The rhythm of the school changes somewhat when examinations are upon us and even those who are not writing become aware of a different intensity, as the co-curricular programme slows and the need for revision increases. For those who are supporting students who are in the midst of examinations, please allow them time to exercise and time to study. Both are important and both need scheduling. For those not writing examinations, the term continues as usual, so please ensure that your children are at school. Do not forget to provide your child with a new book for the founding of our Lesedi Trust Library, as part of our contribution to Mandela Day. The book should be appropriate for children from Grades 4 to 7. We also welcome donations of R200 or more, which will go towards the purchase of books. The students will be reading for 67 minutes, so they also need to bring books that they enjoy for that purpose. We shall be launching our involvement in the Trust at a special Mandela Day assembly. This is an important milestone in our history and further details of how we all – young and not-so-young alike – can be involved will be sent JULY 2019 | SECOND TERM | VOLUME 2 #20

in due course. Students may wear civvies that relate to a South African theme on the day. We encourage them to be creative!

We shall be practising procedures for a lockdown in the final week of the term. It is a sad but necessary aspect of security in this day and age that this has to happen. The lockdown practice allows us to prepare for an incident where all children need to take cover in classrooms or other buildings on our campus. We are fully aware that this can be traumatic if not treated with due caution and we assure you that we shall explain the procedures in age-appropriate ways to all students. We appreciate your assistance in this, should your child raise the topic at home.

All matches are against equivalent teams unless otherwise stated.

SOUTH AFRICAN OPEN JUDO CHAMPIONSHIP

Nate Johnson, qualified to represent Johannesburg in the South African Open Judo Championships over the mid term break. The event was held at Emerald Casino and Resort and took place over 4 days. Nate fights in the Under 34kg U9 group and has really worked hard this year to make it to this competition. The competition saw fighters who qualified from all over South Africa as well as Germany, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia compete for their respective countries or Provinces. Nate was the only Johannesburg based fighter to make it to the final 4 which saw him lose in the finals to Namibia’s number 1 fighter. Nate finally placed 4th overall for his group which is an incredible achievement, considering 1st place gets JSA Protea colours.
