohaveentirelyomittedmentionoftheexistenceofsuchapersonastheyoungerOmar.Comparativerecordsofthetwolanguages,however,showplainlyhowthemantlewashandedfromtheFathertotheSon,andhowitbecamethecommendabledutyofthesecondgenerationtocorrect

    andimproveuponthefirst.

    OmarKhayyamdiedintheearlypartoftheeleventhcentury,havingsoldhispoemsprofitably,withtheproceedsofwhichheestablishedtavernsthroughoutthelengthandbreadthofPersia.Omardiedintheheightofhispopularity,butshortlyafterhisdeaththecityofNaishapurbecameatemperancetown.EvenyettheyoungerOmarmighthavelivedandsungatNaishapurhadnotafanaticalsectofSufiwomen,takingadvantageoftheincreasingrespectabilityoftheoncejovialcity,riseninabodyagainstthehouseofOmarandliterallyrazedittothegroundwiththe

    aidofhatchets,whichwereatthattimethepeculiarweaponofthesexandsect.ItissaidthattheyoungerOmar,whowasthenayouth,wasobligedtofleefromthewrathoftheGoodGovernmentPropagandistsandtotakeabodeinadistantcity.ForsometimehewanderedaboutPersiainadestitutecondition,plyingthehereditarytradeoftent-maker,butatlengthpovertycompelledhimtoquithisnativecountryforgoodandtotryhisfortunesinalandsoremotethatthedissoluterecordofhisparentcouldnolongerhoundhim.Borneowastheislandtowhichthepoetfled,andherethehistorianfindshimsomeyearslaterprosperingintheworld'sgoodsandgreatlyreverencedbytheinhabitants.AlthoughOmar,Jr.,wasundoubtedlythegreatestmanthatBorneohasyetproduced,hemustnotbeconfusedinthemindofthereaderwiththeWildManofBorneo,who,althoughhimselfapoet,wasamanoffarlessculturethantheauthorofthepresentRubaiyat.

    WhilenotaGoodTemplar,theyoungerOmarshowedacommendabletendencytowardreform.ThesensitiveSoulofthepoetwasevercankeredwiththethoughtthathisfather'sjovialhabitshadputhiminafalseposition,andthatitwashisfilialdutytoretrievethefamilyreputation.Itwashislifeworktoinculcateintothesemi-barbaricmindsofthepeoplewithwhomhehadtakenabodethethoughtthatthealcoholicpleasuresofhisfatherwerefalsejoys,andthat(assunginnumberVI),-

    InTobaccothesonfoundalastingandcomparativelyharmlesssubstitutefortheWine,which,nonecandoubt,causedtheelderOmartocomplainsobitterly,-

    Quiteinaccordancewithhispolicyofimprovingonhisfather'srakishMusewasthefrequentendorsementofthebeautifulandharmlesspracticeofkissing.Thekissismentionedsomeforty-eighttimesinthepresentwork,andintheninehundreduntranslatedRubaiyat,twohundredandtenmorekissesoccur,makingagrandtotaloftwohundredandfifty-eightOmarickisses-

    "Enough!-ofKissescantherebeEnough?"

    ItmaybetrulysaidthattheFatherleftthediscoveryofWomantohisSon,fornowhereintheRubaiyatofNaishapur'spoetisfulljusticedonetothecharmsofthefair.EveninhismostardentpassagesoldOmarutterednomorethanaeulogytoFriendship.

    WherethephilosophyoftheelderOmarwasbacchanalianandepicurean,thatoftheSonwastobacchanalianandeclectic,allowingexcessonlyinmoderation,asitwere,andcountenancingnothingmoreviolentthanpoeticlicense.However,weareledtobelievethatthetastesofhistimecalledforacertainmildsensualityasthegustatiotoafeastof

    reason,andhadOmarKhayyamlivedinourowndayhewoulddoubtlesshaveagreedwithareverendErlingtonandBosworthProfessorintheUniversityofCambridgewhoboldlyassertsthattheliteratureredolentofnothingbutthegloriesofasceticism"deservesthecreditduetogoodnessofintention,andnothingelse."

    DuedoubtlesstothepreservativeinfluenceofsmokeOmarKhayyam,Jr.,wasenabledtolivetothehaleageofonehundredandseven,andtogotoanapotheosisfullyworthyhisgreatness.Amongthenativechroniclersthequatrain(numberXCVIII)-

    "ThenletthebalmedTobaccobemySheath,TheardentWeedabovemeandbeneath,AndletmelikealivingIncenserise,AFifty-CentCigarbetweenmyTeeth,"

    hasbeenthesourceofmuchrelentlessdebate.Bysomeitisheldthatthisstanzaispropheticinitsnature,foreseeingthetranscendentmiracleofthepoet'sdeath;byothersitisasstoutlymaintainedthatthepoetintheabovelinesdecreedthathisworkshouldbepreservedandhandeddowntoposterityinawrappingoftobacco.TheEditorisinclinedtothebeliefthatthereismuchtruthinbothopinions,fortheparchment,whenitcametohand,wasstainedandscentedfromitswrappingsofVirginiaandPerique;andthemannerofthepoet'sdeath

    marksNumberXCIasanotherremarkableinstanceoftheclairvoyanceoftheMuse.Toquotefromthequaintwordsofthenativechronicler:-
