Selwyn Central St John is celebrating passing the halfway point in its ambitious project to build a new ambulance station in Rolleston.

$400,000, the total cost of the project is around $1.1million.

Mr Sunckell said they have raised about two thirds of the money needed to complete stage one.

“Major donations toward the project have come from the Rata Foundation, Pub Charity, the Mayoral Earthquake Relief Fund and IZone management.

The old toilet block has been demolished and replaced with a new modular system which will better serve campers and visitors to the domain.

The new facility uses the same modular system as the toilets in Darfield and Springfield. The toilets were manufactured off site in Gisborne, installed on-site in eight days and opened for use just before Christmas.

Selwyn District Council's Property, Facilities and Open Space team leader Graeme Wilson said the facility is a significant improvement on the old block.

Domain toilets upgradedHolidaymakers have been enjoying a more comfortable visit to Whitecliffs this summer, following the upgrading of toilets at Whitecliffs Domain.

MSC Chief Executive Mike Daisley said summer was a popular time in the outdoors but people needed to take responsibility for their safety, and that of the people they were with.

“We want people to have fun in the outdoors, and this doesn’t need to be at the expense of the proper planning and preparation that helps ensure you return safely. There are some really simple steps that can greatly increase everyone’s chances of an enjoyable, safe trip.”

He encouraged people to make sure they let someone they trust know their plans before heading out, whether they write it down, call, text, email or use

the Outdoor Intentions process on the AdventureSmart website.

“The Outdoor Intentions form makes it easy to record where you’re going, who you’re with, how well equipped you are and when you expect to return, and pass that information on to a trusted contact.

“If anything out of the ordinary happens, someone will have the information they need to raise the alarm. This could make all the difference in an emergency situation,” Mr Daisley said.

Cass Lagoon Saddle, outside Arthur’s Pass National Park.

"The new toilets are vault systems, using holding tanks, so there is now no discharge to land - this is a huge improvement in regards to odour control and potential contamination of waterways

"They are a high quality product with robust stainless steel fittings, easy-clean tiles and wall finishes and durable concrete walls and roof."

The total cost of the new facility was $125,000 which included the demolition of the old toilets.

The Emerging Artists Cash and Carry exhibition opened on Monday and runs through until January 30 at the Expoz’Art gallery in Rolleston Square.

Expoz’Art is run by artists Katrina McGettigan, Michelle Green and Julie Sheppard and Ms McGettigan says as artists themselves they know too well how hard it is to get started as an artist.

“We wanted to offer the gallery space to upcoming artists and give them the opportunity to share their talent with Rolleston and the wider community.

Exposing local talentRolleston art gallery Expoz’Art is holding an exhibition with works from emerging Selwyn artists on offer and the chance for art lovers to pick up a bargain.

Work by artist John White will be on sale at the Emerging Artists exhibition at Expoz’Art in Rolleston.

“The response for this exhibition from artists in the community has been fantastic and the standard of work we have received has been outstanding.

“We have pieces ranging from scribed Welsh roofing slate that was rescued after the earthquakes from a house built in 1860 to local contemporary landscape scenes, capturing moments of light and time within the Canterbury region and wider South Island.”

The Expoz’Art gallery is open from 10am to 4pm from Monday to Friday.

Above, Bella Groen, left, and Alessandra Ward will be West Melton Primary School’s head students for 2016. The announcement of the pair’s roles was made at the school’s end of year prize-giving ceremony. Among those to receive awards at the prize giving were Year 8 students (below from left) Alex Jenkins, Sarah Quinn and Braiden Andrews. Alex received the Paula and Jeremy Wilson Cup for academic and sporting excellence, Sarah was named the school’s Dux for 2015 and Braiden received the West Melton School Tikanga Award.

A prohibited fire season, or total fire ban, had been in place, but following the rain the fire status has been altered to move to a restricted fire season in the rural areas of Selwyn district.

"The change follows rain during January which has reduced the fire risk from extreme to moderate," Selwyn’s Principal Rural Fire Officer Douglas Marshall said.

