The Rise of the Internet of ThingsPresentation by Daniel Kaufman

The Internet of Things

The past 25 years of Internet growth was fueled by human communications. The next 25 years of Internet growth will be fueled by machines.

By 2020, with more things than people on the Internet, will we still need web browsers?

Everything will be connected

Billions of wirelessly interconnected devices will communicate directly.

i.e. smart phones, smart glasses, smart cars, smart watches, drones, smart textiles, etc.

Wearable Device Growth:In 2011, there were 14 million devices sold.

In 2016, there were 171 million devices sold.

Connected Through Sensors

One of the biggest drivers of the Internet of Things

is the increasing number of low cost sensors available for many different kinds of functionality.

Some examples include…

1. Sensors to Share Data With Other Devices That Will Soon Be:

Embeddable

Implantable

Micro and nano scale

2. Accelerometer

Movement

3. Potentiometer

Sound, light, electrical potential

4. GPS

Temperature, moisture, location

5. Galvanic Skin

Heart rate

These 5 examples are all used toManage, Connect, Control & Measure Things We Care About

The Quantified SelfPlenty of room for growth in the market…

For example:

60% of US adults track their diet, exercise or weight

But, only 21% are currently using technology

–Matthew Wong, research and data analyst at CB Insights

“Venture capitalists want to have Quantified Self in their portfolios.”

But, beyond our bodies, the Internet of Things Will Disrupt Other Areas of Our Lives

Smart Homes

Google is developing a Smart Home Network just for the Internet of Things

Smart MetersA smart meter is usually an electronic device that records consumption of electric energy in intervals of an hour or less and communicates that information at least daily back to the utility for monitoring and billing.

Growth of Smart Meters

2008: 4%

2012: 18%

2020: 55%

TransportationGrowth of Connectivity Platforms in our Cars

Connected Vehicles Will Be The Norm For:

Syncing productivity

Entertainment

Traffic management

Direction to open parking spots

Electric vehicle charging

In 2012, there were 10% of car connectedBy 2020, 90% of cars will be connected!

Smart Cities

What’s a Smart City?

A city-wide network of sensors provides real-time valuable information on the flow of citizens, noise and other forms of environmental pollution, as well as traffic and weather conditions.

Smart Parking

• Connected to WiFi network.

• Online parking spot searching & payment via smartphone apps.

Smart Bus Stops• Display real time bus

times, tourist info & digital ads.

• Charging sockets for devices.

• Free WiFi hotspot.

Smart Street Lights Beyond energy efficient lighting, streetlights have sensors that: • Monitor air quality, & • Provide WiFi hotspot.

Even Garbage Bins are Connected• WiFi connected bins

monitor trash levels

• Optimize routes for garbage collection

The Global Internet of Things Market is Poised for Explosive Growth

There are 50 billion things connected to the Internet

In 2013, $1.9 trillion was contributed to the Internet of Things market

By 2020, it will be $7.1 trillion!

Larger than the projected 2020 Russian GDP

–Eric Schmidt, Google Executive Chairman

“By the end of the decade, everyone on Earth will be connected.”

How many “things,” including your body, can you communicate with through a device?

And will a smartwatch become more like a wearable woven into your garments, contact lenses or implanted into your body?

Whatever the eventual device, it is manufacturers that play a lead role in translating technologies into new products for tomorrow.
