We are also bringing technologies and tools to our division that will make our work easier, more efficient and more modern. We are bringing in mobile technology that will help us better deliver water service to our customers. We are reducing paperwork to speed up the way we do things. We are streamlining processes to make our work smarter. These are all exciting changes that will make us a better organization, help us lead the water industry and help make our relationship with our customers stronger.

This year we will continue our journey toward our goals, but we can only achieve them with your support and continued effort. I thank you in advance for all that you will do to ensure our aspirations are realized.

Resourcefully yours, Laurent

Laurent CarrotVice President & General ManagerNew Jersey Operations

Dear Colleague:

As the first quarter of the new year comes to a close, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate you for your constant dedication to continuous excellent performance in 2015 and the first quarter of 2016. We are doing a lot of things right every day: we’re improving our EH&S culture, we’re implementing new processes and new technology that drive us toward delivering a better customer experience, we’re fixing more leaks in our network than ever before, we’re improving work and office spaces in all of our locations. The list could go on and on. These successes would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of so many of you.

While we still have some work to do, it is clear that our EH&S performance continues on the right path. I am particularly encouraged by the several “Doing It Right” examples and the formation of our multi-disciplinary committee that has focused on safe driving practices, an area that needs improvement. And overall I am encouraged that we are shifting the culture to one where we are all mindful of our responsibilities in this area. As always, please continue to make sure to wear appropriate safety gear, use common sense, apply good safety techniques and above all, remember what Benjamin Franklin once said - “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

take a safety break ― stretch

environment health & safety

Stretching Basics: • Use gentle forces and controlled movements• Never rock or bounce into or out of a stretch• Hold each stretch for 3-5 slow relaxing breaths• You may experience discomfort or tightness but discontinue if

you experience pain

Here are a few simple stretches to relax, recharge and refocus:

1. Neck Stretch – Gently bring your chin down to your chest as far as you can comfortable go. Hold. Bring the head back as far as it can go and hold. Straighten up and slowly bend to one side and hold. Next, slowly move it to the other side and hold.

2. Shoulder Warm Up (Arm Circles) – Start making small circles with the arms, rotating forward. Keep making the circles bigger until maximum size is obtained. Repeat making the circles with the arms rotating in the opposite direction.

3. Shoulder Rolls – Slowly roll your shoulders up, forward, down and back, making the largest circles you can comfortably make. Repeat 5 times. Next, roll the shoulders in the opposite direction for 5 rotations.

4. Lower Back Stretch – DO NOT TWIST performing this exercise. Standing with your feet about shoulder width apart, place your hands in the lumbar area of your back and stretch backward like you are looking at the ceiling. Hold. Slowly straighten out and bend forward at the hip joints, exaggerating and maintaining the arch in your lower back. Try to touch the floor. Hold.

Stretching helps prevent everything from injuries to everyday aches and pains so make a habit of stretching throughout the day!

Visit www.ergo-power.com for additional stretching and strengthening exercises.

Stretching increases your ability to perform everyday tasks at work, home and play. Warming up your body and stretching are very natural things to do, and there are many benefits to doing them.

Pre-shift stretching and warm-up exercises reduce the risk of injury, reduce fatigue and improves muscular balance, posture and coordination. Stretching also reduces stress – the perfect reason to stretch daily!

Below: Department supervisors set up a random checkpoint and distributed Awesome Awards to employees safely exiting the facility – seat belts fastened; no texting or cell phone use.

In an effort to build and enhance the safety culture in Hackensack and Haworth, SUEZ formed a multi-disciplinary team comprised of management and union personnel representing construction, customer service, meter shop, and maintenance departments together with members of the executive and health and safety teams. Members include Bill Foley, Jim Lagrosa, Greg Jordan, Stephen Morinho, Patty Bogosian, Danny Bruno, Mike Hlavaty and Laurent Carrot.

One of the safety culture team’s first initiatives was a “Buckle Up & Don’t Text and Drive” campaign. A message board was placed at the entry gate of Hackensack yard to remind employees about those two important safe driving actions. To further reinforce the messages and acknowledge employees who were “Doing It Right”, department supervisors set up a random checkpoint and distributed Awesome Awards to employees safely exiting the facility – seat belts fastened; no texting or cell phone use. Over 40 employees were recognized that day for their exemplary driving habits.

