Each State Party shall take appropriatemeasures, within its means and in accordancewith fundamental principles of its domestic law,
to promote the active participation of individualsand groups outside the public sector, such as civilsociety, non-governmental organizations andcommunity-based organizations, in theprevention of and the fight against corruption

Ratification of the UNCAC
In March 2006, the Transparency and AccountabilityNetwork, along with other CSOs decided to push for theratification of the UNCAC by the Philippine Senate.
Senators Edgardo Angara and Miriam Santiago wereidentified as champions.
By 06 November 2006, the Senate ratified the UNCAC.

CSO Coalition from the beginning.
TAN sits on the Coordination Committee of the UNCACCSO Coalition, the representative of East and Central
Asia and the Pacific.

Closing thoughts
Fighting corruption cannot be successful without theparticipation and inclusion of a country’s citizens.
This is especially true of weak states, or in countries
where corruption is rampant.
The UNCAC, if fully implemented, can provide the
necessary legal framework to make significant progressagainst corruption.
