What is N-DExGathers and stores electronic records from RMS systems from
law enforcement/criminal justice agencies across the country:
1. Incident and case reports, - Data Fields & NarrativesTicketsTraffic stopsAccident dataCAD
2. Arrest and Booking data – Data & Images3. Incarceration/Corrections data, and 4. Probation and parole data
N-DEx searches for and detects relationships between people, vehicle/property, location and/or crime characteristics within that data.
N-DEx Data Sharing Control
The data owner controls dissemination of their data submitted N-DEx by assigning levels of sensitivity that protect investigative equities. – Desire, Policy, Law
LEVEL 1 – NOT RESTRICTED
Green level data is disseminated to all authorized users.
LEVEL 2 – POINTERN-DEx provides the capability for data contributors to specify
“pointer based” sharing of data. (POC Info Only)
LEVEL 3 – RESTRICTEDN-DEx provides the capability for data contributors to restrict data they submit to N-DEx. The Red level is reserved for the
most restricted investigative information.

Require that only agencies deemed to be “criminal justice agencies” or agencies performing an “administration of criminal justice” in accordance with Title 28, Code of Federal Regulations [CFR], Part 20, Subpart (A) be considered for N-DEx access.
N-DEx Access• N-DEx contains criminal justice information obtained by
criminal justice agencies in connection with their official duties administering criminal justice.
• N-DEx system access is restricted to criminal justice agencies and agencies performing the administration of criminal justice.
• List of acceptable uses:
• Law Enforcement Investigation• Pretrial Release Investigation• Intake Investigation• Correctional Institution Investigation• Pre-Sentence Investigation• Supervision Investigation• Data Management• Training
• Criminal Justice Employment Background Checks.
N-DEx Acceptable Uses
The CJIS Advisory Policy Board affirmed N-DEx may be used by personnel engagedin the following job activities.
Approved N-DEx Access
Agency Types (identified by 9th character of ORI):Law Enforcement 0 - 9 (numeric values) Law Enforcement Agencies, e.g., police, sheriff, etc.
Criminal Justice
A - Prosecuting Attorney's Offices (includes District Attorney's Offices, Attorney General's Offices, etc.)
B - Pretrial service agencies and pretrial release agencies
C - Correctional Institutions (includes, jails, prisons, detention centers, etc.)
E - Nongovernmental railroad or campas police departments qualifying for access to III
G - Probation and Parole Offices
I - INTERPOL
J – Courts and Magistrates Offices
M – Custodial facilities in medical or psychiatric institutions and some medical examiners’ offices which are CJ in function
N- Regional dispatch centers that are CJAs or noncriminal justice governmental agencies performing DJ dispatching functions for CJAs
Y - Local, county, state, or federal agencies that are classified as criminal justice agencies by statute but do not fall into one of the aforementioned categories, e.g., Arkansas Crime Information Center
