Camper's CornerThomas Leclerc attended Lau-Ren's Tadpole camp twice. His mom has worked and volunteered at camp for years. He especially liked the pirate and super hero themes and Thomas is coming back in 2017. Favourite camp memories include the Rock, counsellors, the beach, singing The Moose song, camp pancakes, canoeing, the tire swing and the people. One lesson he learned is "Don't put your elbows on the table." It's the best place Thomas has been to but, he says, "If you go in late summer, pack a sheet and a sleeping bag and an extra blanket 'cause it gets colder at night."
Camper Numbers Soar 26% in 2016 2016 was the best summer ever at Camp Lau-Ren! This year, 460 campers passed through the
gates on Lau-Ren Road, an increase of 94 campers over the 366 who attended in 2015. Why the huge increase? Over the past five years, efforts have been made to promote Camp Lau-Ren.
Such initiatives have included colour registration forms, a new colour pamphlet, information sent to schools, social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram), a new website, online registration, the annual Open House, radio ads and more. Ultimately what keeps new and returning campers coming to Lau-Ren is a wonderful experience at camp provided by dedicated camp directors, leaders, summer staff and counsellors. It's the stories of fun, friendship, climbing the Rock, campfires, swimming and crafts that are passed on to family and friends that keep campers
coming to Camp Lau-Ren for the summer experience of a lifetime.

Memories From Around The Rock By former camp cook Stephani Hodgins (a.k.a. Vanilla)
I loved Sunday night supper, the first meal of camp. Cinnamon, Peaches, and I, (Vanilla) would introduce
ourselves to the new campers and go over the jumper rules. We used to try to make it fun and add some humour into it. We would always stress the importance of closing
all the cupboards after the dishes were put away. We would talk about the chipmunk who liked to make an
appearance in the dining hall. Living in nature we tended to see God's creatures grace us. During one meal in particular, the chipmunk made its appearance during
announcements. The screams and screeches of the kids were priceless. Camp Lau-Ren has made a huge impact
on my life, attending as a camper, then as a cook and then as a volunteer health care provider. In another 6
years I'll be sending my daughter there! Share your camp memory of how you got your camp
nickname with The Rock. Send your nickname story to; Bruce Patterson at [email protected].
A Tribute to Len Norlock 1932-2016 (a.k.a. Owl) by Renton Patterson Survived by his wife, Lila, and three children, Len Norlock died of cancer on November 2, 2016. It was Lila who first introduced Len to Camp Lau-Ren in 1976, and the next summer he served as a counsellor and nature study leader at the Junior Boys Camp. Len joined the Lau-Ren Board in 1977 and served as chair from 1978-80. From 1981-87 he became the Camp Co-ordinator but accepted no salary, having insisted that the salary amount be deposited in the Capital Improvement Fund. From 1987-2004 he served as Co-ordinator with Lila as his assistant. Len was very
interested in improving the camp facilities and saw that there was constant improvement such as steel roofs on cabins, washroom renovations, construction of new cabins etc. Once you got to know Len, his serious outward appearance melted to reveal a good sense of humour. Yes, he could smile and laugh. No camper deed escaped Len's attention, he soon became known as "Owl", the all-knowing one. Dedicated to the core, Len led camp renovations with others and on his own. Even after retiring as Co-ordinator, he could be found renovating the Forrest Motel. His last project was the installation of commemorative plaques in camp buildings. Len and Lila made their mark on many young souls. Camp Lau-Ren has thus been privileged to have Norlock Chapel so named to remember their contribution. Len definitely left this world a better place and the Camp Lau-Ren community mourns his loss.
