This year marks the 22nd year of the iconic competition and coincides with National Sausage Day which was held on October 22.

Countdown’s Alpine Pork sausage, which was selected the Supreme Award Winner, was up against over 400 entries to the competition.

Held at Billfish Cafe in Auckland, a panel of culinary trained chefs, butchers and food writers judged the sausages on visual appeal, aroma, flavour, texture, shrinkage and composition.

Peter Kendrick from Countdown said he was elated with the win and is looking forward to creating more products for consumers to enjoy over the summer months.

“We are very proud. This is the greatest achievement, we are ecstatic,’ Mr Kendrick said.

“I think winning has come down to keeping up the high quality that Countdown customers expect. We are certainly very ready to get engaged

with what winning this competition has to offer.”

Head judge, Kerry Tyack, said the quality of the sausages has improved every year.

“This is a great way to start sausage season. It’s great to see manufacturers putting more creative flair behind their product and there are certainly sausages in categories that improve year after year.”

On average five children are killed in New Zealand driveways each year – most are toddlers under the age of two. And every fortnight, a child is admitted to hospital with serious injuries after being run over by a vehicle in their home driveway.

Valeria Tokoar and Emma Renata are the faces of Safekids Aotearoa’s new awareness initiative ‘Check For Me Before You Turn The Key’.

Ms Tokoar’s son Tyreese, (18 months), was fatally hit by a car in a driveway in Onekawa, Napier, in 2009. She said people need to be aware that children may be behind, beside or in front of cars unseen.

“We want to help educate drivers on the need to always look for children in driveways,” she said.

Ms Renata’s son Te Manawa Whetuki,

(1 year old), was fatally run over in a driveway in Papatoetoe in 2014.

“Being a parent of very young children is a challenge-they are fast, and sometimes it may seem impossible to keep an eye on them all the time. However knowing this risk is more reason to be vigilant about the supervision of children around cars,” Ms Renata said.

Director of Safekids Aotearoa, Ann Weaver, says central to the campaign is the distribution of ‘Check for Me Before Your Turn the Key’ keyrings across the country.

“Parents can place their child’s photo in the keyring. We hope they remind drivers to walk around the car before getting in the car, and to make sure children are in a safe place and supervised by an adult,” Mrs Weaver said.

SPECIAL BULK BARK

Serendipity Players, a community drama group, was formed in March and will present a performance of three one-act plays written by English playwright Nick Warburton.

Director, and one of the founders of Serendipity Players, Kate Brunner, said the group includes past and present members of Kirwee Players as well as some new to acting who will be treading the boards for the first time.

“We wanted to have a bit of creative freedom in our choice of plays but we also really enjoy getting on stage, performing, working hard and having fun.

“We were keen to perform a play that was not a musical and which catered for a wide range of ages on and off stage.”

The result is a production consisting of three one-act plays by Nick Warburton about a community theatre group rehearsing a production of Hamlet, the chaos backstage as the stage manager attempts to organise the set changes,

Theatre group debuts in KirweeSelwyn’s newest theatre group will make its debut performance in Kirwee next month.

and the unusual after-show party. The first act is set during rehearsals,

with the director trying to quell the attraction the older actor has for the young actress playing Ophelia. His fiancée, the wardrobe mistress, is not amused.

Act two is a chance for the audience to watch the chaos as the stage manager desperately tries to bring order to the set changes, and his crew vainly follows his mixed instructions.

The third act brings together crew and cast as they get together after the show to talk about the highs and lows of their production.

The show will run from Thursday, November 5 to Saturday November 7 in the Kirwee Community Hall, with performances starting at 7.30pm.

Tables will be set up for the audience to use as they are encouraged to bring their own refreshments, such as drinks and nibbles, to enjoy during the play.

As well as being one of the founders of Selwyn’s newest drama group Kate Brunner will also direct the group’s first production.

The trust was officially launched in August and its aim is to provide financial assistance to maintain and restore the Greendale district’s community facilities.

The Gardens of Waianiwa open day will be held on two adjoining properties along Warrens Road on Sunday, November 15, from 10am to 4pm.

It is the first time the two gardens have been open at the same time and the gardens cover six acres across both properties.

The first garden, ‘Waianiwa Homestead’, was established by the Warren family who settled in Greendale in the 1860s and features a variety of mature trees which were planted by the early settlers.

