NATIONAL PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEDear Daughters:

I sincerely hope that each of youhas had a blessed Christmas seasonand now, at the beginning of anothernew year, is a good time to make plansfor your chapter to begin a new studyprogram for spiritual enrichment.

There are many wonderful programs available and I would like tomention two. They are: 1) Go on Singing with a study guide, or How to FindJoyful Living from the Psalms byRichard Champion, published byGospel Publishing House, Springfield,Missouri. This is an interesting, yetfun, study of the Psalms.

2) Also, The Study of St. Luke fromthe Bible Reading Fellowship, P. O.Box M, Winter Park, Florida 32789. Itincludes a guide and introduction tothe Bible by William Barclay whoalso wrote a study program on TheActs of the Apostles.

In 1984,1 hope that you will becomemore familiar with your Handbooks. As we use our Handbooks, let us remember that the MOTTO of the Orderis "FOR HIS SAKE" (see page 3 ofHandbook). The part "I am but one,but I am one" was added later. Recently, someone sent me a lovely pieceof music called "The Motto of theDaughters of the King," but nowheredid it mention the true motto "FORHIS SAKE." Much as we appreciatethe effort, we have had to regretfully

return it for possible revision.

A reminder: February 2, the Feast ofthe Presentation of Christ in theTemple, is the date of our annualingathering of the Self-Denial Fund. Ifind that many of our members just donot understand the meaning of thisvoluntary offering. We are asked toforego immediate pleasures so thatthe mission of the Church may beserved. The larger purpose is the support of our two missionaries, Elizabeth and Pat in Brazil who, by theirfives and work extend our Prayer andService into an area we cannot individually reach. If each of us makeshonest self-sacrifices and accumulates our coins to be gathered togetherwith those of others, we could have anoffering to meet the needs of our missionaries.

Our hearts go out to BarbaraMerrick, one of our beloved formerNational Presidents, whose husband,Ivan E. Merrick, died September 27.1feel sure that many of you will wish tomake a tangible expression of yoursympathy. The Endowment Fund(see page 11 of your Handbook, Section I, Memorials d) 2), will welcomecontributions in memory of Fr.Merrick or any other loved one.

Faithfully, For His Sake,Geraldine E. Herren

NATIONAL CHAPLAIN'S MESSAGE

Grace to you and peace from God,our Father, in the Lord Jesus Christ.

As I prepare for Christmas, thisyear I have been particularly movedby the utter humility of our God, tocome into the world quite as He did inaccepting a lowly birth in an obscurestable. Most stables, and especiallythose in the Middle East, are dirty, dingy, unkempt affairs, appropriatelyout of sight, and kept at a safe distance from the center of life, like someparts of our lives. Yet the incredibleGood News is that He still comes! Hecomes right into the messy stable Imay still have in my life, there to beborn, and then to possess, transform, and redeem those unwelcoming stablebastions.

Thinking back over the year, I hopeeach of us can with thanksgiving, identify some of His coming when, painful as birth always is. He hasbeen reborn in our lives. Similarly, inour common life together, we need tobe able to discover new dimensions ofHis coming, and thus to find a deeperunderstanding and appreciation ofHis presence within each other. WhenI am able to recognize this happeningwithin my own life and relationships, then it is that Advent and Christmas, the coming of the birth, met mostwondrously within my own faith andexperience.

And speaking of the overwhelminghumility of God in His coming, isthere not another dimension of theDivine Humility in His waiting? "Inthe fullness of time," St. Paul speaksof His birth — not before. Howpatiently He waits for each of us andwith what infinite long-suffering Heworks His purpose out in our lives. Inthe words of that great prayer for theChurch, "All things are being broughtto perfection through Him from whomthey took their origin," but neitherthey nor we are there yet — and howgood of our God to wait for us!

As we celebrated the Nativity lastmonth, my prayer for each of us wasthat we did open up a stable or two in

our lives, messy as they may be, to letJesus be born into those parts not yetgiven to Him. But I also pray that wemay more readily move as and whereHe wants to move with us in bringingus into His Epiphany glory.

May you all have a joyful andblessed Christmastide and Epiphany.

Yours through His birth,^ Shannon

INTERCESSION AND PETITION

Intercession is praying for others.Petition is praying for our own needs.St. Paul said, "Brethren, pray for us"(I Thessalonians 5:25) and "... we donot cease to pray for you" (Colossians1:9). We have an obligation to pray forone another. It is not only our duty, but our privilege.

"Praying for others means that weidentify ourselves with their needs, making their cause one with ours. Weshare their sense of sin, bear theirpain and regard their lives as weregard our own. This is not easy to do.We need to place ourselves in theirsituation 'through our Christ-filled imagination,' feel as they feel, and experience a soul-oneness with them ifwe are to pray for them with power,"says Charles M. Laymon.

