A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ONTHE SUNDAY READINGS

Epiphany of the Lord January 3, 2021

“After Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem of Judea during thereign of King Herod, astrologers from the east ar-rived one day in Jerusalem inquiring: ‘Where is thenewborn king of the Jews? We observed his star atits rising and have come to do him homage.’... theywere overjoyed at seeing the star, and on enteringthe house, found the child with Mary, his mother.” The visitors were looking for Jesus. They broughtgifts portraying His role as priest, prophet and king. They depended on a star to lead them to their Sav-ior. The Magi event is so familiar, found in scripture, filled with traditions. Their search ended with agreat discovery and blessing. In the gospels thequestion is asked, ‘what are you looking for?’ or‘who is it that you seek?’ We are like the wise men, looking for the Lord.Where can we find Him? Right here, right now. Je-sus makes Himself known to us, if we bring the giftof ourselves, if we wish to pay Him homage. It re-quires humility, honesty and sincerity as we recog-nize Him as savior of all humankind.

Thank you for your support!

Epiphany Chalk for blessing your home is nowavailable near the entrance of both churches.

Please take one along with a copy of the Epiphanyprayer as you leave Mass.

The feast of the Epiphany celebrates the many ways that Christ has made Himself known to theworld, mainly the three events that manifested the mission and divinity of Christ: the visit of theMagi (Matthew 2:1-12), the baptism of Jesus (Mark 1:9-11), and the miracle at Cana (John 2:1-11).

The star appeared to the Magi... Its extraordinary brightnessattracting their gaze awakens their attention to an inwardgrace of illumination which enlightens their souls. This graceprepared them to recognize the prerogatives of the OneWhose birth the star announced; it inspired them to set out toseek Him so that they may offer Him their homage. TheMagi's fidelity to the inspiration of grace is wonderful. Doubt takes no hold upon their minds. They immediatelybegin to carry out their design. Neither the indifference northe skepticism of those who surround them, nor thedisappearance of the star, nor the difficulties they faced, northe length and dangers of the way stop them. They obey thedivine call without delay or hesitation. In this the Magi are our models, whether it concerns thevocation to the faith, or whether it be a question of the call toperfection. There is indeed for every faithful soul a vocation toholiness: "Be holy because I am holy".