Previous owner Dame Malvina Major made extensive changes to the original gardens while current owners Ian

Jefferis and Mark Brown have improved and created new areas.

The second garden, ‘Waianiwa’ surrounds the Warren’s current home and features a reflective lake.

The garden was designed by Ruth and Ian Warren to create vistas from the house, with garden rooms which each have their own features. The shelter from the trees planted by earlier generations assures that even strong nor’westers have little impact on the stillness that prevails.

As well as a chance to wander around these magnificent gardens there will be a good range of market stalls, including hot and cold food, for visitors to enjoy.

The entry fee is $10, children under-16 free, with all the proceeds going the Greendale Community Trust. More information on the open day can be found at www.waianiwa.co.nz. A reflective lake adds to the atmosphere of Waianiwa gardens.

“They know the people in the community and encourage and assist them to get in touch with us for help. Expect to hear a lot more from the both of us if you live in the Malvern area,” Ms Shone said.

Mr Cossey said the Two Rivers trust’s work is about building a resilient community.

“It’s all about neighbours helping neighbours. We like to encourage ‘good gossip’ such as information about what CEA can do.”

Recently six members of the Two Rivers’ trust paid a visit to CEA’s Christchurch headquarters where CEA energy adviser Michael Begg took them around the display for ideas on energy efficiency and discussed

practical ideas to help the local Malvern community.

Two Rivers member Bev Elder said she had a picture in her mind of what CEA was about before the visit.

“But it was so much better than what I had expected. I liked the cut-away house, that was such a stimulus to ask questions. It was easy to compare with my own house and what I need to do to make it more comfortable.

“And there is the reassurance that the information is backed up by science and is not about the latest gizmo. CEA make it very easy to encourage people to ring up and ask.

“I feel we have a very solid link to CEA’s service now,” Mrs Elder said.

West Melton School is celebrating the achievements of teacher Liz Coster whose work has been recognised with an Advanced Classroom Expertise Teacher Award. The Advanced Classroom Expertise Teacher (ACET) programme was set up by the Ministry of Education in conjunction with the New Zealand Educational Institute to recognise teachers with exemplary classroom practice and to encourage highly experienced expert teachers to stay in the classroom. “We are extremely proud and acknowledge Liz’s achievements,” principal Sue Jackson said.

Chairman of the Southbridge 150 organising committee, Selwyn district councillor Pat McEvedy, said the weekend went very smoothly and he was blown away by the numbers who attended.

Southbridge’s sesquicentennial celebrations a successby Kent Caddick

An enormous success is how organisers describing Southbridge’s 150 year celebrations over Labour Weekend.

“We are extremely fortunate with the weather over the weekend and we probably had around 3000 people for the street parade on Sunday and up to 2500 attend the sports day on Monday.

“The local community has been really supportive of the event and a huge amount of organisation by some hard working volunteers has gone into making the weekend an enormous success. The

feedback from locals and visitors has all been positive.”

The two proposals were among a range of suggestions put forward through the initial consultation phase of the area plans’ development.

Council undertook public consultation in July and August in which local residents gave their thoughts on how they would like their townships to develop, and what they liked about where they lived.

"We would like to thank local residents who made submissions or attended the drop in sessions for their comments," Deputy Mayor Sarah Walters said.

“Council is now working on gathering additional technical information to help form area plans for Ellesmere and Malvern and will look at that information, as well as community feedback, to develop draft plans.”

The area plans are aimed to provide a 15-year framework for sustainable growth and development.

Residents share ideas for the futureImproving walking and cycling options in Leeston and providing more medium density and large section options in Darfield are two of the suggestions put forward by locals as the Selwyn District Council looks to develop local area plans for Malvern and Ellesmere.

Ms Walters said the plans will look at how townships within Ellesmere and Malvern could develop and where housing, businesses, open space, community facilities and infrastructure could be located in the future.

In total 53 submissions were received during the consultation. Seven drop in sessions took place as part of the consultation at Leeston, Dunsandel, Springfield, Darfield and Glentunnel, and around 70 people attended the sessions.

From submissions and drop in sessions residents made a wide range of suggestions for the future of local townships.

Some of these suggestions included providing for more growth to occur in Doyleston and Southbridge, allowing for business growth in Dunsandel along with improving parking in the town and improving walking and cycling options

in Leeston. In Malvern towns keeping the rural

character of Coalgate was mentioned as being important, and providing more medium density and large section options in Darfield and more housing options for Glentunnel were suggested.

crossing points in the township and Springfield locals suggested additional tourist information in the town.

