Environment Canterbury Regional Parks team leader David Owen said the new facility is being developed in response to demand from local horse-riding enthusiasts.

“With the Selwyn district experiencing significant growth in recent years, there is now even more demand for outdoor amenities which local people can enjoy.

“We have been working closely with the Selwyn District Council to secure funding and develop a plan for the new area and we’ve met with interested parties and formed an advisory group.

This year’s event will be held on November 7 at the Hororata Domain, with over 300 competitors expected to take part.

Games event manager Cindy Driscoll said competitor entries opened this month.

“This is always an exciting time because at the end of the day the event exists because of the competitions.

“A lot of the time you hear event facilitators say ‘we are going to be bigger and better this year’. However, for us this year, it is more about fine tuning what is already an amazing festival.

“The competitions were nearly at capacity last year so we are looking at ways to expand the programme to accommodate more entrants. This includes building our own permanent dance stages which will give the Highland dances more space and a level stage to perform on.”

There are two new competitions being introduced to the event this year. One being the Highland Spin, a fleece to garment challenge where teams of

six people race to shear a sheep, spin the wool and knit a child’s jersey in six hours. This is open to anyone to enter and is already gaining a lot of interest.

The other new competition is a novice Women’s Heavy category. This competition will look to attract female competitors who want to test their strength and athleticism across four traditional heavy events including the caber toss, sheaf toss, hammer throw and stone put.

Mrs Driscoll said the inaugural Oceania Heavyweight Championship ran at the Games in 2014 with an extremely talented field of international athletes.

“The calibre of this championship is fast making it a ‘must attend’ for the serious heavy athletes who compete at events internationally. This is sure to make the Heavies arena a star attraction for visitors once again in 2015.”

Surrounding the competitions there is a full festival with a huge range of market stalls, fairground, Scottish Clans with genealogy, food and wine tasting and ‘Have a Go’ areas.

“Visitors to the Hororata Highland Games love to get off the bleaches and get hands on with various activities such as tossing the caber or sheaf, farmers walk, archery or new this year, the haggis toss.

“It sounds cliché but this event truly has something for everyone. Whether you compete or attend the event as a visitor, it is very hard not to get caught up in the festival atmosphere.

“It was very rewarding for the huge team of volunteers to see so many people just buzzing as they left the event last year and we aim to have the same effect this year,” Mrs Driscoll said.

Competitors and stall holders can find more information and the online entry form on the Hororata Highland Games website

The schools which will receive a share of the funding are Lincoln Primary School, Lincoln High School, Broadfield School, Ladbrooks School and Springston School.

In addition, Darfield High School will get a share of a $345,043 pool of NetNZ funding earmarked for Japanese, Korean and Mandarin language teaching.

Selwyn MP Amy Adams is encouraging the schools to apply for the second round of funding for which applications close this month.

groups comprising a total of 129 schools that have received funding from the first round of the $10 million contestable fund, which aims to increase the provision of Asian languages in our schools.

“We are a trading nation, so it’s important our future workforce has the opportunity to learn another language and understand another culture,” Ms Adams said.

The programmes will begin next year. Applications for the second funding round are now open and schools have until September 25 to register their interest.

Devon was among the school’s Pukeko Team to take part in the concert which featured students from 15 schools from around Canterbury.

Devon partnered up with a friend from another school and recreated the 1960s New Zealand singing duo The Chicks, Suzanne Lynch and Judy Hindman, singing Love in a Fowl House.

Teacher aide Rita Spadoni said the children from the Pukeko Team had practised for quite a few months before the concert and were very excited to showcase their singing.

Hamish Reid, Nic Menary and local police officer Scott Carmody spent six hours rescuing people stranded in Otira Gorge on the West Coast side of Arthur’s Pass, after responding to a calls in early August.

Around 20 vehicles were stranded, including three buses. While most of the vehicles had already been evacuated, the fire team, along with a West Coast police unit and roading contractors from Sicon Ferguson, worked from 8pm to 1am to evacuate another 20 people. Many of those rescued were

Force Controller Nic Menary said the new Landcruiser handled the conditions exceptionally well, and the team would have never attempted the rescue with their regular fire appliance.