Secaucus interconnect leakDuring a routine inspection of a 16-inch pressure main at the Secaucus interconnection, a fairly large pinhole leak was discovered, with potential to blow into a full-fledged hole. The mechanical maintenance team responded to close the valve but after a thorough assessment of the situation, determined that the current conditions were unsafe to make the necessary repair. The crew returned the next day with the proper equipment and manpower to complete the job in a safe and efficient manner. Great job by the mechanical maintenance team!

safe work practicesThe true measure of an established safety culture is when employees do things the correct and safe way, even when no one is watching. During an unexpected visit by the management team, Lucille Kuchar, Highland Lakes field service worker, was found wearing all the correct PPE and applying safe work practices as she performed her job.

reaffirming our commitment to safety

environment health & safety

A joint recognition breakfast was held in December for the construction and distribution departments to celebrate their no lost time safety achievements.

Construction500 days with no lost time

Distribution 300 days with no lost time

At the breakfast, employees renewed their commitment to a safe and healthy workplace and voluntarily re-signed the pledge to perform their jobs in a safe manner with the goal of zero recordable accidents. The pledge highlights safe work practices and behaviors that foster a safety culture and environment.

“Our employees have truly embraced the Drive to Zero vision and recognize that every incident is preventable,” said Laurent Carrot, vice president and general manager. “By embracing this ideal, our safety performance has improved, as evident by the milestones achieved. Congratulations to the construction and distribution departments for continuing to uphold their commitment to safety. Keep up the good work!”

dam safety upgrade completeNew Jersey operations kicked off 2016 with the completion of a major safety upgrade to the Woodcliff Lake Dam. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to officially wrap up the project.

The $26 million project that began in spring of 2014 will ensure that the dam infrastructure meets stringent safety standards. In addition to raising two reservoir embankments, the dam’s low level outlet has been rehabilitated, a wall at the base of the dam that will detain additional storm water has been constructed and a new auxiliary spillway that can safely pass intense storms has been installed.

“The safety of our infrastructure is paramount,” said Laurent Carrot, vice president and general manager. “With powerful storms like Sandy and Irene occurring more frequently in recent years, this upgrade will further protect the integrity of the dam. The infrastructure will now be able to withstand a storm event equivalent to nearly four times the intensity of Tropical Storm Floyd. Congratulations to all the employees that worked tirelessly to complete this project on time and within budget.”

Detecting a leak underground is no easy task. State-of-the-art technology and equipment, such as stethophons, enables employees to hear underground sounds and identify leaks within the distribution system. Specialized training is needed in order to effectively operate the equipment and devices.

In an effort to identify and reduce non-revenue water, the system maintenance department held a training course conducted by the vendor of these specialized devices. Over the course of three days, employees learned how to run diagnostic tests on the equipment and participated in hands-on training activities out in the field.

“In 2014, our leak detection accuracy rate was 90%, reducing non-revenue water within the area by 2.4 billion gallons – saving water, energy and chemical costs,” said John Libitz, manager of systems maintenance. “Last year we increased our average accuracy rate to 94% and are looking to improve our record even more, which is why this training is so critical. Not only did the field training result in the discovery of three leaks, but I’m happy to report that during the month of July 2015, our employees achieved a 100% leak detection accuracy rate, which meant that every excavation for the month resulted in a successful repair!”

lighting our way to a sustainable future

Below: Larry Gelok and Anthony Bariso replace fluorescent light bulbs with energy-efficient LED lighting.

As part of SUEZ’ continuing efforts to increase efficiency and sustainability, an energy task force was established to study the use of LED (Light Emitting Diodes) lighting. LEDs are solid state light bulbs which are extremely energy-efficient and can last up to 10-times longer than compact fluorescent light bulbs. The task force compared kilowatt-hour (kWh) electricity consumption with each bulb and found that LEDs reduced energy consumption by 33%.

Once the pilot study was successfully completed, our electrical support team began replacing over 400 fluorescent light bulbs in Haworth with LED lighting. Occupancy sensor controls were also installed in various areas, further reducing energy consumption by 11% on average.

Employees have reported that the LED lighting gives off a much more pleasing quality of light and there is less heat build-up in a room, thus helping to reduce air conditioning costs as well as electricity.

