RICE COUNTY VETERANS MEMORIAL

History and PurposeAlthough there had been talk about an expansion of a veteran’s memorial for several years there had never been a concerted effort to address that desire and formulate a planning committee.

In June 2007 the Rice County Central Veterans were approached regarding an expansion. Outgoing President Lloyd Grandprey and incoming President Bob Ackman both embraced the concept and a committee was formed. Original members of the committee were Richard Cook, Lloyd Grandprey, Bob Ackman, Amy Lindsay, Wally Duchene, Steve Ernste, Paul Johnson, Jim Douda, Don Kelly, Bob Johnson, Pete Flannery, Chuck Carr and Chuck Oliver. Sadly, Bob Ackman, a founding member of the memorial expansion, passed away September 16, 2008. In 2009 Kirk Mansfield joined the committee bringing in new blood and value added expertise.

The committee has met regularly retaining a solid and committed core group of about six. Sadly we lost another proud member, Wally Duchene, in 2012.

First order of business was picking a site. A few potential sites were identified and narrowed down. A unanimous final location was the Rice County Courthouse adjacent to the current Civil War Monument. The committee presented the idea to the Rice County Commission and received preliminary approval pending a final design and site plan.

The committee then embarked upon the task of design meetings with several potential designers and architects. In early 2008 the committee settled unanimously on certified Memorialist Jeff Anderson from Anderson Memorials of Austin, Minnesota. Jeff has extensive knowledge of memorials having assisted on several award winning the designs and implementation of Veteran’s Memorials around the state and country.

A community meeting was organized in March of 2008 where ideas were presented and input solicited from those in attendance. Most wanted an expansion dedicated to the veteran and branches of the service, not a war memorial, but with a heavy emphasis on the sacrifice of the warrior. These ideas were cataloged and taken back to committee. Several more meetings were held throughout the summer of 2008 refining the design details.

Once comfortable with the design and scope of the project, I & S, Engineering of Faribault put together an in-kind artist rendition and site plan for the project.

The committee then focused on developing brochures, promoting paver sales and brain storming other fundraising possibilities. Things slowed down late 2008-early 2009 as the economy and other decisions temporarily stalled the project. The committee re-focused in April-May of 2009, clarified design issues with Anderson Memorials and broke ground on July 11, 2009 almost 92 years since dedication of the Civil War Monument.

To date many donations and much volunteer time and labor continue to make this long awaited expansion become a reality.
