You may not think about it much,but everyone has a lesson to shareand a story to offer. World War IIfor example, which killed andinjured more people than anyother war in human history,impacted an entire generation --from soldiers on the frontlines ofbattle, to children at home partici-pating in the war effort. Learnabout both world history andyour family’s history by talking toolder relatives and friends abouttheir experiences and trials. Youmay even consider tape recordingthe conversation so you can sharethe personal account with others.

If you have a story yourself, con-sider writing it down or retelling itat the next family gathering.

Read a War Memoir

While reading and understanding thepast is possible by delving into a stan-dard-issue textbook, there is nothing likean eyewitness account to get a true feelfor a crucial time in history. Suchaccounts can deliver a unique perspec-tive on a familiar story.

The tales you discover can help you bet-ter connect with history. One such book,the newly released “Terror Before Dawn:A Child At War,” by Anne Raghnild Fager-

berg and William Sterling Williams, pres-ents Fagerberg’s account of her child-hood experience during World War IIunder Nazi rule in Norway.

Williams, Fagerberg’s son, found hernotes after she died of cancer in 1998.

She had completed her story shortlybefore she passed away. Though only achild during the war, Fagerberg did whatshe could to contribute to winning thewar, distributing newspapers and litera-ture of the underground resistancemovement.

“The reflections of a war survivor offerlessons about courage, survival, rebuild-ing and freedom,” says Williams. “Herpiece of history needed to be preserved.”

No one is too young to learn about andhonor the past. While children mightenjoy a holiday parade, be sure to explainthe true meaning of the day so theyunderstand the reason for all the fanfare.
