I recently came across the story of Hugh

Sawyer, a man in his thirties who lives in a

ditch in the woods of

Oxfordshire, England. As

Mort Crim explains, his

life is not easy. He has

only a few items and

sleeps under a tarp.

Attempted muggings

have forced him to

change locations several

times. It is not the life

you think a graduate of

Oxford University Law

School would be living.

So how then, does

Sawyer find himself

in this precarious

situation?

The truth is that

Sawyer did not fall on

bad times at all.

In fact, he maintains a

well-paying, full-time

job at the prestigious

Sotheby’s auction

house. Indeed, he had

the means to live among

his friends in one

of London’s ritziest

neighborhoods. But instead, Sawyer opted to

live in a ditch in the woods - for one whole

year.

His mission: to prove to himself and

others that it is possible to live a full and

meaningful life without the comforts and

conveniences that we have all come to take

for granted in the modern era. Sawyer has no

television, no refrigerator or freezer, no

furniture and no roof. But what he does have

is a beautiful view of the outdoors and a front

seat for watching the seasons change before

his very eyes.

While I admit Sawyer’s approach seems

quite extreme for most, the point here must

not be overlooked. Sawyer is trying to show

us that we may actually need much less than

we think to live a good and fulfilling life.

In his article “There’s Never Too Much

Stuff for Self-Storage”, John Austin writes that

Americans have apparently run out of room

for all their belongings, even though the

average house now has 2330 square feet, up

55% from 1970. And this insatiable race for

space is propelling a $15 billion self-storage

industry whose shares

are now being traded by

many companies on

the New York Stock

exchange. The statistics

are staggering: 1 in 11

Americans now rent

self-storage space, up

from 1 in 17 a decade

ago. The lesson is

simple: we all just have

too much stuff!

As I watched my

wife Susan pack her

suitcase last month in

preparation for her one

week trip to Israel - I got

to thinking: what would

it be like if we each had

to put our most

precious possessions in

just one suitcase? Could

we do it? And with the

airline weight limit set at

50 pounds per bag, I

know that I consider

more seriously than ever

before exactly what I

need and what I don’t need to pack each

time I travel. In the same way we should all

ask ourselves: what are the most important

things in our lives that we would and would

not be willing to give up?

Not surprisingly, our tradition has

something to say in this realm, for we learn

throughout Jewish moral and ethical

teachings that so much more important than

the accumulation of things is the

accumulation of mitzvot and the opportunity

to make a sincere and authentic difference in

other people’s lives.

Consider this story a congregant recently

forwarded to me: One day, a poor boy who

was selling goods door to door to pay his way

through school, found he had only one thin

dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he

would ask for a meal at the next house.

However, he lost his nerve when a lovely

young woman opened the door. Instead of a

meal he asked only for a drink of water but

instead she brought him a glass of milk. He

drank it very slowly, and then asked, “How

much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me

anything,” she replied. “My mother has

taught me never to accept any payment for

kindness.”

He said, “Then I thank you from the

bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left

that house, he not only felt stronger

physically, but his faith in God and humanity

was stronger also. He had been ready to just

give up and die.

Many years later that same young

woman became critically ill. The local

doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to

the big city, where they summoned a

specialist to study her rare disease. Dr.

Howard Kelly was called in for the

consultation. When he heard the name of

the town that she came from, a strange light

filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went

down the hall of the hospital to her room.

Dressed in his doctors gown he went in to

see her. Dr. Kelly recognized her at once.

He quickly went back to the

consultation room determined to do his best

to save her life. From that day on he gave

special attention to her case. After a long

struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly

requested the business office to pass the final

bill to him for approval. He looked at it and

wrote something on the edge before the bill

was sent to her. She feared to open it, for she

was sure it would take the rest of her life to

pay it off. Finally she looked, and something

caught her attention on the side of the bill.

She read these words: “Paid in full - with one

glass of milk.” Signed, Dr. Howard Kelly.