“Although the regular fire appliance is a four-wheel drive, it was inadequate for the conditions that night. The Landcruiser muscled through the snow drifts with ease.

“This day was particularly bad as a layer of ice from the night before was

on the road and this received a healthy dump of snow on top. The fact it is a double cab allowed us to move people more quickly.”

The keys to the emergency response vehicle were handed over to the rural fire force in July, replacing an older vehicle from the 1970s.

Selwyn District Council provided $60,000 for the vehicle to be purchased, fitted out and brought up to emergency response standards.

The vehicle carries medical equipment including a defibrillator, a stretcher and

first aid gear. Its fire-fighting capability includes a water tank that holds 200 litres with a foam induction system.

The Arthur’s Pass Volunteer Rural Fire Force emergency response vehicle was used to rescue motorists stranded by heavy snow.

Lincoln had been the team to beat all season with its opponents in Saturday’s final, Rolleston, the only side to have come close, losing by just one point to Lincoln in round robin play.

Both sides were a little tentative in the first quarter, although both played accurate, fast-flowing netball and at the end of the quarter the score was locked up at 12-12.

In the second quarter mistakes started to creep into the Rolleston game and Lincoln fed on those errors to establish a seven point lead heading into the final few minutes of the quarter. However, an injury break gave Rolleston

Lincoln champions in perfect seasonby Kent Caddick

The Lincoln premier netball team has pulled off the perfect season after its win in the final seeing it undefeated in 2015.

time to gather itself and when the halftime whistle blew it had reduced the deficit to just four points, 22-26.

Rolleston rung the changes at halftime with Kiani Smith coming on at goal defence, centre Neena Woodgate shifting to wing attack in place of Dakotah Bishop and Anteisha O’Connell moving from defence into centre.

Lincoln made just the one change at the break, a planned one, with Lynda Summerfield replacing Vanessa Robinson at wing attack.

The third quarter was an even affair but Rolleston was unable to make much progress into Lincoln’s lead and at the

end of the quarter Lincoln had a three point advantage, 41-38.

The match turned early in the final quarter as Rolleston’s desperation to close the gap on the scoreboard led to errors, which Lincoln pounced on, and with goal shoot Hannah Wilson at her unflappable best Lincoln had built up a 10 point lead, 49-39, after just five minutes into the final quarter.

Rolleston called a time out and while its defence picked up, forcing several held balls by Lincoln, it couldn’t get the ball into the shooting circle often enough to halt Lincoln’s progress.

When the final whistle sounded

Lincoln was ahead, 56-49, and worthy Selwyn netball champions for 2015.

Throughout the season Lincoln played smarter rather than faster netball and in the final against a young Rolleston side that style of play was a winning one.

Lincoln’s defensive unit of captain Kelly Hutton, Claire Tait (GK) and Charlotte Cramond (GD) proved a tough nut to crack all season, while mid-courters Charlene Porima, Vanessa Robinson and Lynda Summerfield ensured shooters Hannah Wilson and Courtney Cramond had plenty of ball and time to do their jobs.

Left: Lincoln goal attack Courtney Cramond sets to feed the ball forward. Right: Hannah Wilson lines up another shot for goal.

Lincoln celebrates a perfect season with its win in the final.

Nurturing communication and healthy relationships at homeby Anna Dalzell, www.change.net.nz

How often does the tension in your household rise to boiling point? ‘Lucy' was having problems at school,

wanting to leave, moping around the house, arguing with her parents. She said she didn’t care about her friends, her studies, or what her parents thought.

Attempts by them to cajole, advise, engage, and reprimand were met with defiance, swearing and general hostility. They thought that what she was doing was rebellious, reckless and wasteful, but they were mainly afraid of where this was leading and were worried about what she might do.

Living with others is not always easy, and when you throw in teenage hormones, the pressures of school, friends, work and financial stability, it can become extremely difficult to maintain constructive and loving exchanges with members of your family.

