3RD MILITARY POLICE COMPANY

MOTORCYCLE DISPLAY TEAM

Making their Royal Show debut this year is the crack 13-member motorcycle display team from the Army's 3rd Military Police Company.

All team members are qualified Military Police Motor-cyclists and ride powerful Suzuki GS 400 MP Specials which are used on routine police patrols.

The precision and concentration required by the team will be evident as they reach speeds of 70 kmph during crossover manoeuvres where four and six members ride towards each other, crossing within centimetres at closing speeds of 140 kmph — there's no room for error. Other manoeuvers consist of close quarter riding, straight line and circular formation riding.

Team coach is Captain Murray Jonas and Sergeant Nev Clow is "Suicide Rider" — an apt name when you see what his "duties" entail.

Friday, 18 September, 7.30 p.m. Saturday, 19 September, 6.15 p.m. Sunday, 20 September, 3.00 p.m. (Combined Army Display Military Police Motorcycles and Army Band)

A REAL HIGH FLIER The Manchester Unity Belt Rocket Man

From the United States of America flies in one of the most exciting and sensational main arena attractions ever to be seen at an Australian Royal Show — the Belt Rocket Man.

The Manchester Unity Belt Rocket Man represents a real life introduction to the Space Age as he blasts off from the centre arena platform. powered by his rocket back pack.

The special Rocket Belt was designed by Textrons Bell Aerosystems Company engineers who were awarded the contract to develop the system by the United States Army Transportation Research and Engineering Command.

This Rocket Belt consists of a twin nozzle propulsion system mounted on a fibre glass corset and to operate the unit the pilot gives a twist of a throttle, a turn of a lever then rockets to a height of about 20 metres, or up to 100 kph in directional flight for about 25 seconds —his only support being a twin nozzle thrust of hydrogen peroxide steam

The current rocket unit has only just been removed from the U.S.Army's "Secret' List and is used in perfor-mances at Disneyland and fairs throughout America.

The Manchester Unity Rocket Man will appear twice daily in the Main Arena with the exception of Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17.

See this incredible high wire act on: Saturday, 19 September, 8.15 p.m. Thursday, 24 September, 8.15 p.m. Friday, 25 September, 8.15 p.m. Saturday, 26 September, 8.30 p.m. Dale's fantastic "ground" performances can be seen

ACTIONPROGRAM I

THE 1981 HORSES IN FEATURING ...

The ARC Australian Gold Cup Tentpegging Champion-ship.

The Main Arena is the venue for another hard fought round of Royal Show Tentpegging, sponsored again this year by ARC Industries Limited.

Hear the thunder of hooves as the horses streak down the length of the arena, see the flashing reflection of arena lighting on the cold metal lance tips as each rider takes calculated aim at his target, and hear the roar of the crowd as the judge flags a "carry".

The Gold Cup Competition has this year been conducted under new regulations requiring elimination heats to have been run before the finals at the Royal Melburne Show.

Only the very best make it to the "Royal", and only the very best will take off the Gold Cup at the end of the Show.

CRA Campdrafting The stakes are high and the going is tough in the 1981

CRA Campdrafting Championship. Conducted in heats over the period of the Show, you'll

see Australia's best stock riders pitting their wits against steer and clock in one of the most exciting events of Australian Rodeo.

The aim of the competition is to cut a steer from a yarded mob, drive it around a pegged obstacle course and back to the yard in the quickest possible time. It also calls for optimum understanding between horse and rider because they must move as one to have any hope of achieving their goal.

It's rugged and it's top Royal Show Action.

The ARC Australian Gold Cup Tentpegging Championship . a highlight of the horses in action program.

P.B. Ronald Pavilion, Plummer Avenue, and the Horticulture Pavilion, Lennon Avenue

Literally one of the most beautiful highlights of thisyear's Royal Melbourne Show is the Thiess Toyota Horticulture Display.

Amidst the thousands of magnificent blooms you will see a huge array of pot plants, camelias, daffodils, cut flowers, floral art and special childrens presentations, many of which are exhibited in competitive sections.

The Horticultural Display is conducted in conjunction with the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria.

A new innovation this year is a Contest for Commercial Nurserymen. This too is sponsored by Thiess Toyota and carries prize money of $250.

SHOW JUMPING AT ITS BEST

You'll see Australia's top show jumping horses and riders compete for the top money in what promises to be a thrilling program of Royal Show show jumping. Included in the big jumps program are the ANZ Bank Grand Prix for jumping, Division 1 and the National Bank

International and Interstate Teams' Jumping Contest, both worth $1,000 each. "The Age" Puissance Championship, Group B; the Carlton and United Breweries Stakes; the Prince of Wales Cup

(sponsored by Buckley & Nunn); the Myer Emporium One Round Stakes and the Olympic Tyre Stakes are each worth $750.

