A Message from Dr. JohnsonDear Ride For Roswell supporters and friends,

Thank you for your dedicated participation in The Ride For Roswell, presented by West Herr Automotive Group! I look forward to celebrating your collective efforts and the spirit of The Ride community that makes this weekend an unforgettable experience.

Every donation to The Ride is critical to carrying our momentum forward toward finding the next cure. More people are surviving or living with cancer than ever before, thanks to advancements in early detection and more

effective treatments, but until we no longer fear a cancer diagnosis, there’s more progress to be made and lives to be saved.

Since last year’s Ride, your efforts have allowed us to provide:

• Genetic tests and innovative therapies that have given hope to patients who have failed standard treatment.

• A comprehensive survivorship program to those who are struggling with the emotional and physical side effects, that can come with a cancer diagnosis.

• Compassionate quality-of-life programs to patients and families at times when they’ve needed them most.

The Ride will enable us to continue these efforts, and this year $1 million from the donations you’ve raised will fuel a competition that will provide seed funding for some of the best and most promising new research initiatives at Roswell Park. That means the next Ride donation could be the catalyst for the next lifesaving discovery.

I’m excited to kick off this year’s Ride with you on Friday evening at the Celebration of Hope, a rally against cancer and a chance for us to honor the survivors, patients and other Roswell Park heroes who are fighting for a cure. On Saturday, The Ride itself will feature 8,000 riders and 2,000 volunteers across the Western New York community, spanning over 400 miles, 14 municipalities and two countries. Each of these dedicated supporters will carry with them a message of hope — hope that we can and will create a cancer-free tomorrow.

Thank you again to all of the riders, volunteers, sponsors, donors and staff for everything you’ve done to make this year’s Ride a success. Your support raises the spirits of our cancer patients, our survivors and their loved ones and makes all the difference at Roswell Park, every day.

Candace S. Johnson, PhD President and CEO, Roswell Park Cancer Institute Wallace Family Chair in Translational Research

Where the Funds GoFunds raised through The Ride For Roswell stay in Western New York and enable Roswell Park to fuel the cutting-edge research and patient-care programs that benefit the 34,000 patients who turn to the Institute for hope every year. Donations are used to improve the patient and family experience, support the development and testing of promising new clinical treatments and educate the next generation of cancer scientists and clinicians.

Funds raised in 2017 will benefit some of the Institute’s highest fundraising priorities, including:

Z Developing new clinical trials that will bring lifesaving treatments to patients right here in Buffalo and across the nation.

Z Awarding grants through Roswell Park’s Scientific Advisory Committee to launch promising new research initiatives.

Z Fueling the initial clinical studies for CIMAvax-EGF, a vaccine for advanced-stage lung cancer that was developed in Cuba. Roswell Park is the first and only U.S. institution to offer this promising immunotherapy.

Z Providing patients with essential quality-of-life programs that lend an extra helping hand, give emotional support and provide creative, diversionary outlets to patients and their families.

Basic Rider InformationParking Visit rideforroswell.org/parking for parking maps and information.

Roswell Park Parking & Rider Drop Off Free parking is available in the 589 Ellicott St. Lot on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus for riders on the 14-mile RosRoll and both Canada routes. The Canada routes will finish at UB and riders will need to make arrangements for transportation from UB. We recommend that riders plan to be dropped off at Roswell Park in the morning and have someone meet them at UB after The Ride. Alternatively, limited bus shuttles will be available from UB to Roswell Park. Please Note: Carlton, Elm and Oak streets will be closed to car traffic, and the hospital parking ramp is reserved for patients, so please do not drop off or unload at the main hospital entrance or parking ramp.

Shuttles Bus shuttles are scheduled from UB back to Roswell Park every 30 minutes from 10:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.. They will transport riders from the Lee Loop to the 589 Ellicott Lot. Each bus has room for 50 passengers and up to three bicycles on the front rack.

Taxi Services Taxi services will be available on Friday and Saturday. Look for yellow and black checkered flags throughout campus.

Packet Pickup You can pick up your rider packet at UB’s Edward Wright Practice Facility (inside Alumni Arena). You can also drop off any last minute donations at packet pickup.

Team Deliveries Team captains who have reserved a tent will receive a team delivery parking pass by mail one week prior to The Ride. Your tent and reserved parking location will be included in the mailing. Volunteers will be available to assist you with delivering materials to your team tent during specified days and times. Team captains with tents are allowed to park one car for the day in the specified lots.

Team Tents Visit rideforroswell.org/teamtents for a Team Tent map or get one at Packet Pickup.

Bike Parking There will be several bike racks, sponsored by Ferguson Electric, for use at both UB and Roswell Park. Park your bike at your own risk. Riders

rideforroswell.org11

Rider Safety1. The Ride is NOT a race.

Ride steady, share the road and no more than two people to a lane.

2. Ride right. Pass left. Stay right unless passing, and if something goes wrong, pull off to the right.

3. Keep your ears and eyes alert at all times. Headphones will distract your ability to hear emergency vehicles and other riders. Cell phones will distract you from seeing other riders and obstacles. Pull off to the right in emergency situations to use your cell phone.

4. Helmets are a MUST! No helmet, no Ride… no exceptions!

5. Take care of your body. Dress in layers, wear sunscreen, eat plenty of healthy food and bring water to stay hydrated.

6. Tune up your bike. Bring your bike in to one of our local bike shop partners for a tune-up before Ride Day.

7. Children & Pets For the safety of yourself and others, please do not pull children in wagons along the route. We also ask that spectators leave their pets at home.

Remember the A-B-C Quick Check A: Air pressure. Squeeze your tires to make sure you don’t have a flat or they aren’t soft because they’re under-inflated. Use a tire gauge and a pump or visit one of The Ride’s local bike shop partners for a fix.

B: Brakes. Check yours. Are they tight enough? Or are they squeaking and too tight? Your local bike shop can help.

C: Chain. Look it over. When’s the last time you lubricated it? A broken chain can hinder or end your ride.

What to ExpectBefore you leave home: Check the weather and dress appropriately (The Ride happens rain or shine). Wear bright and/or reflective clothing, and avoid wearing anything loose that might catch on your bike. Eat breakfast – and don’t forget your helmet or your bike!

Before The Ride: There will be complimentary food and beverages provided. “I’m Riding For…” cards will be available in the Roswell Park Experience Tent. Before you get on your bike, take a moment to stretch and to warm up. If you have special needs, please make reference to those specific needs on your rider bib when you check in.

During The Ride: You’ll find restrooms, water and food at our rest stops. Drink water before you feel thirsty, and try to drink one bottle of water each hour and be sure to eat at least once while you’re on the road.

Be aware of how you’re feeling. You’re more likely to finish – in good spirits – if you keep a steady pace. If you’re feeling too tired or not feeling well enough to finish, or if you need medical attention, you’ll find Ride volunteers at intersections, rest stops, and in marked support vehicles. Or ask a Riding Marshal to assist you by calling 716-THE-RIDE.

After The Ride: You’ll find restrooms, food, beverages and festivities back at UB or Roswell Park, depending on your route. Find a place to park your bike, and take a moment to stretch, then congratulate yourself on a great Ride. Enjoy the picnic and share your tales of the road.

Thank you for riding!