John Gottman has done over 30 years of research at Washington University studying relationships. One of his findings was that in any conflict, once a person’s pulse rises above 95 beats per minute, the chances of a positive resolution are next to nil.

Finding ways to keep your cool and express yourself constructively is a great start towards helping everyone

meet their needs.Someone whose work centred around

establishing and expressing needs was Dr Marshall Rosenberg, who founded the internationally recognised centre for Non-violent Communication. He was fascinated with the relationship between all things.

Rather than apportioning blame he found it most useful to concentrate on the interaction and relationships between family members and on working out any unmet needs. Making moralistic judgements implying wrongness or badness only creates resentment and defensiveness. Insults, blaming, put-downs, labels, comparisons, criticisms, and diagnoses are all said to be forms of judgement.

The first step is to work out the actual problem and decide on whose problem it is. If you are able to let others know how this problem affects you, and how you would benefit by having it resolved, they can then decide what part they are prepared to play in helping you with that.

Acknowledging and respecting your loved ones’ hopes and dreams, and showing you value their individuality, while expressing your own needs, makes

it more likely that they will oblige you by adjusting their behaviour. Of course it works both ways - making efforts to understand and meet their needs helps them feel valued and supported.

For Lucy’s family, by not reacting to the hostility, her parents were able to maintain a relationship that allowed them to hear their daughter’s worries and reflect those concerns back to

her. Lucy felt heard and validated. They discovered an underlying need for some control over her own life and they came up with a plan that allowed her some independence and life choices, while still maintaining her safety and future opportunities.

A conflict free home is less important than respectful acceptance of each other’s differences.

Your child needs the holidays to recharge their batteries and refresh themselves, ready for the next term. Holidays are also an opportunity to spend time with your child and have fun together.

Keep it simple, affordable and fun. The key is enjoying time with your child – it doesn’t have to be a chore or cost a lot of money.Tips to thrive• Take the pressure off yourself - decide

that you’re just going to enjoy hanging out together without the hustle and bustle of the school term

• Remember all the free, fun games and activities you enjoyed as a kid (before iPads, PlayStation and Xbox)? You’ll be surprised at just how much fun you’ll still have – and your kids will enjoy them too!

• At the start of the holidays get your child or children to write a couple of ideas for things to do in the holidays and put them in a jar. Each day pull one out of the jar to do that day

• Especially with younger children, don’t forget the old favourites – playdough, fingerpaints, water play and bubbles

• Cries of ‘I’m bored’ are okay. Children often come up with their most creative play when they’re bored. Let them know it’s their choice to be bored, or they can choose not be bored

• Bring some balance into the holidays – organise some activities, but also

How to survive and thrive in the holidaysForget ‘just surviving the holidays - here are some ideas to help you and your family and whanau have fun and thrive.

have some quiet time each day, where everyone does something by themselves, including you! It could be reading, drawing or listening to an audio book

• If you’re working in the holidays, use the evenings or time when you’re not working to have fun time with your child, free of the school time routines

• Get your child involved in the day to day running of the household. They often like to help plan and make the meals. Helping with housework also teaches your child lots of important skills about being organised, being part of the family, co-operating and contributing!

Some fun ideas• Organise play dates with friends

– they’ll love the extra out-of-term time together

• Let your child build a tent or hut using old sheets, blankets and odds and ends from around the house

• Get the whole family out into the fresh air – it could be a bike ride, a trip to the beach, or a visit to a park or reserve in your area that you’ve never been to before

• Plan an “expedition” – take the bus or the train, and get them to map out a walking adventure. You could

even take a snack and have a picnic. Young children will love dressing up in character for their adventure

• Visit your marae or family you haven’t seen for a while. School holidays are a great time to talk to your kids about where they are from and who they are

• Take part in some of the free school holiday activities that libraries, local councils, and even shopping centres offer

• Think about the projects your child has been doing at school. You may find some activities, events or exhibitions in your area that will help your child

Then when you include the word 'Humus' into the discussion, things can get really heated.

At one extreme there are those who view OM as the vital and essential link controlling the productivity of the soil. At the other extreme is hydroponic farming with no soil. As in most things, the importance of OM is somewhere in between.