Draft Area Plans for Ellesmere and Malvern are expected to be released for public consultation in late February 2016.

The competition is a collaboration between Poetica, The River of Flowers project and Canterbury Museum and the winning poem will feature in a mural being created on a wall in the museum during an exhibition commemorating the fifth anniversary of the February earthquake. The mural will be revealed on February 22, 2016.

Poetica’s Elise van Bentem says the topic of the poem, to be no longer than eight lines or 40 words, is ‘Who or what gave you strength to carry on after the earthquakes?’.

Ms van Bentem says the topic was chosen to give students a wide range of things to write about.

“It could be the student’s family, friends or teacher, their hobby, a song or a story, or a smile, a hug or a walk on the beach. It could be anything or anyone that gave them strength after the earthquakes.”

Poetry to mark earthquakesBudding Selwyn poets in Years 4 to 8, are being invited to enter a short poem in the ‘Bloom Poetry Competition’.

Entries close on November 9 and a panel of judges will choose the five best poems which will be posted on the Poetica Facebook page. The public will then vote for their favourite poem.

Full details and conditions of entry are available on the Canterbury Museum website.

The exhibition, also called Bloom, will open in early February 2016.

The special exhibition will run for the whole of February and feature floral tributes by the people of Canterbury, as well as poetry.

River of Flowers creator, Michelle Whitaker says they are excited to be working with Poetica and the museum.

"We know this anniversary will be a big one. We want to provide the space for people to reflect on the last five years. Bloom is one opportunity to playfully explore the good in our recovery journey - there will be something for all ages."

Organised by the Dunsandel Community Committee the proceeds of this year’s two-day book fair will go toward the building of a Dunsandel community facility to replace the old community hall which was damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes.

One of the organisers Rachel Reid said there will be thousands of pre loved books, magazines, records and DVDs on offer at the book fair.

“Ultimately the Selwyn Book Fair is about raising funds but it is also a great chance to promote a love of reading in an affordable way with all ages and genres catered for.

“It will also be a great way for people to recycle materials in an environmentally responsible way as they can, ‘go green by buying pre-owned’, while cleaning out

their book cases and getting in some new reading for over the Christmas and summer break.

“There is great community involvement and spirit around the book fair and it is proving to be a greatly anticipated event.”

Ms Reid said they are looking at making the book fair an annual event.

Surrounding the Scottish competitions the event offers a fully-fledged festival that has grown year upon year.

Games stalls convenor Dee Innes said that at the start of the games in 2011 the stalls were an added bonus accompanying the unique spectacle that the highland competitions provide.

“However, over the past four years this part of the event has grown in to an attraction in itself.

“The response from stall holders has been unprecedented; we have 25% more stalls this year. We are very careful to ensure we have the right mix of stalls and entertainment; we want to offer something for everyone.

“We are also pleased to have some unique ‘Scottish’ stalls that really add

One piece of equipment that can help make the task of managing grass a pleasure is the ride-on mower or lawn tractor.

So, what is the difference between a ride-on and a lawn tractor? Anything you ride on and mow is technically a ride-on mower but when people refer to lawn tractors they generally mean a ride on mower with the engine mounted at the front of the vehicle with the mowing deck at the back.

Other ride-on mowers have rear mounted engine with a mowing deck below or in front of the driver.

A ride-on with a rear mounted engine is very manoeuvrable and has a much smaller turning circle than a lawn tractor. Lawn tractors usually have steering wheels but other ride-ons can have levers or foot controls.

The reason these ride-ons are so manoeuvrable is that the rear wheels are independently powered so you can turn really tight circles and mow around obstacles more easily.

What you need depends on what you want to do.

All ride-ons are not made equal and some are built specifically to cope with slopes, long grass or rough terrain.

It's important to do your research and talk to your salesperson before making a decision.

Choosing a ride-on for your lifestyle blockArticle supplied by www.lifestyleblock.co.nz

Grass is a wonderful thing but on a lifestyle block you can either have too much or too little, and the grass that does grow is often not where you need it - on the lawn, not the paddock.

What to consider when buying a ride-on• How often you will use the ride-on:

If you are trimming a lawn every few days you'll need a different machine to the one you'll need if you plan to use your ride-on to top a 3 acre

paddock when it needs tidying up. You need a ride on that is robust and powerful enough for your needs.

