In This Report

When we survey the amazing breadth and profoundly exciting

characteristics of research across the Cornell campus, we see

large-scale projects that promise to improve the well-being of our

national and global societies; we see smaller ingenious research projects that

could lead to the next breakthrough in any number of areas; and we see scholarly

work that supports and enhances the spirit of humanity. When we aggregate

all the pieces, we have the essence of Cornell’s preeminence in research.

THE FOUNDATIONOF CORNELL’SRESEARCH LEADERSHIP

To continue to lead, Cornell mustalso continue to renew its faculty.The strong success of our recentefforts at renewal is confirmed byCornell’s excellent cadre of youngfaculty who won many nationalawards over the past year, includ-ing a notable number of NationalScience Foundation Early CareerDevelopment awards.

Cornell faculty continue to increasethe university’s external fundingfor top-flight research and secureour leadership position in academicresearch. In FY 2009 Cornell wassecond among the nation’s re-search universities in total NationalScience Foundation (NSF) researchawards. Prior to the AmericanRecovery and Reinvestment Act(ARRA) stimulus funding, Cornellhad a 5 percent increase in

research funding on the Ithacacampus for FY 2009, with amarked increase in nonprofit andfoundation funding. A Bill andMelinda Gates Foundation’s awardof $26.8 million established aCornell global partnership to fightstem rust, a lethal wheat diseasethat threatens global food security.The NSF’s renewal and increase infunding for the National Nano-technology Infrastructure Network(NINN) for the next five yearsconfirms the impact of this net-work led by Cornell.

By the end of 2009, Cornell re-searchers on the Ithaca and NewYork City campuses had receivedmore than $140 million in stimulusfunding, garnering exceptionalsuccess across areas with the im-mediate potential to address someof the nation’s urgent needs. Wereceived $17.5 million from theDepartment of Energy, along withadditional funds from New York

State, for an Energy FrontierResearch Center: the EnergyMaterials Center at Cornell (EMC2).Cornell’s Ithaca campus and WeillCornell Medical College, partneringwith the University of Buffalo,received $13 million from the Na-tional Cancer Institute to fund theCenter for the Microenvironmentand Metastasis, which bringsphysicians and engineers togetherto gain a deeper understanding ofthe complexity of cancer. NSF’syearlong review of the CornellHigh Energy Synchrotron Sourceand Energy Recovery Linac R&Dprogram culminated in NSF’sNational Science Board approvingup to $125 million in funding forCHESS and ERL over the nextfour years.

Cornell continues to lead in researchand technology development, in-cluding computer hardware andinformation sciences; the abilityto manipulate, understand, and

tacticsand actions that will enhance our researchproductivity and enable Cornell to excel inareas defined by the faculty;

mechanismsby which new initiatives of the faculty withthe prospect of winning external resourcesand yielding an impact can be addressed asthey emerge;

a way to usethe resources we have—which are limited—as effectively and efficiently as possible,taking our best practices in organizing sharedfacilities, administrating research, andstimulating and supporting interdisciplinaryinitiatives and implementing them success-fully and appropriately across campus; and

a strategyto identify Cornell’s best areas and determinehow to make those areas even better, with-out detracting from other areas.

To Reimagine

As we look toward Cornell’sfuture, my vision for Cornellresearch is straightforward.I want the Cornell researchenterprise to have

communicate data; and nano-science and nanotechnology,rapidly evolving fields that arenow playing a fast-growing rolein medical technology. Cornellleads in research on personaldecision making and lifestyle inhuman health, including suchissues as obesity and smoking,which extract steep personal andsocietal costs. The impact of Cor-nell’s work in genomics toucheson all areas of the life sciences.Analysis of genetic informationthat was unattainable 10 yearsago—now available at ever-decreasing costs—is yieldingknowledge and insights that willreshape biology in the comingdecades. Data-intensive sciences,high-tech telescopes, energy, andthe environment are all areas inwhich Cornell leads.

ENDORSING EXCELLENCE

We recognize that Cornell hasexcellent strengths across thecampus—and it’s exciting. Wewant to support all of ourstrengths, based on our abilityto attain external resources, andexcel in these areas. This meansthat we must continue to advo-cate for federal and nonprofitobjectives that align with societaland scientific needs and opportu-nities. Whether our research is inthe medical sciences where weexpect to improve human healthor in astronomy where we arelooking back to the beginning oftime, leading galactic surveys, andexploring other planets; in the lifesciences where research is drivenby curiosity (why does this littleanimal do this?) or by concern forhuman impact on the environment;in the social sciences where weseek to understand and improve

the human world; or in scholarlywork that uncovers new facts abouthistory and the arts or otherwiseenriches human life, we strive forexcellence and to deliver the re-search that makes the difference.

By recognizing and supportingexcellence, Cornell has been, andstill is, at the forefront of trendswhere we can make significantcontributions to meeting societalneeds and enriching humanity.I aim to extend our support ofexcellence and to ensure, to theextent possible, that Cornell fac-ulty have the facilities, particularlyshared facilities, and tools they

need to excel. These facilitiesinclude CHESS and the ERL, newand updated telescopes, life sci-ences core facilities, materialscharacterization facilities, theCornell NanoScale Facility (CNF),social sciences survey tools anddatabases, scholarly collectionsfor the humanities, cost-effectivehigh-performance computingfacilities of the Center for Ad-vanced Computing, and others,as the best ideas and initiativesof the faculty and other researchersmaterialize. Supporting the best

is a dynamic process, and wedepend on the collective wisdomand energy of the faculty forguidance.