LED lighting has other benefits as well. LEDs are mercury free, are more durable than regular incandescent bulbs since they do not have a filament, and can last up to 20 years before a replacement is needed.

innovation stories

In a continuing effort to streamline workflow and improve the efficiency of work force management, the company’s Transmission and Distribution (T&D) group is currently reforming its processes and developing a new workforce and work order software application.

PRISM 2017 (Process Improvement System Maintenance) will allow construction, distribution, central service bureau (CSB), and systems office to standardize job types and materials, improve job scheduling and resource allocation, and establish clear definitions for emergencies.

“This new workforce management tool will allow the T&D group to better plan, prepare and execute the overall management of work flow on an annual, quarterly, weekly and daily basis,” said Doug Reger, project manager. “By improving and standardizing job types and materials, PRISM 2017 will allow resources to be adjusted to support and execute work orders as well as decrease the backlog of work. It will also allow for better performance tracking and feedback, thus creating the opportunity for effective training and the development of new technologies. Once fully implemented, the goal of PRISM 2017 is to foster best practices and efficiencies that will help us better serve our customers.”

Over a year ago, Laurent Carrot challenged employees to be innovative, both in thought and leadership, and improve processes by developing new technologies and solutions for our business. Resource recently sat down with Dennis Reycraft, senior technical analyst, to discuss how posing one simple question evolved into a revolutionary way to partner with stakeholders and optimize energy consumption for the company.

RN: Tell us a little bit about your background and briefly describe your current role.

DR: Prior to joining the company in 2002, I worked in the financial services industry. In my current role as the senior technical analyst, my primary responsibility is the day-to-day energy cost management for operations in New Jersey. I am also the administrator for the eOPS database system, which allows employees to use SCADA information.

There are 80+ locations within the division’s footprint that require energy to operate the equipment necessary for us to do business. This includes the Haworth Treatment Plant, which utilizes about 65% of all the energy needs and costs each year. My job is to manage energy consumption at all of the locations and reduce costs wherever possible. I like to compare what I do to a round of golf – the object is to get the lowest score (cost) possible.

RN: Being that energy is a huge component of water operations, how can you reduce costs?

DR: After the northeast blackout in August 2013, we partnered with Talen (formerly Pennsylvania Power and Light) and became a “co-gen” location – we provide Talen with natural gas which it converts to electricity. Talen, along with our emergency kerosene powered generators, allows the company to operate off of the power grid in the event of a power failure.

When Laurent challenged employees to rethink the way we do things every day and find efficiencies to improve processes, a light bulb went off in my head. I wondered if there was a more cost-effective way to manage our relationship with Talen and capitalize upon the use of very cost-favorable natural gas to generate electricity and offset high electric costs beyond the traditional strategy in place.

RN: How exactly does that work?

DR: In the past, we typically used this reciprocal process only for a specific amount of time during the summer months, requiring the connection to be switched on and off daily. By simply asking to re-evaluate the start/stop plan, a decision was made to keep the generators on all week, benefiting both parties involved.

RN: This seems to be a win-win for all involved and a great example of how sustainable business is good business.

DR: Yes, it certainly is. Energy management is no longer a seasonal process in terms of cost – it is now looked at hour by hour, rather than month to month. The summer of 2015 was the first full summer that these generators were utilized in a fashion more accustomed to what they were designed for and the initial results are fantastic. Instead of meeting budgetary expectations, we finished very favorable for all four summer months. The generators are phenomenal tools which open emergency supplemental power and economic opportunities throughout the year.

As an environmental resource company, our job is to effectively manage resources for our customers. Optimizing energy consumption and costs while promoting clean energy is good business. Strategically collaborating with stakeholders to increase profitability is good business. Improving processes to reduce costs is good business. The more we can move away from being over-consumers of energy, the greater our impact will be in creating a more sustainable world.

Susan Nativo of Hackensack wanted to report the exemplary customer service she received from Lenny Conticelli, Jim Schneider, and Paul Smith. She is 90 years old and owns a retail property in Hackensack that needed a meter installed for a hair salon. She said that all three men treated her with respect and it was a pleasure to work with them. She wanted to let the company to know how great she thinks Lenny, Jim and Paul are and hoped the company would recognize their superb efforts!

