 THE CATHEDRAL OF THE SOUL

 T SEEMS fitting that in theissue of this magazine forthe beginning of the year1930 and at practically thetwenty-first year of our Rosicrucian activities in America under the present cycle,

I should have the opportunity to announce the existence of a new andbeautiful star in the Cosmic, which willhereafter be known as the Cathedral of the Soul.

Fourteen years ago, the first foundation stones of this invisible immaterialyet not intangible cathedral were laidby me with due ceremony and reverential consideration for the part I mightbe taking in a work that seemed to beCosmically directed and divinely decreed. Having prayerfully received and

considered the instructions for thisgreat work for seven years, it was my joy to bring the inspiration into someform of earthly manifestation and thusfourteen years ago, the plan that wasdecreed seven years previously becamea living Cosmic reality.

Our members are to hear much aboutthis Cathedral of the Soul in the nearfuture, and at present I wish merely toannounce its name and present to youa brief picture of what it is. This cathedral is that great holy of holies and

Cosmic sanctum maintained by thebeams of thought waves of thousandsof our most advanced members, whohave been prepared and trained to directthese beams of thought at certain periods of the day and the week towardone central point, and there becomes amanifest power, a creative force, ahealth giving and peace giving nucleusfar removed from the material trials andproblems, limitations and destructiveelements of the earth plane.

While men have been busy planning,building, and directing great spires andtowers of earthly cathedrals that wouldreach high into the heavens and becomethe material abiding place for those indevotion and meditation, we have beencreating this cathedral of prayer and

illumination, Cosmic joy, and peacehigh above every material plane andascent into the Cosmic itself.

In this cathedral there will be themusic of the spheres and the chimes of Cosmic rhythm, there will come fromits spire the call to worship at varioushours of the day and week throughoutthe years to come, and our preparedand advanced members will reach thiscathedral with their thoughts and theirsoul consciousness and dwell thereinand carry on the great work of biddingothers welcome, touching them with thehand of fellowship and the heart of sympathetic understanding. From itshigh altar will go forth the illuminatingwords of Cosmic inspiration and divineillumination. Into this great cathedralwe will call those who are seeking forthe first portal of the Cosmic Assembly.Hereafter, it will be our ambition andour pleasure to direct the sincere andthe devout, the worthy and the needyto this great cathedral. The story of what it is and what it means will be

issued in a beautiful booklet to aid thosewho are starting on the path with theirgaze turning upward, away from thedesire for knowledge of a material nature, and seeking the more glorious lifegiving, soul inspiring illumination of theCosmic hosts.

 The Cathedral of the Soul shall beyour Cathedral and mine, and the dwelling place of the great masters of thepast and future.

Mortal Mind

AN EXPLANATION OF THI S WESTERN-WORLD TERM

N interpreting the phases of mind, we attempt to conveyan understanding of the matter by dividing it into twofunctional domains, objectiveand subjective. In reality,there cannot be two separate

and distinct minds or even elementsthereof. All mind is one mind and anyother comprehension of the matter cando nothing save lead the student astrayand preclude attainment of the goal forwhich we are so earnestly striving. Weare reminded many times in our weeklylectures that there is but one mind evenas there is but one Soul, one God. Youwill find it highly profitable to readcarefully the Rosicrucian explanation of this subject in the Manual under threeheadings, MIND; OBJECTIVE MIND

and SUBJECTIVE MIND. The ideaof “ONENESS” is very important andshould never be lost sight of for amoment. On the other hand, I think youwill agree with me that it is a verysimple or common error to fall into thehabit of thinking of the mind as havingtwo separate and distinct parts whichthrough some mysterious process wemust endeavor to bring together in orderthat we may rise to the pinnacle of illumination. It will thus pay you to goover these definitions from time to timefor the purpose of reminding yourself of the correct and unalterable understanding of the question.

Some of the metaphysical schools setforth the claim that Mortal Mind is“nothing, claiming to be something,” yetin opposition to this it is stated that“MIND" is God, drawing a very sharpdistinction between Mind and MortalMind. We consider these two phasesas objective and subjective divisions of the outer mind. Practically all of thesacred, mystical, and philosophical writ

ings hold firmly to the premise of ONEMIND, so we, as Rosicrucians, are notalone in our convictions.

We know that the objective phase of Mind is that part or portion which dealswith and comprehends all things of amaterial nature and that it is indispensable to manifestation on the earth planefor this plane agrees with the vibratoryperiod of the objective mind and becomes cognizable to the material sensesbecause of this fact. It is not possible todeny out of existence this mortal or ob

 jective phase through any known process of thinking and assume the sub

 jective element indefinitely. The mysticknows this and proves it to his ownsatisfaction for he is able to utilize bothphases through the application of theLaw of vibration to the physical or

ganism. To condemn or deny the existence of the Mortal or Objective phase of mindis a serious mistake and absolutely in-defensable. We find at time of transition that this phase of mind withdrawsor separates from the physical shell justwhich combine in the manifestation of as do all other attributes and qualitieslife, intelligence, and consciousness. Noperson has ever succeeded in detachinghimself from the objective or mortalmind and living entirely and continuously in the divine phase. It cannot beaccomplished for the simple reason thatwe have but ONE MIND to begin withand our consciousness, development,and evolution is determined solely bythe period or cycle of vibration in whichwe have automatically placed ourselvesin exact accordance with the progresswe have made in this incarnation aswell as preceding ones.

 The nature of mind is vibratory andeach person possesses his or her specific rate or period in the scale which we

have entitled ourselves to occupy byreason of the effort we have made in ourquest for light, knowledge, and understanding. As our thinking, acting, andattitudes change and begin to approachthe standard as set forth in the many

laws and principles given you in ourlectures, then and then only do we begin to raise the level of the vibratoryperiod of the objective consciousness. The mere reading of the lectures willbe of no advantage to you in yoursearch for the . Truth of Being andneither will this procedure enable youto solve your problems, convert sicknessinto health, lack into abundance, or unhappiness into happiness. To accomplish these things we must not only havean intellectual comprehension but mustwreave these laws and principles into thefabric of our lives.

 To illustrate the point just referredto let us consider certain of the attitudes of mind frequently assumed suchas hatred, anger, bitterness, resentment,and the many variations thereof. Wemay have achieved a perfect intellectualunderstanding of the many laws andprinciples given to us and earnestlydesire to effect and change the inharmonious conditions which have appearedin our lives and yet we make no effortwhatever to eliminate from our objective

consciousness the habit of thinkingbitter, hateful, angry, resentful thoughtsabout others or even about the conditions which have become manifest to us.Such practice violates the Law of Loveand its variations such as consideration,kindliness, good-will, and tolerance. If we will examine carefully we will findthat the very conditions we would destroy or change are merely the reflectionor fruits of past and even present unfortunate processes of thinking. In otherwords, each negative, destructivethought has its negative counterpart

which must eventually come into manifestation. The same is likewise true of positive, constructive thoughts but it isyour privilege to choose the course youwill pursue. Intellectual understandingis a sort of preliminary step and has itsreward but it is not a full or completeone by any manner of means. A ppli ca- tion of understanding is essential andwithout it no important change in ouraffairs can be accomplished which

means that but a very slight variation inthe period of vibration of the consciousness can take place through the mereacquisition of knowledge.

 You may liken the mind, or ratherits manifestation, to a thermometer hav

ing many graduations, we will say zeroto 100 degrees above. The use of thisset of figures has no specific underlyingmeaning aside from the point to be illustrated. Love has the highest knownperiod of vibration, not just the 'word“love” but the love you can actuallycome to feel toward your fellows andtoward all creation, the love whichbecomes part of your life and whichrules your acts and attitudes in fair and

 just dealings with all mankind, allthings and all conditions. We will say,therefore, that Love represents a vibratory period of 100 degrees or perfection.Considering the matter from this anglewe may properly say that a well balanced man would represent a vibratoryperiod of 50 degrees but there are fewindeed who have attained to this position. Because we are constantly violating the Spiritual Laws by grace of which we are permitted to exist, ourperiod may be but 10 degrees, but bearin mind that very few have the samevibratory period because of the variation in their state or stage of evolution.

Some are higher, some lower, accordingto the effort which has been made tochange the period. The lower half of the scale from 0 degrees to 50 degreesrepresents the vibratory period of theearth plane, whereas 51 degrees to 100degrees represents the period of thecosmic plane. If our period stands at50 degrees we have quite a journey before us to reach the midway point of 50degrees where we shall be able to attuneourselves at will with the higher vibrations of mind and thus function consciously and intelligently within thesehigher and finer gradations. If we areto raise the level of our consciousnessabove the 20-degree mark we must begin to conform vigorously with the lawsand principles which govern each andevery advance. If we are not enjoyinggood health, that should be our firstgoal for that attribute is without doubtthe most important requirement forthose who seek illumination. The ab

sence of health merely means that ourprocesses of thinking have been wrongand that they must be changed, corrected. and brought into harmony with thelaws of health. Health as we know itsimply means the harmonious, perfectfunctioning of each and every organwithin the physical body. The body isa highly important factor in all development, for it is the machine, the dynamothrough which the same forces manifeston the earth plane. Also, it is the holytemple of God wherein He dwellsawaiting the day and hour when weshall find Him and permit the unfoldingof all His grace, beauty, love, beneficence, and perfection. No piece of machinery will function properly if it isimpaired, neglected, or worn out. We

have only to comply with the law if wewould have this marvelous human machine manifest the harmony and perfection which is our birthright.

As has been stated above, there is butone mind and that is the Cosmic mind,and so that part which is called mortalor objective is but a phase of the onemind identifying itself in each individualin the degree of its evolved state in thescale of consciousness. It is this mortalor objective standard which we are endeavoring to improve and elevate to a

higher applied understanding of minditself, through study, application of thelaws, and through experience. Yourprogress in this direction will be gaugedsolely by the character of the effort youmake to harmonize your thoughts, acts,and attitudes with the principles whichare given us.

