VOLUNTEER TICKET REQUESTS

Due to Hamilton, the Box Office is a little behind and is processing tickets in show date order on the calendar. Thank you for your patience as we all adjust to the new ticket processing procedure. Starting in December, your tickets should be processed the one week from the Wednesday requested. Example: You should re-ceive a confirmation by December 11th for tickets requested on December 4th. If more than a week has passed please e-mail us at volunteers@arshtcenter.org. As of now, we are working with the box office to get caught up.

For fastest processing, your request should look similar to below. Please write the date in mm/dd/yyyy format and indicate actual show time instead of indicating “evening” or “matinee.” Let us know if you have any questions.

ADVISORY TEAM NEWS

An Advisory Team Meeting took place on Monday, November 18th.

Please see below agenda items that were discussed and the results:

• Hamilton Challenge—

Brainstorming on incentives for signing up for multiple shows

Legacy Volunteer Benefits—

We will be discussing benefits that legacy volunteers will receive

December Potluck— we won’t be having one this holiday season but will be

looking to do it after Hamilton if possible

Trainings—we are discussing upcoming trainings that we will bring to the

volunteer program to inclue conflict resolution and dealing with difficult

guests

Our next meeting is Monday, December 3rd 2019. If you would like to add an-

Many years ago the late great Donna Summer penned a phrase that was meant to describe the Arsht Center Women “She works hard for the money”. The Dorsey family would like to celebrate the Arsht Women here at the holiday season. We know how hard you work and the sacrifices you make for your career. So for you a small token of our appreciation. In my office is a Holiday Tree. Pictures are attached. If you are interested please e-mail Nicole. She will put your name on a paper slip and drop it in the glass canister. I will draw for a winner at 4:00pm next Tuesday. One entry per person. THE HAMILTON CHALLENGE

With Hamilton coming up around the corner, we thought we may as well have a little fun with it! See the various incentive options below that the advisory team helped me to come up with. In addition we will be raffling off T-shirts, Arsht Center swag and a hotel stay for two at the Marriott Biscayne Bay!

A friendly reminder that Books and Books doubles

vouchers are only issued to volunteers working a double shift of performances on the

weekends. If you plan on being on campus for other

events that are not performances, please plan on making other arrange-

ments for meals. Thank you in advance for you under-standing and cooperation.

We have opened up the Docent Assistant

position to everyone who would like to help

with tours. It is an excellent way to

continue to learn more about the Center and a good way to earn extra

hours too! Thanks in advance for your help.

Those interested in becoming a Docent, a

new Docent training will be added to the calendar

soon.

If all shifts committed to above fall on either a Saturday or Sunday and are fulfilled

TOYS FOR TOTS!

Adrienne Arsht Center will be an official drop off location for Tots for Tots again this year. Starting today thru Thursday, December 12th, 2019 we will be collecting new, unwrapped toys that will be distribut-ed to local children to bring happiness & smiles for the holidays.

Local 10 and The Big Red Bus Toy pick-up at 9:00AM on Fri-day, December 13th. If you’re interested in caroling LIVE on air, we will have our very own Mariah Forde leading rehearsals for the big day. Please feel free to reach out and contact her via MForde@arshtcenter.org. Otherwise, ALL are welcome to join us in the ZBOH Lobby as we send off the donated toys to their new friends! !

Stories, messages and fantasy ART MATTERS

“Music is the Universal Language of Mankind,” a famous quote from American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. As true today in our 21st century as it was in his 19th. Further back in time, Middle Ages, 5th – 15th centuries, traveling troubadours told the news of the day, both words and melody. These first reporters pre-dated the printing press and were wel-comed enthusiastically!

Songwriting is an evolving craft, according to Janet Goodman. Janet’s our Miami Shores neighbor, many of you know from her successful business Good Dog Bad Dog. Our pooches walk proudly and properly around our village because of her ‘Good Dog’ training.

However, her passion is really songwriting. She’s also recognized as a coordinator of the South Florida Chapter of the Nash-ville Songwriters Association International. Janet shares her knowledge and appreciation for these songwriting storytellers.

“Hush little baby don’t you cry,” ”A, B, C, D, F, G,” ”Ring a’round the rosey”…and so many more little ditties and songs begin our life’s story. Leading to our patriotic National Anthem in kindergarten, and on to songs about our love, angst and triumphs in our teens. You’re never too young or too old to sing a song, choose your favorite for its message and melody.

“Whisper words of wisdom, LET IT BE” advised Paul McCartney and the Beatles. Today’s similar and familiar message ‘GET OVER IT’ was popularized in the 1990’s by The Eagles, Don Henley. Listening today on YouTube, it’s still just as cur-rent. And that’s how our entertainment has evolved as Janet says.

If you love it, join the fun, she says songwriting is a craft and can be learned. There are music programs at schools of music, one of the most recognized is the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There are also workshops, books and YouTube ‘how-to’ videos. Check out (pun in-tended) the 6 Steps to Songwriting Success by Jason Blume, new at Brockway memorial Library. Executive Director, Michelle Brown bought it especially for anyone interested in taking Janet’s advice!

Janet says it’s not really poetry, but words, many rhyming which she explains is what we favor in our Western culture.

As an example, most of us know, Billy Joel’s, Piano Man: “The regular crowd shuffles in, There’s an old man sitting next to me, making love to his tonic and gin…” it continues, “I’m not really sure how it goes, but it’s sad and it’s sweet, and I knew it complete, When I wore a younger man’s clothes…”

What makes a good song? Not easy to answer, but you start with an inspira-tion, while driving, walking a dog perhaps? Write it on a scrap of paper, or napkin? Enter it into your ‘hook book.’ The hook is your main idea, title or chorus. The Beatles, LET IT BE, repeats throughout this famous song. Its message is, forget the past and look towards your future, just let it be!

What’s your genre? Country, Rock, Rap, Blues, Jazz or Americana? What gets your melody rolling?

Many songwriters are also the musicians and performers, thinking the music and lyrics.

Others work in teams, co-writing, or collaborating. Some famous examples are Aerosmith’s, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, the Beatles’, John Lennnon and Paul McCartney, Led Zeppelin’s, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, the Rolling Stones’, Mick Jag-ger and Keith Richards.

Both the lyrics and the music should have repetition. A good song feels comfortable, takes us for a ride. Gets toes tapping, fingers snapping and hips swaying. R&B’s another genre, RHYTHM and Blues. As our hometown girl says, ‘the rhythm’s gonna get you.’ Singer, Gloria Estefan co-wrote the song with Miami Sound Machine’s, drummer, Enrique, ‘KiKi’, Garcia.

All this creativity is really a big business that’s in flux at the moment. Janet says songwriters all depend upon the Perfor-mance Rights Organizations to monitor and collect royalties from plays on the radio and performance gigs.

When a songwriter gives permission to use their work to a performer, they’re licensing the rights. However, that’s not like buying a painting, as the songwriter you still are able to receive the royalties each time it’s performed, plus mechanical roy-alties for CDs sold by record companies and streaming royalties. Where can you hear some of Janet’s songs? She’s co-written with Diane Ward, one of South Florida’s favorite singer/songwriter musicians.

Just up the road in North Miami is South Florida’s favorite, live original music venue. Seating about 50 max, Luna Star Ca-fé’s owner Alexis Sanfield, has introduced many new talented singers and songwriters in the 22 years she’s been across from MOCA. It’s a comfortable and safe space to test new work or begin a career. You’ll find both Janet and Michael Stock there frequently. Luna Star Café, 775 NE 125th St.