It takes a team effort to operate and maintain a 200 million gallon per day water treatment facility and ensure that over 200,000 customers receive high-quality water 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The responsibility of operational activity, including the maintenance and effectiveness of the distribution system, lies with the licensed operator.

In New Jersey, the program to certify operators of water supply and wastewater systems is the oldest in the nation, dating back to 1918. Becoming and continuing to be a licensed operator is not easy. It requires training, multiple state examinations, and continuing education courses.

Operator licenses are classified into four levels, based upon the size of the water or wastewater system. A level one certification is needed for the smallest or least complex systems and a level four is required for the largest and/or most complex systems, serving populations equivalent to 50,001 or more people.

Based upon the requirements, achieving a level three or four operator license is no small feat. New Jersey is proud of all employees who are continuing their education and seeking to obtain advanced degrees or certifications.

There are many challenges working outdoors. Construction work is difficult enough under normal weather conditions, but extreme temperatures make it even more daunting, especially when working to repair an underground water main.

As temperatures take a dive and days become shorter, it can be difficult to stay motivated and positive. No one knows that better than members of the construction department. “On average, the construction team repairs approximately 170 main breaks from January to March – that’s a lot of time out in the cold,” remarked Jeff Picinich, supervisor. “No matter what the conditions, our team is committed to getting the job done, safely and efficiently, and hopefully learning something new with each repair.”

“We all share the same goal, whether union or management, to provide safe, reliable drinking water to our customers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” continued Anthony Bruno, supervisor. “Our customers count on us and our job as supervisors is to lead by example. To be successful and earn the respect of your team, you need to be out there together, as one unit, despite the weather conditions or time of day. Those that work outside in the cold know how to keep warm but sometimes need a little inspiration to stay motivated. It could be as simple as buying coffee for the crew to keep everyone smiling.”

community connections

With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, research shows that volunteering is not only good for others; it’s good for you too! The benefits of volunteering are numerous. The right match can help you learn a new skill, improve your health, create new friendships and even advance your career.

pay it forward – volunteer

Stephen Cirino, systems inspector, understands the true value of volunteering. For almost 40 years, Steve has donated his time and talent to numerous company-sponsored service initiatives as well as community projects within his own backyard. “I am an emergency medical technician (EMT)

for my hometown of River Edge, I am a member of the Knights of Columbus, and serve as a Eucharistic Minister with my wife at church. My newest service endeavor is volunteering with Life Choice Hospice where I spend time visiting homebound, terminally-ill patients.”

Steve says he gets a lot of satisfaction from volunteering and tries to give back as much as he can. “I volunteer to help those in need – it’s as simple as that. When you volunteer, you feel good because you are helping others, and others feel good because they’re getting the help they need. It’s a win-win situation.”

According to Steve, everyone can find time to volunteer. The key is to choose something you are passionate about and love to do. “I am proud to work for a company that cares about giving back to the community and offers a variety of opportunities to serve. I am very grateful for the support of my supervisors who allow me to partake in company initiatives. My number one advice for anyone interested in volunteering is to find an activity or project that interests you and fits your schedule. Volunteering works best if you choose an area you love.”

For Cirino, that means working with children and helping with improvement/clean-up projects for non-profit organizations like Habitat for Humanity, Spectrum for Living, and Bergen Family Center. “Clean-up and painting projects are so rewarding because you are able to

There are numerous volunteer opportunities available. The key is to find something you would enjoy and are capable of doing. It’s also important to make sure that your commitment matches the organization’s needs. The following questions can help you narrow your options:

• What causes are important to you?

• Would you like to work with adults, children, or the elderly?

• Do you prefer to work outside or indoors?

• Do you prefer to work alone or as part of a team?

• What skills can you bring to a project?

immediately see the impact of your hard work and know that you have directly affected someone’s life for the better.”

Steve says everyone can find the time to volunteer and recommends a few simple rules to make the most of the experience:

• Look for activities that fit into your schedule.

• Find an activity you’re passionate about.

• Ask a friend to volunteer with you.

• Tell others about ways they can help.

• Before volunteering for a company project, be sure to get your immediate supervisor’s approval.

“What’s great about volunteering is that

when you do find your niche, it can be the most satisfying experience in the world.”

Volunteer opportunities are available monthly for New Jersey employees. To learn more about how you can participate, please contact Sonja Clark or Lori Murray.
