SAFETY MATTERS

Greet the season with savingsPut an energy-saving touch on your holiday traditions with these tips:

Use LED holiday lights. LEDs use as much as 90 percent less electricity than conventional incandescent mini lights and last up to 10 times longer.

Give the gift of ENERGY STAR qualified products. Big screens, computers, DVRs – be a wattsmart Santa and deliver an energy-efficient gift.

Consider giving a smart thermostat to a special person on your list. These devices allow you to remotely control temperature settings and more. Plus, you can get $50 cash back from Energy Trust on qualifying models.

Find more ideas at bewattsmart.com.

Our employees volunteer at food banks, animal shelters, schools and more. For Kim McCune, hydro operations senior business administrator, supporting her community means putting on diving gear.

McCune has been an open-water certified diver since 1988 and uses her underwater skills to help the Oregon Zoo. She works in marine animal exhibits – feeding, assisting research and scrubbing algae.

“It’s truly a delight when children are present with their bright, enormous smiles when they see a diver in the water,” McCune said. “Our efforts may one day spark an interest in a young person to pursue wildlife or marine biology as an adult.”

McCune spends her days above water at the company’s Lewis River hydroelectric facilities. She coordinates the many details involved in the projects’ license agreements, and helps manage public use of our recreation areas along the river.

Employee dives into volunteering

Many homes waste up to 35 percent of the energy they use when heated air escapes in the winter, or cool air escapes in the summer. Keep your home comfortable and save energy by upgrading insulation in your attic, floors and walls. Better insulation can reduce outside noise, save energy and lower your heating costs.

To make your home even more efficient, install ENERGY STAR® qualified high-efficiency windows.

Installing insulation and new windows are two wattsmart ways to increase comfort and save money year-round. Plus, you can receive cash incentives from Energy Trust of Oregon for qualifying upgrades.

• Turn off light displays before leaving home or going to bed.

• Inspect and make sure decorative lights have no frayed wires, cracked sockets or connections that may cause a fire or electrical injury.

• Do not overload electrical outlets with holiday lights.
