The Lions Club of Rochedale Springwood - celebrating 47years of continuous service to those in the community who are in need of our help. WELCOME: We extend a special welcome to those who are single, married, divorced, filthy rich, dirt poor, yo no hablo inglés. We extend a special welcome to those who are skinny as a rail or could afford to lose a few kilos. We welcome you if you can sing like Andrea Bocelli or like our Bulletin Editor who can't carry a note in a bucket. You're welcome here if you're "just browsing," just woke up or just arrived in Australia. We extend a special welcome to those who are over 60 but not grown up yet, and to teenagers who are growing up too fast. We welcome soccer mums, NASCAR dads, starving artists, tree-huggers, latte-sippers, vegetarians, junk-food eaters. We welcome you if you're having problems or you're down in the dumps, we've been there too. If you work too hard, don't work, can't spell, or because grandma is in town and wanted to go to a Lions Club Meeting. We welcome those who are inked, pierced or both. We welcome tourists, seekers and doubters, guest speakers...and you!



Trevor’s Comments for April 2019 It is Easter, time to put on a few kilos and to spoil the grandkids – fill them with sugary treats and then return them to their parents. (Payback is great isn’t it?) Let’s take stock of what we are doing as a Club, remembering that we are there to help others, not forgetting each other when the need arises. As Lions we help make our suburb, our country and the world a better place. Our small contribution does make a difference. Sometimes all it takes is a kind word or companionship to lift someone’s spirits. We are in an organisation that does create great outcomes and I am proud to say that I am a Lion and that I have you as part of my family. Thank you all and let’s not forget how really great we are. PUSH FORWARD and keep being FABULOUS. Our dinner meeting is at the Meadowbrook Golf Club on the 9th April as usual. Congratulations to all those who nominated for the Board or Project Chairmanships.

YOUTH OF THE YEAR : State Final Sat. 6th April (Hosted by Q1) National Final (at MD Convention Geelong 4-6 May) The State Final will be held on 6 April at the Newnham Hotel, 516 Newnham Rd Upper Mt Gravatt $39pp Springwood Mall has been booked for the Christmas wrapping again this year from Monday 16th to Tuesday 24th December. A booking has also been made there for the Christmas Trailer raffle from 17th to 22nd December with the draw taking place on that last date. 2019 Daffodil Day: We have agreed to support this project as we have done over several years. We are applying to set up at the Underwood Shopping Centre 22 – 24 August. Australia Day Citizenship ceremony: We have already booked the hall again for Australia Day 2020. 26 January 2020 Address: 10 Laurel St, Woodridge QLD 4114 Because Aust. Day falls on a Sunday, we may have to hold this event in the afternoon (after Church Service in the Hall) We have been invited to assist the Eight Mile Plains State Primary School with their 150th Anniversary Celebrations. We have agreed to provide workers at their BBQ Stall. Saturday 24th August. We have worked providing funds for the Lions Medical Research Foundation from its beginning. In appreciation for this support, we have been invited on Sunday 7 April to a presentation at the Translational Research Institute from researchers (past and present) and representatives from the Diamantina Institute. Important Information: Anzac Day, 25 April, commemorates the brave but ultimately failed battle that was fought in 1915 by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps—the Anzacs—and other allied troops on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. The eight-month campaign which began on 25 April resulted in the deaths of an estimated 8,700 Australians, who were either killed in action or died of wounds or diseases. Some of Australia’s most enduring values emerged from this experience: the Anzac ethos of courage, spirit and ‘mateship’. Anzac Day has been set aside in

memory of those who fought for Australia and those who lost their lives in other wars and conflicts. The day is a national public holiday and is commemorated with ceremonies, the laying of wreaths, and military parades in all Australian cities and most country towns. Wearing a poppy is a way of remembering those who gave their lives. The motto of Anzac Day is "Lest we forget" whilst that of Remembrance Day is "Keep the Faith".

The ANZI Forum for 2019 will be held in Jakarta 5-8 September 2019. A great opportunity for Lions from Australia, PNG, Indonesia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands to come together as a region to learn about Lions, build networks, make friends and engage with international leadership.

Lions Operation Friendship: Lion Greg will be representing our District (201Q1) in Denmark this year 13 April – 23 May. Greg has been asked to be a guest speaker at the Lions Convention in Denmark.

Wouldn’t it be great if we had access to an EFTPOS Machine at our various fund raising activities? Lions Chris & David are currently investigating the possibility of such a facility for us.

