Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

Offertory Hymn: Away In A Manger

Holy

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven

and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten

Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;

through him all things were made. for us men

and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

All Bow.

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate

of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,

he suffered death and was buried, and rose again

on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated

at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead

and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.

I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins

and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen

Prayer for On Mission for the Church Alive!

Father of Mercy, as we journey

On Mission for the Church Alive! endow us with

our Lord, with help of our dear Blessed Mother,

under the mantle of her love. Amen.

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

December 29, 2019

Rise, take the child

and his mother, flee to

Egypt, and stay there

until I tell you.

450 miles or

725 kilometers.

That’s the distance on modern roads from Bethlehem

to Cairo. Assuming one covered 24 miles or 40km a

day on foot ambitious for two young parents and

their infant son the journey would take well over

two weeks. Of course, the Holy Family didn’t have

modern roads. They would travel through

wilderness, fear bandits, run low on water, and cross

the vast Sinai Peninsula in a reverse of their

forefathers in Exodus. Here, in struggle and sacrifice,

are the beginnings of the forging of the Holy Family.

Joseph rose and took the child and his mother

by night and departed for Egypt. He stayed there

until the death of Herod. Large Jewish

communities existed in most major cities of the

ancient Mediterranean world, after the collapse of

their kingdoms chronicled in the Old Testament, and

Joseph could likely find work as a carpenter. All the

same, today’s Gospel reminds us that the first

formational years of Jesus as a babeinarms were

spent in a strange land. The members of the Holy

Family were foreigners, outsiders, immigrants.

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

God took on our humanity. He is in solidarity with

our own trials and difficulties. On the feast of the

Holy Family, we honor the special place of the

family within society. We are invited, too, to recall

those families who share in the struggles of the Holy

Family in a particular way. We pray for immigrants,

asylum seekers, and refugees. We pray for all parents

who sacrifice their own wellbeing and comfort so

their children may have a better life. LPi

The Feast of the Holy Family

It seems appropriate that we

celebrate the Holy Family of

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph during

the Christmas season, just after

families have gathered for

Christmas, frequently with stress

over giftgiving, travel drama, and

the intricacies of meal preparation

for people with their various dietary needs and

preferences. Today’s readings ask us to put family

and life in their sacred and holy perspective. When

we take care of aging parents we care for Christ, who

is with all and in all. When we approach one another

with compassion, kindness, gentleness, and patience,

we communicate Christ’s love. Even when the Lord

leads in ways we cannot quite appreciate or

understand, we must follow God’s will, knowing that

in doing so, we cooperate with God’s grace in our

midst. Every family is called to be a holy family.

Your Holy Family

Families come in all shapes

and sizes. When asked to

describe your family, you

might begin by telling people

about a parent, sibling, or extended family members.

You might even describe what you have learned

from a genealogical study. You are unlikely,

however, no matter how wonderful your family may

be, to describe your family as holy. And yet, this is

our primary call. Each of us as people of God, and

each of our families, is called to be holy. We are

called to live as God’s people in the world, to

communicate God’s love and presence through the

way that we live together and in relationship with

others. Every family, no matter what their

circumstances, is called to be a holy family. Even

Mary, Joseph, and Jesus faced challenges and trials.

And yet they rose to the occasion, listened to and

followed God’s will, and were assured of the love of

the Lord through it all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Listen To Your Angel

Have you ever found yourself at a

crossroads?

One direction may be momentarily

advantageous or easy, another more

challenging but right or good. It is not

always easy to know which direction

to choose. Discerning our path of life

necessarily involves prayer, the guidance of others

whom we trust, and the promptings of the Holy Spirit

within us. The example of the Holy Family is that

they followed the will of God, trusting in God’s

abiding presence even when they knew that doing so

involved risk and uncertainty.

Mary trusted the voice of the angel, although the

message was beyond comprehension;

Joseph listened to the voice of the Lord in dreams

and proceeded, assured of God’s guiding spirit in

the midst of troubling circumstances.

This is what our families must do as well.

Being Christian people in today’s world is not

always easy, even when we know it is right.

This is the meaning of holiness.

This is what it means to be a holy family.

Salvation In Daily Life

This Sunday is the feast of the Ho-

ly Family, which comes on the first

Sunday after Christmas Day. To-

day’s feast celebrates how the hu-

manity of Jesus (including his entire

family life) has brought saving significance into the

daily rhythms of our human family life.

The scriptures offer instruction and encourage-

ment on how to sharewithin our families, parish

families, and the wider human familythe love that

God shares with us in Jesus. Selections from Sirach,

Psalm 128, and Colossians encourage us to reflect

divine love and thus find holiness in all our human

relationships. The reading from Matthew’s Gospel

offers a living example of love in the actions Joseph

took to protect his young family from danger and to

nurture them within the larger family of faith of

their time. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Marriage Moments by Susan Vogt

This year is almost over. Of course this is an

arbitrary division of time, but let it serve your love

by thinking of the top way your beloved served you

this past year. Write it down. Put it under each

other’s pillow tonight. (If one forgetsforgive. Give

another chance.)

Parenting Pointers by Susan Vogt

December 29 is the Feast of the Holy Family.

