Volume 6 Issue 3

This year, more than ever, it feels so good

to finally get outside and enjoy the warm

summer air! The 13th Annual NCCU Golf

Classic is scheduled for Saturday, July

19th, and we plan to do just that. This

event, which will be held at the Park Falls

Country Club, is jointly sponsored by

NCCU and our partners at Flambeau

Hospital, Wheel Way Chevrolet/Buick,

Stueber’s Ace Hardware, Miller Beer of

the Northwoods, and Heartland Communi-

cations.

The beneficiary for this year’s NCCU

Charity Golf Classic is the Park Falls

Area Chamber of Commerce/

Community Fireworks Fund. Our annual event, now in its thirteenth year,

has helped our past beneficiaries receive

over $33,000 throughout the years! These

funds help local organizations continue to

provide services that might not otherwise

be available. If you are a golfer, we

would love to have you participate in our

Golf Classic! Our event is an 18 hole, four

person scramble with a shotgun start.

The cost is $50 per person and includes

greens fee and dinner, catered by

Kountry Kafé of Fifield. Lunch will be

available for purchase. Register your

team by calling the Park Falls Country

Club at 715.762.4396.

If you don’t golf, but would like to support

the event and the Park Falls Community

Fireworks, raffle tickets can be purchased

at the Chamber office in Park Falls, the

Park Falls Country Club, or NCCU. You

could win a Weber gas grill donated by

Stueber’s Ace Hardware, $200 cash

donated by Flambeau Hospital, $150 cash

donated by David Zoesch Trucking, $100

cash donated by NCCU, 4 Milwaukee

Brewers Tickets donated by 99.7 The

Storm, and other great prizes! Raffle

tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.00.

We hope to see you on the course July

19th!

Thank you to everyone who came out and celebrated Member

Appreciation Day with us! We value each and every one of you, and it’s so great to get a chance to show you just how

important you are!

The history of Northwoods Community Credit Union has been an interesting journey

with a lot of growth and change along the way. When the credit union first began in

1953, transactions were carried out in people’s homes. Now NCCU has three

branches serving almost 8,000 members in 14 counties. This NCCU building was a

hub of activity, with NCCU growing and expanding by leaps and bounds. Eventu-

ally, NCCU outgrew this space, and in 2003 the new Park Falls office was built. This

April, the former office building was sold, ending that chapter of NCCU history.

Many fond memories were made in this office building, which will live on as we

continue to grow and expand in the coming years.

As many of you know, prior to 1994

we offered a Life Savings Insurance

Program for NCCU members. We

partnered with CUNA Mutual Group

on this program, and have recently

been informed that it is being

discontinued. The letter below

from CUNA Mutual explains the

discontinuation of the insurance

program.

Dear Member:

At CMFG Life Insurance Company

(CMFG Life), we regularly evaluate

our products to ensure we are

delivering value to the credit unions

and members we serve. Due to a

significant decline in demand from

credit unions and their members,

we have made the difficult decision

to exit the Life Savings product cur-

rently offered to you through

Northwoods Community Credit

Union. Life Savings was developed

more than 75 years ago and has

been in a steady state of decline for

the last several years. Life Savings is

structured as a monthly policy

where the credit union pays the

premium for each month, rather

than building equity over time.

Per the terms of the group policy

issued to your credit union, your

Life Savings insurance will expire

on December 31, 2014.

This insurance has been provided at

no direct cost to you for eligible

deposits. Coverage on existing

eligible deposits will cease on

January 31, 2015. All eligible claims

incurred on or before January 31,

2015 will be honored.

We know many of you value the

peace of mind and security that life

insurance provides. That’s why we

wanted you to know you can convert

your Life Savings coverage to a

guaranteed issue Primary Protection

Plan, underwritten by CMFG Life.

This new policy would provide life

insurance coverage up to $3,000. If

you decide to take advantage of

the conversion option, you must

apply by January 31, 2015. You will

be responsible for premium

payments, and your new policy will

be effective after you complete the

application process. Your premiums

will be based on your age at time of

application.

Conversion is simple. Just request,

complete, and return an application

with your first premium payment

directly to CMFG Life by January 31,

2015, in order to receive coverage.

To request the application, call

855.728.5205 to speak with a fully

licensed insurance representative.

