The President's PageDear Daughters^

This morning I received a telephone call from a gentlewoman in South Carolina. She wasgoing home to Vermont and beginning the first Daughters chapter in the state. My heartfilled with joy. By the time you read this issue of The Royal Cross the women in this chapterwill be installed in the Order. Their journey with us will have just begun. Meanwhile, another chapter in Florida will have celebrated its 100*^^ anniversary. These Daughters have ahistory of faithfulness to their vows. Many prayers have ascended, much service has beenperformed and many women have come closer to God. "Go into all the world and preachthe gospel."Go, tell the story of Jesus and as you go - make disciples. As the Order is established in

new territory, disciples are added to the Kingdom and we can hear— The Applause ofHeaven,Max Lucado.

The work of our Order is done by individual Daughters in individual chapters. You,precious Daughters of the King, are the Order. Disciples are not made by argument but bythe love of Jesus shown through each of us. We pray for supernatural help to keep usfaithful and protected from being beguiled into following the wrong path.

It is vital, dear ones, that as the Order expands we make a greater impact for Him. Hiswork is why our territory is enlarged. I quote from Dr. Bruce Wilkinson, author of ThePrayer of Jabez, "If your friend needs to hear the message of salvation, the Holy Spirit isready now to help you take the first step and say the first sentence. And His will is that youdo it now."

As Daughters we have experienced the wonderful love of Jesus. How can we keep thistreasure for ourselves and refuse to share His love? Others that each of us know are thirstyfor living water. Can we refuse them drink? Let's share with other people what we have inso much abundance: Joy, Love and Light. My prayer for each of you today is that you beblessed in great abundance.

Chaplain's Message, May 2002

The Rt. Rev. Stephen H.Jecko, Chaplain

Bishop of Florida

Dear Sisters in Christ,

A class studying the wonders of theworld was asked to list what they thoughtwere the greatest Seven Wonders of the

World. Though there was somedisagreement, the following received the

most votes: The Great Pyramids of Egypt;the Taj Mahal; the Grand Canyon; thePanama Canal; the Empire State Building;St. Peter's Basilica; and the Great Wall of

China.

When gathering the votes, the teachernoted that one student, a quiet girl, hadn'tturned in her paper and was still writing. She asked the girl if she washaving trouble with her list. ^^^ShinicThe girl replied, "Yes, a little. I ̂ Wonders (couldn't make up my mindbecause there were so many." , . ̂The teacher said, "Well, tell us ^what you have and maybe we 'can help."

The girl hesitated, then read, "I think theSeven Wonders of the World are: to touch,

to taste, to see, to hear, to feel, to laugh, and

to love." The room was filled with

deafening silence. It's far too easy for us tolook at the exploits of humanity and refer tothem as "wonders." Far too often we

overlook God's gifts and all He has done forus and regard them as merely"ordinary." (Good Shepherd, Jacksonville,Sunday bulletin)

It's the ordinary gifts of God that, becausewe treat them as ordinary and not

"wonders," often catch us off guard causingeither great joy or great sorrow. The girl'slist of wonders included six behavioral

words and or\Iy one about feelings.Summer, and traditional wedding time is

upon us. If we examine a very familiar

passage from scripture, often read at

weddings, we find St. Paul speaking inexclusively behavioral words: Love is

patient... kind ... does not envy ... doesnot boast... is not proud. Love is notrude ... is not self-seeking ... is not easilyangered ... keeps no record of wrongs.Love does not delight in evil but rejoices

with the truth. Love always protects ...

f the trusts ... hopes ... and perseveres. (Ithought Corinthians 13:4-7) Would that grooms andof the brides, soon to be husbands and wives,

truly hear God's Word that love is aved the behavior before it is a feeling. Weddings areif Egypt; about feelings; marriages are about: the behavior. Not just in marriage, but in all ourluilding; human relationships, the divine will of GodWall of can be found when we practice loving,

Give Yourself A Gift^Come To Trienniail

By Sharon Lundgren, Triennial Chair

Triennial 2003 is in Minneapolis, MN, July

24-28, 2003. Our theme is "Streams of LivingWater." The theme comes from John 7:38,

when Jesus said, "Out of your believing heart

shall flow streams of living water."

Our teaching leader will be author Richard

J. Foster. Many Daughters are familiar with

his books: Prayer and Celebration of Discipline. His most recent book. Streams of Living Water

will be our teaching tool, along with HolyScripture. The six streams that Mr. Foster

presents are: the Contemplative, or prayer-filled life; the life of Holiness, or the virtuous

life; the Charismatic, or Spirit-filled life; the

life of Social Justice, or the compassionate life;the Evangelical, or Word-centered life; and

the Incamational, or sacramental life.