In the coming months let us deeply

internalize this teaching as it begs us to focus

less on our own needless accumulation,

while zeroing in on helping someone else

who is truly in need. And in so doing, may

we recognize that each one of us has the

innate power to enhance our own lives by

reaching out and positively influencing the

life of a loved one, friend or even a stranger in

a way and with a depth that we never could

have imagined.

What Really Matters at the End of the Day?

Rabbi Joseph H. Krakoff

...we learn throughout

Jewish moral and ethical teachings

that so much more important than

the accumulation of things is the

accumulation of mitzvoth and the

opportunity to make a sincere

and authentic difference

in other people’s lives.

Remarks by President Brian M. Hermelin

When I sat down to summarize how my first year as President has gone, I sometimes feel like tackling health care reform would have been easier. This year has been one of transition and the beginning of a restructuring of a great institution. Our synagogue, like our community, has continued to face difficult economic times. As Larry so clearly and completely illustrated in his financial presentation, the pressure on dues revenue, tuition revenue coupled with the capital requirements from our aging facilities requires us to confront difficult decisions now, rather than kicking the can down the road to future generations of leadership. Before I go further on this point, I want to acknowledge the hard work, dedication and leadership that Larry Nemer has contributed this year for Shaarey Zedek. His financial presentations … in fact all of his presentations have made our board discussions on the most sensitive subjects, more fact based, thoughtful and comprehensive. I don’t know how we could be getting the work done that we are without your contributions. He and the other Officers, Steve Margolin, Mary Knoll, and Jon Aaron each make meaningful contributions to this congregation. Thank you for your friendship, insights and commitment. I also get great advice and counsel from the past Presidents, and I want to give a special mention to Bill Berman who continues to be an engaged and strong advocate for the future of Shaarey Zedek. The economic realities facing this

community and congregation may be difficult, but they also give rise and

opportunity to new ideas, new thinking and, yes, even greater risk-taking as we re-imagine who and what we must become in order to grow as a congregation. Because we no longer can afford to be complacent about the decisions we face at the shul, we can also be bolder in our visioning which will lead us to a brighter future. It is these realities that required us to make a very difficult, but ultimately necessary decision to end our Beth Hayeled program at Shaarey Zedek and combine our nursery school and early education program with a new

pre-school being launched next year by Hillel Day School. This decision was difficult, but ultimately, we believe will lead to a fantastic Jewish preschool education for our children. When we talk about combining our program with Hillel’s, we mean integrating our clergy into the school and into the lives of our the children attending that school. We mean that our Shabbat programs aimed at the nursery school aged children will be promoted in Hillel. Shaarey Zedek families choosing to attend the new Hillel pre-school will receive a great, and nurturing early Jewish education and will feel meaningfully connected to our congregation. They will find familiar faces on the faculty and see our clergy all of the time. Not only do members of Shaarey Zedek receive discounted dues when they attend Hillel preschool, Shaarey Zedek will be passing through some of the savings from not operating a

preschool on to those families in the form of additional tuition assistance. While this decision concerned a great number of our members (particularly those with children or grandchildren at Beth Hayeled), I am so proud of the work done at the board and with the parents to explain the decision and introduce the Hillel program to them. As of this week, there are approximately 40 Shaarey Zedek families currently enrolled at Hillel and we expect those numbers to continue to climb as we roll out our tuition assistance program. No discussion of Beth Hayeled would be complete without an acknowledgement of deep appreciation for Rena Weintraub and Rena Cohen. As we went through the process of deciding what to do about Beth Hayeled, we heard story after story from parents about the special kind of bond the parents and children have with them. We are so grateful for the years of service by them and the entire faculty and staff of our Beth Hayeled. Both Renas have been dedicated to instilling a love for Judaism and Shaarey Zedek to generations of our member families. We want to acknowledge them here tonight at the Annual Meeting and promise that we will be announcing a special event when we as a congregation can turn out to thank them and the rest of the faculty for all they have done for our Shaarey Zedek family. In deference to the economic realities facing the congregation, we decided not to have an annual fund raiser, but instead begin a series of events leading up to our 150th celebration in the year 2011. This year we expect to have a kick-off event in the fall, and we hope to get a wide and meaningful participation from the entire congregation. Our staff and clergy worked tirelessly this year to engage members in new ways and with new programming. Our weekend Chanukah Blowout was a great first start to having Shaarey Zedek known as the place to celebrate Chanukah the same way it is the place to celebrate Purim. We had great family turnouts culminated with the lighting of the giant