• What horsepower engine is appropriate: Generally ride-ons will be between 13 and 20 horsepower. More horsepower is needed for wider cutting decks or machines designed to go over rough terrain. If your ride on has a catcher it will also need more horsepower to blow the grass into the catcher.

• What size mowing deck you need: Obviously, a wide mowing deck will mean less time spent mowing but there's a lot more to it than that. A wide deck is only appropriate on really flat land, on rougher ground it could result in a very uneven finish or even scalping patches of high ground. Also,

a wider deck means you need wider gates and clearances between trees and fences.

• What you want to do with your grass once you've cut it: If you want to collect your grass then your ride-on will need a catcher of some sort. When you're looking at ride-ons, you should have a look at how the catcher will be emptied. If you don't want to bother disposing of the grass you can choose to return it to the garden or paddock, either as grass cuttings or mulch. Grass cuttings will be visible and can be raked up, mulched grass should be invisible and will help to improve the quality of your lawn.

• Who will use the ride-on: Is the ride on comfortable for everyone who is likely

When deciding on what type of ride-on mower you need think about what other uses the machine may have.

to use it? Are the controls easy to use and, very importantly, is the seat comfortable? Controls vary widely between ride ons and everyone who will use the ride on should test drive it before buying.

• What else you want your ride on to do: Ride-ons and lawn tractors can do more than just cut grass, some come with tow bars to pull trailers. This is useful if you want to mow more than one catcher-full of grass at a time. If you intend to tow, check with the transmission manufacturers as to towing limits, ride-on mowers are not tractors, and most will l have a towing limit of around 100kg, unless you are looking at lawn tractors

• Fuel and running costs: Almost all ride-ons are petrol driven. Ask about fuel consumption and other running costs such as how often will it need to be serviced and how much will that cost.

• Safety features: Does the ride-on motor stop if you get off the mower?Your ride on will be a valuable asset

and should be looked after. Keep it in a dry place when not being used or buy a cover for it. Make sure it is serviced when needed.

Ride-ons can be attractive to thieves so make sure you have adequate insurance.

To help with this decision and for some ideas for garden features and what work might need building and resource consents Consumer New Zealand offers the following advice. What are the options?

A well-designed garden can be a perfect setting for your new house. It can provide pleasure and useful indoor/outdoor living space, save you time and effort if it is designed for easy care, and will also add value if you decide to sell.

For many people it is not until they move in and face the mud and piles of dirt surrounding their new home, that their thoughts turn to landscaping.

Registered architects and some designers are trained in landscaping, and when you hire one to design your new home you can choose whether to include this service in your brief with them. This might be particularly important if you start out with a vision for the entire finished project.

Similarly, if you are having your house built through a group housing company, the package may include some basic landscaping, such as driveways and paths.

If you are doing it yourself, for many people it can be a pleasure to spend weeks, months and, more likely, years planning, digging and organising their garden and outdoor areas. Others are happy just to put in some lawn and a few necessary paths, and forget about it.

If you decide to do your own landscaping, it pays to have a plan – draft up where the clothesline will go, the paths and the garden beds. See if it works on paper. This could save you a lot of hard work shifting things around later when you find it doesn’t work as you envisioned.

If you go down the track of hiring a professional landscape designer, find a designer that you like and that listens to you. It is an idea to have magazines, pictures, books or photos of designs you like to show your designer.

The garden is one area where you can really express your personality but give the designer room to make suggestions about layout, plants and features.

You need to be able to give them ideas about your lifestyle – are you the outdoor barbeque type of person? Do you love gardening or do you want something that will just take care of itself? What sort of garden do you like – cottage, formal or native for example? What features do you want - paving, fencing, a pool, fishpond, glasshouse, spa, or gazebo? Is privacy from the neighbours and the street important to you?

The type of soil and exposure to the elements will dictate what will be best for your location.

Landscape architects are trained in landscape design, contract documentation and supervision. They

When it comes to landscaping one of the first things to consider is whether you will do the landscaping yourself or employ professional help.

often won’t do the actual work, but can help you choose and invite tenders from landscape contractors, organise the contract and oversee the project for you.Garden features

Like gardening, many people enjoy building outdoor features. There are lots of readily available magazines specialising in landscaping to give you ideas. And your local library is a good source of information.

