Graffiti brightens block wall There’s nothing for people to grumble about with the latest piece of graffiti about town – the new mural adorning a wall of the old changing sheds at Kopua Domain is a positive work of art.
The bland concrete block wall was transformed with brightly coloured paints and youthful creativity into a giant Raglan-themed mural in a three-day graffiti art workshop attended by a small group of Raglan Area School students.
Their brief was to come up with a concept of what was important to them about living in Whaingaroa, said teacher Gabrielle Williams who first approached Raglan Arts Council about the idea back in October.
“I wanted graffiti art done by the kids,” Gabrielle told the Chronicle of the project designed to get Year 7-10 youth involved in end-of-year activities both in and out of school. “There is a place for graffiti in the community.”
Gabrielle and her dozen or so protégés were inspired by graffiti at the nearby skatebowl, and a $200 grant from SuperValue’s monthly
Community Cash fund “got the ball rolling”.
Then Waikato District Council came up with extra cash for paint, and graff artist Dallas Mihinui from Hamilton’s Art with Aroha was roped in as tutor. He regularly works with young people in the city on graffiti art projects to create positive images for the community.
The completed mural of Whaingaroa shows not only Mt Karioi in the background with sunset, waves and a playful Maui’s dolphin but also the area school’s Maori symbol for kaitiaki or caring which was designed by two of its artists and teachers.
The symbol represents one of the school values, said Gabrielle – of caring for each other and the environment.
“Hopefully we can do more (community art)”, she enthused this week.
Gabrielle is particularly grateful to both SuperValue and the local council for help with funding, and to the students for their participation.

Picture yourself on a cliff edge about to abseil down a 15-metre limestone rock drop towards the sea and you’ve a fair idea of what Raglan Rock – an adrenaline-pumping new foray into adventure tourism – is all about.
It’s challenging and a bit scary but certainly makes for a different kind of day out across the harbour, as I discovered last Saturday when I entrusted what felt like my very life to local rock-climber Gareth Jones in an adventure the braver among us might say is to die for.
Gareth’s spent hours over the past few years at a secluded limestone rock, tree-clad patch of paradise on private farmland discovering and naming various top-rope climbs to suit anyone from the rank novice to the dare-devil.
There’s ‘stupid fat hobbit’ for starters, a warm-up climb wearing safety goggles along with the compulsory helmet because, Gareth explains, “you go up a wee canyon and you feel like Gollum”.
Even so it’s not as easy as it looks for a beginner like me, finding footholds and handholds in the narrow crack or gully of the rock and wearing unfamiliar climbing shoes. But a harness which is attached to Gareth at ground level via a secure network of rope through a belay offers a foolproof safety system, Gareth assures me.
“You’re only going to fall the stretch of the rope, like a mini-bungy (jump).” And I did.
Once the first climb’s mastered, and you’ve gained some confidence and perhaps even paused at the top to admire the view back to Raglan, it’s on to an adjacent rock-face climb called ‘Emerald Viking’ in homage to Gareth’s half-Norwegian heritage. It’s got awesome underclings, I’m told, for leverage with hands turned upside-down.
And, guess what, it works. Then there’s the abseil which isn’t half scary.
Yes, we’re on top of the world, facing Mt Karioi seemingly suspended in the sky, but it looks a long way down to the blue-green sea below with jagged rocks jutting out. OMG!
Gareth mentioned later he could feel my heart pounding as we hugged at the top for the quick photo-shoot to prove we really were there and about to plummet downwards. It was breathless stuff all right, and nothing to do with human attraction. This was feeling the fear.
“Lean back, legs wide and straight, walk backwards, bend knees, jump out” – the instructions came thick and fast from above and, surprisingly, in no time at all I was on terra firma.
There’s ‘Elemental Kingdom’ still to tackle and, if time permits, what Gareth calls the piece-de-resistance – his ‘Rags to Riches’ climb with quartz crystals embedded in the ancient limestone rock. I backed off pleading old age, infirmity and anything else that came to mind – but the rest of our party saw the adventure through.
Even with my truncated version Raglan Rock’s a real adventure-and-a-half, taking a full afternoon by the time you’ve paddled a kayak courtesy of Raglan Backpackers across harbour and back (local skipper Ian Hardie is available to ferry those not so keen on the kayak trip).
Gareth’s a guide with seemingly endless patience and ingenuity. The former steel erector turned personal trainer – who climbed in Thailand, Majorca and America well before settling in Raglan eight years ago and taking work at Raglan Gym – talks his clients through their adventure and is passionate about “growing the seed”.
“I think this is going to be really big (for Raglan),” he says of Raglan Rock. He’s convinced such a tourist town needs more “adrenaline-pumping stuff” for backpackers and the like.
Gareth’s done some bush-crashing on site and made steps on slippery, leaf-strewn slopes to help tourists – and mad-keen locals – as they gamely tackle three if not four climbs up the ancient limestone formations, better known as pancake rocks.
He talks of the pastime as a liberating, non-competitive experience in which one gets a feel for the landforms. And while quite physical, it’s also mentally rewarding.
In fact rock-climbing is a “metaphor of life”, says the ever-enthusiastic Gareth, in that obstacles are overcome with perseverance. “It’s a great leveller.”
And there’s only two rules. “Try not to tread on your rope,” he says, “and have fun.” That we certainly did, even if my sore muscles say otherwise.