menorah on the south lawn. On a weekly basis, our Shabbat lunch program continues to grow and build community with support from Sisterhood and donors to our Shabbat funds at both campuses. In his second full year as Education Director, Rabbi Starr continues to turn around a program that had struggled the preceding few years. Families regularly tell us how much better our education program is and how much more energy we have at the religious school as a direct result of Rabbi Starr and Family Educator Megan Rappaport. This year we introduced Shabbat school on a few Saturdays. This program fills the building with children and their parents. We are pleased with the early feedback on that program and expect to see more Shabbat school programs in the coming year. We need and will be getting the word out about the great things going on in our religious school. This is where the majority of our school age children get their Jewish education, and this is where we need to be the very best we can be. Our clergy continue their commitment to excellence. This year Rabbi Krakoff has achieved two major milestones…first, he turned 40 years old this past Thursday, and second, this year Rabbi Krakoff marks his 13th year, his Bar Mitzvah year, as a rabbi at Shaarey Zedek. We will be honoring this milestone on a Shabbat for he and Susan here in Southfield on June 19th. Please join us for this important occasion. Cantor Finkelstein continues to delight our congregation with the finest musical compositions being chanted on any Bimah in this country. He continues to work with our youth choir to develop their talents and his duets with the children of the congregation are a highlight every high holiday. Additionally, his special musical programs bring out members and non-members alike in large numbers. Assistant Cantor Gutman is a steady force day in and day out in the congregation. Whether it be leading daily minyan, or chanting Torah or working with members to develop their davening skills, we appreciate all that you

do here in our shul. This year our Executive Director, Lori-Blumenstein-Bott completed her first year with us. She has energized and organized our synagogue and has led a staff that is so dedicated and creative. I can’t thank each one of you individually, but know that your hard work and commitment to Shaarey Zedek is appreciated by the clergy and members alike. Thank you. As most of you know by now, Rabbi Yanoff and Dava have accepted an offer to move back home to Philadelphia and he has accepted the position of rabbi at Temple Adath Israel. I will have additional comments about Rabbi Yanoff at the end of my remarks. However, I would like to use this opportunity to address the many questions that have been posed to me about our B’nai Israel center going back to the decision to close Beth Hayeled and which have increased in the wake of Rabbi Yanoff’s decision. First let me remind everyone of the serious financial challenges, which Larry outlined earlier. As I said here last year, and have reminded the board at every meeting, there are no easy answers to the problems facing our congregation. First and foremost, we need to do an examination of who we are, and who and what our community needs us to be and then make the decisions necessary to get us there. Accordingly, everything we presently do must be a part of that examination and on the table subject to review. Only after we engage in that aspect of the process can we answer the questions being asked about rabbinic staffing levels, the number and nature of services and facilities we support, and the kinds of programs we offer. As Rabbi Yanoff’s announcement is still fresh, we are just beginning this process. Clearly, this is a dialogue. The community that regularly attends services in Southfield has its own unique personality and traditions, as does the community that regularly attends West Bloomfield services. We know this is not a one-size fits all solution. The Board and Officers will be engaging in the