In a restricted fire season, only gas barbeques, crop residue and rubbish fires inside contained drums are allowed in rural areas of Selwyn.

“Vegetation fires to burn trees or other items are not allowed unless permitted and there are a number of conditions which must be met before fires can be lit,’ Mr Marshall said.

“Permits for any burning not specified as allowed above in a restricted fire season will be extremely limited and only approved where an urgent need for a property owner is identified.”

Mr Marshall said with the change in restrictions, crop stubble fires may be seen in rural areas in Selwyn.

“People are asked to check whether anyone is present to control the fire before reporting it via 111 to avoid

unnecessary callouts to volunteer fire brigades. If no one is present to control the fire it should be reported by dialling 111.”

He said council will be monitoring the fire risk daily, and restrictions may be changed based on fire risk indices.

Council recently increased the fines for fires which are either not permitted or allowed under the current restrictions to $1150.

Selwyn’s Principal Rural Fire Officer Douglas Marshall says council will be closely monitoring fire risk indices.

Around 50 firefighters attended a house fire in Rolleston in July but the emergency wasn’t real just a training opportunity for new recruits. Firefighters from Rolleston, Leeston, Diamond Harbour, New Brighton and Ashburton were involved in the New Zealand Fire Service exercise. Rolleston Volunteer Fire Brigade’s deputy chief fire officer Steve Triggs said the house had been donated by the owners of the land which has recently been zoned residential. “The exercise enables us to give our recent recruits the opportunity to experience the heat and flames which they would face in a real house fire but in a controlled environment. “The new recruits, who were accompanied by trainers, were able to get a real feel for what it would be like to actually enter a house on fire as part of their job.”

Jackson Hickling of Rolleston welcomes people to the Selwyn district with a giant snowball. Jackson along with his brother Bailey and mum Jane, as well as the family’s two dogs, took advantage of the June snow fall to go exploring the district’s winter wonderland around Sheffield and Springfield.

2015 A Year in ReviewWe continue with our look back at all the people and happenings in Selwyn which made the pages of The Record in 2015. This year if you have an event or are involved in one, or have some great news you would like to share with the Selwyn community please let us know. Email the editor at [email protected] or give us a call on 03 347 1562.

A large blaze burnt around 15 hectares of land and threatened houses and a plant nursery near Rolleston in early February.

Selwyn fire crews assisted by several helicopters equipped with monsoon buckets battled the blaze with several houses fortunate to come through the fire without damage.

Several residents were evacuated while up to eight fire trucks and 10 water tankers were deployed to fight the fire, which was one of several large blazes which occurred across Selwyn over the summer.

SH1 was closed for several hours to allow firefighters to gain access to the fire.

Firefighters kept busyLike this year last summer was a busy one for Selwyn firefighters.

The school, which is set to open in 2017, will be built on 6.4ha of land between Goulds and Springston Rolleston roads at a cost of $53 million.

Establishment Board of Trustees chair Jackie Freeman said they are absolutely thrilled to have filled the position.

“It really feels that things are really starting to get real with this appointment,” she said.

In August Steve Saville was named as principal for Rolleston’s first secondary school which is to be opened in 2017.

2015 A Year in Review

The Games celebrated its fifth birthday in November at the Hororata Domain with over 9000 people attending, 300 competitors taking part, 102 stall holders selling their wares and 200 volunteers working tirelessly behind the scenes.

Chieftain Alex Bruce, managing director of Adelphi Distillery an independent bottler of single cask Scotch whisky, and a direct descendant of Robert the Bruce, travelled all the way from Glasgow for the event.