Polocrosse World Cup 2019 22 April - 28 April See the world’s best battle it out at the 2019 Polocrosse World Cup in Warwick, Queensland. Combining the strategy of netball, the toughness of rugby, and the ball skills of lacrosse, polocrosse is an Australian-made sport where action, power, skill and pace dominate. Celebrating 80 years in 2019, the Polocrosse World Cup will bring players from eight countries – Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, USA, UK, Ireland, Zambia and Zimbabwe – to southern Queensland to see which team reigns supreme.! Polocrosse is king of the one-horse sports. Be there in 2019 to live the action!

Lions Family Club of Mt Cotton Branch A club branch enables a small group of people to form a Lions club and start making a difference in their community sooner. Branch members are part of an existing “parent” club, but hold independent meetings and select their own projects and activities.

As the weather is so unpredictable we have been meeting at the Redlands Golf Club, starting with a cup of coffee. Our meetings are informal, relaxing and very friendly. Our next meeting falls on the Easter break so we have decided to bring it forward to Sunday 14 April at the usual 2pm.

Our Dog’s Breakfast fundraiser has moved to 2 June as the previous date is now the next Cabinet meeting and we are busy collecting donations for our ‘ Show bags.’ A small group worked for Clean Up Australia Day, held a free sausage sizzle and set up a table to Lions Awareness day. We now have a Story Dog, sponsored by us at the Mt Cotton Primary School. Thank you to Nikita and Don we now have a formal Club letterhead. Camp Duckadang has their next Working Bee on 26-27 April which we will attend. Members have worked 117 volunteer hours over the last month Sandra and Ann have been helping the Cancer Council, Redlands Hospital and Mater Hospital with knitted clothing and toys. Sandra and Adrian help Meal on Wheels. We all collect can tabs, used stamps and Rose collects reading glasses. Ann has volunteered 35 hours at Curiocity as part of Brisbane Science week. PDG Ann Reed President Lions Family Club of Mt Cotton Branch Clean Up Australia Day is the Nation’s largest community-based environmental event. The idea was born after Australian builder and solo yachtsman Ian Kiernan AO competed in the BOC Challenge solo around-the-world yacht race in his yacht Spirit of Sydney. Shocked by the pollution and rubbish he encountered during his nine months at sea, he was inspired to organise a community event on his return to Sydney – Clean Up Sydney Harbour (8 January 1989) More than 40,000 volunteers lent a hand, making it a resounding success. The event ignited an enthusiasm and desire among the community to make a difference to their local environment, so much so that Ian wholeheartedly believed the whole nation could be inspired to make a difference. In 1990 the first Clean Up Australia was launched. In 1993 the movement went global, with support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Now, 40 million people in 120 countries are involved in Clean Up the World. Not bad for an “average Aussie bloke”!

At this Dinner Meeting the Board of Directors for 2019-2020 will be installed. All officers are required to attend monthly Board Meetings regularly, and special Board Meetings as called from time to time.

These members ensure that our club is active, efficient, and acts within the bounds of our constitution. They must also ensure that all members act within the limits of the law and terms of our insurance policies

The decisions made by a Board must be considered in the light of many factors and therefore must be taken seriously. It is important that all board members become familiar with the everyday running and administration of our club to fulfil their obligations as board members.

15 minutes Medium Serves 4

• Butter 60g 1 cup Rolled Oats • 1 cup desiccated coconut 1 tablespoon golden syrup • 1 teaspoon bi-carb of soda 2 tablespoons boiling water • 1 cup plain flour 1 cup sugar

1. 1. Mix rolled oats, coconut, plain flour and sugar in a bowl. 2. 2. Separately, melt butter and golden syrup in a saucepan over low heat. Add bi-carb of 3. soda mixed with boiling water. 4. 3. Pour wet mix onto dry ingredients and mix thoroughly to a moist but firm consistency. 5. 4. Spoon biscuit size teaspoons of the mix onto a greased baking tray, flattening as you do. 6. 5. Bake biscuits in oven for 20 minutes on medium heat for 20 minutes or until brown.

7. Remove from oven to cool, ready to eat. The Anzac biscuit is a sweet biscuit, popular in Australia and New Zealand, made using rolled oats, flour, sugar, butter, golden syrup, baking soda, boiling water, and desiccated coconut. Anzac biscuits have long been associated with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps established in World War I. The biscuits were sent by wives and women's groups to soldiers abroad because the ingredients do not spoil easily and the biscuits kept well during naval transportation.
