4 PEOPLE AND PLACES THE WORKERS The workers are employed at the Ford factory in Dagenham in the UK. Most of the workers at the factory are men, but there are 187 women too. Many of the women are machinists. They use sewing machines to make car seat covers. THE UNION The union talks to the managers about any problems that the workers have. RITA Rita is a young mother with two children. She is a machinist at the Ford factory. CONNIE Connie is the machinists’ union representative. Her husband, George, is very ill. EDDIE Eddie is Rita’s husband. He works at the factory too. ALBERT Albert is the union representative for the Dagenham factory. He is popular with the workers. MONTY TAYLOR Monty works for the union head office. 5 THE MANAGEMENT The managers work for the Ford Motor Company. PETER HOPKINS Hopkins is one of Ford’s British managers. He is worried about all the strikes at the factory. BOB TOOLEY Tooley is Hopkins’ boss in America. There are a lot of strikes at the Ford factories in the UK. He wants the strikes to stop. LISA HOPKINS Lisa is Peter’s wife. Their son goes to the same school as Rita and Eddie’s son. THE GOVERNMENT BARBARA CASTLE Mrs Castle is an important politician. She is the new Employment Minister. It is her job to end all the strikes in the country. PLACES THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY Ford is a huge car company from Michigan in the United States. In the 1960s Ford had several factories in the UK including the one at Dagenham, near London. WESTMINSTER This is the centre of the British government in London. This story takes place in the UK in the 1960s. This was a time when unions and the British government did not agree very much. At the end of the 1960s there were over 2,000 strikes in the UK.