What we do know is how little we know about OM. It's highly complex and its components have only been partially identified. What is known is that the age of OM in the soil ranges widely from very recent additions from plant breakdown, to ancient humus, which can be thousands of years old.

Organic matter is sometimes considered to be synonymous with humus, but it can include all organic materials in the soil, from recent additions such as straw and plant debris, manures, and microorganisms as well as old well decomposed humus.

Life in the soil does matterby Dr Clive Dalton

There’s nothing that fuels arguments between the proponents of ‘chemical fertilisers’ and supporters of ‘biological, organic and biodynamic farming, than the subject of Organic Matter (OM).

What does OM do?• It's derived from the breakdown of

plant materials, either growing in the soil or carried there by nature or human intervention.

• It's important in soil structure - especially in helping stability.

• It helps with water retention.• It helps with nutrient retention,

especially N, P, K and S and how these are leached from the soil.

• It affects soil colourWhat is humus?

Organic matter and humus are not the same thing.

Humus is regarded as the final product of the decay of organic materials added to the soil.

It's what remains after most of plant and animal residues have been decomposed by soil micro-organisms.

It is very stable and some can be very old, hundreds of years and even older.

Organic matter in soil ranges from very recent additions from plant breakdown, to ancient humus, which can be thousands of years old.

Microorganisms in the soilThese are one of the wonders of

nature. Professor Iain Young from Armidale NSW quotes that in a handful of soil, there are more micro-organisms then the number of people that have ever in habited our planet.

Go and dig a spade spit of soil and look at it, break it apart, smell and even taste it! And marvel at the wonder of it all.

These living organisms feed off plant residues such as sugars, starches,

proteins, waxes and other highly complex molecules.

The rate at which organic matter added to the soil decomposes, depends on soil pH, water content, soil texture and temperature.

Soil pH is critical as most micro-organisms become less active as acidity increases, and below pH of 5.0, there will be greater concentrations of organic matter, e.g. in peat soils. But peat soils are also anaerobic (and hence acid) because they are waterlogged.

While the main product of organic decomposition in the soil is carbon dioxide, mineral nutrients are also released which plants can use.

They all have little nodules on their roots where bacteria called Rhizobia species live. They can convert nitrogen gas into nitrate, which the pasture plants then use as a fertiliser. Clover is also very high in all the nutrients that stock need.Free nitrogen from clover

This is briefly how it works. There is a large quantity of nitrogen gas in the air (about 80%). In a good healthy soil there should be masses of air spaces - which contain this nitrogen gas. If a soil has no air then it is in fact dead.

The Rhizobia bacteria, living in the little pinkish-white nodules on the roots of legumes, absorb this nitrogen gas and convert it into the compound ‘nitrate’. When they die nitrate is released into the soil as free fertiliser for other plants to use.How much for free?

You see some very wide estimates of how much nitrogen a healthy clover plants will provide for a pasture.

When the clover weevil was at its worst, it was predicted that if the clover in a good pasture was completely wiped out, dairy farmers would have to provide

The magic of clover and the legumesby Dr Clive Dalton

Clover is in the legume family along with plants like lucerne, Lotus species, lupins and gorse.

up to 230kg of Nitrogen/ha to replace it. Thinking of the fertiliser Urea (which is 46% N), this is 500kg of Urea. That’s a mighty amount of fertiliser for free.

It would be reasonable to think of say 100-200kg N/ha from clover, but you do see figures in excess of these amounts. The message is clear, - we cannot afford to farm without healthy clover, so look after it.How do you care for clover?

Make sure your clover is correctly fertilised - as you need a healthy plant to have healthy nodules. The nodules should be pink in colour.

Make sure the clover plants are not shaded out by letting the grasses get too long.

Try to avoid the clover weevil (bites circles out of the leaves), and the clover flea (that scrapes the soft tissue off the underside of the leaves). If things get really bad and the clover is disappearing, you may have to face insecticide treatment. Insect pests come and go, so don’t panic unless you have had more than one season of infestation.

