Excerpts from Mrs. Kolawole’s Speech
Good evening distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I welcome you all to this
special event organised for teachers and parents to meet and interact. The Regent
Secondary School is one big family of teachers, parents, staff and, of course, the
children. We all work together to give the students a well-rounded education,
which gives a firm foundation for their future endeavours.
Why Regent? When we were looking for a school for our children, we spoke to
some of our friends for recommendations. We got various reviews for several
schools but something stood out about their opinions of The Regent Secondary
School…Without going into details, it was obvious to us that there was
something they [The Regent Secondary School] were doing right…which is why we have had three children here
from the early years.
Real education is about getting equipped for life-long learning and that is what the children here acquire in copious
quantities. The amount of personal discoveries they are guided to make through personal and group projects,
essays, presentations have been very effective.
As parents and teachers, we must effectively engage with the children, to ensure that they optimize their learning
experiences. It is also important to monitor the children in and out school to help them maintain focus and stay on
track.
Thank you and God bless.
Mrs. Folake Kolawole.

V ibrance, enthusiasm, delectable food, wonderful music, what a night! For our theme night in El-Kanemi, we
chose to represent the Moroccan tradition and culture. The dining hall was wonderfully decorated with so
many intricate Moroccan designs and ornaments.
The night started off with a whole hostel dance in which we showcased our colourful Moroccan dresses. We
stunned the audience with our vivacity and great music. The food we served was mouth-watering. For starters, we
served (Harira) a Moroccan chicken soup, which was actually so delicious that one of the judges had to take some
away with him. For our main course, we had an option of Oriental rice with Lamb Tagine or couscous and
vegetable with Lamb Tagine. Dessert was a Moroccan fruit salad. Moroccans are well-known for their festivals,
so we chose to present the Festival of Roses. We delivered an accurate representation of this festival, sharing
roses with everyone and spreading rose petals across the room. Our host, Minaal Baba-Ahmed, brought the whole
show together as the compere, a role she did very well. Some other highlights of the night were the PowerPoint
presentation, which I compiled, the belly dancers and trio dance by Fatima Tumsah, Princess Onuegbu and Zoni-
Zoni Robert, the quiz in which Oduduwa Hostel won 1,000,000 El-Kanemi Dollars, and the National Anthem,
sung by Halima Umar.
The judges were left breathless after our presentations and we received very high scores from them. Our
Moroccan night was a huge success and we’re all so pleased about the way it turned out. It took a great deal of
energy and work to put everything together and to get everyone to participate but we pulled through at the end.
Amina Marafa, our Hostel Captain, and our hostel parents really put in their best efforts to make everything work.
We have set the bar really high for other hostels. So, the other hostels had better watch out!

O n Tuesday, 18th of October, 2016, Year 8 students undertook a Science excursion. At 9:55 a.m., we arrived
at our first destination, the Sarius Palmetum and Botanical Garden. There, we were divided into four
groups. In my group a pleasant lady, Miss Rose, was our tour guide. She showed us many types of Palms. They
included the following palm trees: Champagne Bottle (Hyophorbe Langenicoulis), Date (Phoenix dactylifera),
Fijifan (Pritchardia pacifica), Foxtail (Wodyetia bifurcata), Triangular (Dypsis lecaryi), the Royal (Roystonea
regia) and Chinese Fan/Fountain (Livistona chinensis). We also saw the Cannonball Tree (Couroupita
guianensis). Then after a snack of cake, we left for Park and Zoo.
At 11:51 a.m. we arrived at the Park and Zoo. We also had tour guides there. My group’s tour guide, Mr Idris,
showed us around the Zoo. We saw many animals such as Olive Baboons (Papio Anubis), Monkeys (Macaca
fascicularis), Horses (Equus laballus), African Rock Pythons (Python sebae), African Buffalo (Syncerus laffer),
Crested Porcupines (Histrix cristata), Ostriches (Struthio camelus) and many others.
We arrived back at the school campus at 1:23 p.m. and that ended a great trip. I want to thank Mrs Ogunlowo and
the other staff who made this possible. I can’t wait for our next school trip.

G ate Opening Times at Pick-Up: In order to help facilitate an orderly system, when collecting your children at
the end of the school day, please note the following gate opening times will apply from 31st October:
Monday 4.15pm
Tuesday-Thursday 5.15pm
Friday 1.15pm
From Tuesday to Thursday any child who is not involved in booster classes or after-school activities may be
collected from 4.00pm. Please park outside the school gates and come in to collect your child.
Unfortunately, I need to remind all parents that your child should be picked up promptly once the school day has
finished. We have observed an increasing number of children being left to wait for extended periods at the end of the
school day. This must stop, once we resume after the half-term break. We are aware that sometimes exceptional
circumstances occur which prevent parents from arriving at school on time. If this is the case, please call the school
receptionist to explain, so that appropriate arrangements can be made for the supervision of your child until you
arrive.
Late Arrivals: Please remember that you must contact the school receptionist with a valid reason, if your child is
going to arrive late to school in the morning. The Security Team have been asked to turn away students who arrive
late, if the school receptionist has not been given prior notice.
Early Drop-off: Following a recent Coffee Morning, some parents of the School expressed a wish to be able to drop
off their children earlier than 7.30 a.m. each morning. This is a request the School is willing to consider and will be
discussed next term. In order to get an idea of possible numbers, kindly contact the school receptionist, if you are
interested in dropping your child at school from 7.00 a.m. each morning.
SCHOOL SECURITY

Checkpoint Results: Parents of Year 10 students are advised that
their children’s Checkpoint results from last session have been issued
together with mid-term reports. We apologise for the delay in issuing
these results; unfortunately, they were received late from the British
Council.