 You will see in reality that there is nosuch thing as mortal or objective mind,but rather that these terms simply interpret the varying degrees of con

sciousness in accordance with the vibratory period of the plane upon which welive. The physical body is not immortalnor is any other manifestation of matteryet we cannot destroy these things. Wemay change their nature and return thecomponent elements to their originalsources the earth and air, but nothing islost. As these elements are released,they are thus made ready for producingthe same or other manifestations of matter whenever and wherever a demandexists. Everything is in motion, changeand exchange; every action is compensated for by reaction, yet nothing is destroyed. The physical body is but aninstrument which the soul utilizes formanifestat i on on earth. Themind is also  an instrument and through it we raise

the objective and moral consciousnessto a point nearer and nearer the periodof equality with the higher Cosmic elements and vibratory cycle of the fullness of Cosmic consciousness. Eachsoul must pass successively througheach vibratory period of consciousnessin the scale in the process of evolutionand, therefore, it becomes our sacredduty to hasten our journey by everstriving with diligence and perseverance to improve our position in the scalefor this is one of life's most profoundand important purposes. We may deferand delay, but in doing so we exact apenalty or we may accelerate the process and achieve the reward whichawaits those who have ears to hear,eyes to see, and the will to do.

Be glad and give thanks for life andits experiences and the privilege whichis yours to solve all problems and striveto know that there are none which willnot yield to understanding if you willcooperate with rather than oppose thelaws.

Personal MagnetismA MODERN FORM OF AN OLD, ORIENTAL LAW

OME years ago, the subjectof personal magnetism wasgiven considerable thoughtand attention. Magazinesand newspapers speculatedupon the subject, with various articles, by various writ

ers; many books and pamphlets wereput on the market, claiming to deal withthe subject in a learned way, and instruct the aspiring student in its lawsand principles.

Little understood, and seeming to refer to some strange quality .possessedby a "chosen” few, and mysterious in itspotent ability to influence and attractothers who came within range of itssubtle power, personal magnetism became the tool of the charlatan, and theenvy of all who failed in life’s struggles.

Some of the more advanced thoughtwriters and lecturers claimed to know,and teach, the secret of the manner of how this silent N iagara of Power couldbe used to bring prosperity, health, andhappiness, but what little they did knowabout it was quickly realized, withoutrevealing any real laws and principles,and the seeker was left to deciphermany strange terms and phrases, andpractice foolish mental exercises; whichleft him stranded with blasted hopes.

But, in spite of the fact that very lit

tle was known of personal magnetismin those days, there is such a subtleforce radiating from the human body.

 This force may be truly termed ‘‘Personal Magnetism,” because the modernmystic, in his scientific laboratory, hasproven that there is a magnetic fieldsurrounding the body, and that it existswithin the body and emanates therefrom. It is in the human body becauseof the law which reveals itself in the

examination and study of any physicalmass which contains a magnetic quality, or magnetism.

It is a well-known fact, and proventhrough scientific experiments, that ablind person, walking along the street,or moving about in his home, does not

depend solely upon his touch to guidehim when approaching a wall, or otherobstacle, and he will also keenly appreciate the fact when in the presence of another. It has been found, and scientifically proven, that the magnetic auraextends so far in front of their physicalbodies, that the blind, whose delicatesenses are strongly developed, can actually feel their magnetic auras touchingan obstacle long before they reach andcontact that obstacle with their physicalbodies and senses. Delicate instruments have shown that the aura, emanating from the human body, extendsas far as ten feet and radiates alwaysat least five feet in all directions.

 Just think of it from each human being there emanates radiations of a certain force or energy, which extends atleast five feet, and as much as ten feetfrom the body. The question to be considered is: ‘‘What is this aura, how doesit manifest, attract, repulse, and howmay it be controlled?” Before we mayanswer this question, it is necessarythat we know something of the mag

netic field in all things. Therefore, let ustake the electron—that as yet invisibleparticle which science tells us composesthe atom, but of which they know solittle, and may only speculate upon, sofar as they have gone. The mystic, however, in his laboratory, has gone fartherthan outside science and knows a fewthings regarding the electron.

Let us say, then, that an electron isthe smallest particle entering into the

composition of matter; in the electron wefind that there are dual forces at work,and these forces are the positive andnegative forces, the same as in any creative cell. Now the vibrations whichemanate from any mass of matter, convey the quality of radiation accordingto the nature of the predominating forcewithin the mass. Thus, whatever quality is sent out from the mass, eitherpositive or negative, that quality becomes what is known as “polarity” andthe mass is said to be of a positive polarity or of a negative polarity. Now,any mass of matter radiates either apositive or negative force and thus isone or the other of the two polarities. The vibrations emanating from matterare positive or negative vibrations and

are governed in their polarity by thegoverning nature, or quality, of theforces within the combined electronswhich make up the atoms in any massof gross matter. Thus, do we see thatthe positive or negative forces withinthe electrons are not equal, but thatone or the other predominates and determines the polarity. And so, the vibrations, emanating from any form of matter, have a magnetic influence uponall other forms of matter, and will beattracted to, or repulsed by other matter, in accordance with the law of pol

arities, the positive attracting the negative and repulsing the positive and viceversa.

In the ordinary horse-shoe, or otherpermanent magnet, we also find a goodillustration of the attractive force, ormagnetism which emanates from thevibrations of a piece of iron. Extending from such magnets, for a short distance, is that field or area wherein magnetic attraction will occur. You haveprobably tried experiments with magnets yourself and have seen how themagnet will cause a needle or otherpieces of iron, or steel, to jump up andbecome attached to one of the poles of the magnet as soon as the magnet isbrought near enough to the needle toaffect it with the magnetic aura; assoon as the needle enters the zone, orfield of attraction, it cannot resist theforce and will immediately be attractedto the magnet’s pole and remain thereuntil pulled away.

Now the magnetism which emanates

from the human body is truly magneticin the same sense as is the magnetismof the ordinary magnet, but the term“magnetism” as applied to the humanbody, is used in connection with physical forces or energies within the bodythat are dual, in nature, consisting of the two opposites of energy, or vitalism, blended by their attraction foreach other. This energy, or vitalism, ormagnetism, surrounds the human bodybecause it emanates from the two opposite energies in the human body andthus derives its essence. And so, thevital force, that is to say, the life force,which is associated with, and controlledby the mind of the soul in man, blendswith the physical, material, bodily energies to create this magnetic aura, and

this aura is of a positive or negativepolarity, according to the nature of thepredominating polarity causing itsmake-up. Thus is a person said to bepositive or negative.

Under certain circumstances, theaura may be perceived with the nakedeye. Those who see it most readily areclairvoyants, but when certain physicalconditions are brought into use .eitherthrough natural or scientic causes orconditions, most anyone may perceivethe human aura. Thus it is that “per

sonal magnetism” is no longer the unseen, mysterious force—the intangiblething it was some years ago, for itmay now be seen, measured, felt, deflected, reflected, weighed, neutralized,increased, decreased, and otherwise affected mechanically and by use of thehuman Will.

And here we come to find is the greatsecret which so many teachers and investigators failed to discover, in theearlier days of the history of “personalmagnetism.” It is that the HUIS AN

WILL—that strange, directive, controlling, determining power—always atthe command of the human intellect—CAN ACT UALLY—not theoretically— CONTROL AND AFFECT

 THE RADIATING VIBRATIONSCALLED PERSONAL MAGNETISM.

What then is this personal magnetism? It must be associated directlywith, or be under the supervision of

the mind, or intellect. It must also beassociated with the vital energy of thehuman body, for we find the magneticradiations from the human body (theaura) affected by the standard orstrength of the vital force in the body,

fluctuating and vascillating as the vitality of the body changes.In simple words, we must look to the

mind, which is an attribute of the soul,for the secret of and key to personalmagnetism, because the mind and vitallife force are related, and life is underthe direct control of the mind, so far as“life" itself, and not the body, is concerned.

And how does the aura of a personlook, when seen under proper conditions? The aura RADIATES andmanifests in color vibrations. If you

could see the emanations of the vibrations constituting the aura surroundingthe human body, you would see variouscolors, in different shades and blends,each one of which signifies a certainphysical or mental condition as expressed inwardly and reflected outwardly, and this reflection, reflectingoutwardly through vibrations, form theaura, and this aura is really the outerexpression of the personality of thesoul’s development, making up what iscommonly termed “personality.”

And there you have it: A MagneticPersonality, or Personal Magnetism.Let us now make an examination and

analysis of magnetic personality, so thatwe may arrive at a conclusion regardingthe qualities, conditions, or nature of it.If we can note any distinction fromsuch observation, or comparison, let usdo so, and analyze it thoroughly.

 The first observation we make is tobe found in the child. Why is it thatchildren are so wonderfully attractiveto every human being? What qualitiesor expressions do we find in the child?

Upon going into these questions wefind: a, simplicity; b, innocence; c, purity of mind ;d, sincerity; e, enthusiasm;f, trust; g, absolute faith; h, appreciation; i, imagination; j, lack of doubt;k, joyousness of living; 1, vitality; m,ready forgiveness; n, love of all things.

Now then: If the mind directly affects, or controls, the vital life force,and the magnetic aura, what do yousuppose would be the nature, or ex

pression, of a child possessing the qualities named above? And nearly everychild between the age of two and sixpossesses all of them. Can you not seethen the cause for the attraction of allkinds of people to the personality of 

the child? There we find certain statesof CONSCIOUSNESS which producedefinite effects so far as the auras areconcerned. This is so because the childhas not as yet contacted the world sufficiently to affect its outlook upon lifeand things, in general. As the childgrows older, it contacts more and moreof world life and conditions with theeffect that it grows accustomed to conventionalities, and opinions, and soforth. Such things as these affect thesimple child-consciousness and changesit; doubt creeps in, worry begins tomake itself felt; fear of certain peopleand things is brought about, and inview of all this, the child no longer expresses in and through simplicity of mind, but is influenced and affected byits surroundings.

