THE ROYAL QUEENSLAND YACHT SQUADRON SAILING ACADEMY [email protected] | 07 3396 8666
ABOUT RQYS [email protected] | 07 3396 8666
One of Australia’s premier yacht clubs overlooking the Manly Boat Harbour, the Royal Queensland Yacht
Squadron is proud of its long history which stretches back over 130 years and still to this day is “the place”
for boaties to meet, compete and socialise.
The Squadron has evolved into a multi-faceted organisation and members, some third and fourth
generation families, enjoy a comprehensive range of facilities, both on and off the water.
Some of the best facilities in the world are on offer at the Squadron, in an ideal location, for boaties who
need a berth, want to sail competitively, or just need somewhere to store or launch their boat for cruising, a
fishing trip on the bay or further afield.
While you’re on shore there are wide open spaces, grassed areas and the Club House with the Squadron
Harbour View Restaurant, the Boardwalk Café, and our Coffee Shop.
The Squadron offers a comprehensive range of sailing related activities. Children and adults alike are
taught to sail in a fun, safe, supervised environment, and further development training for sailors who want
to race competitively is offered. The Sailing Academy offers a range of courses and programs throughout
the year to help develop and advance your skills and knowledge.
Visit the RQYS website for more information about the Squadron, or just ask one of our friendly staff
members.

you are sailing in the rain or in cold conditions, we recommend bringing a spray jacket/waterproof jacket.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE FIRST DAY
Kids Courses and Programs meet at the Sailing Academy which is located in the buildings on the very left of
the members’ carparks. RQYS Instructors give 10 – 15 minutes every morning for sun-screen application,
water bottle top-ups and a safety briefing, as well as at lunch time before recommencing. Children in kids’
courses and programs are also to be wearing a hat at all times whilst in the sun, a life jacket at all time when on
the water, and also wearing enclosed shoes.
People enrolled in Teenage/Adult Courses meet at Clubhouse Reception. This may vary, but will be clarified on
the second confirmation email you receive by email.
Remember to ensure you sign on when you arrive and sign off when you return off the water. This is a safety
precaution. Kids doing Tackers, Sail and Play or Green Fleet/Intermediate, sign on and off at the Sailing
Academy entrance. Everyone else signs on at Reception.
For enquiries about the club and to make payment for courses/programs, please see the Clubhouse Reception
which is located up the stairs behind the red & white cannon ornament in the carpark. Reception does not take
instant payments – they will take your credit card details and pass this onto Sailing Administration to process.

NEW ATTRACTIVE MEMBERSHIP/SAILING PACKAGE
RQYS now offers the option to pay $350.00/$615.00 on top of a Crew or Full Membership, to receive 10
($350.00, lasts 6 months) or 20 ($615.00, lasts 12 months) x 3 hour sails on our boats (Elliott 6s or Pulse
600s). In these 10 or 20 sails, you will be taught to sail by very experienced and qualified instructors, become a
graduate of the Start Skippering Course, and then you will be able to use the remaining of your 10 or 20 sails,
to hire the boats without an instructor. You may only take 5 sails to be deemed competent to Skipper the
Elliotts, meaning you are left with quite a few 3-hour-sails to take the boat. We will email you and advise what
lessons are available to book into when you are
learning. When you graduate the course, you
can begin sailing on your own! Please arrange a
booking with the Sailing Office with at least 48
hours’ notice.
In the beginning of our Membership year (May –
April), if you take out a $615.00 Sailing Package,
in addition to your Crew Membership, it will total
to $995.00 for a year’s membership (Australian
Sailing Silver Card coverage, club entrance and
ability to sign in guests) and for 20 x 3 hour sails
– which is 60 hours – on the water in our boats.
This is the perfect option for people who want to
learn to sail and then hire boats without the
supervision of Instructors, or competent sailors
who do not own a boat.
LIQUOR LICENSING
RQYS is governed by the Liquor Licensing Laws, meaning that only RQYS Members, guests of RQYS
Members, and Visitors who reside outside 15 km driving distance of the Club, can use the Boardwalk Café,
Squadron Harbour View Restaurant and the RQ Bar.
Those participating in RQYS Sailing Academy courses or programs, as well as parents of children participating
in Tackers, Sail & Play and Junior Squads, are welcome to use these dining facilities whilst the program is
running, as well as directly before and after. Tackers parents are offered a Free Social Membership (1 per
family), valid until the 30 April.
MEMBERSHIP
After completing courses with the RQYS Sailing Academy, the next step for under 25’s is becoming a member
and joining our exclusive Junior Training Squads. The Optimist and Sabot squads are where most start, but if
you already sail a Laser or another dinghy class, contact Brady Lowe, our Head Coach and Sailing Manager,
and see when you can start your coaching. To be able to get coaching in Green Fleet, Intermediate Squad,
Youth Squad (Lasers, Flying 11s, Optis, Bic Techno, etc.), you need to be a Junior or Young Adult member of
RQYS. Both memberships give you free boat storage here at the Squadron.
The next step over 20s is to become a Crew or Full member, and join/start a RQ Crew to compete in races, or
to just go cruising. It depends whether you’d like to get into competitive sailing, or just to participate in the sport
casually. A great gateway for meeting people in the squadron that you could sail with, is participating in WAGS
on Wednesdays, which is free and can be attended for free by non-members 3 times. After 3 times of
attendance, non-members can pay for 3 day memberships ($15 per day) and then another 6 day memberships
($35 per day). Bec in the Sailing Office can assist with getting you involved in Saturday Division Yacht Racing
during our Sailing Season. Please contact her for assistance with getting involved with Keelboats after
graduating Sailing Academy courses.

