Letter from the President-Elect
Dear Fellow Chamber Members,
We have enjoyed the wonderful holiday season and now look forward to the
upcoming year with the snow and cold but also the excitement and expecta-
tion of what the next 12 months holds for our businesses as we seek to im-
prove on last year. I have the additional role of being President of your
Chamber this year. I take it knowing what an honor it is to have been se-
lected by my peers, but in addition realizing the responsibilities it involves
in striving to better the services which are provided to you.
I would like to thank Ken Douthit last year’s President for his time, direction, involvement and
energy which he provided to the Chamber Board and the organization itself during his term.
I am looking forward to working closely with Molly Gebler, Executive Director and Helen
Kuznik, Membership and Marketing Coordinator, to ensure that we continue to provide many
benefits to our members from the pop-up workshops, Chamber breakfasts and lunches, to the
networking opportunities at the Meet Me at 5 gatherings and exciting new concept this year with
the Chagrin Valley Community Expo as well as the other events held throughout the year. These
two ladies are dedicated employees who never seem to tire in being able to not only build on
what we have but to come up with new ways to provide benefits to members. They are the con-
stant and make our Chamber the truly vibrant and growing organization which it is.
When I was asked if I was interested in becoming a member of the Board a number of years ago
by Jim Nerponi, a former President, as in addition to having my office in Chagrin Falls I was
serving as a Bainbridge Township Trustee. I came on board with a little different perspective
than most regarding the impact of the Chamber. I saw it not only from business point of view but
the broader community as a whole. A strong actively involved Chamber makes for a better com-
munity. The Chamber helps local businesses grow and that results in a healthier community.
Chamber members not only have their businesses in the Valley but live here too.
As we begin the new year, there is much to do and goals to be set for what we wish to accom-
plish this year. My goal as President of this organization is to get members involved. It is not
my Chamber or the Board’s Chamber or Molly and Helen’s Chamber, but it is your Chamber.
We are here to ensure that you take advantage of what it has to offer so that your business and
community can benefit.

The Chagrin River flows through the eastern edge of the South Chagrin Reservation. The forest
in the reservation has many fine examples of hemlock, white oak, red oak, and shagbark hick-
ory trees, as well as beech and sugar maples. This area is well-known for its brilliant fall colors.
The outdoor sculpture known as "Squaw Rock" in South Chagrin Reservation was carved by
artist and blacksmith Henry Church in 1885. Church walked through the Chagrin River at night
to sculpt this large sandstone boulder. Included in the carving is a quiver of arrows (with the
four phases of the moon), a giant serpent, an eagle, a woman with a shell behind her
(reminiscent of Botticelli's Venus), a dog, skeleton, and a baby in a papoose. While many have
speculated the meaning of the work, it is not known what message Mr. Church actually wanted
to convey through this piece. Other smaller carvings can be found on the river side of the
rock, although it is uncertain whether they were carved by Henry Church.
The reservation is located in Bentleyville, Solon and Moreland Hills, and also features an
Arboretum, Polo Field and many interesting trails to explore and year-round outdoor educa-
tion programming for all ages. (www.clevelandmetroparks.com)
Join us at this lunch and hear about all that’s going on in the Metroparks located right in our
backyards.