Let us refer to another type. Thereare many people who are very beautiful in features, but whose personality,or magnetism, is limited, or lacking, soto speak. D. W . Griffith, the motionpicture director, stated in an interviewthat the manner in which he chose peo

ple for his stars, on the screen, was bylooking for the inner light of the applicant. By this he meant that he lookedfor a certain expression, or manifestation, of personality which indicatedthat, through experience, developmentor unfoldment, a real soul personalitywas expressing before him; this hecalled the inner light, and it is his supreme test to determine whether or notthe applicant would be able to fill thepart.

Let us now consider two distinct anddifferent types of personality. In thefirst we will say the person possessesgreat energy and this means health,strength, power, enthusiasm, activity,and love of life. He desires nothingbut happiness out of life and strives todo everything that will make for a continued existence of happiness. By thinking properly he raises his degree of magnetism in positive polarity and thus

radiates a powerful positive aura. If such a person were to stand ten or fif-ten feet away from you, you would beunconsciously impelled to turn aroundand notice him. His radiant magneticaura, or soul vibrations, would attractyou strongly. You would, perhaps,mentally tell yourself that here was aman who was ‘ big.”

On the other hand, we will take a manwho is weak, physically and mentally.Not so much so as to be a mental defective, but just enough as to cause himto lack ambition, enthusiasm, activity,health, strength, and desire to make of himself the highest possible type of man. Here, then, would we find aman unnoticed; a man whose aurawould be but very faint and extending

not more than a few inches from hisbody. He would be a man who didvery little of his own thinking, holdingthoughts of hatred and revenge againstthose who prevented him from carryingout his will, or who opposed his views;he would be a man bounds down by thechains of bigotry, and one who wouldbe very hard to acknowledge he waswrong in a thing, even though the mostpositive proof was brought to bear uponthat view. Such a man would radiatean aura of a negative polarity so weakas to almost be absolutely neutral. He

would have very few real friends, if any, and would amount to a burdenupon his own family.

Make note of the difference betweenthese two types and therein you willfind the secret, the secret of the stateof consciousness that causes us to possess the personal magnetism we havebeen seeking all the time. Rememberthat it is the soul and mind, or consciousness of man that ULTIMATELY determines the quality of his auraand magnetic attraction.

If everyone’s soul were permitted,from childhood, to give its expressionof perfection in all thought and activity, then each of us would be expressing the highest possible form of magnetic attraction. Why? Because MANIS LIKE A SUN, and man, naturally,should be living perfectly—should bea living fire, or force of sunshine andLove. Why then is he not magnetic?Simply because man, as a rule, is far

below the normal standard of what manshould be. His life and thinking andexpression is ABNORMAL, becausehe is lacking in those vital elements of soul, and consciousness, which go to

make a perfect life ,and radiate the activities of love and happiness. Wherelove is lacking in the heart of a humanbeing, everything vital to life is lacking, just as the plant could not exist were itnot nourished by the loving power of the sun’s rays.

Man’s soul WAN TS to express itsDivine qualities on earth, and thesequalities may be summed up in oneword—LOVE. The complete love of the soul, which brings out all its beauty, perfection, wisdom, and glory,makes man what his God intended heshould be—the Image of Himself.Man, with his finite, objective, limited,understanding, has divided the qualityof Divine Love into words, ideas, andfancies, but for all of that, the Divinityof Love remains unchanged and willexpress itself whenever man allows hisobjective self to be put aside and thuscannot interfere with the Divine expression. What man calls kindness, patience,sincerity, truth, humility, goodness,sympathy, understanding, appreciation,recognition and forgiveness, are but

phases of the one and the same thingcalled Divine Love.

Can it be possible for one to changehis polarity from negative to positiveand thus acquire a strong, attractive,personal magnetism? Yes, certainly!One has but to polarize himself to thepositive force by raising his consciousness through thoughts of love and allthat is contained and meant by thatword—to live in peace with himself andthe world about him, to do his level bestto be a credit to the world, to endeavorto be above such petty things as hatred, jealousy, vanity, conceit, and to allowthe Divine Love within him to expressoutwardly. It is the easiest thing inthe world to do this if you will butmake the conscious effort to do it andcontinue to do it in spite of the firstfew failures. We have all become enslaved by wrong thinking, and we mustbreak the chains that bind us by changing the process of thinking and raising

our thoughts to higher and more idealthings.

And so, if you wish to live the radiant life—full of vitality( activity, joy,and love ,you must first remove fromyour consciousness all forms of destruc

tive thinking and allow your soul, yourreal self, to express its perfection andreflect its magnetic strength and power.

 Then will others recognize and appreciate you for you will become a powerin the world for the betterment of allhumanity and to the glory of God.

It is well known to the mystics thatGod has given man all the strength andpower to help himself toward higherthings. Certainly this is true, andevery person on earth who is in possession of ordinary mental ability canclothe himself with a radiant, magneticpersonality. You have the power to dothis, but you must make the effort todo it. Just as the electric dynamo is capable of producing the power to createlight, and power, but cannot do this

until it has received the driving powerto set it in motion, so you, too, possessthe ability to raise yourself and becomewhatever you will, but not until you setthat power in motion and make the conscious effort to keep it going.

God cannot and will not help anyonewho will not make the conscious effortto help himself. But, when you domake the effort and are doing your levelbest—and remember that your “best”is better than you have ever done—thenwill help be given you to continue alongthe path, for with the effort and continued effort you make, your soul willgradually be freed from the shacklesthat now bind it to the false conceptionsand begin to express freely and perfectly, drawing from the infinite sourceof power for all it needs and requiresto keep going, producing and creatingthe power you require. May you makethe effort and reap the reward of Divine Love which brings to the soulPeace Profound.

Daring To Do

A LITTLE ESSAY ON AN IMPORTANT MYSTIC PRINCIPLE

■OMEWHERE in the earlyGrades of our study Ilearned an old Rosicrucianproverb, which said: “I f youdare to do, the Cosmic willgive you the power to do.” Iwonder how many have ever

analyzed the mighty truthfulness of this law and how many haveever tested it in a practical way.

 The explanation of the law is simple.Once we have learned how to do thingsand when to do them, and have learnedhow the law of compensation operatesand that there is an inevitable price tobe paid for everything we do that iswrong, and an unexpected rewardcredited to us whenever we do the thing

that is right, we are prepared by thisknowledge to do things. If in the faceof our knowledge of the foregoing, wedare to do anything, we will find ourselves suddenly in possession of thepower to do it. Of course, the realsignificance of the law lies in the fact

that with the knowledge we possess of all natural laws, and all methods of producing definite results, we seldomdare to do things that we should not do,and usually dare to do only thosethings that are right to do.

Perhaps the easiest way to realizethe significance is to think of the opposite of the statement. The oppositethought might be expressed in this wise:“Fearing to do, we find ourselves un

able to do.” Now the truthfulness of the proverb becomes apparent. Moreof us in this life are deprived of thepower to do things through our fearthan are given power to do thingsthrough our daring. My own personal

observation in my life and in the livesof many around me in my business andsocial affairs, has shown me that moremen and women are enslaved to theirpositions and unable to attain the heightsthey should attain, through the fear theyhave than those who have been Cos-mically blessed and rewarded with anunusual power to surmount all obstaclesand attain greater heights. In fact, onlyabout one person out of a thousand hasprepared himself by study and development to dare to do the things that othersfear to do, and fully 999 out of a thou

sand stand trembling, hesitating, andintimidated because of the fear that isin their hearts and minds.

In testing the working of the law, Ihave found many unique demonstrations, or perhaps I should say illustrations, of the beneficence of this greatlaw. I remember the first surprisingdemonstration of it when I was confronted with the opportunity to meetan emergency in someone else’s life bytaking the very last dollar from my personal reserve funds and impulsively giving it to the needy one. For an hour mymind vacillated between what must havebeen a Cosmic impulse to give and givefreely, and an earthly impulse to bemindful of my own future, my ownpresent obligations, and an ever pending emergency that would call for everydollar I could secure. But in my finalanalysis of the matter, my studies withthe Rosicrucian teachings made plain tome that the law of compensation wouldnot forget my impulsive act and wouldnot punish me for a good deed. Therecame to my mind no thought of a re

ward for the goodness I might do, butmerely the assurance that I would notsuffer if I did what was right. In otherwords, the teachings removed the fear  that held back my impulsiveness, andwith the fear removed, I dared to dothat which I had feared to do, andwhich any other average man in myposition would have feared also to do.Daring to do, however, I drew from myaccount every dollar I possessed and

placed it quickly into the hands of myfriend. Long before he could possiblyreturn any portion of what I had givenhim, and long before the amount of money I had given him could haveearned any dividends for me in any form

of an investment, there come, unexpectedly, from a distant relative, a gift inmoney of an amount slightly in excessof what I had given my friend.

After such a demonstration I testedthe law in many ways. I have yet to findthat it ever fails. Whenever I havedared to do an impulsive thing, I havefound myself capable of doing it witha power, with an ability, or with meansand facilities, that seemed to come tomy aid from unusual channels.

Whenever I dare to promise that Iwill do something at a later date, in

stead of being fearful that I may not beable to meet my obligation, I rest peacefully in the fulfillment of the law; andin each and every case at the propitiousmoment, the Cosmic has made it possible for me to meet my obligation, andmeet it efficiently and with honor, dignity, and joy.

