Apologies by Saturday pm please
Greetings to all,
This week’s “soup saver” meeting held as a fundraiser for End Polio Now was a
huge success. The range of several different types of delicious homemade soup,
together with fresh crusty bread rolls, made for a very satisfying meal with great
fellowship. And in our own special way we managed to combine two significant
Rotary activities by combining the meal with Hat Day for Mental Health. The variety
of hats worn by members and partners at this annual activity never ceases to amaze
me.
Sadly we heard the news of the passing of Gail Critchley on Tuesday morning.
Gail has been very actively involved in club events throughout Ian’s time in Rotary,
and was a great friend to everyone. Personally, one of my fondest memories of Gail
was of the first Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? meal I attended as a club member,
that was hosted by Ian and Gail. Gail had prepared a wonderful three-course meal,
and the dinner and follow-up lasted until at least 1am! Our deepest sympathies to Ian
and his family at this time.
On another sad note, John Iriks and his family had another loss with the passing of
his sister Christine on Monday morning. Despite battling ill health, Christine had
managed to farewell her mother the previous week together with the rest of her
family. Our condolences to the entire Iriks family.
My parting words for this week: cherish your loved ones, and make the most of
your time with them.

Our Food and Wine tour on Saturday 21 October was a huge success. Many thanks to Eric Blogg for acting as bus driver for the day, and safely bringing us to each venue. All went
accordingly with pick-up and drop-off.
“Soup Saver” night has run very smoothly, with all proceeds raised through meal costs and
raffles going to End Polio Now in recognition of World Polio Day (October 24). Special
thanks to the following people for providing homemade soup for this evening: Eric and
Gladys, James and Cathy, Brian and Colleen, Mike Metcalf, Bob and Wendy, Greg and
Marge.
Mon 6 November: Edd Samut previously offered his home as a venue for a BBQ meeting; this plan has been reviewed and amended in light of Ann Samut’s current health status. We
will have a restaurant meeting instead. This will be a partners night.
Christmas party to be held on Sunday 10 December from 9am to 12 noon at the Kwinana Adventure Park. Members are encouraged to bring along their children and grandchildren.
We will be inviting 8-10 disadvantaged families, to be selected by Victory for Life church.
Planning to put together some food hampers for these disadvantaged families; the Spud Shed
has agreed to donate food for these hampers.

Soup Saver Night – Celebration of World Polio Day
A night of great fellowship – acknowledging both World Polio Day and Mental Health
Visitors Rennis and Maria from SA
World Polio Day was established by Rotary International over a decade ago to commemorate the birth of
Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis. Use of this inactivated
poliovirus vaccine and subsequent widespread use of the oral poliovirus, developed by Albert Sabin, led to the establishment of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988. As of 2013, GPEI had reduced polio
worldwide by 99%.
Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease. There is no cure, but there are safe and effective
vaccines. Polio can be prevented through immunization. Polio vaccine, given multiple times, almost always
protects a child for life. The strategy to eradicate polio is therefore based on preventing infection by
immunizing every child until transmission stops and the world is polio-free.