Has EQC been through your home. Does it need freshening up after the plasters and painters.

When you are designing a new home, or doing alterations, consider features that will improve access and ease of movement for people with mobility problems and for everyday activities, such as vacuum cleaning.

The size of your house does not have to limit the home’s sense of space. This can be achieved by clever design – the flow of the rooms, lightness and airiness achieved by careful placement of windows and walls, ceiling height, storage and interior decorating.

Obviously, the fewer walls, the greater the sense of spaciousness, but smaller areas can be easily created for separate activities without sacrificing the sense of spaciousness. Use moveable screens, panels and large doors to either close off or open out a room.

Other devices to create a sense of separate spaces within a large area without compromising spaciousness include step-downs, different ceiling

Clever design can make the best use of space, even in smaller houses.

heights, different flooring, projecting bookcases or wall units, and lighting. A good designer should have ideas but also look for ideas from magazines, books and the internet.Ceiling height

The standard height of ceilings is usually 2.4 metres. But some people choose up to three metres. This can give the house a feeling of space, grandness and elegance, but it will probably add to your building costs.

However, according to real estate agents, homes with higher ceilings generally fetch better prices than similar quality homes with the standard ceiling heights.

Consider mixing the ceiling heights, for example having lower ceilings in your bedrooms and adding height in the living spaces. Higher ceilings will require heating with circulation systems to spread the heat and air evenly.

Storage, home offices, and kids spacesAs we all know, kids like to make a

mess and generally lots of noise so, if you have the space, consider an area which the kids can call their own. One way to make a small child’s bedroom more useable is to put the bed on a platform which leaves space underneath for a desk or toy area.

In the past, a home office would be put into a bedroom or any available free space. Nowadays, a home office is almost essential as work often spills over into the home and many more people work at home.

It allows a quiet space for work, but separates noisy computer games from other living areas, and creates a clear separation between work and home.

If you are renovating and don’t have the space for a separate office, consider screens or partitions and, for aesthetic reasons, have storage to keep files and equipment out of sight.

An excellent source of information about building accessible homes is a BRANZ publication Homes without Barriers.

It is full of diagrams and advice for anyone involved in the design or alteration of houses to accommodate those with disabilities and the elderly, and is equally useable by building professionals and homeowners.

For more information contact BRANZ on 04 237 1170 [email protected] or go to their website: www.branz.co.nz

What they do is completely different from what an ordinary person trying to get fit needs to do. A professional bodybuilder does nothing but lift, eat, and prepare for competitions. This is not a normal person's lifestyle, and will not work if you are trying to get fit while having a job, a family to take care of, or a normal life.

The difference between ‘bulking’, and "leaning out", or gaining muscle and losing weight, is that when you're bulking, you need a calorie surplus, and when you're leaning out you need a calorie deficit.

If your goals are to gain muscle and lose fat, you need to use a way of alternating between bulking up and leaning out that works for you. Some people alternate every three months, some alternate weekly, different people

Gaining muscle and losing weightFor someone trying to live a normal lifestyle, there is no point following bodybuilders, watching what they do, and trying to copy their diet or exercise techniques.

have different results. For the best results, most people

find three months of bulking followed by three months of losing weight to be effective.

Now it is possible to build muscle without gaining weight, and to do that you need to be in the gym 4-5 days per week, for 45 minutes to an hour, putting some good stress on your muscles for bulking.

If you're trying to lean out or cut, it's all about burning. Your workouts need to be focused on burning as many calories as possible. Five or six days a week you need to do some kind of cardio, whether that be team sports, sprinting, running, biking, or elliptical machines.

Nutrition is extremely important to reaching your fitness goals: 80% of your results will come from nutrition and

diet, the other 20% will come from your physical activity.

The truth is, you cannot gain muscle and lose weight at the same time, with a single diet and exercise program. It is possible to bulk up without gaining fat, and it's possible to lean down

without losing muscle mass. To do both, you need a disciplined approach of alternating between a muscle building program and a fat cutting program.

Building muscle and losing weight is not about turning yourself into a body builder. Photo courtesy of www.gde-fon.com