Last year, one of my closest friendsand a member of our Order listened tomy discussion of this law and dared tomake reservations for the Rosicruciantrip to Egypt. Before the day for thefinal purchase of the ticket, the abilityto fulfill the promise proved the efficacyof the law again. In another case, amember in our group hesitated to takeher savings and use them for the trip toEgypt, although the longing in her heartto go and the urge to accept this greatopportunity seemed to be the dream of her life: but finally she dared to do thething that seemed to be held back by agroundless fear. Impulsively she unitedwith the party and enjoyed the tour immensely, only to find when she returnedto her home that unexpected conditions

had provided her with funds that amplycompensated for the taking of her lifesavings to purchase the ticket.

I have found, and I think that you willagree with me if you analyze our lives,that fear of the unk nown, and evendoubt of the justice of all Cosmic laws,causes most of us to hesitate in doingthings we are inspired or urged to do,or to wilfully do other things that arecontrary to Cosmic law and principle.

We are taught in sacred scripturethat God loveth a cheerful giver. Itmeans that God loves one who giveswithout hesitancy, without fear, withoutbeing convinced through long arguments, or without a reluctant attitude.

It is merely another way of saying thatthe Cosmic blesses the one who dares to  do. While the one who fears will callour sudden acts impulsive, and claimthat we are not rational or reasonablein yielding to such temptations, the truthof the matter is that the mystic whoknows the laws and is, therefore, prepared to dare to do anything that isright, knows also that all impulses thatare generous in their action, beneficentin their effect, humanitarian in their nature, and constructive in their thoughtare Cosmic inspirations and divine

urges. To these we must yield withouthesitancy, or fail to meet the opportunity through our reasoning, our doubt

ing, and our fearing. The more spontaneous the yielding, the more attunedwith the Cosmic urge our act, the morespeedy will be the Cosmic reaction.Daring to do gives us the power, themeans, the assurance, and the facilities

wherewith to do, and to continue doing.Fear begets its reward fr om i tsel f, andproduces nothing that it did not have,and brings no blessing in its wake, nosatisfaction, no accomplishment, and nocontribution to the working out of Cosmic plans.

Dare to do with all the daring that isin your nature! Y ield to the urges thatcome to you through the voice of thesilent self within, or the voice of thefriend and guide from without. Byknowing the law, dar e to do, and con

tinue daring, if you would reach theheights and know the fulfillment of allthe laws.

Am 1 Human?A LITTLE POINT FOR ALL TO CONSIDER

ECAUSE there is in thestudy of Rosicrucianism aconstant uplift in the mind,soul, and mental outlook onlife, Rosicrucians are sometimes looked upon by thosewho do not understand, asbeing somewhat different

from people about them. Perhaps thestudy is inclined to appeal to only thosewho wish to rebuild within themselves

an understanding of life and life's mysteries, and not to those who seek onlyto rise to fame and power by subduingtheir fellowmen. But this does not fora moment indicate that a true Rosicrucian is not human, in fact, he is the mosthuman of all, because of his clearer understanding of the strong points andweaknesses of his fellow men.

Recently, while in conversation witha brother Rosicrucian, I was deeply im

pressed with the personal philosophythat he has constructed for himself, andbecause it is so human in its structure,I will try to tell you about it just as itwas told to me. We will call this manbrother John, not because that is hisreal name, but because it is so commonand represents so many more peoplethan probably any other name.

“Well,” said brother John, “I try tolook upon my brothers and sisters with

the thought always in mind that withinthem is something much like myself, andif not just like I am now, surely justlike I have been or will be. This givesme an understanding heart, and I amviewing their problems from their viewpoint. When others express their ideason subjects of common interest, I immediately learn to judge the right andwrong from their point of vision as wellas my own. When they tell me of their

troubles, I certainly can sympathize withthem because I have had so many similar troubles, and have been placed in thesamepredi cament s. If they believe theyare victims of fate, I can talk with them

on common ground because I, too, havelabored under this faulty belief in thepast. I f they think they have beenwronged by others, and seek revenge, Ican look upon them with compassion,knowing the torment a revengeful attitude brings to the mind of man, andwhen the heat of anger has somewhatcooled, I can point out with a few softwords the foolishness of seeking to “geteven” by inflicting some injury in return for some real or imagined wrong.And if my brother has been temptedto take that which belongs to others and

has yielded, I also can understand because in the past, I have suffered thepain of a condemning conscience forstealing from others that with which Iwas entrusted. And if my brother hasbeen overcome by the strong emotionsof passionate love, and has committedcertain acts for which after he felt sorrow, my heart goes out to him becauseI have been through the same experiences and know the strength of argument that seems to be used by the animal nature in man and how difficult itis to refrain from answering the call of 

the lower passions.“K nowing these things from actual

experience in times past, builds withinme tolerance for the same things inothers. Not that I seek to uphold them,no, far from it, but understanding themas I do, I can talk with them on themost common ground, loosing my reasoning on a firm foundation of mutualunderstanding and thus seek to helpothers along the Path that I have trod.Not for a moment do I believe I havereached perfection, because I know that

if I had reached that state I would notbe here, and I know that I may evendo again in times of test and trials

some of the things that I say are wrongfor others to do, but I do know that if I strive to assist others that I will buildfor myself a better “code of life” as acriterion for my future actions. I want

to be human, to be fair, to be tolerant,and compassionate, perfecting myself by perfecting ever so little the lives of those about me. And if I am called uponto sink to the very depths, in order toassist a brother or sister, I pray that Iwill be ready to perform this service,knowing that the great God does notalways judge us by our thoughts andactions but by our motive.

“Yes, I crave for Soul power  anddevelopment, and I am enthusiastic inmy desire to reach the goal of perfection, but I want my fellow man to be

with me, to rejoice with me, and sharein God’s blessings, because I am toldthere are plenty of blessings for all of us.

“All this has brought me to a veryimportant point of my story; it is this:Use the knowledge that you receivefrom your Rosicrucian teachings tobuild your philosophy, and build it insuch a way that those about you cansee the practical value of the Rosicrucian teachings, and in doing so, youbring into the Order those who will inturn build their philosophies and thus

an endless chain of practical workersare enlisted in the ranks of those whoare lifting the consciousness of theworld to a higher plane.”

 Thus ended my talk with Brother John, or rather I should say his talk,for I could say nothing. I bid him goodnight and slowly walked to my home,and there and then, I vowed and declared that I would endeavor to buildfor myself a personal philosophy thatwas truly human. And I gave thanksto the Cosmic for having brought meinto contact with a brother who could

help me so much in such a short periodof time. Yes, I gave thanks that he washuman, just as I myself am.

OW many of us realize thepractical truths exemplified

in our daily lives by theRosicrucian teachings?One series of remarkable

facts presents itself to mymind at this time; namely,

the lessons on the science of numbers.For example, let us take one numberand delve into the many combinationsthat result from its use both in naturallaws and in the physical works of man.Let us take number 9, the symbol of acomplete cycle of manifestation, andascertain its relationship to some of thesciences and practical workings we meetin our everyday life. Many of us seeexamples of these things daily, in factevery minute of the day, in our work,our play, or our social activities. Yetwe often fail to see the law, or to comprehend its affiliations; hence, we approach again that old admonition, “Itis our realization of facts and truthsthat count, not the actualities.”

It has been said that the human brainis the most unlimited source of knowledge the world has ever known. Possibly this is due in a large measure to

its fertile imagination, poised kineticallyready to spring into action at a moment’s notice. For instance, many of us, so to speak, fly off the handle anddo or say things we regret, and thatcalmer judgment would have smotheredhad caution and charity been allowedto play their parts.

We learn from mathematics that thefigure 9, resolved into its componentfactors, equals 3 plus 3 plus 3; or 3x3.

 Therefore, 9 is a multiple of 3 and bearsdirect relationship to this number.

Some students are of the opinion that9 is used merely because of ease in calculations. A little thought and comparison will readily convince the trueseeker after knowledge, that such anidea is erroneous. For instance, itwould be far simpler to use even numbers, such as 2, 4, 8, etc., which areperfect squares; but Cosmic law hasordained otherwise through its infinitewisdom.

 The mystical meaning of the number 9 and its relatives has long sinceceased to be a theory and is now anestablished proven truth. Not only toRosicrucians is this true but to manyscientists and workers as well. Perhapsthe promulgation of the Electron Theory has played a cardinal part in theever-increasing fund of knowledge atour command. Caution, care, and prudence must be exercised by the studenttoday, since many schools, text books,and teachers are being led by erroneousbeliefs, some unconsciously, and othersconsciously. For instance, many textbooks today on fundamental electricity

teach that the direction of flow of anelectric current is from positive to negative, while the reverse is true; or inother words the directional flow of anelectric current is from the negativepolarity towards the positive polarity.

Not only do we find that electrictyabounds in threes and nines, butthroughout all the sciences these numbers seem to predominate. For instance, embryology teaches us that the

human embryo goes through three periods of three months each. In the ma jority of plants the stamens, pistils,petals and sepels are arranged inwhorls of three, as one may observe byexamining the flower of the little wildspring trilium, even the name of whichmeans “three.”

In biology we find that many animals go through either three or ninestanges of life, as in the butterfly’s cycles of larva, pupa, moth; and thefrog's metamorphosis of ni ne changes.

In physics we learn of the threestages of matter, called liquid, solid, andgaseous.

We have Newton’s three laws of motion.

 The Archimedean principle of lever

and fulcrum comprises three units. There are three life waves in thephysical world, plant, animal, and human.

Even the zodiac has twelve signs.A large number of fraternal orders

are triangular in composition. One veryold body has thirty-three degrees (3x3equals 9), and the sum of its 18th,Rose Croix degree, equals nine. Ourown beloved Order has a cycle of 108years (1 plus 0 plus 8 equals 9), withits lodges of 144 members (1 plus 4plus 4 equals 9). In the inner cham

bers of many of the ancient templesthere were nine alcoves.Some forms of Christian theology

worship a triune power called Father,Son, and Holy Ghost. The Bibleabounds with references to three andnine. The old Mosaic law demanded,“Six days shalt thou labor.” The Master chose twelve apostles. There werethree wise men who journeyed to Bethlehem.