TACKERS 1 - Having Fun is a safe & enjoyable introductory course to dinghy sailing which prepares
students for Tackers 2. The course provides students with essential knowledge and gives the students an
introduction to sailing small boats (Optimists) with the guidance from the RQYS instructors. The children
sail with a partner (two to a boat) under instructor supervision. At the completion of this level the students
will be issued with the Yachting Australia Tackers 1 Qualification.
TACKERS 2 - Tricks and Techniques prepares students for the next level up – Tackers 3. Tackers 2
furthers the students’ sailing skills with the aim of eventually sailing on their own (one to a boat). The aim
of the course is to build on the students’ skills and knowledge that was assembled in Tackers 1, enabling
the participant to safely sail a small boat (Optimists) in controlled conditions (light winds, calm waters)
with guidance from the instructors. At the completion of this course students will be issued with the
Yachting Australia Tackers 2 Qualification.
TACKERS 3 - Sailing Fast prepares students to join the RQYS Green Fleet as the aim of this course is
to introduce sailors to competitive sailing. It builds on the skills and knowledge gained in Tackers 1 and 2,
and will enable the child to manoeuvre the boat efficiently in light to moderate conditions on all points of
sail. This course is designed to equip the sailor with enhanced skills and awareness of the surrounding
environment and focuses on refining enhanced boat handling skills including speed control and
manoeuvres and introducing participants to basic racing tactics and strategies. Upon the completion of
Tackers 3, after demonstrating the required knowledge and skills, students will be awarded with the
Yachting Australia Tackers 3 Qualification and have the opportunity to join the RQYS Green Fleet if they
wish.

PRIVATE LESSONS [email protected] | 07 3396 8666
Interested in having one-on-one tuition with a Qualified & highly experienced Instructor? Private
Lessons cater to all ages and experience levels, and are perfect for those wanting to learn, re-learn,
further-develop your sailing skills, or even do a sailing course at a time that suits you. Private lessons
can also just be a one-off, laid-back experience on a sailing boat for you or as a gift to others.
PRICING:
$150.00 per Instructor per 3 hours or $60 per Instructor per 1 hour
OPTIMIST (KIDS 6 – 12)
Optimists are the first boat that most dinghy sailors learned to sail in. Our Tackers courses are all run in
Optimists and teach students the fundamentals of dinghy sailing and everything kids need to know
about safety, environmental factors, and more. Depending on age/size of the kids, there will be either 1
or 2 kids per boat when they are starting out. For 11 – 13 year olds, usually we would have them start
as 1 kids per boat (1-up), and anyone younger is usually 2 kids per boat (2-up). When the Tackers 3
standard is reached, all kids will be 1-up. There will be 1 instructor per 2 kids in Private Lessons,
meaning it would cost $150.00 for 1-2 kids per 3 hours.
PACER (TEENAGERS/ADULTS)
Pacers are the perfect boat for teenagers and adults to learn to sail in. These 2-up boats are the perfect
gateway for teens and adults to get more involved in Club Racing, training with the club, and more.
These dinghies are recommended for all ages 11 and up. Similarly to Optimists, the Pacers allow you to
have another person on the boat with you for the same price. There will be 1 instructor per 2 people (1
boat) in Private Lessons, meaning it would cost $150.00 for 1-2 people per 3 hours.
ELLIOTT 6 (ADULTS)
Elliott 6s are a great boat for adults to get into Keelboat and large yacht sailing. These 6-meter boats fit
up to 5 people on them – but preferably only 3 or 4 people – and only requires 1 Instructor per boat,
meaning the cost for Elliott private lessons can be split between all the participants on the 1 boat.
WINDSURFER (ALL AGES)
Windsurfing is an awesome sport that is considered sailing but is on a board where you are standing
up-right. Windsurfing is also a lot of fun, and is recommended for all ages. Generally, you need to be
big/strong enough to control the sail, so usually we limit serious-learning to just ages 9 and over.
Windsurfing at the Squadron is conducted off the Eastern Beach, rather than launching off a ramp into
the Marina like the dinghies. Windsurfing is a 1-up sport, and we can teach 2 people per Instructor.
ABOUT OUR BOATS & BOARDS [email protected] | 07 3396 8666
OPTIMIST – FOR KIDS
Learn to sail in Tackers Courses or through Private
Lessons. Optimists are small single-handed dinghies. The
boat pictured is a Tackers Poly boat, which is what the
kids start their Optimist learn-to-sail journey in. Optimists
are about 2.4 meters in length.
PACER - TEENAGERS/ADULTS
Learn to sail in a dinghy for Teenagers and Adults. Pacers
have 2 sails and are usually 2-up. RQYS Sailing Academy
can teach you to sail in Pacers through private lessons,
and certify you with an Australian Sailing Course if you do
enough hours. The Pacer is the first step of getting into
dinghy sailing for people who aren’t ready to buy their own
boat yet. Pacers ware 3.8 meters in length.
ELLIOTT 6 – ADULTS
The Elliotts are the perfect way to get into large yacht
sailing at the Squadron. The boats can be sailed with 2 to
5 people on them, and unlike Optimists and Pacers, are a
Keelboat. The Elliotts we own are 6 meters in length, and
are used for the majority of sailing courses we host.
WINDSURFER - ALL AGES
Windsurfing is an awesome form of sailing the whole
family can participate in. Depending on the size and
experience level of the sailor, you will most likely start out
on a Bic Techno, then eventually move to a larger sail and
board. RQYS has hire boards and sails available for hire
when training with the Saturday Teams Windsurfers. When
participating in a course, boards and sails are provided.
