the role of indiana’s department of insurance
TRANSCRIPT
The Indiana Department of Insurance (IDOI) regulates the various insurance products and services that Indiana residents use. In addition to providing consumers with information regarding submitting claims and understanding the insurance system, the IDOI oversees insurance providers to ensure that they are financially stable and capable of providing the services they advertise and sell.
While the IDOI does not have the authority to pass laws regarding the use or distribution of insurance, it does issue rules and proposals for rules that insurance providers must follow. Companies that fail to follow rules may be reprimanded or challenged legally by the IDOI.
In addition to outlining requirements for offering insurance in Indiana, the IDOI provides a number of resources and services for residents. One such resource is a “rate watch” database that enables Indiana residents to review information about recent activity on the part of their health care insurance providers. Additionally, the IDOI employs staff members who specialize in various areas of insurance, including bail bonds, medical malpractice, and office operations.
James “Jim” Holden served from 2005 to
2006 as Chief of Investigations in
Indiana’s Department of Insurance.
During his tenure in that position, he
supervised the state’s enforcement
division and led five investigations.