In astronomical observations andmeasurements triangulation is used to

determine distances from the earth tofixed stars; also surveyors use triangulation in their work.

 The meteorologist observes that ourseasonal changes occur March 31, June21, September 21, and December 21,yearly. (2 plus 1 equals 3.)

 The two highest tides in the worldare known to be off the coasts of Alaskaand Newfoundland, sixty-nine andseventy-two feet high respectively, be

tween ebb tide and flood tide. Thesenumbers are factors of t hree and nine, respectively.

In mechanics the three liewise predominates. For instance, in the steamboiler three methods are employed toconvert the heat units from the combustion chamber to steam; namely, conduction, convection, and radiation.Water itself, when pure, is composedof three parts or atoms whose symbolis H20. In water power the subjectsare divided i nto thr ee classes, hydraulics. hydrostatics, hydrokinetics.

pulse, reaction, and a system involvingboth impulse and reaction. The dinner gongs used in lumber and

construction camps are made of a barof iron bent into the form of a tr iangle. because it has been found that whenthey are in this shape the sound is morepenetrating, and will carry over greatdistances.

Even superstitious people are givento threes and nines, some imaginingthat whenever an accident or death orsickness occurs, there will be three visitations: others believing that the

weather runs in three-day groups; andperhaps there are still a few who holdfaith in that elusive nine-lived cat.

Medical science informs us that agreat many diseases which annoy thehuman race run in three stages. Brokenbones, as a rule, usually begin to kniton the ninth day. There are nine functionary organs of the human body.

Rapid transportation on railroadshas been made possible only by meansof the automatic air brakes, whose primary field of action is the plain triplevalve, and the quick acting triple valve.

Our alphabet is composed of twenty-seven letters, which number is divisibleby nine: as also is the Chinese alphabetof 405 characters.

 The Morse telegraph code, universally used on land lines, has a total of 81 electrical impulses. Six of the lettersare represented by space characters,while fifteen are combinations of dotsand dashes. Since there are 27 charac

In mathematics the value of all thedigits used, that is 1,2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

9, equals 45, which in turn equals 9when added. It is believed by manythat figures never give a false result.However, 9 lends itself to disprove thatassertion, as follows: Subtract the figure 123.456,789 from 987.654,321. Theanswer is 864,197,532. The horizontalsum of each of these three numbers is45 or 9. Hence, 9 subtracted from 9leaves 9.

Another noticeable peculiarity is thefact that the sum of any three numberstaken in their natural sequence, eitherascending or descending, will equal 9or its factors. Thus, 1, 2, 3, equals 6:2, 3, 4, equals 9; 3, 4, 5, equals 12,equals 3; 4, 5, 6. equals 15, equals 6;5, 6, 7, equals 18, equals 9; 6, 7, 8,equals 21,equals 3; 7, 8, 9,equals 24,equals 6. This same ruleholds true forsix consecutive numbers added together, as: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, equals 21, equals3: 2, 3, 4, 5. 6, 7, equals 27, equals 9;3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, equals 33, equals 6;4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, equals 39, equals 12,equals 3.

may be observed by using all the digitsonly once, arranging them in threegroups and three columns as follows:

Regardless of which way we addthese figures, they will resolve into thesame factor, horizontally, vertically, oracrostically. They all equal 15, or 6;but the same figure is not duplicated inone operation, and yet the entire scaleof digits is used.

 To ascertain the area of a circle whenthe diameter or radius is known, we usethe factor .7854 (7 plus 8 plus 5 plus 4,equals 24; 2 plus 4 equals 6, a multipleof 3). To find the circumference of acircle of known diameter we use the factor 3.1416 (3 plus 1 plus 4 plus 1 plus

6 equals 15; 1 plus 5 equals 6, also amultiple of 3).

A unit called the light-year is usedby astronomers to state the vast distances between stars in the heavens.

 This unit of length is based upon the

distance a beam of light would travel,in one year, at the terrific speed of 186,000 in a second. The unit expressedin miles is 5,869,881,000,000, whosehorizontal sum is 45 or 9.

It takes 365.25 days for the earth tocomplete its cycle around the sun. Thesum of these numbers, horizontally, is21; and 2 plus 1 equals 3. These daysresolve themselves into 8,766 hours, amultiple of 9; or 525,975 minutes, amultiple of 3; or 31,558,500 seconds, amultiple of 9. Considering the speed of light it takes 522 seconds for a ray of 

light to traverse the intervening space,a multiple of 9. This equals approximately 9 minutes, or to be accurate 8.7minutes, which is a factor of 3.

All our time compediums are factors or multiples of nine; for examples,60 seconds, 60 minutes, and 24 hours.

 There can be no doubt as to theworkings and appointments of this greattriangular law. It would be improbableif not impossible for all these examplespointed out to be mere coincidences.One could go on listing them indefinitely, and there would still remainhundreds of similar lessons which havenot been enumerated.

 Thus we see and learn and realizethe important part the mystic 9 playsin many of our manifestations, as wellas in those of the Cosmos: and againand again we see microcosm and macrocosm in evidence, the infinite planduplicated as a finite plan. And so,while we work and worship and seek,we may be permitted to turn over therocky pages of the earths’ crust, andread thereon, indelibly engraved by

the hand of time, the manifestations of the Law of the Triangle. Then andthen only can we begin to realize thestupendous, marvelous, all-embracingwisdom, light and power, love and justice of the sublime Cosmic Consciousness.

The Mystery of a Master THE WONDERFUL STORY OF A BEAUTIFUL SOUL

UST a few months morethan 410 years ago, therepassed from this earthly lifeinto the spiritual body of the Great White Brotherhood one of the most highlyevolved master mystics of who had attained his early

training in the mystic sciences in oneof the secret schools of the RosicrucianBrotherhood. For several centuries, themystery of his life and the secret of hisgreat knowledge remained unrevealedto the public and rested safely in thearchives of our Order. But finally theinevitable translation and decipheringof his strange manuscripts were madepublic, and the thing that he had leftin the hands of his trusted co-workerin the Brotherhood during the lasthours of his early life came to light inthe time and manner prearranged and

the world became acquainted with another demonstration of a duality of character that is an outward exampleof inherited and acquired development.

 This great man was none other thanthe world-famous Leonardo da Vinci,the Florentine painter, usually knownby two of his celebrated masterpieces.

 The Last Supper, which resides safelyin a monastery in Milan, Italy, and theportrait known as Mona Lisa, which isnow exhibited in the Louvre in Paris.Da Vinci was born in 1452 at Vinci,a Tuscan mountain town, and was

claimed to be the illegitimate son of aFlorentine notary and a peasant woman. Because of his father's great wealth,he was given an excellent education inFlorence, which was at that time theintellectual and artistic center of Italy.In his youth he was extraordinarily impressive, handsome in appearance, powerful in physique, and a very fine conversationalist. He apparently carriedover from a previous incarnation a ten

dency toward the fine arts, for early inhis youth he manifested a natural ability to express the dreams of his souland consciousness in music and wasknown as one of the most marvelousimprovisers of the musical circles of thecity. On the other hand, at odd timeshe manifested the ability to sketch andto express his thoughts in quick anddeft strokes of pencil or crayon. Butthere was also born in him to be a companion to his genius an insatiable desire for extraordinary knowledge, orthat knowledge which was then considered arcane and secret. It was saidof him that whenever he went to alibrary or the reading and referenceroom of an academy to seek facts pertaining to one of the academic subjectshe was pursuing, he was always temptedby same casual subject in some forgottenbook that required further research or

more extended investigation. In yielding to the temptation to pursue the arcane subjects to their fullest revelation,he often neglected the subjects whichwere a part of his curriculum. Longbefore he thought seriously of developing his natural artistic talents, he wasdeeply involved in the subject of natural sciences and especially in naturaland spiritual laws.

After the development of his artistictalents, Da Vinci became extraordinarily busy in painting and sculpturing, although his paintings became far more

famous than anything he ever workedin clay. Many times he was commissioned by king and court, by churchand state, to produce certain marvelouspaintings, which for spiritual significance have never been equaled, and because of the wide range of his work inpainting and the great amount of itwhich he accomplished, very few persons knew that Da Vinci was interestedin anything else than his art. But to

him there was another art as great asthat which he had carried over from thepast, and it was not long before hisCosmic inclination in this directionbrought him in contact with the art of the Rosicrucians, and then began the

dual career of his life, which makes himan outstanding character in mysticalliterature. His first contact with theRosicrucians was in Florence at aboutthe time he was completing his academicstudies. A few years later he made anumber of journeys to a monastery believed to be situated in what is nowknown as Amalfi, and there he came incontact with one of the secret schoolsof the Rosicrucian mystics. At anyrate, at about this time, he became initiated into their arts and mysteries, andwas gradually prepared to be proficient

in the use of their manuscripts and theirlaboratories, and here began his experiments, which he recorded in manuscripts now known to be the astonishingsecret writings of a great master.