And how good have the horses got to be? To even get a look in, they must be up around the 350-400 metres in a minute mark — that's action.

Supporting the top events is an exciting program of teams events, Junior Jumps and Section Fours.

The "Garryowen" Of all saddle and riding events conducted during the Royal Melbourne Show, there is only one "Garryowen". Introduced in 1934 to commemorate the bravery of Mrs. Violet Murrell, who perished in a stable fire trying to

save her favourite mount "Garryowen", this event today attracts the best performed hacks and the elite among women riders from all over Victoria and interstate.

Competitors are awarded points for HORSE (confor-mation and soundness, manners and paces), EQUIPMENT (saddlery and costume)• and RIDING ABILITY.

EXOTIC WOOL FASHIONS

FROM INDIA CENTRE POINT, Degraves Street

There is a subtle and formidable influence sweeping the world of fashion which has the leading Western designers turning back to that original source of beautiful and almost spiritual inspiration — India.

So for 1981, the Australian Wool Corporation has chosen India for the first time as its guest nation for the wool fashion parades at the Royal Melbourne Show.

India's fine fabrics together with the weaving, printing and dyeing skills of her craftsmen were sought after for centuries before control by the British placed restrictive trade bans on Indian textiles in an effort to protect Britain's own developing textile industry.

Today, an independent India is re-emerging as a force in world fashion design. European designers, in the wake of the bold colours of the sixties and subsequent softening tones of the seventies, have re-discovered India's genius in their search for fresh inspiration.

Behind India's resurgence as an influential force in the design-consciousness of the modern Western world lies an age-old tradition of fine craftsmanship.

India's Ambassadress for Wool is the celebrated and very beautiful model, Nandini Sen.

She is recognised as India's leading photographic model and catwalk mannequin. Her work has taken her all over the world, to Yugoslavia in 1975 and 1977, Australia and Mauritius in 1976, Singapore and Germany in 1978. PARADE TIMES:

R.A.S.V. EDUCATIONAL DISPLAYS THE STORY OF HAYMAKING

Corner of Degraves Street and McCracken Avenue

Probably one of the most basic processes undertaken by farmers is haymaking yet few suburban families can say how grass is made into a tightly packed bale of conserved fodder or hay.

Haymaking has been chosen by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria as the theme for what will become an annual educational display, to help explain various farming methods, processes and equipment to Show visitors who are resident in and around Melbourne.

This year's display features the implements used by today's farmer to cultivate his ground, sow pasture, mow, rake and bale his hay. And as a contrast to modern methods, photographs showing the use of horse drawn machinery, hay stooking and stacking complements this special display. We all know about hay, but how is it made and what is it

If you have any questions about haymaking or the really used for? equipment used, there is a representative from the R.A.S.V. and from machinery manufacturers to answer them foripwaximfMilManilMiMMAMOSSI.laaliMMgiiiiil you. PRIMARY INDUSTRIES DISPLAYS

AUSTRALIAN DAIRY FOODS PAVILION Lennon Avenue

LOOK, TASTE AND BUY IN GIANT DAIRY FOODS "SUPERMARKET"

The Australian Dairy Foods Pavilion next to the Big M Carton in Lennon Avenue, is more than just an exhibition — its one giant supermarket of Australian dairy products where you'll be able to look and taste the products, and buy them if you want. It is the largest display of Australian dairy foods — even bigger than a shopper can find in any supermarket.

Over 1600 square metres of space will be packed with Australian dairy products and the 20 exhibitors in the pavilion expect to hand out 140 tonnes of these products during the Show. That's the equivalent of about two months stock of dairy food products passing through any major supermarket in Australia.

"...I wouldn't kid you Mrs. C., it's a great display at the Meat Hall..."

FEED THE MAN MEAT At the MEAT HALL, Lennon Avenue

The Australian Meat and Livestock Corporation, Meat and Allied Trades' Federation and the Gas and Fuel Corporation, join forces to present the 1981 "Feed the Man Meat" program in the new look Meat Hall.

This year, the most expert butchers in Melbourne aim to take all the mystery out of the selection, carving and handling of meat, while Gas and Fuel Corporation demon-strators will transform the timid cook into the adventurous; the wasteful into the thrifty; through top class cooking demonstrations.

A SHOW OF STARS See your favourite stars from Channel 10's PRISONER

Degraves Street, and at the Channel 10 Bus which will be parked near by.