TO FORECASTOR NOT TO FORECAST

We have just experienced asubstantial increase in federalfunding for research, but howmuch of it will be sustained isuncertain. We expect the NSFbudget to grow, while the NationalInstitutes of Health (NIH) budgetprojections show only modest in-creases. Cornell is a top recipientof funding from these agencies.How quickly and how success-fully the economy recovers andgrows will determine how muchindustrial and other types offunding Cornell can obtain overthe next few years. As we lookahead, we cannot accurately predictwhat will be the new importanttrends or next big opportunitiesfor funding. Energy, the environ-ment, and sustainability willcertainly continue to receiveprominent attention, as well asour long-standing areas of strengthin the physical sciences, engineer-ing, information sciences, and lifesciences, both basic and applied.Our strategy will continue to beto support the best ideas of thefaculty, rather than trying to pre-dict and plan for specific areas ofgrowth. I encourage faculty to thinkpositively, but also realistically,about starting new adventures.We are confident that Cornellwill continue to lead.

Since the American Recovery and ReinvestmentAct (ARRA)—also known as the economic stimuluspackage—was enacted in February 2009, Cornellhas received funding for an array of projects,from research on tuberculosis and energy to astudy on poverty. Cornell’s ARRA-supportedresearch will not only lead to innovations anddiscoveries, but also create and retain jobs,upgrade research facilities and equipment, andtrain graduate students—and thereby contributeto economic growth.

A Cornell engineer invented a newgenetic-engineering technique, aprotein readout method for cells,paving the way for creating andcataloging disease-specific antibodiesin the lab and revolutionizing anti-body-based drugs for such diseasesas Alzheimer’s and cancer.

Cornell researchers created an ultra-fast oscilloscope that can plot thewaveform of an optical signal with aresolution of less than a trillionth of asecond. Applications include analyzingintermittent glitches in fiber-opticcommunications and observing suchfast-moving events as chemical reac-tions or laser fusion.

Cornell neurosurgeons at Weill CornellMedical Center performed the world’sfirst intra-arterial cerebral infusionof Avastin (bevacizumab) directly intoa patient's malignant brain tumor.This novel technique, a combinationof the latest in drug treatment andrevolutionary delivery procedure, mayexpose the cancer to higher doses ofthe drug therapy, sparing the patientcommon side effects of receivingthe drug intravenously throughoutthe body.

HOWARD RIINANEUROLOGICAL SURGERY/NEUROLOGY/RADIOLOGY

Three start-ups based on Cornell technologies werelaunched in New York State in 2009:

Reparo Therapy is developing DNA repair-enhancing ingredients and productsfor consumer and clinical use. The technology is based on a discovery atWeill Cornell Medical College of a mechanism that improves the ability ofcells to repair DNA damages caused by UV or chemical carcinogens.

Geneweave Biosciences is developing rapid molecular diagnostic tests forinfectious diseases. The invention is based on bacterial detection technologyfrom the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Microbiology.

InFlora is commercializing a collection of unique woody ornamental plantsdeveloped at Cornell. Woody ornamentals are popular for defining outdoorliving spaces, and the flowers are used in creative floral arrangements.

SOME RESULTS OF CORNELL RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP

Using a lump of graphite, a piece of scotch tape, and a siliconwafer, Cornell scientists—including physics graduate students Arend van derZander and Jonathan Alden and former graduate student Scott Bunch (nowfaculty at the University of Colorado)—created the world’s thinnest balloon, oneatom thick, that is strong enough to contain gases under several atmospheres ofpressure without popping. This balloon-like membrane is ultrastrong, leakproof,and impermeable to even nimble helium atoms. The research could lead to avariety of new technologies, from novel ways to image biological materials insolution to techniques for studying the movement of atom or ions throughmicroscopic holes.

Cornell researchers found that retireesor older people, sometimes called“grey gold,” who move to ruralareas often have a positive impacton local economies, but they alsodrive up housing prices and can haveother negative effects. For example,affordable housing becomes lessavailable to such service professionalsas teachers and nurses. They publishedthe findings in their book, RuralRetirement Migration (Springer 2008).

A Cornell poet was nominated fora National Book Award in poetry,chosen for her 2009 work, OpenInterval (University of PittsburghPress), a collection of poems drawingon the intersections of astronomyand mathematics, history, literature,and lived experience.

LYRAE VAN CLIEF-STEFANONENGLISH

Cornell researchers provided a newinsight into how receptors on cellsurfaces turn off signals from thecell’s environment. The findings haveimplications for better understandingcancer, AIDS, neurodegenerative dis-orders, and other illnesses, becausesuch diseases can result when receptorsgo awry by failing to turn off, afunction known as down-regulation.

Weill Hall, one of only six university lab-oratory buildings with Leadership in Energyand Environmental Design “gold” certifica-tion, is a cutting-edge life sciences facilityfor interdisciplinary research and teachingin the biological, physical, engineering,computational, and social sciences. Alsohousing the Weill Institute for Cell andMolecular Biology, it opened in 2008.
