At the 1917 convention, outgoing RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed to set up an endowment “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians (like you) and friends of your Foundation who share its vision of a better world. Contributions to the Annual Fund supports Foundation activities. Contributions are credited to the donor and the donor’s club, and they count toward the club’s and district’s Annual Fund goals. Contributions to the Annual Fund enter the SHARE system and generate District Designated Funds (DDF), which are used to support local and international projects.

Since 1985, eradicating polio has been Rotary’s top priority . Members have donated over $1.5 billion dollars and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. In September 2015, type 2 wild poliovirus was declared eradicated by the World Health Organization. THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPPORT OF THIS CAMPAIGN! Today, the virus is limited to three countries – Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria - Nigeria intensified surveillance activities to pinpoint where the virus is circulating after cases were detected over the summer. - In Pakistan, innovative tactics are being used to focus polio immunization drives. Health workers are trained in the use of cellphone data reporting, which allows real-time recording of immunization coverage and public health surveys of populations. - In Afghanistan, the program continues to adapt in order to reach the maximum number of children possible despite a volatile security situation.

As an Annual Giving officer, I promote giving to the Annual Fund. Contributions to the Annual Fund are used to fund local and international humanitarian projects. Across the almost 100 years of the Rotary Foundation and the six years that I have been working with Rotarians at all levels across the organization, I am inspired by work that your Rotary Foundation and you do around the world. You help women like Dona Ninfa, one of 190 million people around the world who are funding their business endeavors through microfinance. With a microcredit loan from the Rotary Foundation she was able to take business training classes and is now able to increase her household income by selling vegetables at the local market. Your gift to the Annual Fund supports Rotarian driven projects just like these. Projects that are created at the local level and are developed to meet the true needs of the community.

When I ask people why they support The Rotary Foundation and the Annual Fund, many say they give because your Foundation is the only organization they know of where when you give, you get something back. When you contribute to Annual Fund-SHARE, fifty percent of your gift goes back to your district. Say you make a leadership gift of $500 dollars to Annual Fund-SHARE. For three years, your contribution is invested. During that time the investment earnings have been historically used to pay for the administrative and operational expenses of The Foundation. At the end of the 3 years that money is made available to fund your projects. {CLICK} 50% of the contribution comes back to your district through District Designated Funds (DDF) - $250. This is money your district can use to help fund your local and international projects. {CLICK} The other 50% goes to the World Fund and is used to fund other Foundation programs or at the Trustees discretion. How many of your clubs have participated in a global grant? The World Fund is the source of the Rotary International match for your Global Grants. The funds you have access to next year are a result of contributions made four years ago. This is why it is so important to maintain consistent support of the Foundation in your club.

The impact of The Rotary Foundation is dependent upon you. Your support of Annual Fund-SHARE translates into the district and global grants used by your club to help fund those projects that change lives! Several years ago we started a campaign for the Annual Fund called: Every Rotarian Every Year. How many of you have heard of Every Rotarian Every Year? This campaign is based on the simple idea that if every Rotarian gave SOMETHING, every year there would be nothing the Foundation couldn’t accomplish. Here is a statistic that surprises many Rotarians: only one-third of Rotarians give to the Foundation. In your district, only x % of club members contributed last year. Can you imagine how many more people Rotary could reach if 100% of your club members made a contribution of any size?

With contributions of $85/month or $250/quarter Rotarians and friends can opt to join the Paul Harris Society, recognizing and thanking donors who contribute $1000 or more each year to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus, or an approved Foundation grant. Make a one-time gift online at www.rotary.org/give. Contribute via mail by filling out a Rotary Foundation contribution form.