But if you don’t have the skill, time or inclination, you can employ others to do the paving, concreting, plastering, fences and even to sow the lawns, make gardens and paint.Ideas for garden features include:• Paving and pathways: concrete, tiles,

concrete pavers, wooden decking, stones, pebbles, shells.

• Fences, walls and screens: for privacy and to create ‘rooms’ in the garden. These features should meld with the materials and style of the house.

• Water features: fish ponds, fountains, pools and spas. They need advance planning as earth will need to be dug out and water systems put into place. Be aware of fencing requirements for pools.

• Lighting: for security, effect and safety.• Art and sculpture: sundials,

statues, birdbaths.• Areas for compost, rubbish bins,

clotheslines, tool sheds, glasshouses. Best put in areas out of the way.

Some outdoor and garden features will need a building consent. Under the Building Act 2004, building work includes:• Building decks one metre or more in

height above ground level.• Building retaining • Plumbing or drainage work that is not

routine maintenance.• Construction or installation of

swimming and spa pools.• Installation of roof, wall and free-

standing communications aerials.• Construction of ‘substantial structure’

fences, such as a fence constructed of concrete, block-work, steel, etc which requires heavy foundations or a fence of any other type of construction over two metres in height.

• Building garages or garden sheds over 10 sqm. When you apply for building consent,

you will be given the Project Information Memorandum (PIM) which contains all the information relevant to your landscaping project.

It is a good idea to apply for a PIM before you get building consent so that you have all the information about the site at hand, as this could affect your planning.

If you are working with a landscape

professional, they should be able to advise you about PIMs and building consent, and may apply on your behalf.

Alternatively contact your Building Consent Authority first and find out if building consent is needed for your proposed garden feature.

You may also need resource consent before building or installing some features.

For example, you may need resource consent to remove a tree so you can build a fence, or your neighbour’s consent may be required to put in a garden shed that will block their light or line of sight.

If you have any doubts, it is best to check with your local council first and find out if building consent is needed for your proposed garden feature.

Noise phobias originate from normal animal behaviour. Loud noises indicate there may be danger, such as predators, falling rocks or earthquakes, and it is normal for animals to seek shelter and hide when noises such as fireworks or gunshots are heard.

Behaviour problems and phobias develop when animals learn to overreact to stimuli such fireworks or thunder that actually do not represent a threat.Signs of fear when exposed to noises include:• Panting• Vocalising (whining, howling)• Trembling/shaking• Pacing• Hiding• Salivating excessively• Seeking people • Digging

Noise Phobias in pets by Yolande Howell, Selwyn Vet Centre

With fireworks season coming up it seems a good time to talk about noise phobias in dogs and cats.

• Chewing or running through barriers• Urinating and/or defecation

Risk factors for the development of noise phobias include breed, age and the pet’s origin.

Some breeds are less likely to be fearful of noises such as Labradors, springer spaniels and cocker spaniels.

The risk of a noise phobia developing has also shown to increase with age. It has been shown recently that the way a dog has been raised also affects the risk of developing noise phobias.

Dogs have a reduced risk of noise phobias when they have been living with the owner who bred them, compared with a dog that has had two or more owners.

Treatment and management of any phobia is not straight forward - your vet will be able to advise you with the

options available and devise a plan. Owners can help at home by exposing

their new puppy or kitten to a variety of noises - recordings of different noises are available and very useful. Such CDs should include thunder, fireworks, firecrackers, vacuum cleaners, gunshots, trains, baby crying etc.

If you have a fearful pet, desensitisation with such recordings are also very useful.

Always play these audio recordings on a low volume and if your pet is settled and happy then you can gradually increase the volume over time.

If your pet starts becoming stressed with one or more noise(s) then turn the

volume down and start the process again. This process may take months but it is something everyone can do at home.

Another important aspect that all pet owners need to bear in mind is that when a pet is fearful it is best to not mollycoddle them.

Giving them more cuddles and saying “it’s okay, it’s okay” basically sends them a message that it is okay to be fearful. It tends to reinforce the phobia.

Pets that seek their owner’s company should be allowed to stay by them, but owners should bear in mind that petting and comforting them is also reinforcing the fear and phobia.

The best thing one can do is to go about a normal routine and show your pets that there is nothing to be worried or be fearful about.

Turn the music or television up and just keep them near you.

There are other products available to help pets such as dog or cat pheromones, but these are best discussed with your vet.

Medications tend to be reserved for severe cases and it will have to be prescribed by your veterinarian.