In an appreciation of Da Vinci written in German by the student of Philosophy, Houston Stewart Chamber-lain, we read this: “No greater painterever lived; and this great painter waslike Durer, and even more than Durer,a preeminent mathematician and mechanician. At the same time—as we see

every day more clearly—a man of anall-embracing intellect, a Seer who penetrated all that his eyes saw, a Discoverer so inexhaustible that the world hasperhaps never seen his like, a deep, bold

 Thinker.’’ The manuscripts, which Da Vinci

placed in the hands of his Rosicruciancompanion just before he died andwhich were dated to be revealed to theworld at a certain time and under certain conditions, were first believed tobe of little value when examined at theprophesied time because of their peculiar character. Da Vinci’s connectionwith the Rosicrucian mystics had neverbeen publicly revealed, and his reputation centered almost exclusively aroundhis mastership in art. It was knownthat he had been a prolific writer andthat some of his manuscripts had been“lost,” but it was generally believedthat if found, these manuscripts wouldprove to be profound dissertations on

the subject of art. When the manuscripts were finally presented by unknown hands to the various scientificbodies for examination, it was still believed that the many si tuat i ons of peculiar writing contained matter that

would be of interest only to artists andfor this reason very little was done todecipher the secret writing and thestrange script and bring the contents of the matter before the learned societiesof the day. In keeping with the Rosicrucian methods of his time. Da Vincihad written all of his manuscripts withscript characters, which constituted amore or less secret alphabet and writtenin a unique and secret manner. Thegeneral impression of the manuscriptswhen examined by those who did notknow the manner in which to read them

was that the writing was done by writing with the left hand, the charactersbeing backhanded and the script reading from right to left. This presentedan almost indecipherable manuscriptand was in no way encouraging to persons who believed that any effort totranslate them would result in nothingmore than an artist’s dissertation onart. But as one eminent biographer hassaid of him: “Leonardo was the mostextraordinary vestal genius of that ageof geniuses, the Renaissance. As a man

of science he towered above all contemporaries. and had his views beenknown and generally published, theymust have revolutionized the science of his day.” The writer of that commentdid not know, of course, that what DaVinci wrote in his manuscripts wasknown to others besides Da Vinci, andthat much of the k nowl edge had been  purposely held secret so that too greata revolution in the lives of mankindwould not occur. Many great mindstoday do not realize that the masters inthe Rosicrucian Brotherhood and in the

Great White Lodge are in possessionof knowledge which, if publicly revealed. would unquestionably cause astonishing and regrettable revolutions inthe lives of mankind. Such knowledgeis in the possession of the few advancedthinkers and workers in each period of civilization that they may properlyguide and protect it and bring its gradual adoption by civilization so that no

sudden revolution or startling changein our general affairs may work to ourdetriment rather than to our progress.

 This same biographer also states thatDa Vinci divined the secrets of nature

and made discoveries which it has beenreserved for our own time to perfect.And in this the biographer is correct.For much that was revealed in the DaVinci manuscripts hundreds of yearslater was just opportune and propitiousfor the state and stage of man’s development. And even now, four hundredor more years after his transition, manyof the things which Da Vinci revealedin his manuscripts would be consideredfar in advance of our general publicknowledge and might even be questioned as being entirely too futuristic.

It would take a whole issue of thismagazine to outline the remarkable revelations which were contained in DaVinci’s manuscripts. We must remindyou again of the date of his transition,which was in the year 1519. In theyears in which most of his manuscriptswere written, the earth was still considered as flat and only a few of the profound leaders in secret schools held anyother opinion regarding the shape of theearth or of the general cosmogony of theuniverse. We are accustomed to think

that Columbus and a few of his immediate predecessors promulgated the firstideas of the earth being a sphere, butI would call your attention to the factthat old mystical records show that aRosicrucian character, who taught logicand dietetics in the mystical school conducted by Charlemagne in Toulouse,France, in the tenth century, had in hisprivate study and sanctum a sphere suspended from the ceiling on the surfaceof which he had marked the continentsof the earth, as they were pictured inmaps claimed to have been found onthe walls of the mystic schools of Egypt, and this old master, Alcuin,taught the idea of a cellular cosmogonyand that the fact that the earth was asphere. Da Vinci’s manuscripts weredated thirty years before Copernicuspresented his questionable hypothesisof cosmogony in which he made thestartling announcement that the earthwas round. Da Vinci made the samestatement and many others in regard to

the sun, the moon, and the planets. Onone of his manuscripts we find theheading in large, bold characters reading in Latin “il sole non si muove” (thesun does not move). To those who may

say that this very statement shows thatDa Vinci was in error in some of hisscientific statements, we would simplysay that it is best to hold judgment on  this point until all evidence has beensubmitted, for there are eminent scientists of the present hour who are notquite convinced that the Copernicanidea of the movement of the sun is correct, and there are many other eminentscientists who are quite ready to agreewith what Da Vinci said centuries ago.We do not intend to argue this pointhere at this time, but some day. most of 

our readers will be better able to judgeof the correctness of the two ideas, andthen there will be time to consider thecorrectness of Da Vinci's statements.Many of his other statements in regardto astronomical laws have been provedabsolutely correct.

Da Vinci was also well aware of thefact that the blood in the human bodycirculated continuously, for in his manuscripts he repeats in a number of placesthat he knows that the blood “runs anuninterrupted course through the veins”

and that it proceeds from the heart andfinds it way back to the heart, andmakes a distinction between the venousblood and the arterial blood. We mustkeep in mind that science has popularlycredited the scientist, Harvey, with thediscovery that the blood circulatesthrough veins and arteries in the human body. H arvey announced  thissupposed discovery to his close companions and workers in 1619, but didnot announce his discovery to the worlduntil 1628. This we note is at least onehundred years after the transition of Da Vinci. We may easily understandwhy Da Vinci wished this fact withmany others to be kept secret for ahundred years or more, by noting whatoccurred when Harvey finally made theannouncement of his “discovery”; hewas condemned as a dangerous character, considered insane, and his wholeannouncement rejected, and for manyyears, the science of medicine and surgery was thrown into a revolutionary

rstate. If the announcement had comea hundred years sooner, it would havebeen completely rejected and lost, andthere would have been far more direconsequences. It must be kept in mindthat Harvey was likewise a Rosicrucian

student, and a worker with many othersin a Rosicrucian laboratory, and hadaccess to the Rosicrucian records of DaVinci’s discoveries.

Da Vinci’s manuscripts, many of which are not yet fully circulated andare carefully preserved waiting theproper time for public publication, contain many astounding scientific facts,which are now secretly known only tothe higher workers in the Brotherhood.

 Those facts from his manuscripts,which were published centuries ago.deal with not only cosmogony and

physiology, but with astounding observations in meteorology, the moon’s influence upon the tides, the manner inwhich to figure the elevation of continents, the laws and principles pertaining to fossil shells, and so forth. It wasDa Vinci who originated the scienceof hydraulics and  invented the hydrometer. His plans for the canalizationof rivers is one of the modern schemesof great value in irrigation. He inventeda large number of labor-saving devicesand machines, many of which are remarkable for his period and time, andas a mathematician he takes a very highrank. Can you imagine anything more  peculiar than a famous artist originat

ing the science of hydraulics and inventing pieces of machinery and scientific instruments such as the hydrometer? In keeping with the old arcaneschools and their systems of study andwriting, Da Vinci adhered to the mys

tic principle that “in the beginning Godgeometrized.” Therefore, all of DaVinci’s manuscripts are filled with geometrical designs for symbols and everylaw and principle is worked out inmathematical symbols and laws. Weknow that in the early days, mathematics belonged almost exclusively tothe arcane sciences and to the adoptionof philosophy to the practical sciences.It was quite common for the Rosicrucian mystics in ancient times, as today,to express all of the natural and spiritual laws with geometrical symbols and

mathematical notations. This is whyDa Vinci wrote across the top of oneof his most important manuscripts thesesignificant words: “Let no man read mewho is not a mathematician.’’ In otherwords. Da Vinci was saying in a forcible exclamation, let no one attempt toread and understand my writings whois not a mystical geometrizer.

N SOME sacred writings weare admonished to make surethat the inside of the cup isis clean, and I often wonderwhether all of our membersrealize the value of the cultural devel opment and

cleansing process that takes place within us as we progress along the Rosicrucian Path. It was John Wesley, thegreat religious reformer, who said that

cleanliness was next to Godliness, andhe only expressed an idea promulgatedby Jesus and advocated for many centuries by the mystics of the Orient. Infact, the ritual of baptism had its originin the fact that unless we are cleanphysically, we cannot approach the holyaltar with any real degree of purenessand worthiness. It was presumed in theancient days that the seekers for spiritual light and spiritual redemption wereattempting to purge and purify themselves inwardly, but many of these neglected to cleanse the outside of the cup.

 Today, we find the very reverse as true. Too much attention is being given tocleansing the outside of the cup andneglecting the inside.

I realize now after five years deepwork with our Order that it is properand fitting that our appeal to seekersshould include the assurance that thework of the organzation and its teachings will help to make them healthy,prosperous, happy, and successful inlife. I realize that in helping the averageman and woman to rise higher and

higher in the physical, financial, andsocial places of this life that the Rosicrucian Order is doing an invaluablework and demonstrating not only thepractical principles of Christianity butthe practical principles of all ancientmysticism. But again I say I find thatthe tendency is too often to judge thevalue of theAMORC teachings by theeffect they have on the outside of thecup, rather than the effect that is taking place on the inside.

After all, man is merely a vessel. Asa vessel he is made of clay like allvessels that are common and useful.

 That vessel may be ornate or plain. Itsoutward appearance may be elaborate,beautiful, attractive, and quite ornamental, but after all, the usefulness of any practical vessel lies in what it willhold and what it will give forth, andpart of this value depends upon thewholesomeness and cleanliness of the

inside of the vessel. Even in the matterof health, which may be roughly judgedto be a condition solely of the outer self,man depends upon the cleanliness onthe inside rather than the cleanliness onthe outside, except in extraordinary conditions. Unless the outer part of thebody is extremely neglected in the matter of cleanliness, a wholesome interiorwith the right cultural, psychic, andmental development will act as a preventative against disease and ill healthin the physical body. Certain it is themore spiritual, beautiful, and Cosmically

attuned the interior is, the more happy,healthy, and peaceful will be the outerself.