coming days and weeks with members from each community, along with Rabbis Krakoff, Yanoff and Starr to develop a “going forward” plan that makes sense for who we are and who we want to be. This will not be a purely financially motivated decision, but also, make no mistake, financial considerations and demographic considerations will play an important role in this process. We understand that there is some uncertainty here and we want to assure you that we will be diligent, thoughtful, as we develop the plans to move forward. Our over arching goal is to build our community at Shaarey Zedek … one where we can feel connected to our Judaism and to each other. I cannot stand up here and say that the toughest days are behind us. I can tell you that the leadership of this synagogue is committed to ideals and standards of the leaders that stood here in the years before us. In order to see that this synagogue continues its leadership in this community and in so many aspects of Jewish life, it is essential that we now address the decisions necessary to ensure that stable and strong future. We have a renewed focus on dues and dues management. In the coming weeks, you will see a simplified dues structure. We will have promotional dues rates for new members as well as premium categories for members who want to find a way do more for the shul. We have many donors who have graciously been paying double dues, but we have been remiss in seeking out more like minded and financially capable members. We are also going to get a better handle on dues and tuition assistance and work with the same system that Federation and the Day Schools use to determine financial aid. We have a new, and energized Endowment Board, led by past President Gregg Orley. For years our Endowment Board simply managed the assets donated twenty five years ago. Now we must reinvest in this shul and in our endowment so that the future

Todah Rabbah toRena Weintraub, Rena Cohen andOur Dedicated Beth Heyeled Staff With gratitude and deep appreciation we express our love to Beth Hayeled directors Rena Weintraub and Rena Cohen for all they have given us in their unyielding commitment and devotion to Shaarey Zedek. Rena Weintraub’s warmth, tenderness and huge, all-embracing hugs made us feel loved, protected and taken care of each and every day while Rena Cohen’s kindness and deep, abiding concern for the welfare and growth of our children made us feel calm and at ease. They are a part of faculty that has, for more than six decades, provided us and our children immeasurable gifts for which we will forever be grateful. To Rena and Rena; to every teacher and every member of the Beth Hayeled team; and to all who worked tirelessly in support of our preschool and its children over these last many years: todah rabbah. Thank you so, so much.

generations of synagogue families can find the comfort of community that so many of us have found here at Shaarey Zedek. Please know that when we reach out to you to discuss a current gift or testamentary gift, we do so with the recognition that it is incumbent on us as leaders to implement the plans that will ensure the long term growth of Shaarey Zedek. While the memory of Bill Davidson is still fresh for many of us, it gave us great comfort to know that he remembered Shaarey Zedek with a testamentary gift from his estate. We encourage you to remember our synagogue in your estate planning. We know many of you have given over the years, however, we need your support now more than ever. Friends, Shaarey Zedek has a proud tradition that is approaching 150 years in Detroit as one of the foundations of our Jewish community. Your leadership is committed to sustaining this legacy so that we celebrate our 150th with pride and look forward to inspiring generations more with a love for Judaism and community. On behalf of the Officers and the Board of Trustees, I want to thank you for your membership and support of this congregation. The changes we are making today, and the decisions we make tomorrow will provide us the stable platform to grow into a bright future. Thank you. Now, I want to return to Rabbi Yanoff. Since the day that he and Dava arrived here in Detroit, they have been a bright light in our congregation. We tried to overcome the pull of family in Philadelphia to keep you here with us. Understandably, but regrettably, it was not meant to be. While we look forward to your last two months here with us, we want to take this opportunity tonight to thank you sincerely for your six years with us and wish you, Dava and Aiden all the success and happiness in your new (and old) home. As I said in my e-mail to the congregation, we will pick an opportunity to invite the congregation to come and give you a proper farewell. However, let me just simply say thank you for all you have done for this congregation.

