The Rotherfield Players have always encouraged and helped our junior players to appear on stage and this
policy has led not only to a strengthening of our troupe and a path to acting as an adult, but also given very many children confidence and articulation in their everyday lives. With this production of Sondheim’s ‘Into the Woods’ we have continued the tradition, but this time we have also added a big increase in juniors taking on production roles. Of course, where and when appropriate, there has been mentoring and assistance where inexperience or difficulties of time arise, but overall the juniors themselves have handled the majority of ‘off-stage’ jobs.
So what you will see and enjoy today is very much a junior production with all the joy, life and enthusiasm that the juniors bring to our group. Not to mention the fresh approach that a young mind will often employ.
As with the recent performance of ‘Little Voice’, this production once again moves Rotherfield Players another step forward in broadening and diversifying its activities – and these constant strivings (and successes) in new avenues are some of the major contributors to the continuing artistic growth of the Players.
So sit back and enjoy the production, and please consider joining us in whatever capacity you would feel appropriate – and perhaps you too, like the juniors, can grow your talents.

Co-Directing Into the Woods has been an experience we will never forget! These last few months of rehearsals with the juniors and putting visions into place has been amazing. The have been absolutely fantastic to work with, they've rehearsed with so much professionalism and particularly enthusiasm and it has just been a pleasure.
We've worked together well and have not yet clashed making sure we gave each other's ideas a go, sometimes failing but mostly succeeding. This show wouldn't have been possible with a great team behind us - most of those doing the roles for the very first time.
Libby McCarthy has been an amazing first time producer, with a little bit of guidance from the committee Libby has ensured the right amount of nagging was done to keep us on track. Larry Robinson has been a great stage manager and been at most rehearsals getting used to the unusual staging and movement which will hopefully help for a smooth transition between scenes. Holly-May Penny has coped well as a first time choreographer, some of her simple movements aren't that noticeable and blend in well. Niall Kiely has also done an amazing job as first time costume person, even though he had to depart midway for university, with great ideas and flare. Mark Tasker also has done a fantastic job with the creating the set, particularly the amazing Rapunzel tower. Lastly we would like to thank Simon Goddard for helping backstage and so much more.
I hope you enjoy the show, the juniors have worked very hard and we would like to thank them for making directing such an enjoyable experience.

Synopsis
Into the Woods, the 1988 Tony Award winner for both score and book of a musical, is a brilliantly conceived exploration of “happily ever after”. The show has an enchanting, moving and profound score by Stephen Sondheim, and a powerful, witty book by James Lapine.
Into the Woods is a magical, imaginative adventure told through Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm’s classic fairy tales. As the intricate plot unfolds, the childless baker and his Wife, cursed by the wicked Witch, go off into the woods in hopes of ridding themselves of the witch’s evil influence. There they encounter Cinderella, her Prince, Little Red Riding Hood, the Wolf, Jack, Rapunzel, and other fairy tale characters who are attempting to realize wishes of their own. With “tenderness and laughter”, Sondheim and Lapine take us through a maze that mirrors the complexity of everyday existence. Like the characters in Into the Woods, we end this journey aware of the moral consequences of our actions and the power of tolerance, community and shared sacrifice.
Next Production
The Rotherfield Players are delighted to announce that the Christmas Production (Jan 28/29/30th 2016) will take a break from our traditional pantomime, and instead we will be producing the childhood classic- Arthur Ransome’s ‘Swallows and Amazons’. This new play comes from the amazing creative team behind the National Theatre's War Horse, the pen of Helen Edmundson and features music and songs from The Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon.
All aboard the Swallow! Follow Captain John and his able crew as they set sail to Wildcat Island on an exotic adventure to encounter savages, capture dastardly pirates and defeat mortal enemies. An action-packed adventure, Swallows and Amazons is a story of an idyllic era, of endless summer evenings and the beauty of youthful imagination. This production will capitalise on the imagination, blending puppetry and physical theatre to submerge the audience (including participation) in this whimsical story of treachery on the highs seas… or lakes!! We welcome every one of all ages to come and get involved in any capacity including musicians!

2015 Charity
In 2014, The Rotherfield Players raised £1,000 for Taylor-Made Dreams; a charity set up by Suzi Mitchell, in memory of her late son Taylor, to enable children with life limiting illness achieve their dreams and provide the families with support at the most difficult of times. 2014 marked the centenary of World War One and as we reflected on this towards the end of the year, it seemed fitting to select the Rotherfield branch of The Royal British Legion as our chosen charity for 2015.
The Royal British Legion is the UK's leading Service charity providing care and support to serving members of the Armed Forces, veterans of all ages and their families. The Royal British Legion helps the whole Armed Forces community through welfare, comradeship and representation as well as being the Nation's custodian of Remembrance. All money raised will go towards supporting members of our local community who have been a member of the Armed Services (and/or still are) and their families. Amongst other services, the charity provides specialized support services within the home, as well as supporting families to have an opportunity to spend time together.
