The Ron Weasley Blanket By Jackie Wierzbicki (Penguineer) This pattern outlines how to replicate as many of the squares of Ron’s knitted blanket as can be seen in various photos of the blanket. Screen captures from the Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire and the Order of the Phoenix, as well as pictures taken of the blanket on display in the Harry Potter exhibit were used to construct this pattern. The coloring of each square is a best guess, as the lighting differs from photo to photo and makes some of the colors difficult to discern. Photos are included at the end of the pattern, as well as reference pictures with each square pointed out with the instructions to make it. All squares are in garter stitch and are 7 x 7 inches. To determine how many stitches to cast on, knit a swatch and determine the gauge. If you are planning on using different kinds of yarns, this step will be important so that all your squares turn out the same size. When you have determined the gauge for each type of yarn, fill in the blanks on the pattern with the number of stitches to cast on. Once you cast on the appropriate number of stitches, continue in garter stitch until the work measures 7 inches by 7 inches. Bind off. Diagonal squares are a little more complicated and exact instructions are included. Leave a long tail at each end of the squares for attaching the pieces later. Remember: Casting on or pulling too tightly when you bind off will decrease the width of the square at the edges! Basic Patterns: Solid square pattern: Cast on the appropriate number of stitches so the work measures 7 inches in width and continue in garter stitch until it is also 7 inches in length. Patterns for individual solid squares are listed below. Stripe patterns: Cast on the same way you would for a solid square. Switch colors at appropriate intervals. Patterns for individual striped squares are listed below. Diagonal patterns: Cast on 2 stitches. These are also worked in garter stitch. Increase 1, knit to the end of row Increase 1, knit to the end of row Increase 1, knit to the end of row Continue until the work measures 7 inches in length and 7 inches in width. Then switch to decreasing. Decrease 1, knit to the end of row Decrease 1, knit to the end of row Decrease 1, knit to the end of row Bind off when 2 stitches remain (Decreasing edge may stretch longer than 7 inches, decrease at the beginning and end of each row in this case to keep these edges 7 inches) Patterns for individual diagonal squares are listed below.

Decrease 1, knit to the end of row Decrease 1, knit to the end of row Decrease 1, knit to the end of row Bind off when 2 stitches remain (Decreasing edge may stretch longer than 7 inches, decrease at the beginning and end

of each row in this case to keep these edges 7 inches) Patterns for individual diagonal squares are listed below.

Putting it all together: Assemble the squares in the appropriate order. The squares are oriented so that the ridge rows are perpendicular to the square next to, above and below it (diagonal squares being the exception). Using the tails at the corners of the squares, tie the corners together in the appropriate orientation. If no tail is available, use a small piece of yarn to hold the corners together temporarily. This allows you to keep the edges lined up so they line up well when sewn together. If you have left long tails, you can use these to sew the two blocks together with a running stitch. If not use a yarn that matches one of the squares you are sewing together. Use a yarn needle to seam all 80 squares together. Weave in loose ends as you go.

Border: Once the blanket squares have all been attached together, the last step is to edge the blanket with black yarn. Some photos of the blanket suggest the edging is all black, while others show at least one edge (the outer edge of the J row) in white. I suggest using a thinner yarn for this part (Caron Simply Soft Eco – Black or White). You will need a crochet hook. I used size F, but anything near this will do. Using the edging yarn, create a slip knot. Select where you would like to begin on any side of the blanket. Stay away from the corners of the blanket as this stitch is slightly more complicated and best worked once you’ve got your edging started. Insert the crochet hook into the blanket from front to back 1 cm from the edge. Pick up the loop of your slip knot and draw it through the blanket. Using the hook pull the string from behind the work through the loop of the slip knot to complete the slip stitch. Chain one. Continue to do a single crochet, inserting the hook front to back 0.5 inches between stitches. Grab the string from behind and draw it back through the blanket and through the 2 two loops on your hook. Chain one. Repeat around the edge of the blanket. At corners you will do 3 stitches to transition around the angle. When you are 1 cm away from the end of the blanket continue to do one single crochet on the side you have just completed. Place your hook through the same hole and repeat, making sure your edge lies over the corner of the square. Place one more stitch through this same hole, this time orienting the crocheted stitch over the side you are about to begin trimming. This will created a nice turn around the corner. Proceed as before, single crocheting down the edge, and using 3 stitches to turn each corner. When your blanket is completely bordered, weave in the loose ends. I recommend starting/ending on a dark colored square such as A6 as the ends of the border yarn is more easily hidden.

Notes about the Pattern: A note about the accuracy of this pattern: Three corners of the blanket could be visualized well between all the photos I have gathered of the blanket. There was, however, one section that was difficult to see. The top left corner of the blanket in the following diagram is my best guess and contains some squares that I could make out but may not be in the correct arrangement. There are also squares that I made up to fill in blanks. These have no reference picture and were made to use up my left over yarns, feel free replicate them or make up substitutes with your own old yarns. Remember this Blanket was made by Mrs. Weasley and if your blanket isn’t exact or perfect, it’s just a little more authentic! Many have speculated that this blanket was made from left over yarn she had so you should follow her lead and use this project as an opportunity to use up all the old remnants of yarn you have, even if it means deviating from this pattern a bit! Happy Knitting!