Dear Friends, Miracles can and do still happen. In July I have the blessing of traveling to Israel with teenagers from Shaarey Zedek and the Metro Detroit area as part of the Jewish

Federation’s Teen Mission to Israel. There we will commemorate on July 20 Tisha B’Av, the 9th day of the Hebrew month of Av. It is on that date tradition teaches that both the First and Second Temples were destroyed and that numerous calamities befell the Jewish People. Yet, on this terribly sad fast day in which the Book of Lamentations will be read, I will be in a modern, re-born State of Israel with

Jerusalem as its capitol. Miracles do happen. But, just as in ancient times, God expects us to meet Him (at least) half-way in order to bring about those miracles. Israel could not have been reborn without the blood, sweat and tears of thousands of chalutzim (pioneers) who labored the land. Our homeland could not have taken root again without the sacrifice, financial and otherwise, of millions of Jews worldwide—including and especially members of Congregation Shaarey Zedek. And Israel continues to exist in no small part because of people everywhere who support her politically, financially, educationally, and through visiting. We are partners in maintaining Israel as a modern-day miracle and we have to continue to work tirelessly on her behalf. Helping to link Israel to Metro Detroit is the Jewish Federation. The Federation gives millions annually to support Israel and Israelis and even more to help create miracles right here in our own backyard. Through the generosity of those who support Federation, not only are our Shaarey Zedek teenagers (and others) able to participate in the Teen Mission, but Shaarey Zedek receives thousands of dollars in scholarship monies for a variety of programs. Moreover, Federation continues to assist those in need of housing, job-search, as well as physical and emotional support through its various agencies despite incredible reductions in its annual campaign. We at Shaarey Zedek are grateful for the continued support of the Jewish Federation of Metro Detroit and the miracles it seeks to create daily. May God grant security, peace and prosperity to the State of Israel and to all who support and are supported by the Jewish Federation, and may it go always from strength to strength.

B’shalom,

Rabbi Aaron L. StarrDirector of Education and [email protected]

Miracles Can and Do HappenIf We Meet God Half-Way

Pre-KindergartenNow Part of Religious School Shalom! Would you like your child singing Jewish songs and making Jewish friends? Would you like your child to feel at home at Congregation Shaarey Zedek? If so, then now is the time to sign up your child for a Pre-Kindergarten experience at our Religious School! Your child will learn with and from our incredible early childhood educator Helayne Shaw. Most importantly, we hope that every Sunday morning your child’s love of Judaism and being a Jew will grow and expand, and s/he will walk out with a big smile on his/her face. We want your child to love Shaarey Zedek and his/her experience here. For more information, please contact the Education Department at 248/357-5544.

Religious School Receives a Generous Grant for Technology and Professional Development The Congregation Shaarey Zedek Religious School is incredibly grateful for the grant it received recently from the Hermelin-Davidson Center for Congregational Excellence and the Alliance for Jewish Education. Thanks to their generosity the Religious School will be able to continue to invest in technology and faculty professional development in the area of experiential education. Thank you to these generous benefactors for continually supporting Congregation Shaarey Zedek and for helping us to fulfill our mission of educating our youth in engaging, meaningful, fun-filled ways.

The beautiful Michigan summer has finally set in. The trees are green – the air is hot – and the living is Jewish!

How has your family planned to continue “doing” Jewish while Religious or Day School is on break for the summer? Checkout “Summer Time … and the Living is Jewish” at www.shaareyzedek.org. There, you can find a calendar of Jewish activities to participate in, both at home and around the community, as well as great Jewish conversations to have

with your children. Here are some ideas to get you started:

• Join us for this summer’s family education opportunities,

including the Summer Shabbat Dinner Club (for families

with children in grade school) or Shabbat in the Park (for

families with young children).

• Perform a Mitzvah … help a neighbor who is ill or older

with their garden or mowing their lawn.

• Read a Jewish book with your family – find wonderful

Jewish books at www.pjlibrary.org.

• Celebrate America’s Independence by learning to say

red, white and blue in Hebrew (Adom, Lavan, Kachol). • Set a tent in your backyard and pretend you are Abraham

and Sarah. How would you welcome people into your tent?