We need that consecrated imagination which enables us to picture ourselves in another's situation and, more than this, we will live for them ifwe are to pray well for them. Paullikened his own life with its sufferinglove for others as a kind of extensionof Christ's death on the cross. If ourprayers are Christ-centered, we toocan be an extension of the cross. In"What Happens When Women Pray,"Evelyn Christenson says (referring toprayer chains), "Make requests —don't dictate answers... when we prayanswers, we're demanding that Goddo something and telling Him wewant it done now — 'just the way wewant it. Lord.'" What we should do isbring our requests to Him, tell Himour need and ask Him to answer inaccord with His omniscient will; thatis. His will — and only things that weknow are right in His sight.

Petitionary prayer is not only allowed, it is commanded: "Give us thisday our daily bread" (Lord's Prayer).

A person must not offer prayers foranother unless she is willing to beused to answer her own prayer. Frequently, God places the prayer in ourhands again so that we may rise fromour knees with a job to do, or He maygive us new insight into a situation, new understanding.

Why should an all-powerful Fatherwant His daughters to ask Him forthings? If God is perfect. He is neverwrong. If He is never wrong. He willnot need to be told how to act. If He isall-knowing, why should we need totell Him our wants and needs? Whyshould He choose us "to do slowly andblunderingly what He could do miraculously in the twinkling of aneye?" Prayer must not be thought ofas asking and getting. It is, first of all,a fellowship with our creator. It is analignment of our will with His. Out ofour communion with Him, we emergeas changed persons!

Is prayer always answered? SinceGod is our heavenly Father, we couldcompare how human parents answerrequests of their children. Children, intheir limited knowledge, ask forthings which their parents, in theirgreater wisdom, sometimes mustdeny. A wise, loving parent must oftensay "no" even though the children donot understand. Sometimes theanswer is "yes" and sometimes theanswer is "later."

Why has God told us to pray? Firstof all, it is the way for us to enjoyfellowship with Him. We sense Hispresence and rejoice in His nearness.

"Prayer is exhaling the spirit ofman and inhaling the Spirit of God,"Through prayer, our weakness is exchanged for God's power.

A MEDITATION FOR

EPIPHANY

Epiphany: the season of light. Sunday after Sunday we will hear thereferences: "Arise, shine, for yourlight has come," "a light to the nations," "a light to lighten the Gentiles," "thepeople who sat in darknesshave seen a great light."

"Lighten our darkness," we pray, hedging against the darkness of ourminds, our dark natures, our humanity, our lack of comprehension."In Him there is no darkness at all,"we sing; "the day and the night areboth alike. The Lamb is the light ofthe city of God — shine in our hearts.Lord Jesus."

Everywhere the Christian story isalive with images of light over darkness, expressing again and again thechild in us who does not want the lightturned out. "Children of light," wehave called ourselves from earliest

times.

But today's psychology recognizesthat we have within us both sun andmoon, light and dark, masculine andfeminine, and we are beginning tounderstand that the ebb and flow oflife make life possible, as well as rich.At a retreat recently, Robert Johnsonreminded us that we begin every journey inward with the Creed:

"I believe in one God, theFather, the Almighty, maker ofheaven and earth, of all that is,seen and unseen." God, whocreates all, loves all that Hecreates, and there is no darkcorner in us that exists outside

His love, "and without him wasnot anything made that wasmade."

How shall we love the darkness inourselves, in our world, when we seethe misery that it inflicts? Can welearn somehow to comfort and nur

ture the world, our lost humanity, those who refuse to share their food, those who bully the small and theweak, and make them children of thelight?

We women do have that gift, because of Christ who lives in us, tocomfort the lost child assuring himthat he is an inheritor of the kingdom.Only when we forget that, or forget toshare that knowledge, do we wanderin darkness.

WHO HAS THE RECORD?

We're still receiving replies to thisquestion! That's wonderful. A letterfrom Linda M. Summer, age 90years, tells us that she was admittedto the Order at All Saints' in Atlanta,Georgia, in the early 1940s. She laterserved as president. She now lives inFlorence, South Carolina. Linds sentus a prayer that appeared in TheRoyal Cross 40 years ago on the page"Begin Each Day with Prayer." Weare so happy to publish the prayeragain; it appears with no title orauthor:

We talk about "having faith"and/or taking a step in faith. Isthere a difference?I have faith that God is in charge

and things will work out eventually. That kind of faith takes us throughmany everyday events and sometimes, crises. But a step in faith is entirely dif

ferent. A step in faith is when wecan't see the end result, but simplyfollow the teachings and promises ofGod. He promises us that if we askanything in His name, that willglorify Him, He will grant it.For example, 18 years ago our

parish, St. Luke's in Merced, talkedabout buying property in the growingpart of our city which was then pasture! Many did not have the vision orinsight that the Rector and Vestrydid. But, as our leaders, they took astep in faith and for $1 down, boughtover five acres of valuable propertyacross from Merced College. We were"put to the test" when the estimatedconstruction cost almost doubled. Wepersevered and in June of 1975 movedinto the new facility, along with ouroutreach project, St. Luke's School, which has grown from 65 children in1980, to near capacity of 192 — all as aresult of our step in faith. In the summer of 1982, a young

priest from Trinity Episcopal Seminary in Ambridge, PA, called to saythe Lord was leading him to St.Luke's. At dinner that evening heasked to share his "call" with ourVestry which was meeting that night(God's holy "coincidence"), and theyunanimously agreed to call him as aCurate even though this was NOT inthe budget! The Vestry and parishtook a step in faith and the Lord hashonored those steps. The Curate washere about six months when theRector had a serious affliction whichincapacitated him for a few months, but the Curate was there to step in.Prevenient grace? A step in faith? Ora combination of both?