I have just said that in too manyinstances our members are prone to

 judge the value of the Rosicrucian principles and teachings by the effect theyhave on the outer self, and the worldlyaffairs of that outer self. It may be excused and explained as a weakness of human nature, and we may console ourselves with the thought that our outerselves are after all extremely important.

But the fact remains that the teachingsof AMORC accomplish a great dealmore for us than can be measured immediately by the changes in our outerlife. I know from the experience of agreat many that the  changes whichcome about within us through theAMORC contact and the AMORCprinciples eventually bring manifestations in our outer lives far more significant and of far greater profit to us

than the little outward helps that areforced in the early stages of our association with AMORC. When I speak of forced help, I refer to the many demands that our members make to Headquarters or to the various advancedmembers in each lodge for aid in theirpersonal, worldly problems. As a typical example, we will consider thebrother who joins the AMORC organization principally for the Light andknowledge that he will gain regardinglife's problems, and the help he will gainin building a greater character and better personality in this life. He starts intothe studies with enthusiasm and is really happy and contented because of newknowledge he is gaining, when suddenly he comes face to face with somematerial problem. He may find himself 

in a different location, or in some financial situation requiring a larger incomeor he may come face to face with someemergency, debts that are critical in hisperiod of life. He looks to the AMORCorganization to help him, through itsteachings and principles, and expectsthat the knowledge he has gained inthe few months' study with AMORCshould enable him to overcome all of these obstacles and permit him to riseabove them or meet them in some mysterious way. After trying for two orthree weeks to use what little knowl

edge he has gained from AMORC, hefinds he is not accomplishing the outermanifestation he expected and in hisdisappointment, he appeals to Headquarters or to the officers of his lodgethrough the Welfare Department forsome material help. He does not askfor money, because this cannot be rightfully expected from an organization thatis not a mutual benefit society or not incorporated as a loan bureau, but he doesexpect some unusual application of mystical laws on the part of those who maybe masters of them, directed towardhis particular welfare so that his problems will be overcome. The officersrealize that they are bound to renderwhatever assistance they can in thename of the ideals of the organization,and in the name of human brotherhood,and they thereby force certain conditions for this troubled brother, and helphim in certain ways to meet the conditions that have arisen. This sort of 

help so pleases the brother that he immediately judges the value of hisAMORC membership by such service.Very often it is apt to create a wrongimpression in his mind and to tend tomake him believe that he need not always depend upon himself, and that hecan always find help through the Welfare Department. If this sort of reasoning is carried too far, it is apt to makeany member believe that the study of the lessons and lectures, and the application of the principles are not necessary, and that so long as one is merelya member in good standing of the Order, there are those who will take careof all the personal problems and assumethe responsibility of working them out.

 This sort of attitude would soon defeatitself, inasmuch as the member would

find that his rapidly decreasing interestin the teachings and his consequentstopping of the development within himthat had been started by the AMORCcontact were bringing about new problems in his life, which he could notmeet and which were almost impossiblefor the officers of the organization tomeet. In other words, it is a fact and alaw of nature that as a member losesinterest in the teachings and in the application of the teachings in his ownpersonal life, he weakens the possibilityof the principles doing anything for him

in any emergency and in any circumstances. It is also a fact that in proportion to the interest which any memberhas in the teachings and in proportionto the enthusiasm with which a membertries to live the principles of the organization, to that same degree or proportion will the Order, through its principles be able to help the member in meeting any of the trials of life.

Furthermore, the peculiar psychic andmystical development that goes on within a member, who is carefully studying

and applying the teachings, is of such asubtle nature and of such a uniquequality, that the average member is unaware of what is taking place until certain emergency conditions, trials, ortribulations call for the application anduse of some principle, some faculty,some power from within the being thathas not been used before. For this reason, a devout, sincere, loyal student of

our teachings may go on for weeks,months, or a year or more studying andapplying the principles, rejoicing in theknowledge that is gained, finding happiness in the peace of mind and contentment that comes into the life, but

absolutely unaware of any real effectupon the psychic self or the outer self.Such a member may not notice that hishealth is very greatly improved, or hemay not notice that his social affairsare taking a turn for the better, or thathis finances or business interests are alittle more settled and running a littlemore smoothly, and he may feel thatthere is nothing of a very definite naturegoing on except in an intellectual sense.But then suddenly and in an unexpectedsituation, there comes an opportunity to

apply or test, or use some principle thatwas tucked away in the consciousnessand almost forgott en. In the application of this principle, the member findsthat he is a master over a certain situation or condition, and he mentallyscores up one credit mark for theAMORC teachings. The difficulty withsuch members is to convince them thataccompanying their intellectual comprehension of the work, there actually isa cultural development, a psychic evolution going on within the being thatdoes not necessarily manifest itself out

wardly in the ordinary things of life. This development and evolution that istaking place is a cleansing of the insideof the cup. It is slowly wiping awayfalse beliefs and superstitions. It issurely and definitely broadening thehorizon of knowledge. It is positivelyattuning the inner self with the Cosmicforces and bringing an influx of morevitality and more of the divine consciousness than was possessed before.It is toning and tuning the system in itsnervous and mental functioning. It isawakening certain dormant facultiesthat, like the faculty of language or of music or art, do not manifest themselvesas being awakened until they are applied or tested. And more definitelythan all of this, the development goingon within the sincere student is preparing him for a further prevention of newKarma and new obstacles and trials inthe future.

It is a fact that the average studentwho has been working with AMORC

teachings and principles for five years ormore discovers now that in these presentyears he has less of the unexpected conditions arising in his life, which he created in the past and which he now hasto face in a serious way. In reviewing

the situation, he finds that for the pastfour or five years with the new knowledge, new understanding he has, he hasnot unconsciously or consciously donethose things that would create Karmafor him and bring up those unexpectedtroubles that most of us have to facefrom time to time. In this way, he realizes just what AMORC has really beendoing for him, and he sees that the workof AMORC is not so much a workof the present as it is of the present andthe future combined.

 Therefore, I say the important thingfor all Rosicrucians to keep in mind isthe cleansing of the insi de of the cup. 

 Try to find in each paragraph of theteachings a new thought that will supplant an old thought that you had; anew idea that will take the place of anerroneous idea you had; a new principlethat will blot out and occupy the dominance of an old and wrong principle. Ineach paragraph, you will also find awider viewpoint of life and of nature’slaws. You will discover new truths thatwere unknown to you and useful tools

in the way of ideas that can be appliedsometime in your life to help you if notin a financial way, at least in a socialand intellectual way. In this way, youare rubbing the inside of the cup andcleansing it of its tarnish, of its aggregation of untruths and errors. You arebrightening the inside of the cup withthe shi ni ng, brilliant, illuminatingthoughts that will make it wholesome,attractive, appealing, and useful. Thisis just as essential as cleansing the outside of the body of its scars, of its deadtissues, of its soiled spots, and bruises.

In closing, I want to say as one whohas studied for over thirty years inseveral of the most popular and advanced theological and mystical universities and schools of the world, I havefound more in AMORC to cleanse theinside of the cup and make the wholevessel more useful, more practical in itsmission in life than I have found in anyother system or philosophy. Therefore,I speak these words hoping to encour

HE great advances made bypsychical research workershave battered down the

walls of prejudice held byexact science until it iseager, today, to studypsychical phenomena withan open mind. It is realiz

ing that it is only fair and proper tostudy all phenomena, regardless of theirnatures, with a tolerant and broad viewpoint in the interest of truth. Whencertain things happen unfailingly, regardless of their nature, science should,and now does, consider this to be asufficient reason to examine into thesephenomena, to compare, analyze and  

summarize them into theories whichmay possibly explain them. If true,such theories become laws of nature,and they will fit perfectly into the Cosmic scheme which abides forever andwhich rules everything with law andorder. This uniformity and order constitutes the foundation stone of ALLscience; the unchanging character of the laws of nature is acknowledged universally because it has been proved bythe vast amount of evidence gainedthrough human experience.

Centuries ago. renowned teachers

claimed that nature had its psychicaland physical domains. Science limitedits studies to the latter realm, and naturally it achieved results which wereonly a partial representation of thewhole truth. Because science is nowmore willing to listen to what these ancient teachers had to say, I am submitting seven of their great teachings with

the purpose of clarifying and substantiating many of the ideas held by science today.

EV ERYTH ING L I VES 

 The first great  Jaw of the ancientsages to be enumerated was that thereis nothing dead in the Cosmos, for latent life is slumbering in the moleculesof so-called inertia, even though it isnot cognizable in our finite senses. Allmatter is living; the tiniest particles arelives. ALL IS LI FE.

We know nowadays that there is atremendous internal activity in everypiece of so-called dead matter due to

the quivering or vibrations of itsmolecules. When we analyze thesemolecules into atoms, we find their protons are constantly repelling and attracting their electrons, yet never in alleternity, do they touch each other. Isthis not a display of L ife and intelligence? Going higher in the scale of nature ,we next see chemicals displaying “affinities.” and minerals displayingdistinctive differences (so that the mineralogist speaks of mineral SPECIES).And we can carry this life-cycle in anunbroken chain that links the “life" in

the atom with the “life” in man. Science affirms this truth in its well-knowndictum, “no force without matter, nomatter without force”; and it confirmsit absolutely by rearing its entire structure upon the Law of the Conservationof Energy and Matter.

 The test of this life inherent in allmatter, science will agree, is response to

stimulus. Applying this test to the deadest of all dead matter, so-called, we caneasily prove that heat vibrations willcause the component atoms to respondby an increased activity and movement.Surely, this I S a response.

So everything lives and is conscious.Of course, not all life and consciousness are similar to those of human oreven animal beings, for there is a gradation in this as in all of nature's works.Life is one form of existence manifesting in matter; it is only through a vehicle of matter that life can express itself, otherwise there would be nothingto perceive its effects.

