As for the Mothers
Day meeting, since
many of our members
are women, I think the
focus has been a little
off key. Perhaps asking
our members to bring
Mothers they know
and treasure is more in
keeping with Mothers
Day , than asking peo-
ple to bring their
"wives". Just a thought.

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria hygiene kit stuffing team broke the world record by stuffing 150 bags with hygiene products in 18 minutes 7.2 seconds, shattering the world record by 31.9 seconds. Team captain, Bill “Flying Fingers” Libbon said, “We got off to a fast start, then slowed a little, but caught our second wind, and I knew the record was in the bag.” He went on to thank all of his team members Judy “Fast Hands” Hearn, Hardy “Flash Fingers” Hearn, Robbin “Faster Than A Speeding Bullet” Medina, Susan “Hand Jive” Rees, Sharon “I Don’t Remember This In The Wedding Vows” Henning, and John “Show Me Your Fingers” Henning. The team celebrated their record breaking performance with wine
and hors d’oeuvres provided by Judy and Hardy Hearn.

While The Rotator is extremely useful, There is much more information available on our Web-
site than can possibly be put in The Rotator.
If you have not seen it recently, please do so. One of the very interesting “Links” near the top of the page is a “Tab” called “Calendar.” Here you can find special dates to remember per-
taining to Rotary events. But this is only one interesting “Tab.” Check them all out.
And be sure and look at the “Photo Journals.” Cool stuff is appearing there!
You don’t need to log in. Just click this link!
Joe Goldberg and his fabulous BBQ Team were a big hit last Friday at The Heritage Oaks BBQ. A few pictures are here in The Rotator but to see them all check out the “Photo Jour-
nals” on our website.
We need a sign to put up when we are barbequing like this. Excellent exposure for our club.
Saturday was the day we gathered together and groomed and cleaned the Skinny Bear. As for me, although I have lived in Santa Maria for almost 30 years and had heard about the Skinny Bear, I did not know where it was located, nor did I know what the Skinny Bear had to offer. I was amazed at
what I found and saw. I will return to see more of this Skinny Bear’s offerings.
If you would like to get a taste of what I saw, check out the Photo Journals on our Website.

No news is good news I suppose.
Our Web Site has a lot of great information and links to many more goodies. You can access almost any-
thing “Rotary” from our Web Site.
If you are having any problems logging on, or what ever, please let me know. I will resolve the issue.
In addition, if you need any help knowing how to navigate the system, please let me know. I will be happy
to give you a private tutorial.
Let’s use this great resource. Frank Culley
One of the ways the General Membership can have input into the workings of the Club is to attend our Board meetings. Board
meetings are open to everyone and you are encouraged to attend.
May 11th @ 5:30 PM The Historic Santa Maria Inn Ranchero Room
President Elect Bob Frias and I have decided to invite both 09-10 and 10-11 board members to this meeting, so we've changed the venue to the SM Inn. Additionally, we'll be serving wine, soft drinks and a cheese/fruit platter, so please everyone, plan to join us. I've reserved the room until 8 pm if anyone can stay to socialize. See you then! Sober Prom - Righetti HS
Our club was asked if we can support the upcoming Sober Prom at Righetti High School. If any of our
member businesses would like to help, here is info:
On Saturday May 8 Fighting Back Santa Maria Valley will be sponsoring a sober prom for
Righetti Students. This event will be from 12:00 AM to 3:00 AM. The purpose of this event
is to provide a safe and fun place for students to attend after their prom.
I have attached a letter that explains it in more detail.
All of these students will be high school graduates and many will be attending college. For
that reason we would like to know if the Rotary Club can support this event by donating
any item that a college student might use. These items will be raffled at this event.
Thanks for your cooperation and I hope to hear from you soon!!

Fellow Rotarians, it is that time of year where we select our community recipients of our Paul Harris Fellowship award. We have a couple of names from last year, but do not want to over-look anyone that might be especially deserving of the award. Any suggestions to Susan or a board member, would be greatly appreciated.
Tom Martinez
Please note that our regular meeting on May 18th will be an offsite at the Boys and Girls Club.

Dear Rotary Club,
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states that
substance abuse is the nation’s number one health problem. Substance abuse
has become an increasing problem amongst our youth. Over the past five
years key community leaders have developed a passion for combating the
substance abuse problem in our community and formed a strong coalition to
sustain these efforts: Fighting Back Santa Maria Valley (FBSMV). The
purpose of FBSMV is to make a difference in the lives of children, teens,
and their families by offering a variety of prevention and educational
services to help address issues of substance abuse and other related
delinquent behaviors.
One of the ways that FBSMV does this is by hosting a Sober Prom. This
event will be held on May 8, 2010 from 12:00-3:00 AM. The objective is to
offer an alternative to our youth, so they can have a fun and secure place to
go after prom.
This is your chance to be a part of that impact. Fighting Back Santa Maria
Valley is a 501c3 non-profit organization which relies solely on
contributions from local businesses and corporations to sustain our coalition
efforts. Without supporters like you we would not be able to make “Sober
Prom” possible to our youth. Thank you for your support in donating any
of these items; a mp3 player, microwave, small fridge, or other college
related items to be raffle at this event. If you have any questions regarding
this request or the program, please feel free to contact us at
805-346-1774.
With your help we can continue to encourage and support our youth and
children to make better choices by taking another step towards the “fight”
against substance abuse in our community.
Respectfully,
Jada Clark