Three-peatThe Waihora division one rugby team celebrates winning the Coleman Shield for the third year in a row after beating Southbridge 15-14 in the final at Darfield in August. The match had to be delayed after snow forced the postponement of the Ellesmere Rugby Sub Union’s finals day on Saturday. Hosts Darfield Rugby Club did an outstanding job of clearing the snow off the fields to allow the Ellesmere finals to take place, albeit 24 hours later than scheduled. With time up on the clock Waihora was trailing 10-14 before Ben Stuart crashed over for a try to pinch the match and the Coleman Shield for Waihora. Photo by Kent Caddick The aim of the trust is to provide

financial assistance to maintain and restore the Greendale district’s community facilities. Three trustees were appointed to oversee the trust’s operations, Ian Jefferis, Charles Ridgen and John Ridgen.

Mr Jefferis said a lot of people have been involved in getting the trust to this stage.

“Many of our farming families are entering their fifth generation on the land here and many of those living here now will have descendants who built our various public facilities over the last

100 years or so.“There is a significant financial

commitment required to maintain these buildings especially due to the Canterbury earthquakes and recent storms.

“The trust intends to work in with the Selwyn District Council in relation to the Greendale Domain, with its community hall and cricket pavilion, to provide funds over and above what the council can accommodate within its budget to ensure this facility remains one which our community enjoys.”

Greendale Community Trust foundation committee members and their families pose for a photograph in front of the Greendale Church which thanks to the work of the trust is about to get a new roof.

The previous station was severely damaged in the September 2010 ear thquake and the building was eventually demolished.

St John Malvern Area Committee chair Ann Shepherd said St John in Darfield was blessed to have amazing community support in getting the new building operational.

“A dedicated team has spent the last five years designing and organising the new building with all costs being met from existing funds and new generous donations.”

Ambulance station opensAfter a five year wait a new ambulance station in Darfield was officially opened in September.

Former Selwyn Mayor and Knight of the Order of St John Michael McEvedy officially opened the new ambulance station in Darfield.

Sarah-Kate Simons (10) from Southbridge gets into the spirit of the Southbridge 150 year celebrations by dressing in period costume. Thousands turned out to take part in the festivities to mark the Selwyn townships sesquicentennial over Labour Weekend. A ball, street parade and a sports day were among the events which kept both locals and visitors entertained over the three days.

Hororata Highland GamesThe Hororata Highland Games 2015 Chieftain gave his seal of approval to the 2015 event, which attracted the most number of visitors in the Games’ five year history.

“I was impressed with how well organised the event was and by the number of people who attended, which was considerably more than most Highland Games in Scotland,” Mr Bruce said.

“The Hororata Highland Games is most definitely authentic, paying tribute to many Scottish traditions, but I really enjoyed the new elements that have been introduced and the Kiwi twist was very special.

The Hororata Highland Games once again played host to some of the best highland dancers in the country.

Do you want to save time, money and water?

Follow the rules when it comes to homekillby Dr Clive Dalton

One of the attractions of owning a lifestyle block is the ability to grow and raise your own food, both in terms of vegetables and meat.

When it comes time to prepare that sheep, cow or pig for the family table, commonly known as homekill, there are a number of regulations people must follow or risk a very hefty fine.

Meat sold in New Zealand and export meat is subject to a number of standards under the Animal Products Act, which ensures the meat is fit for human consumption.

Farmers and other livestock owners often want to kill and eat their own livestock but as this home-killed meat is not subject to any standards, no guarantee can be given as to its fitness for human consumption.

Therefore homekill regulations

are designed to prevent potentially unwholesome meat from being marketed. Those who use or consume homekill do so at their own risk.

Homekill, by definition, is the slaughtering and butchering of your own animal, either by yourself or by a listed homekill and recreational catch service provider, for your own use and consumption.

The inclusion of the word 'use' means that animal owners can feed homekill meat to their animals.

Any meat from animals that are slaughtered and processed in the regulated system, that is by a licensed abattoir, including regulated mobile

premises, is not homekill meat. Homekill meat cannot be traded

under any circumstances. The definition of trade under the Animal Products Act means to sell for human or animal consumption and includes, among other things, bartering, supplying as part of a contract, supplying as part of a charge for another good or service, and using for advertisement, prize or fundraising.