BEH IN D THE L IFE IS THE F ORM 

 Just as matter is indestructible andexternal, so must its Life be externaltoo. Therefore, there can be no suchthing as death. What we have beencalling death is simply a transition fromone state of Life to another phase of the same external force.

All living things must change theirform continually under the remorselesslaws of evolution. There is a constantbecoming, a ceaseless yearning for ahigher grade of life. The form constitutes the vehicle for the life-energies,

and the two are necessary to each other.By themselves, each is but a mere abstraction. Life needs its opposite matter in order to leave the realms of theabstract and to manifest itself as thevitalizing energy which thrills everyatom in the world. Both are, in theirorigin, the two facets or aspects of theone and the same thing; they are inseparable. The form may be of the rarestmaterials, but still it is there and it iscomposed of matter. Then it may beso dense that it hides the indwelling

life, and we are only conscious of theform. Still we know that life is therebecause anything that is capable of transformation cannot be dead.

 The energy stored within a mass isemployed in holding together the formof that mass; it is active in the stresses,chemical affinities and electrical chargesof its component atoms and they areanalysable into actual movements. SirChunder Bose gave us screen picturesof animate and inanimate objects show

ing them to be pulsating with life. Whenwe destroy the form, we convert theenergy from one phase to another whileit redistributes itself into the new configurations made by the electrons in

this mass. The energy remains unchanged in quantity for it can never bedestroyed.

Matter and force are two oppositesor extremes of the same thing; and theyare ordained by our next natural lawto attract each other so effectively andwonderfully as to assure harmony andbalance to the entire universe.

EX TREME S ME ET 

All manifestation rests upon thispithy proverb. The harmonious ap

proaches and the gradual blending of the two opposite extremes that comprise everything in existence, characterize all the workings in nature.

Everywhere we find a positive forevery negative, and the one without theother becomes a physical impossibility.

 This duality of opposites manifests under various guises as good and evil, hotand cold, rest and motion, Life and material form.

 Throughout nature, we see the Law

of Duality repeated everywhere.Between any two extremes, there

must be an intervening third factorwhich sharply defines them, and a balance is usually struck at some midwaypoint to create the harmony which isthe ruling note in all nature. This balance partakes of the nature of the twoopposites and is a result of their meeting. “Extremes must meet,” is a universal law; each opposite must seek itscomplimentary fellow and mingle withit in order to perfect its own being. Itis absolutely necessary that they do meetin order that there be any progress inany matter. This marriage or union issymbolized by Father, Mother, and Sonin all of the great religions.

One of the most wonderful thingsthat can come under our observation isthe fact that nature allows this unionof opposites to take place in a remarkable series of seven gradations in whichthe fourth is the balance.

N A TURE GEOMETR I ZES 

 The evolutionary  force proceedscyclically and septenially. Nature neverworks simultaneously nor does it makesudden leaps or starts. There is a grad

ual and a harmonious blending of theseven principles which bridge the gulf that stretches  between the objective  and subjective extremes of worlds aswell as atoms. It is one of the Keys towhich the Universe is tuned.

For example, what we sense as a rayof white light can be comprehendedwithin a range of seven radical colors. There is not a sudden jump from thered to the violet, but a graduated seriesin accordance with a stern and inexorable law. There is a gradual blending

of colors which is so uniform, so wonderful that it transcends the human lac  ulties. The same “sevening" holds goodfor sound, and it will be found to betrue of everything. This septenaryclassification has all the requisites necessary for a scientific classification.

 Yet this is not all, for this is but thebeginning of a greater scale of seventimes seven. Each note in the musicalscale is septenary, so that the wholegamut of sounds is forty-nine.

Plato, Pythagoras, and other ancientteachers claimed that this numericalharmony is accompanied by exact,geometrical forms. That nature geome-trizes universally can be easily demonstrated by a simple experiment usingequally magnetized needles, in corkfloating upon water. In this simple experiment we can see how nature employs a variety of arrangements of thecomponent electrons. After the conditions of the experiment are satisfied,three needles arrange themselves in theform of a triangle; four needles into thesquare, and five into a pentagon. Six

needles produce a very interesting phenomenon, in which one goes to the center, while the other five arrange themselves in a pentagon as before. Sevenneedles cause a still more interestingphenomenon, for one goes to the centerwhile the other six arrange themselvesin a circle.

We can proceed by adding needleafter needle to obtain many interesting

changes. These are the stable arrangements which may help us to study theatom, and elaborate experiments madein this way have verified the arrangements suggested by purely mathematicalcalculations.

V I BRA TORY H A RMONY 

We see that nature works graduallywith mathematical exactitude, yet not asingle phenomenon could occur in nature, unless there was an attunementbetween the life-energy and its physicalvehicle. The vehicle must be attunedto the proper degree of fineness to beable to receive such vibrations. When  every atom of such a vehicle has itselectrons vibrating harmoniously withits protons, these atoms have becomebalanced (electrically neutral) so thatvibratory harmony implies that this balance has been established.

 The law of vibratory harmony dominates all nature. Life itself will befound in its last analysis to be the result of harmonious vibrations.

Familiar examples may be cited.When the strings of two pianos aretuned exactly alike, a chord struck onthe one will cause a correspondingchord to be sounded on the other.Iodid of nitrogen has been exploded bya certain vibration from the “G" stringof a bass viol. A wine glass can beshattered by the sounding of its pitchnote upon the violin; and Caruso didthe same thing using his wonderfulvoice. Wireless telegraphy is operatedupon the same principle of sympatheticvibration, and is only possible when thesets are in resonance.

Marconi has shown us how a tubeof iron filings mounted on a tall polecan receive messages from the ends of the earth, copying the vibrations towhich it has been attuned. And the

human being possesses within himself the power to respond to the whole  gamut of vibrations, known to Rosicru-cians as the Cosmic Key Board of V ibrations; his brain can be attuned toestablish communication with otherswhenever this vibratory harmony is obtained. Furthermore, mesmerism provesthat man can communicate his life-forces to other human beings who are

psychically attuned to receive these lifevibrations.

L A W OF PROPORT ION 

 This sixth universal law of groupingand apportionment transcends all othernatural laws. The law of energy agreement has been expressed by vibratoryharmony; agreement in material composition can be expressed by the term“chemical equilibrium” or balanced inmaterial proportion.

When the material proportions areexactly those necessary to give expression to a certain rate of vibration of any energy, we obtain the manifestation. Even the highest form of energy,

the life-energy, has its “life-atoms”conforming to this same principle of grouping, as governs the electrons onthe physical plane. So that the natureof every molecule is determined by thepolarities, the number and the arrangement of the electrons which compose it.

Like states of consciousness producelike physical effects always and everywhere. By varying the proportion andrelations of the electrons, we obtain variations in the form with resultant dif

ferences in the rate of vibration. The atom of one chemical “element”differs from that of another in the number of its electrons, and the resultingconfiguration with its characteristic rateof vibrations. All qualities and attributes of any material thing result fromthis rate. Each element can be thoughtof as being built up from the element just below it in weight number by theaddition of one electron and one positive charge on the nucleus; with eachaddition, there is a changed grouping

within each element that explains notonly this element’s form, but also itsfunctions and qualities.

 The oils of lemon, orange, clove, andturpentine are alike in their chemicalcomposition; their wide differences inbehavior is due to the internal groupings of the component electrons. Mercury exists in six different forms (isotopes) due to six different groupings of its component electrons, and we canconstruct two barometers of chemically

identical mercury which differ greatly intheir behavior, giving readings whichvary by one-half of a millimeter. Theisotopes of chlorine and mercury makepossible the existence of eighteen dif

ferent mercuric chlorides which cannotbe differentiated by chemical tests, butvary due to the different arrangementsof the electrons, If they were absolutely identical in arrangement, therewould not be eighteen different forms.

Everything from atom to man iswhat is by reason of its composition,vibrating at its own characteristic rate. The addition or subtraction of a fewmolecules in a grouping of a few elements is sufficient to determine a different species.

Nature is a genuine alchemist. Itslaw of proportion ordains that the evolutionary force called Life precedes theform and builds it up while it evolvesfrom one vehicle to a higher one; andthis rearranging takes place accordingto mathematical and geometric accuracywith vibratory and proportional harmony.

L A W OF ANA LOGY  

When the ancients said “as above,so below,” they meant that we can

 judge the infinitesmally great by theinfinitesmally small, for the law of Analogy rules supreme through the Cosmos. The truest atom is analogous tothe solar system ;the embryonic processof human birth can serve as a patternfor the birth of worlds and solar systems. Nature’s methods are uniform,and what holds true in one phenomenawill be found to be identically analogousto all.

 The atom has its electro-positive center (proton) in constant attraction with

its negative electrons; this picture truthfully reflects what is going on in oursolar system with its central sun and itsplanets. It can serve likewise as a guidefor all inorganic creation. The spherical nucleated red blood cell is a miniature which can serve as a model for allorganic nature, just as the hen's eggcan be studied to reveal kindred problems in the human organism. For theLaw of Analogy holds good for all of nature’s creatures and creations, show

ring no preferences or prejudices. Nowonder the ancients chose the egg orthe circle as one of their most reveredsymbols of organic nature, while theyemployed the triangle as the symbol of material manifestation. Their knowl

edge was based on scientific fact; theirstudies embraced not merely the physical part of nature, including man, butthe psychical as well. To them, thephysical was the illusionary and the

psychical was the real part. TheyNEVER eliminated the psychical factor in any of their calculations. Exactscience, particularly medical science,will make no mistake in following theirexample in all future studies of naturalphenomena.

 THE RO SI CRU CI A N ORDE R The Rosicrucian Order, having existed in all civilized lands for many centuries, is a non-

sectarian, fraternal body of men and women devoted to the investigation, study, and practicalapplication of natural and spiritual laws.
