I trust you had a restful Christmas and New Year. As always we have a busy term ahead with lots going on, not least our performance of the Little Shop of Horrors between 5-7 February. Good luck to the year 9s who have exams in the upcoming week as they start to turn their minds to GCSE option choices in February. Good luck also to our year 11s as they head out on college interviews. Year 11s begin their pre-public exams on the 9th February. This is the final formal exam practice for the students who will have exams in many of their subjects in a concentrated time period. We are running revision skills workshops on 12 January for the year group to help them prepare for these exams. Please encourage your child to organise a revision timetable, and make use of the strategies available to them to help them be ready for the public exams in the summer. Finally, later this month your child will be coming home with a survey about the school. I am asking staff, students and parents to give their views on what we do well and what we can do to improve. Being new to my role this will help me set the direction of the school for the future. I would appreciate you taking the time to complete the survey as the more responses I receive, the more informed I will be. Each morning the athletes meet with a physiologist, in this case Gareth Turner, who assesses how each has slept and how they feel, and whether they are fully ready for the rigours of training. “Part of our job is to step out of the science world and explain to them why we are doing this in lay-terms, which is difficult,” Gareth says. “If they get a better understanding of it all then they’re more likely to buy into it. So the education with athletes and coaches is important and part of our role is to show them why it’s going to be beneficial.” Quote from - The Independent (Sport). Primary update, January 6, 2015

Department for Education Approves Our Primary School Proposal

Our proposal to become an all-through school by the addition of a nursery and primary has been approved by the Departmentfor Education (DFE).

We received the good news in a letter from the DFE’s Dominic Herrington, Regional Schools Commissioner, South East andSouth London. He wrote: "I am pleased to confirm that I have approved the Cavendish School's application to include a primary

provision for September 2015 as set out in your business case proposal submitted to the Education Funding Agency."

We are obviously delighted to receive this seal of approval from the Department For Education as it is a significant milestone inour journey to become an all-through school. The final decision will be made at an East Sussex County Council Planning

Committee meeting, which is likely to take place in February.

We believe that our proposal for an all-through school at Cavendish will provide high quality and sustainable education for ouryoung people. There has been considerable support for our plans from the community and many parents have already registered

their children to start reception this coming September.

It is planned that the two reception classes will be accommodated in part of the existing school building, which we will adapt tomake suitable for primary children. They will move into the new building in September 2016.

We are holding an open morning on Saturday 10th January for parents who are interested in finding out more about the school.Sally Franceschi, Head of Primary Designate, will be speaking at 10am and 11.30am about our plans.

Please do come along – we look forward to welcoming you.