Animal Salt Blocks Have Many Uses When one thinks of animal salt blocks, it is a fairly safe bet they will also think of Olsson's. Olsson Industries are manufacturers of industrial and stock salts and have been producing a specialist range of animal salt blocks for over 30 years. Amongst the better known of this wide range are Minarea and Minamag. Minarea was first available in 1949 and in 1980 is as popular and efficient as ever. Minarea with its content of 3% urea stimulates the appetite of cattle and sheep and encourages them to eat dry feed. The block actually agitates bacteria in the rumen of livestock told enables them to digest dry, hard and unattractive feed. Equally well known in the Olsson range is Minamag which assists in the prevention of grass tetany in cattle. Grass tetany is caused by a lack of magnesium in the system and occurs when cattle are grazed on winter grown grasses as these do not Contain magnesium. " Minamag blocks contain 15% magnesium sulphate and 15% magnesium oxide, and should be left in paddocks coming into early winter so that stock feeding on them can build up the magnesium content in their bodies and assist them to avoid the disease. The blocks are weatherproof and can be left out in the paddocks without fear of loss through rainy weather. Olssons produce many other salt blocks which cater for most requirements of cattle and sheep plus mineral blocks for goats and for horses. Most trace element deficiencies can be catered for with an Olsson salt block. With a range like that it's easy to see why people think salt and think Olssons.

BE SEEN IN A CESSNA

SAFETY FIRST AT VICTORIA POLICE

EXHIBITION 1981 Smith Street

One of the main concerns of our police is the safety of road users and boating enthusiasts. And this concern is reflected in aspects of the 1981 Victoria Police Exhibition in Smith Street.

With holidays only a few months away, we begin to think of packing up, hitching the caravan or boat to the car and making for our favourite holiday spot. The task of towing a caravan, boat or trailer should not be undertaken lightly and consideration must be given to the correct towing equipment, the weight distribution of luggage and many other factors.

The Traffic Operations Group this year present a segment on towing safety and have information on hand to assist motorists. The group will also have video displays, pamphlets and advisers on hand to talk to children and parents about bicycle safety.

The Search and Rescue Squad are to emphasise the dangers of underwater diving while the Motor Boating Squad will be there to give advice on correct navigational lighting. They are also keen to make people aware of the safety aspects relating to the towing of boats.

Demonstrations by the Dog Squad of dog obedience will be a part of the program and the Victoria Dock and Customs are to display illegal imports like drugs and prohibited weapons which have been seized by that section's operations. Kanga Cop and Happy Honda (the talking motorcycle) will be there and free Show bags will be given to children passing through the exhibition.

CENTRE POINT, Degraves Street

The Martial Arts style of self defence may be very old in origin but refreshingly new and very necessary today for those lacking in ways to ensure their personal safety in these uncertain times.

You can judge for yourself the value of these skills when you see the ease with which expert exponents deal with attackers. This year in Centre Point, through the courtesy of the Martial Arts Council of Australia, demonstrations of seven Martial Art disciplines — Ju Jitsu, Kendo, Judo, Aikido, Karate, Kung Fu and Taekwondo will be presented by experts in evening performances from Friday 18 to Saturday 26, from 7.30 p.m. to 8.30 p. m.

THIS IS A FREE ATTRACTION

THE CBA PUPPET PEOPLE

CENTENARY HALL, Watson Terrace Those two magical Puppet People from Brisbane, Gwen

and Peter Illiffe return once again to delight and mystify their Royal Show audiences.

The CBA Bank presents the Puppet People each day on centre stage in Centenary Hall (see Centenary Hall Program, page 41, for daily times).

Can you picture yourself behind the controls of one of the latest Cessna light aircraft?

You can really do it by visiting the Schutt Aviation stand in Smith Street.

And don't worry that your friends won't believe you got to "fly a Cessna" — you'll have a photo to prove it.

"LETS BREAK DOWN THE BARRIERS"

HALL OF INDUSTRIES, Smith Street In this the International Year for Disabled Persons, you

will see, by visiting the Hall of Industries in Smith Street. the ways in which the disabled make their contribution to the community.

Special displays within the Hall of Industries include the paintings of Neil Savage, a top Australian artist well known for the work he has done for disabled people.

The Pascoe Vale Rotary Club, Yooralla, the High City Industries Sheltered Workshop and the Goulburn Valley Sheltered Workshop have all contributed toward making this an excellent display.

Learn how the disabled are assisted to become involved people within the community, and how they attain their independence.

A feature of the Hall of Industry's I.Y.D.P. display will be the ski jump, specially designed for use by those people with disabilities.

A visit to the Hall of Industries will undoubtedly help you to "Break down the Barriers".

How to take the fear

out of living

alone.

An accident or a sudden illness can leave you without means of contact and the prospect of lying alone, hurt

or ill, for hours. So, if no-one knows when you need help you might

as well live on a desert island. It's all a matter of being able to communicate with other people when an

emergency arises. Monitor is an emergency communication system

which provides a Monitoring Service for distress calls 24 hours a day.

We can quickly summon help should you find yourself in a crisis. We take the fear out of living alone.

Monitor can also help you with your property security needs with either a local or monitored alarm system. Write or telephone now for further information about

our security systems.