Daughters, what is our next step infaith? Is it something in the parish, oron a national level?Lord, what will You have us do?

NEW CHAPTER IN TULSA

St. Monnica's Chapter was installed on Sunday, September 18,1983, at Church of the Holy Spiritduring the morning worship service. The Rev. Beverly L. Barge, Vicar ofthis three and one-half year old mission, officiated at the service. Alsopresent were Mary Anne Price, diocesan president of the Daughters ofthe King, and Mary Montgomery, diocesan treasurer. Twenty-one womenare charter members and will meet at

two different times once a month. There is an evening and a morningmeeting to accommodate women whowork outside the home and those who

prefer to meet in the daytime.

Because Monnica, mother of St.Augustine of Hippo, persevered in herlove, prayers and tears for the conversion of her husband, and son,Augustine, it was decided at our first

meeting, unanimously, to have ourchapter named after her. The deciding factor was the Prayer of Monnica,a Collect we also chose as our own

Collect:

"0 Lord, through spiritual discipline You strengthened yourservant, Monnica, to perseverein offering her love and prayersand tears for the conversion ofher husband and of Augustine, their son: Deepen our devotion,we pray, and use us in accordance with Your will to bringothers, even our own kindred, toacknowledge Jesus Christ asSavior and Lord; Who with Youand the Holy Spirit lives andreigns, one God, forever and ever.Amen."

At the suggestion of my rector, Fr.Robert Gibson, I attended the Diocesan Daughters of the King's firstannual retreat in September of 1982and began the process of forming achapter. A regular series of educational meetings was established forstudy and prayer which led the ninecandidates, plus one transfer, intomembership of the diocesan and national Order.

Fulfilling a lifelong dream, DanielleDear was admitted into membership.Although homebound with multiplesclerosis, "Danny" is the chapter'sofficial intercessor and helps withphone contacts when she is able. Hersis a powerful witness to the Motto ofthe Daughters as she does what shecan do and is given God's grace to beable to do it. Danny's mother,Dorothea, was pleased to reactivate

her membership and especially toshare in the membership and Rules ofLife with her daughter.

LETS EVANGELIZE!

We are not evangelizing enough.Evangelism seems to have a bad connotation. To change to Public Relations isn't much better; to say "Publicity" is poison to ladies who havebeen brought up on "name in thepaper three times in a life is enough"(birth, wedding, death). But thespread of Christ's Kingdom would nothave occurred if the Apostles hadbeen mute!

Daughters need to "Go tell it on themountain, over the hills and everywhere."

We must pray that the "criticalspirit" leave the Order, and that wepractice the Second Commandment- "LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THYSELF," so that it permeates our Orderand our lives.

In Humility, FOR HIS SAKESusan C. IGrkpatrickPublicity & Promotion Chairman

ARE WE INVOLVED?

As part of our commitment toService in the Church, how many areinvolved in the serious matter ofchemical dependency that is rampantin society today?

The Episcopal Church is way out infront in learning more about thedisease of alcoholism and promoting educational programs. The Rev. VemonJohnson, D.D., is Founder and President Emeritus of the Johnson Foundation, and is an Episcopal priest.

The Rev. William McLean III isPresident and Director of R.A.C.A.(Recovered Alcoholic Clergy Assn.) inthe Episcopal Church.

There are many forms of chemicaladdiction (tranquilizers, "uppers,"etc.), but to start, let's focus on alcohol,an easily available, socially acceptable, legal and economical drug. Thisis not to be prohibitionist, God forbid, for many people drink "in moderation," as St. Paul exhorted us in allthings. But by recognizing the dangersignals and being well-informed, we

are better able to love our brothersand sisters in Christ.

"Even where alcoholism has beenidentified, clergy and laity alike haveremained immobilized by the mistaken notion that nothing can be doneuntil the alcoholic seeks help.

"In point of fact, the condition isrecognizable by adequately informedpeople ... all other helping professions operate under the ethic, the sickmust come to them, and ask for aid. Inalcoholism, the victims are incapableof recognizing the severity of theirsymptoms spontaneously; to waituntil they 'hit bottom' is unconscionable.

"Intervention is the norm rather

than the exception."(Excerpt from Father Johnson)

Is part of our Service as a Daughterto love our clergy and laity by helpingthem to recover?
