PREFACE

rhythm noun \’ri-th m\: a regular, repeated pattern of sounds or movements

We are immersed in rhythms. ey surround us. e sun rises and the night falls. e tides roll in and out with the passing moon. Birds chirp, clocks tick, raindrops fall – all to a consistent tempo. e world around us is full of these regular, repeated patterns. But they aren't just around us – they are within us. Our hearts beat and our lungs breathe. Our veins expand and contract as life ows through them. It is even by rhythms that we mark time. Hours, days, years, are all lived in the ebb and ow of work, sleep, and meals. All are rhythms – within and without. Our Creator has made everything in this way.

But we don't just nd rhythms in the created order. roughout the Scriptures, God provides his people with rhythms by which to order their lives. In the Old Testament, we see that he gave the people of Israel Sabbaths and feasts to help them remember his work as Creator and Savior. In the Gospels we read that, on the night before Jesus died for us, he instituted the Sacrament of Communion. When we partake in the bread and wine, we remember his suering and death on our behalf. Over the past 2,000 years, the Church has instituted feasts, holy days and seasons in order that we might orient our lives around the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. All these patterns are given as means of grace by which we are reminded who God is and who he's called us to be.

As Anglicans, we have been given the Book of Common Prayer – a collection of prayers, Scripture readings, and liturgies that help us immerse our lives into the life of Christ. Introduced in 1549, the Book of Common Prayer was created to provide the people of England with a resource to engage in Scripture, learn to pray, and ultimately, deepen their understanding of the Gospel. Christians all over the world have used it for over 500 years. It is Scriptural, practical, and beautiful; but it can also be daunting.

e aim of e Rhythms Project is to compile the proper readings from the Book of Common Prayer (Daily Oce and Lectionary) and the Collects (prayers) in a way that is simple and easy to use. A corresponding reading from e Jesus Storybook Bible has been added to encourage times of family or communal worship. In addition, you will nd a weekly practice to encourage you to live into the things you are learning. is rst installment of e Rhythms Project will contain the fteen-week journey of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany. Our hope is that this resource would give you the tools to immerse the normal rhythms of your life into the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

HELPFUL TOOLS

e Rhythms Project seeks to combine the best of the Book of Common Prayer, the Church Calendar, and e Jesus Storybook Bible into an accessible resource to guide your spiritual life over the next fteen weeks. It is made up of daily personal readings and weekly communal worship that will encourage our church to journey through the Christian Calendar together.

For your personal reading, nd a time that you can consistently set aside twenty minutes. is can be any time of day, but seek to make it when you are at your best, both mentally and physically. As you begin, stop and pray for the Holy Spirit to use this time to illuminate the Scriptures to you. en, read through the Daily Oce readings for that day. Feel free to choose one or two, or read them all if time allows. en, pick one of the passages that “jumps” out at you and walk through SOAP. Simply write down the Scripture. Make an Observation about it. Apply it to your life today. And say a Prayer to ask Jesus to help you walk in that newly revealed truth. en, take the time to pray the Collect of the week or say the Lord's Prayer.

For your communal worship time, nd a time that your family or friends can gather once a week for thirty minutes. is could be right before bed, rst thing in the morning, or any time in between. Just nd a time that works for you. Begin by praying the Collect of the week together or pick one person to pray it out loud. en read a passage from the Lectionary readings and discuss or SOAP it together. If you have small children (or even if you don't!) read the selected story from e Jesus Storybook Bible. You might ask questions like: What does this passage say about Christ and his nished work of redemption? What does it say about your identity in him? What might he be calling you to do in response? en, look at the practice for the week. is is a way for you to embody the things you are learning and give you creative ways to live on mission. Plan a time to engage the practice in the following week. Finish by singing a song or praying the Lord's Prayer together.

ADVENT

Page 7: The Rhythms Project

Advent is a season of waiting. It is a time to remember God’s promises throughout the Old Testament to rescue and redeem his people through the Messiah. ese were fullled when Jesus came, not as a king, but as a servant. He didn’t come to save them from the Romans, but rather to save them from their sins. As Christians, Advent calls us to remember that one day Christ will come again, not as a servant, but as a conquering King. He will come to put all the brokenness of this world to rights. He will come to make all things new.

During this season, seek to set aside all the distractions of the holiday season and posture your heart in a way that allows you to long for the second coming of Christ. May your Advent prayer be, Maranatha - come Lord Jesus.

ADVENT

Page 9: The Rhythms Project

e rst coming of Christ the Lord, God’s Son and our God, was in obscurity; the second will be in sight of the whole world. When he came in obscurity no one recognized him but his own servants; when he comes openly he will be known by both good people and bad.

When he came in obscurity it was to be judged; when he comes openly it will be to judge.

THESEASON OF

CHRISTMAS

Page 15: The Rhythms Project

Christmas is a season of arrival. After the somber tone of Advent, Christmas comes as a time of joy and celebration. is season calls us to remember that God has fullled his promises in Scripture by sending Christ in the esh. Christ humbled himself, taking on the form of a servant, so that through his life, death, and resurrection, we could be raised up with him. God’s plan of redemption was begun through the mystery of the Incarnation. is is good news.

Historically, Christians have celebrated Christmas for twelve full days. So don’t just celebrate the birth of Christ for one day, but rather take the time to be overjoyed by the arrival of our King. Savor good food and drink. Spend time with loved ones. ank God for all the gifts he has bestowed on you, but especially for the gift of his only begotten Son, Christ Jesus our Lord. May your Christmas prayer be, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!

THESEASON OF

EPIPHANY

Page 21: The Rhythms Project

Epiphany is a season of appearing. roughout Church history, it has been a time for Christians to observe the many ways that the glory of God is revealed through the life of Christ. We look to stories like the journey of the Magi, the Baptism of Jesus, and the Transguration to reect on the Lordship of Christ, and like the disciples, we are called to respond to him.

During this season, take the time to reect upon the life of Christ. Meditate upon his words found in the Gospels. ink on his miracles and kindness towards the people he encounters. Ask the Holy Spirit to use this time to enable you to walk in the ways of Christ through service and love towards everyone you encounter. May your Epiphany prayer be, Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

is week, as we bring our journey from Advent through Epiphany to a close, consider taking time out of your week to mark what the Lord has accomplished in you. As you review the story of Jesus being transxed on the mountain, nd a secluded space to spend time with Jesus for an hour or an afternoon. Look back on the last few months and consider what God

has done in you during the past fteen weeks. Write down a few memorable verses or moments from your time.

TRANSFIGURATION SUNDAY - 3/2/14

O God, who before the passion of your only-begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