What does it mean to be a Holy Family? Who in our

family shows heartfelt compassion, kindness,

humility, gentleness, patience, forgiving one

another, thankfulness… (Col 3:1213). Perhaps close

with a group hug for above all is Love.

Over all other virtues put on love,

that is, the bond of perfection.

Sunday, Dec 29; Holy Family

Sir 3:26, 1214; Col 3:1221; Mt 2:1315, 1923

A change in plansDreamers can’t explain

themselves. People ask: How could you? Why did

you? And dreamers shrug and smile. They make the

sacrifice, they take the risk, they think differently,

they become someone unimaginable. Ask any artist

or composer, star athlete or entrepreneur, priest or

monk or missionary: How did you become what you

are? They shrug and smile, because it’s hard to tell

someone who hasn’t heard the voice themselves: I

talk to angels, I listen to the universe, I close my eyes

so I can see more clearly. Sit and pay attention to the

holy silence. Rise, take the child and his mother,

flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you.

Monday, Dec 30; Octave of Christmas

1 John 2:1217; Luke 2:3640

Generation to generationThe gospel anticipates

the New Year with a child’s potential. After

Simeon’s harsh prediction of a sword piercing

Mary’s soul, Anna comforts. She directs the

conversation back to thanking God. She has had time

to prepare for her moment, so when it comes, she

rises to the occasion. Pope Francis linked Anna and

Simeon to grandparents. In a society that too often

dismisses the elderly, grandparents still offer time

and presence, just what children need most. Pray for

and honor the elders in your own family and

community. They carry a consoling message! The

child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom.

Tuesday, Dec 31; Sylvester I, pope

1 John 2:1821; John 1:118

Guard the pearl of great priceWe know little of

Sylvester I other than that his papacy lasted from 314

until his death in 335. A legend arose around the

eighth century, however, based on a forged

document known as the Donation of Constantine,

that the emperor who famously converted to

Christianity also transferred authority over Rome and

the entire Western Roman Empire to Sylvester and

future popes. While the document was later proven

to be a fake, the papacy nonetheless got ensnared in

power politics, luxury, and the corruption that comes

with trying to rule an empire. As Dante put it in his

Divine Comedy, Ah Constantine, how much evil

was born not from your conversion, but from that

donation that the first wealthy pope received from

you! Don’t practice your faith for worldly gain

God grants us riches money can’t buy. He was in the

world . . . but the world did not know him.

Wednesday, Jan 01; Mary the Mother of God

Numbers 6:2227; Galatians 4:47; Luke 2:1621

Incarnation in allThe Octave of Christmas

reminds us that all people everywhere share in the

mystery of Incarnation, the communion of divinity

and humanity, revealed in Jesus Christ and realized

in all who are likewise born of women. We celebrate

this mystery whenever we gather to eat and drink the

sacred meal. Our task is to recognize the divine

presence in the least of those with whom we share

this mystical communion, from the baby born in

Bethlehem to the migrant standing at our wall.

Resolve this New Year to lend a helping hand. So

they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph,

and the infant lying in the manger.

Thursday, Jan 02, Basil the Great

& Gregory Nazianzaen, bishops

1 John 2:2228; John 1:1928

Let’s be friendsTo the Ancients, friendship

seemed the happiest and most fully human of all

loves; the crown of life and the school of virtue.

The modern world, in comparison, ignores it.

When C.S. Lewis referred to the Ancients he might

have had today’s saints, Basil and Gregory

Nazianzen, in mind. Instrumental in the formation of

the Nicene Creed that the church recites each

Sunday, these great bishops and doctors of the

church can also be remembered simply for being two

great and lasting friends. Let them remind us that

deep and warm friendships enrich life in ways that

accomplishments and honorifics, and even creeds,

sublime as they may be, cannot replace. All who

heard it were amazed by what had been told them

by the shepherds.

Friday, Jan 03; Most Holy Name of Jesus

1 John 2:293:6; John 1:2934

Called by nameThe memorial of the Most Holy

Name of Jesus reminds us of the power of names.

We honor not just the person Jesus, but the name of

Jesus. There is a certain intimacy in knowing a

person’s name. Think of our litanies, our prayers for

people who are sick or who have died. Think of the

genealogy we heard on Christmas Eve. When we

name people, we acknowledge and see them. Think

of the people you see regularly in your school,

workplace, gym, grocery store, faith community.

Remember to call them by name. John the Baptist

saw Jesus coming toward him and said, Behold,

the Lamb of God.

You are called into one body.

Bear with one another; forgive one another;

let Christ’s peace control you.

Saturday, Jan 04; Elizabeth Ann Seton, religious

1 John 3:710; John 1:3542

Be a trailblazerElizabeth Ann Seton (17741821)

was born into a wealthy Episcopalian family. At 19,

she married William Magee Seton with whom she

had five children. For a brief time, it was a

wonderful life, but soon William’s business and

health failed. Elizabeth was a poor widow and single

mother by the age of 30. Inspired by Catholic friends

who helped care for her dying husband, Elizabeth

became Catholic in 1805. In the following years this

first Americanborn saint established many firsts: the

first religious community of women and the first

Catholic school, with several more to follow.

Elizabeth Ann Seton’s deep faithfulness reminds us

that nothing is impossible with God. They said to

him, Rabbi (which means Teacher), where do you

stay? Come and see, he answered.