Our staff will review your situation

with you and provide guidance to

ensure you have the right type and

amount of insurance protection for

you and your family based on your

current and future needs.

Please contact CMFG Life at

855.728.5205 with any questions.

Sincerely,

Jim Power

The Board of Directors recently approved a Denial of

Services Policy to protect our membership against

financial losses, including excessive legal and/or

frivolously incurred expenses, property damage, and

possible abuse against our employees, board, volunteers

and other members. What does this mean to you? The

credit union can deny basic financial services and access

to any NCCU facility or event if you:

Have been abusive or threatening.

Have caused NCCU a loss, such as a loan default, account overdraft, or taking action that would render

all or parts of your obligations at NCCU unenforceable

Intentionally or otherwise perpetrate fraud or poten-tial fraud on NCCU

Any other reason that poses a safety or soundness threat to NCCU.

NCCU may deny you the right to specific services such as

a share draft account, share certificate, or new loan. We

may also deny you as a joint owner and/or co-borrower

on any account at any time. If NCCU does deny you

services, you will be given notice.

The prime member on the account shall still have the right

to maintain a share savings account and the right to vote,

unless they are expelled by the Board of Directors, as

defined in our bylaws.

New ATM Coming to Park Falls Office! We are very excited to announce that we will be

installing a new ATM at our Park Falls office later this

summer! We are sure you will find this ATM to be

faster and more efficient than

our current ATM. The ATM will

still be in the same location,

allowing members to drive

through and conveniently make

a transaction. Watch for this

new ATM in August!

Piggy Bank Hunt St. Anthony’s School in Park Falls agreed to be our

guinea pig (no pun intended) in this new financial

literacy activity called the Piggy Bank Hunt. This is an

interactive way to engage students while learning

financial literacy skills . Through participation in the

treasure hunt, middle school students develop financial

awareness and sharpen their financial decision-making

skills.

The Piggy Bank Hunt challenges students to solve clues

and complete financial literacy lessons over a six-week

period, in an attempt to be one of the first students to

find the piggy bank. Students view online video clips

from the Biz Kid$ TV series, a national public TV series

that teaches kids about money and business. The first

student to successfully complete all of the lessons wins

a grand prize of $125. This first place finisher also gets

to select a non-profit organization to receive a $250.00

donation from NCCU. The second finisher receives

$75, and the third receives $50. The Piggy Bank Hunt

concluded on May 27th, and the top three finishers

were:

1st place: James Mineau

2nd place: Shea Mineau

3rd place: Marina Windmoeller

Below are the students who completed the Piggy Bank

Hunt, along with

Rachel Meier

from Catkins

Animal Rescue,

the non profit

organization that

was chosen by

the top finisher

to receive the

$250 donation

from NCCU.

Protect Yourself When Shopping Online Online shopping is a very common practice for most of us, especially in our rural location. Here are some tips,

provided by the Better Business Bureau, to help ensure that your cyber shopping experience is a safe one:

If you're interested in trying a new online merchant who you’re not familiar with, ask the company for its

physical location (address and phone number) so that you can check on its reliability with outside organizations

like the Better Business Bureau.

Determine the company's refund and return policies before you place an order. If online companies can’t offer concrete commitments on how they will handle any potential problems you may have with their products or

services, reconsider doing business with them.

Protect Your Passwords. Never give out your Internet password. When creating a password, avoid using established numbers such as your house number, birth date, or telephone numbers.

Be sure you have a thorough understanding of everything involved before placing an order. Be clear on the

price and any shipping and handling charges. Know the terms of any product or service guarantees. Find out

how long it will be before you receive your order. Federal law requires that goods and services be delivered

within 30 days, unless a different delivery period is specifically stated by the merchant.

Guard Your Personal Information. Only provide your credit card information or Social Security number online in

a secure environment.

Keep a Paper Trail. Print out the URL web address of the company site you are on. The URL ensures that you are dealing with the right company. It's also a good idea to print out a copy of your order and confirmation number

for your records.

Know Your Consumer Rights. The same laws that protect you when you shop by phone or mail apply when you shop in cyberspace. Under the law, a company must ship your order within the time stated in its ads. If you

decide to pay by credit card, your transaction will be protected by the Fair Credit Billing Act. If you do suspect

that you have been a victim of credit or debit card fraud, contact NCCU or your card holder right away.