Christmas time is here, and for most, it’s a time for celebration. Up at Xtreme we’re no different. The good news is our continuing progress towards our goal of zero waste for Raglan.
During the last 12 months, only 25% of your waste went into landfill, with the remaining 75% either reused, recycled, composted or up-cycled.
We can’t achieve these consistently high figures without your help. You choose which bin to put things in. So thanks Raglan. You’re doing a great job!
It’s also a time for reflection. Last year was tough, as it was for many. A 14% drop in the total volume of waste we handled, seems clear evidence of just how tough things are in the community.
As an economic indicator, it implies a substantial dip in household consumption. Then again, it could be the town is changing its purchasing habits, as we also had a 4% increase in recyclable products.
Like most, we are striving for efficiency to see us through tough times. We need you to prepare your recycling for kerbside as well as possible at this busy time. Lids off plastic bottles please, and washed and squashed. We now take plastic containers up to no 7, but please, no broken glass. It’s not fair for the boys
It’s time to celebrate, Raglan!
to be wading through rotting food and dangerous items. Please think of them when you’re doing your recycling, and if you’ve had a big party, please bring the debris up to the centre. Thank you!
Another huge thanks to anyone bringing quality items to the centre for reuse. We will honor these gifts with a fair price. If you’re on a tight budget this Xmas, Kaahu’s Nest, our site shop, is a great place to find inexpensive treasures. Tim Rainger
Rarotonga, Kawhia: the world’s
A trip to Rarotonga sounded “pretty good” to new Lily Street homeowner Henry Dumbleton, downtown last Friday night after he won the draw for a Ray White Raglan Real Estate $2000 travel voucher.
And when free travel insurance was thrown in by another local business, The Travel Brokers, Henry’s winning smile became a beam.
He told the Chronicle – amid crowded post-auction Christmas festivities at Ray White which raised $600 for the Motor Neurone Association – that he was “very, very happy” with the house he bought about a month ago. Anyone who’d bought or listed a property exclusively with Ray White since September 1 was in with a chance, so long as they turned up on the night.
Locals heard the $2000 voucher would take Henry and partner Hannah Mueller almost anywhere, from Kawhia to Rarotonga – but that “you’d get a lot for your money” if it was Kawhia.
Meanwhile a magnum of champagne went to Wainui Road mortgage broker Brett Wood on the night, along with a few “consolation” chocolate prizes for others, as principal Julie Hanna and husband Dave handed out the pre-Christmas goodies.

An event which organisers are billing as “Raglan’s biggest ever Christmas party” is set to be held the weekend after next to celebrate the reopening of the town’s wharf.
Before the disastrous blaze that razed the old sheds almost three years ago now, the wharf was developing quite a reputation as a vibrant destination, but that’s nothing to the buzz and crowds expected on Saturday week - December 22 - at a celebration being co-hosted by Raglan Seafoods and Ohaupo winery cum functions specialist Vilagrads.
While Vilagrads will offer both wine tasting and music – the long-established family winery has its own 3 Brothers band – Raglan Seafoods will come to the party with a large lit-up Christmas tree and staff all dressed as elves serving up tantalising fare ranging from barbecued kebabs to $10 specials of
two pieces of gurnard and chips.Vilagrads will set up outdoor tables and seating
though some of the platters may come from closer to home – the Tony Sly Pottery which relocated after the big fire into the old boat-building factory.
There’ll be draws each hour for spot prizes such as charter trips aboard the Islay Mist and items from the pottery and new wharf arrival Soul Shoes, which has relocated from Bow Street and set up not only shop but also its entire footwear and leather accessories workshop.
Raglan Seafoods’ Jordan Newberry, one of the main organisers, says that with Christmas as the theme there’ll also naturally be a Santa. But in keeping with the wharf location, he and his big bag of lollies will be arriving not by sleigh but by cruise boat the Wahine Moe.
The big multilevel catamaran is due to dock
Big Christmas party will relaunch wharfabout 4pm and children can have their photo taken with Santa. The shots will be uploaded onto a Facebook site from where they can be accessed for free.
With parking at the wharf at a premium, a free shuttle will run during the day from and back to the Raglan CBD. Wahine Moe and Karioi Lodge operator Charlie Young has also offered use of his electric bus.
Raglan Seafoods owner Mark Mathers says the Waikato District Council has been “very supportive” of the day and organisers also hope the council will allow them to
temporarily lease one of the remaining vacant spaces in the wharf building as a backup in case the weather turns bad.
That might also provide a venue for council-appointed realtors Lodge to promote the last two spaces for lease and hopefully tie up a suitable business or two.
Meantime Vilagrads was still waiting early this week on a liquor licence for the day, but that was not expected to be a problem.

