February 2016
From the Principal ….
February 2016
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As we culminate this first semester, we commemorate Diversity for the month of February. We will focus on celebrating the inner strengths that each of us brings and that produces a Uniqueness that makes our world interesting and balanced.
Radnor Middle School never sleeps. Its halls are filled every day with some activity or event that makes us the School with the Heart in Wayne. We have been busy with our seventh grade winter concert and look forward to the upcoming sixth grade winter concert. We’re well into our winter sports’ season and the PTO International Week will be successful. The Geography Bee was a close competition, but one of our seventh graders won to the finish for the second year in a row. Our After School Clubs provide a nice variety of activity, fun and learning for our students and the PTO and REF committees continue to offer grant opportunities to our teachers that serve and benefit the needs and interests of our students.
Academically, we continue the practice of providing assessments across the disciplines, challenging students to look at their own learning, and enabling teachers to examine the data as a result of their own teaching. Many meetings and discussions are occurring to ensure that Radnor Middle School remains number one with its emphasis on academic achievement and growth. Our staff ensures that this level of rigor and relevance takes place within our heralded walls. We are proud to have received yet another distinguished award, Schools To Watch designation.
We welcome Mr. Ryan Buterbaugh, our new assistant principal, to our professional family. We are looking forward to tightening our administrative team. Things have been busy and it has even been challenging. Most of all, it has been satisfying in ways that fill our hearts through the smiles of a child. It is sometimes difficult for educators to express just how grateful we feel when we realize the opportunity to watch and share in the growth of our children. We are excited to see what Mr. Buterbaugh will bring to our community and feel fortunate to have this new addition to our community. Every member of our staff from custodial, support, cafeteria, tech staff, paras and teachers alike - we share a common purpose and that is the care of your children - a role we take great pride in participating in.
The second semester is one that promises to be equally gratifying, I wish to extend to all of you love that abounds and solidifies a grounded and common purpose. This month may you and your families create those quiet moments together as we learn to appreciate the diversity in each of us and use it for a conduit for helping others as they too find the value in themselves.
Please accept my deepest appreciation for all you do to support and enrich Radnor Middle School.
Sincerely,
Esther M. Purnell

Student Council News
Radnor Middle School's Martin Luther King Day of Service took place on Monday, January 18th. Student and adult volunteers came together to participate in meaningful activities which focused on giving back to our community. Students also participated at off-site locations, including Wayne Nursing Home where they shared their many talents.
Here at RMS students assembled bags and boxes of shoes and clothing for Cradles to Crayons. They made over 100 bags of toiletries collected and organized for Hugs for Heroes, over 100 bedside activity kits to cheer up young patients at CHOP, valentines to encourage our US troops, and many cards for the home bound and delivered to Aid for Friends with cheery messages to brighten their day.
With the help of our FaCS teachers, students were able to bake 16 dozen cookies for the Life Center in Upper Darby, and sew pillowcases for Ryan's Case for Smiles. Students also enjoyed making over 250 sandwiches which were delivered to the Life Center in Upper Darby. Students were engaged this year in a new activity, creating goat collars and leads for the goat herd at our sister school in Uganda! RMS raised $102 for Doctors Without Borders through our annual Foul Shot Competition. None of this could have been accomplished without the effort and guidance of

Missing Medical Information:
Some families have received a letter from the Nurse’s Office notifying you of missing medical information. Please note that Pennsylvania School Law requires a medical examination by a physician for all students entering kindergarten, grade 6 and 11, plus all new students to Pennsylvania schools regardless of grade level. Also, Pennsylvania Department of Health guidelines require all children to have a dental exam upon entry into school; kindergarten or grade 1, 3rd and 7th grade.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

Pen Pal & Popcorn Club
I am thrilled to report that since installing the garden in 2014, Buppala Primary School is entirely self-sufficient in their lunch delivery. While RMS was once providing daily lunches to the students, the garden is now feeding the 600+ students and staff each school day. Additionally, we will be delivering 50 milk goats to students in the village to help bolster their nutrition and assist with school fees. This pay-it-forward project requires each goat

recipient to give the first nanny goat that is born to another child in the village. Children who will be receiving a goat were trained by an expert on how to care for their goats. These goats will be sporting handmade collars and leashes, crafted by every child at RMS. Follow the project at www.globalvillageconnect.org, or read the blog about this on-going exchange at www.penpaluganda.blogspot.com. Thank you for making a difference in the world, RMS!
Perfect Attendance In the first marking period, 115 RMS students received perfect attendance. These students (listed below) were at school on time every day and never dismissed early (except for school-‐related activities). Students are entitled to a snack ($1) of their choice from the cafeteria. Congratulations!
