September 18, 2017—Week #5
CARNIVAL TONIGHT!!
LEARNING HAPPENS HERE
It does! If you don’t believe, just come watch. We’re al-
ways busy. We learn in every part of our day—even when
we’re outside playing a game together. Last week we
learned about visualizing while reading and realized how
differently we all picture things. We learned that a sentence
needs a subject and a predicate. I chose that lesson because
I’m seeing a lot of sentences in our class’s writing that are
incomplete. Here’s an example:
“Hearing the sound of leaves rustling.”
Hmmm. Do you see what I mean? Now compare it to this:
“Hearing the sound of leaves rustling calms me when I’m
falling asleep at night.”
Now the sentence has a subject and predicate.
Well, I didn’t mean to get so caught on that one thing when
we learned SO much more. Here are some things the kids
can talk about:
—A day in the life of a boy serf (peasant).
—-How to conserve water.
—The meaning of retreat
—How to add 100,000 to 345,610 without even writing the
problem down.
—Why to read the sidebars when reading an informational
article.
—Why honesty and policing yourself makes playing games
outside go so much better.
Again. Not enough room. Oh how I love learning and
LOVE these kids. ALL of them. We’re having so much
fun! (Please note that in the last 6 sentences, three of them
didn’t have subjects and predicates. All I can say is that you
can do that after you get really good.)))))
P.S. I can’t come to the carnival. I planned my neighbor-
hood social at my house tonight! I’m so sorry; I love to see
everyone there usually. . .