Anyone who provides services such as the slaughtering, butchering, dressing and packing of animals for farmers (or owners of stock) and hunters must be listed with MPI as a homekill and recreational catch service provider. It is

an offence to provide such services, for reward, when not a listed homekill and recreational catch service provider.

Only animal owners who are actively engaged in the day-to-day maintenance of an animal, or other animals of the same kind, for a period of at least 28 days immediately preceding the date of the homekilling of the animal may use homekill and recreational catch service providers to kill and or process that animal.

The policy of a 28-day limit is based on a reasonable time period to ensure that the health and welfare of an animal can be cared for.

You can either elect to do this fencing yourself, or use a contractor.

There is a great deal of satisfaction to be gained from doing your own fencing, but it isn't as easy as it looks. The best advice I can give anyone is if you've never fenced before is to start with some professional help.

Get a contractor in, work with them, watch and learn. One way to save money but still feel a sense of accomplishment is to have a contractor drive all the fence posts with tractor and rammer and for you to finish all the wire work. That way you can say "I built that fence.”

While it's good to get it all sorted at once, you don't need to deal with all the fencing in one go. Get any boundary fences sorted out first. Use temporary electric fencing to split paddocks up, to work out what works, then put in permanent fences over a period of time.

Think carefully about what type or height of fence you put in. Conventional height fences are always a safe bet. The livestock you're running now might not be what you have on the property in future. So putting up two foot high fences for the Carpathian Pygmy Cattle you're breeding today might limit you next year when you cross graze them

Get your fencing right on the blockby Pete Gregory

Most lifestyle properties will need fencing. If you’re keeping livestock, you’ll need fences to keep them in, to manage your grazing pasture, and to keep unwanted animals out.

with Ecuadorian Jumping Sheep.Gate placement can make all the

difference to your day. In can be difficult to get cattle to go through gates in the middle of a fence line. A gateway in the corner of a paddock is easier to shift stock through.

Gateways need to be big enough for vehicles and farm machinery to fit through. Hay baling machinery will need more width than most to get through, especially conventional size balers.

Fencing can be dangerous. Be careful with wire strainers, and any wire under tension. When handling wire always wear safety eyewear and protective clothing including suitable gloves and steel capped boots. Cut ends of wire are sharp. Always bend back the last 100mm or so of wire at the end of a roll, or stick it into the ground to keep it out of the way. Take extra care around any working machinery, especially tractor mounted post rammers and augers.

CUISINE

Ingredients

240g figs or pitted dates

50g honey

100g soft brown sugar

1/2 tsp each of ground cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg and black pepper

250g candied fruit, such as cherries, citron, lemon and orange rind

50g blanched almonds

50g pine nuts

50g shelled hazelnuts, toasted

3-4 tbsp plain flour, sifted

50ml Vin Santo (Italian desert wine)

Icing sugar to dust

Panforte di SienaMethod:

Heat the oven to 150 Celsius. Line a shallow 25cm round cake tin, or a 20cm square tin, with baking paper.

Mince the figs or dates and put them in a pan with enough water just to cover.

Add the honey, brown sugar and all the spices. Cook gently for about 10 minutes, then tip into a bowl.

The mixture should be soft and sticky, but not wet.

Add the candied fruit and nuts and mix well, then add the flour and Vin Santo and mix to a sticky mass. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake in the oven for 30 to 40 minutes.

Take out of the oven and leave to cool in the tin. Sprinkle generously with icing sugar and serve cut into thin wedges.

Thought to be specifically from Sienna, you may also find recipes referring to it as Panforte di Sienna.

Panforte literally means ‘strong bread’, but is more like a fruit cake. It is rich and spicy, often with a hint of pepper, and usually eaten in thin slices after dinner with the accompaniment of port, desert wine or coffee.

If you are looking for something a little different this year you could make panforte in place of your usual Christmas cake.

This recipe is by Italian chef Antonio Carluccio and is for a traditional panforte, Panforte di Siena. There are many other recipes available which put a twist on this classic, such as chocolate panforte and panforte with marzipan known as panforte fiorito.