For the third year in a row Sue Oliver and her helpers are organising a midday Christmas dinner at the town hall, on Christmas day. “If you find yourself alone this Christmas, then come on down as it is just like any other family Christmas dinner. The family just happens to be the Raglan community and the home happens to be the town hall” says Sue who extends an open invitation to the community. Around 200 people have attended in the past and Colin and Rhonda Chung will once again prepare a decadent feast including turkey, ham, lamb, sushi, chicken, salmon, loads of salads and vegetables. The desserts are bought along by those attending or are kindly donated. Santa will be on hand to make this annual occasion a day to remember.
To make this special event happen, Sue makes a request to the community as they need donated inexpensive gifts to go under the tree. They would be gratefull to receive home made or under $10 gifts for men, women, girls and boys. On Christmas Eve they would appreciate helpers to come and decorate the hall. “We would like it if children could be encouraged to make their own decorations and come and hang them up so we can beautify the hall and the tree” says Sue. The Raglan Supermarket has kindly donated some funding to help with the expenses through their monthly initiative that supports local community groups. Hamilton company ‘Bit of a Do’ kindly supplies all the beautiful table linen. Please call Sue Oliver 825 7906 if you are keen to come along or pop into the Community House and they will put you on the list to get an idea of numbers for catering purposes.

This Saturday and Sunday children’s community dance group, Whaingaroa Youth Movement will be presenting their annual end of year show at the Town Hall with this year’s theme, You Are Here.
You Are Here is a moving, breathing, mind-map. It’s about the places we go without leaving home. It’s about finding your way through missing, wishing and wanting, when influence and pressure are pointing the way. When all along, the destination is here and now.
Whaingaroa Youth Movement warmly invites the community to join them in a secret garden to discover crazy scarecrows, puriri moth and birds in flight!
This year’s show will be a special occasion for the dance group with the project honouring the past ten years of dance making, mentors, creative contributors, choreographies, dancers and all the connections they have made and the memories they keep.
Longtime dancer of the group, 18-year-old Indya Gibbs, who is continuing on to Whitireia next year to study performing arts and dance,
has also made a choreography for the show.
The production is dedicated to the memory of Al Williamson (1926-2012). A long-standing member of the Raglan Community Arts Council, Al worked on all Whaingaroa Youth Movement’s past shows as well as all of the Raglan Art to Wear and Community Theatre shows. A much-loved mentor to the dance group’s teacher and coordinator, Patti Mitchley, Al passed away in February this year.
“Whaingaroa Youth Movement (est. 2003) is a children’s community dance group. We are about being together, to dance, create, and explore ideas collectively. We strive to connect and relate personally to movement, placing value on process and creative self-expression. Our performance work is about who we are, where we live and how we see the world.”

This week we talk to local Kartika Leng who once again is designing the costumes for Whaingaroa Youth Movement’s dance project this weekend.
How did you first become involved in costume design?
It all started with our children really, I would make fairy dresses for my daughter and her friends, which I adored doing.
I made a vampire cape for a Halloween Party one year, for Jahvik. The next year I had lots of orders for Halloween costumes. It picked up momentum from there.
I have always been in clothing production to some degree. Costume is easier for me because of my overwhelming desire to embellish. I have to refrain from making my mainstream fashion pieces gimmicky or ‘themed’, an editing eye is crucial for commercial fashion. It’s much more natural for me to make my costume pieces more in style.
Take us through the process of brainstorming through to the final designs.
Initially I get together with the choreographer who sets the tone and is always inspired and excited about the project, it’s infectious.
It is a sensory driven process, the music, the lighting, the venue and the range of movement are all absorbed into creating the garments to enhance all of the surrounds.
What is your favourite part of the process?
I love it all. The ideas, the excitement, the exploration of materials, concepts, designs, patterns, colours, techniques, the challenge and seeing them manifest from inside my head and brought to life on a stage.
What is the most challenging part of the process?
I’m sure any ‘creative’ working under a deadline can understand the most challenging part is how all the other areas of your life can get neglected. I’m very lucky to have a family that is very supportive of my mess and bizarre meals and routines!
What design are you most proud of?
My most recent was ‘The Whispering Birds’ production in the Hamilton gardens, Red and White silk robes. They were bold and striking looking while being soft and fluid in motion.
What can we expect in this years production?
Whaingaroa Youth Movement is one of my favourite collaborations due to how much community involvement there is. I think this is reflected in the styling of ‘You Are Here’.
This year we have taken a different approach to costume production. There is a lot of ‘up-cycling’, re-using garments and materials that were available from our community. Individualizing most garments so they have a personality and customizing them for the dancers and the story they are telling.
Best advice you have ever been given?
“The grass is green where you water it”.

