In 1919, moderate German leaders created a democratic government.

The Weimar Republic had: A chancellor, or prime minister

A constitution

A parliamentary system

A bill of rights

A provision allowing women to vote

Was mostly made up of Jews and Marxists

Germans of all classes hated the Treaty of Versailles, which the Weimar Republic signed.

Therefore, Germans of all classes hated the Weimar Republic.

Hitler joined a tiny political group called the National Socialist

German Worker’s Party (Nazi)

Impressed by his oratory (speaking) and organization skills,

the party chose Hitler to be their leader.

Plan fails and Hitler is blamed and put in jail.

The Great Depression had hit Germany and caused widespread unemployment (six mil l ion by 1932)

Hitler became vastly ( largely) popular promising strong leadership, unity, and rel ief from economic problems.

The Weimar Republic was on the brink of fai l ing, and the people blamed them for the depression.

In a desperate move to save face, President Hindenburg appointed Hit ler as Chancel lor (prime minister) of Germany, January 30, 1933.

Soon, Hit ler used his posit ion and popularity to take complete control over Germany.