Note the ingredient Vin Santo is an Italian desert wine, and is available for purchase in New Zealand but you may need to order it ahead online. It is the same delicious desert wine traditionally used to dip biscotti into, so not a bad idea to have a bottle or three in the house for such occasions.

Dessert Italian style: Buon appetitoPanforte is a traditional Italian dessert from the Tuscan region with evidence of its candied fruit wonders being enjoyed as far back as the 13th Century.

Real estate agents all say, if you are planning to market your property forget about buying flash ornaments and furniture to add some value, get your lawns in order. First impressions count.

When it comes to new lawn it all happens in the root department soil good soil preparation is paramount.

This involves removing any weeds or debris from existing lawns, cultivating new beds to five to ten centimetres and levelling out the areas ready for seeding.

Remember if it’s a larger area, you need to ensure there is a slope on the grassed area so water doesn’t pool.

One of the best ways to ensure success is to spread an even layer of lawn preparation mix on top of the soil.

Sowing lawn seed is the cheapest way to establish a lawn and it’s easier than you think, so once the soil preparation is done, choose a fast growing seed.

Under good conditions, warm weather and a little rain, new grass seedlings will appear within a week.

areas from the dogs, cats and children. Even through the grass appears quickly, it takes a couple of months to be fully established.

Simply scatter seed in an east to west direction then a north to south direction to ensure an even spread. Rake in lightly to ensure seed is covered. Water lightly and keep moist on a daily basis during the germination period.

Like people lawns need plenty to eat and drink. A thick, lush lawn stops weeds from establishing and insects from deciding to use it as a home base.

Autumn is the right time to apply lawn fertiliser for both established and freshly sown lawns.

The trick with feeding a lawn is only to use specific lawn fertiliser. This will ensure a blend of all the right nutrients to promote a healthy robust and long term lawn.

Over winter and autumn, the ground temperature drops dramatically, and it can cause lawns to suffer.

Retired MAF livestock officer John

Newton runs a few sheep on his small

property in Selwyn Street to help

feed himself, but a recent dog attack

saw one sheep killed and two others

seriously mauled.

“It appears these two dogs made

their attack at about 4.15am as my

neighbour on hearing a disturbance

entered my property and disturbed the

dogs during the attack causing the dogs

to take off.

“These dogs are killers as in

my experience the attack was by

throat strangulation normally used

by undomesticated, uncontrolled

mongrel animals or animals in natural

wild conditions.

“My concern is these types

of dogs could well be capable of

attacking children.”

He said as a superannuitant his

sheep were his annual supply of meat

and also helped to keep the grass down

for fire protection.

“The two surviving sheep were so

stressed they are now unsuitable for

human consumption which means a

loss of around $500 and I will have to

replace the animals.”

Mr Newton said the Selwyn District

Control animal control was informed of

the attack and he was impressed with

their response.

“Animal control was prompt in

attending following a call, taking

descriptions of the animals, photos of

the aftermath of the attack and doing a

The dogs were caught on a security

camera and the footage has given to

the council’s animal control department.

Mr Newton said it isn’t the first time

Coalgate residents have had to deal

with dog attacks.

“There have been around 30

sheep killed by dog attacks in the

Coalgate area over the last two years

which have resulted in a loss to the

sheep’s owners of about $3000 and

in many cases the sheep have been

family pets.”

Council’s Senior Animal Control

Officer Steve Clarke said they were

alerted to the attack by Police.

“After the attack a witness was

interviewed and black and white CCTV

camera footage was also reviewed.

“Two dogs were involved in the

attack and they appear to be either

a Mastiff or Staffy cross breed. The

dogs looked very similar and could

well be related so staff also checked

records to identify where there were

registered dogs in the area of similar

breeds and spoke to a number of dog

owners, however, this did not identify the

dogs involved.”

Mr Clarke said they also sent letter

to properties in the Coalgate township

asking for information to help identify

the dogs.

“This also advised dog owners to

check they were responsible for their

dog's activities and that owners need to

ensure they know where their dogs are.
