THE RAVENSBOURNE REVIEW Issue 8: 12th - 16th November 2018 “TO BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE”
Summer 2019 Exams - Contingency Day - Wednesday 26th June 2019
The Summer 2019 exams may seem a long way off, but we wish to share some important information with you to avoid any possible issues next summer.
During the Spring Term students will be given their individual exam timetables. The Summer written GCSE exam period will run from Monday 13th May to Thursday 20th June 2019. In addition, there will also be a ‘contingency exam day’ on Wednesday 26th June 2019. This has been arranged by the examination awarding bodies and all students need to be aware of this date.
The Joint Council for Qualifications has put this in place for GCSE and/or GCE examinations, should sus-tained national or local disruption arise during the June 2019 examination series.
This means that all exam candidates must be available to sit any exam organised for Wednesday 26th June 2019. This decision is not a school decision and applies to all candidates in all schools.
Please can all students/parents/carers make a note of the contingency exam date in the event that an awarding body needs to invoke its’ contingency plan and ensure that they take this into consideration when booking any events or holidays.
Of course, it is hoped that there will be no need to use this date, but failure to attend any exam that has to be taken on this day could adversely impact on the student’s exam grade.
Mrs E Tilzey
Examination Officer
Welcome to Issue 8 of The Ravensbourne Review. This week the focus is heavily on anti-bullying and
rightly so. The Pastoral Teams, Miss Barker, Student Leadership, Big Brother, Big Sister and many others
take an active lead throughout the year to educate the school community. Many studies point to a happy
school being a successful school and that is certainly the place we call The Ravensbourne.
This week the behaviour and achievement system has shown an increase in positive behaviour of 10%.
Meaning 87% of all logs were positive. To put that in context, Ofsted would rate an outstanding school at
75%. An impressive return for a gloomy November week.
Well done all!

Thank you to all the staff and students that took part in ‘Odd Socks
Day’ on Monday. It was brilliant to see so many people being unique
in their bright and colourful odd socks. Here are a few of the odd
socks that were seen around the school.
Wall of Respect Another massive thank you to everyone that contributed to the ‘Wall of Respect’. It’s
brilliant to see what respect means to people and all the different ways in which we can
show each other respect.
Yesterday’s focus for Anti-bully week was cyberbullying. We spoke about
what Cyberbullying is, how we can stop it, what to do if it happens to you
and how to support people if they are a target of cyberbullies.
To mark the end of Anti-bullying week , Miss Parrish and her incredible
dance team performed a very moving performance at lunchtime in the Small
Hall. It was a excellent way to finish what has been a very powerful and
thought provoking week.
On Tuesday a number of Year 9 students took part in the Speak Up Speak Out public speaking course.
This one day public training workshop gives the students the skills to develop and deliver a competition
speech on a topic that is important to them.
The following five students were selected to go through to the second round. Congratulations to Thea
Van Den Belt, Dominika Cupa, Jacob Doran , Balmee Hunumunt and Charlotte Tompsett.
From these five, two students will be selected to represent The Ravensbourne School in the Speak Up Speak Out Competition later on in the academic year. All students received a certificate for taking part and Alana Brown and Freddie Martin also achieved certificates for being most improved on the day.

BIG RED BOX CHRISTMAS CAMPAIGN 2018 BIG RED BOX is a King's Church London Christmas initiative, supporting those in the local community who might go without during the festive period by collecting food and distributing Christmas hampers. It focuses on local families in Sydenham, Downham, Lewisham and surrounding areas who might not be able to afford a Christmas meal this year. Over the past four years BIG RED BOX have given away over 2300 boxes and in 2017 they aim to collect over 1000 boxes, helping those around us at Christmas. Last Year the Ravensbourne School collected 70+ boxes- this year we aim to break our record once more.
Why should we get involved? Many of us forget how fortunate we are at Christmas. Lots of presents, delicious food and loving families are something that we take for granted. However, this is not the case for everyone and Christmas can be a very lonely and stressful time, both financially and emotionally. There are people living only a stone’s throw from you, who will really struggle this year. Getting
involved with this project won’t cost you much time or money but it will make a huge difference to
others.
Step 1: Bring in the items allocated to your form (we will happily take other items you can spare)
Step 2: All boxes will be sorted to create a hamper with a selection of food ready for a family to receive
at Christmas.
Step 3: Boxes will be ready to go and sent by Friday 8th December.
NATIONAL THEATRE TRIP WITH NEW VIEWS PLAYWRITING GROUP
On Wednesday, nine students, who are taking part in the National Theatre’s playwriting initiative were
given the opportunity to see a new performance at the Olivier called Hadestown.
The performance was mesmerising, a modern day fable based on Orpheus – the poet singer – and
Hades – the King of the underworld – who takes Orpheus’ beloved, Eurydice, into the underworld. The
songs were amazing and exhilarating, replicating traditional jazz sounds from the Deep South of
America in the 1930’s. The students loved the spectacle and seemed to understand that this old Greek
myth was still relevant, especially in the way it was presented in its new form.
As the students are working to create their own new performances it was a great chance for them to
see how new work is created using old sources. We all look forward to celebrating their achievement
and…watch this space…have Rehearsed Readings in May 2019 of their new scripts.
Mrs Duncan – Drama
On 15th November TRS Dance organised the first Bromley Schools Dance Showcase where we saw schools from across the Borough bring dances to perform. It was such a lovely evening showing how talented our pupils are and giving the dancers a chance to meet and watch each other.
DANCE
Recognising young people’s outstanding contributions to the community.
Do you know a young person at The Ravensbourne School who has done something great
to help the community? Such as helping other children, disabled or elderly people or
maybe a sick relative. Are they working to improve the environment or organising an
event to raise money?
If you do then please let Mrs Orchard-Green or Mrs Maidment know. Your nominations
will be passed onto the Bromley Rotary Club Youth Award Team for their consideration.
The winners will receive a voucher to spend in The Glades, Bromley and have their
achievement celebrated in a ceremony on 25th January 2019 at The Langley Park School
for Boys.
Application forms can be found in the KS3 and KS4 offices in the Science block or email
