Slide 2: PURPOSE OF SLIDE: INTRODUCE MISSION WITH PROGRAMS The Kavli Foundation supports its mission through two sets of programs. The first is our science programs, shown in the red circles, which includes Kavli Institutes, Kavli Meetings, the NAS Kavli Frontiers of Science Program, the Kavli Royal Society Centre, Scientific Society Programs, and Kavli Pilot programs. [[Speaker can elaborate on each program here if desired.]]

Slide 3: PURPOSE OF SLIDE: INTRODUCE CONCEPT Each new initiative that we pursue capitalizes on strengths of many of these programs. To provide an example of one of our endeavors: the BRAIN Initiative really started with the CONCEPT of the Brain Activity Map, but how did it ultimately develop into the BRAIN Initiative?

Slide 4: PURPOSE OF SLIDE: INITIAL IMPLEMENTATION In Sept 2011, scientists, many of which are members of our nanoscience and neuroscience institutes, gathered at the Kavli Royal Society Centre outside London to participate in meetings that stimulated the Brain Activity Map Project. BAM proved critical to the scientific thinking behind the BRAIN Initiative and was a major catalyst in its launching

Slide 5: PURPOSE OF SLIDE: CONTINUED IMPLEMENTATION Many subsequent meetings were convened by The Kavli Foundation through its active meetings program, including one one at the Society for Neuroscience meeting, which the Kavli Foundation provides support for. Outcomes of these meetings included a Neuron and Science paper on the Brain Activity Map

Slide 6: PURPOSE OF SLIDE: OUTCOME The BRAIN Initiative was announced by President Obama in April 2013, We can now observe the many outcomes of the BRAIN Initiative, including its role in: (1) cross disciplinary research, particularly drawing in physical scientists, to pursue projects in neuroscience (2) increasing understanding of the brain through new tool development (3) advancing societal goals to improve health, made possible by an acceleration in tool development and novel findings stemming

Partnering with Scientific Societies to Promote Interdisciplinary Meetings and Public Outreach

The Kavli Foundation seeks to• Catalyze emergent fields• Support cross-disciplinary discussion –

find gaps and opportunities

Slide 8: PURPOSE OF SLIDE: FOUNDATION’S INTEREST IN PARTNERING WITH SCIENTIFIC SOCIETIES The BRAIN Initiative example illustrates how we engage the strengths of our multiple programs catalyze new initiatives. Focusing more deeply now on our programs with Scientific Societies, the Foundation seeks to work with societies to: 1. Nucleate communities around emergent fields [[Button press to show red circles of MRS image]]– Such as our support for the Materials Research Society, where physics, chemistry, engineering are united in the study of new materials 2. [[Button press to show conference image]] And support specific cross-disciplinary discussions, like the Allied Genetics conference convened by the Genetics Society of America, brining together geneticists from an array of different model systems