Area Fishing Report: by Raglan Wharf Seagull
The Fishing Section of The Raglan Club announces that early in 2013 we will be running an annual ‘Smoke your Fish Challenge Competition.’
There are a number of citizens in our community who are very skilled at smoking fish with their time held secret ways and ingredients. Maybe, they don’t any longer catch fish, but they sure now how to ‘smokem’ when given surplus fish. They don’t have to give up any secrets, just present their smoked catch on competition day.
Frozen fish will be available for ‘Smokem’ for those who wish to participate.
The event will be helded at The Raglan Club.Date and time and other details to be further announced.Entry will be free.Entries will be coded, presented on plain plates, by an
independent person.Judging by 3 local talented Connoisseurs.( Their decision
will be final no matter how many tears). One entry per person.Trophy and prize to the winner. That person holds it for
one year. There will only be ONE winner, no runner ups or placings. The panel of judges will comment on every smoked fish
entered.Competition is open to all, if a Hamilton entry wins we
just have to get better, don’t we.After the judging and the presentation, smoked fish will
be available for others attending to taste. This has already caused a lot of interest amongst legendary
Raglan fish smokers.I would however like to suggest that all take the time now
to brush up on fish smoking skills, for it is not going to be easy. Just submitting a smoked fish, done with brown sugar and a bit of mixed spice is not going to win this competition.
It will be colour, smell and the taste. Too salty, or too dry, and you are out.
‘Mate, if I could only win this competition for one year………..what a year it would be.’
The Raglan Wharf Seagull
The Ecolab Tournament recently summed up our Raglan recreational fishery.
The average weight of their top 20 snapper caught in Raglan was over 8lbs, of their other tournaments - 4lbs. Size does count.
Fishing days of late have seen some rough lumpy seas. Fish are there though.
We have caught snapper of up to 9lb but have in general struggled for size, many coming in at around 37cm. But large gurnard to 45cm are caught regularly, two at a time and plenty of them. Mo from Anexa Vets, caught a 2.86 kahawai that was a horse of a fish and took out the top weight. She was a very happy lady. Notably also there are a number of trevally around.
Cray fish are in good numbers so far this season.Fishing Omens: No bananas.
Sprats seen working whilst launching your boat is another good omen for that day.
Moon fishing: is always best the 4 days up the new moon and up to the full moon.
Big tide range give more current out at say 50m mark and the fish seem to be on a harder bite between the high and low tide times.
Bonito is still the best bait.January: we have the Inaugural ‘Gals ‘n’ Gurnard’
Tournament on the 5th and on Sunday 27th the long running annual Manu Bay Fishing Competition.
Tuna and billfish, maybe mahimahi will soon be arriving off our coast, so boats will be trolling out wide to experience the challenges and pleasures of sports fishing off Raglan.
Flounder still abound up the harbour and around our bays. A large kingfish was seen across the harbour from the wharf chasing baitfish or flounder in the shallows by a kayaker during the day. I believe more will arrive as the waters warm up.
All the best for the festive season, play it safe and we will see you out there with bent fishing rods.
Come along and sing well known carols with us!

Pledges still sought for NYE fireworks displayAs of Friday 30 November, the Raglan Chamber had $4000 in pledges towards this year’s NYE fireworks display. There’s still a way to go to achieve the $6000 needed to ensure the magnificent dis-plays that the Cultural and Events Trust have achieved in previous years. So the Chamber are still looking for pledges from businesses or individuals who would like to put a little extra into the community this year. Please contact Angela Williams on 825-7003 or email: [email protected] to make your pledge.
Raglan ‘Smokem’ on its way
These are the simple facts of fish smoking.• Open up your fish off the backbone.• Using common plain table salt (not
iodized) spread salt onto the fish flesh.• Refrigerate in roasting dish, as it will
make moisture for hours.I usually allow for overnight, but some allow 2 hours.
• Then paper towel off the fish flesh to absorb that moisture.
• Sprinkle on either, honey, brown sugar or molasses, and add herbs to taste.
• Place in smoker using sawdust, wood chips, not treated timber or gum, for as long as you deem necessary.
• You want colour, moisture content, crispy on the surface, not too salty or dry and that ultimate smoky herbal taste…………..Enjoy!
• You can easily ‘google’ smoking fish - it just takes time and experimenting with the various ingredients and wood types.