Mr. Foster is the foimder of an ecumenical

ministry called Renovare, an infrachurch

movement committed to the renewal of the

Church in all her multifaceted expressions. As

Daughters of the King, we reach out to

Anglican, Episcopal, Roman Catholic,

Lutheran and Orthodox women. Mr. Foster

will include on his teaching team: Roman

Catholic author, Emilie Griffen and Episcopalpriest, Felicia Smith-Graybeal. Felicia's

husband, Lyle Smith-Graybeal, will be

conference coordinator to the teaching team.

Do you know which stream the Lord has

plunged you into? Are you a Contemplative,

or Evangelical, or is your passion SocialJustice? Believe me, you are definitely in atleast one of the streams, and you may be inseveral. Our Lord Jesus of course exemplifiesall the streams!

As Daughters we want to celebrate our

diversity of gifts at Triennial, and see how theLord brings all these streams together into thegreat River of the Holy Spirit. Everyone iswelcome and all are needed, so we can more

clearly see the fullness of our ministrytogether as Daughters of the King.My first Triennial was in 1991 in Phoenix,

and I was thrilled and excited. Then came

Indiana, and I said 1 could not miss another

Triennial event! Next came Philadelphia, andon to New York and Church of the

Resurrection—our birthplace. Then cameDenver, rejoicing on the mountaintop! Nowcomes Minneapolis, and the headwaters of the

Mississippi greet us for Streams of Living

Water.

Give yourself the gift of our TriennialRetreat 2003. See old friends and make new

ones. Meet missionaries, council members, Jr.

DOK; explore the workshops, see theMinneapolis sites, and enjoy the triennial

experience. As Jesus said, "Whoever drinksthe water that I give will never thirst again."John 4:13

Next Royal Cross will have Junior DOK

details, registration information, and much

more!

Nominations for National Council OfficesIt is time to be thinking of nominations for

election to National Council at Triennial 2003

When considering Daughters as candidates forelection, it is important to think about what

spiritual gifts as well as talents they wouldbring to the Council. It is a real privilege to beelected to Council but with it carries the

responsibility in helping make decisions forthe work of the Order to be carried out.

Prayerfully, seek God's guidance before askinga Daughter if she is willing to stand for

election.

As stated in the National Handbook on Page

66: "Each Diocesan Assembly may nominate

one member of the Order for election to

National Coimcil, having obtained her consent.

The name and qualifications of the membernominated must be sent to the National Office

by January 1 of the National Convention year."Eligibility for nomination: To be eligible for

election to National Council, a Daughter must

be current in the payment of dues, must have

held some office in a chapter, diocesan

assembly or provincial assembly, and must

have been a member of the Order at least three

(3) years."

April Executive Board MeetingThe Executive Board met at the National

Office, April 14-16, 2002, with all memberspresent except for our Advisor, Ethel Ripley.President Joan Millard called our

meetings to order after times of spiritualreflection and prayer.

Highlights of the business discussedincluded: Our accountant Mr. Earls gave his

report on the financial status of the Order. He reported that tremendous progress hadbeen made since September 1 to reduce thedeficit. However, there is still a long way to

go to eliminate operating with a deficit. Herecommended an increase in dues and

lifetime memberships. Extra contributions ofapproximately $40,000 have been given. Hestressed the need for more office staff.

The Order continues to grow rapidly.

Since September 1, 2001, 76 new chaptershave been added. Praise God!

Linda Van, director of operations, updated us on the office workload andagain stressed the need for more office help.

The change over to the new computer system,

and training has been very time-consumingand created a backlog of data to be entered in

all areas of the office.

A total of 9,347 members are not current on

their dues. This creates a continuing deficit

and is very time consuming for the staff to getthe second dues notices out, at a cost of

approximately $3,000 in

extra postage alone.

First Vice President, ^Sharon Lundgren, ; ^

Notes from the Treasurer

Here are excerpts from a letter I recentlyreceived from Linda Harris of Farmington,

NM, which I want to share with you:

"I was in Spring, Texas, visiting my

daughter and her family and I called SharonLundgren. I shared with her that God hasbeen telling me that I needed to give $10.00someplace to help. When I got my Royal Crossand read about the shortage to the GeneralOperating Fund, I realized that this was myanswer to God's request. I know $10.00 isn'ta lot, but that's what God told me to give. I

belong to the St. Anne and Joachim Chapterof the Daughters of the King."

Thanks be to God for people like Lindawho hear and listen to His call to them and

graciously, lovingly, and generously respondto that call. So far, we have received about

$40,000 this fiscal year in contributions forwhich we give thanks. We continue to be lowin the Operating Fund because dues havebeen slow in coining in.

Spring 2002

I am sure you don't like to hear about

financial problems in the Royal Cross. Neitherdo 1.1 sincerely wish that I didn't have to sayanything about finances at all. I wish wedidn't have a problem. But we do, and I

would be remiss if I didn't relay this message

to you and ask for your help.

By the time you receive this issue of theRoyal Cross, it will be time to pay dues for thenext fiscal year, beginning September 1. It

will be a tremendous help to us if you willsend your dues in on time so we will knowwhat we have to work with and so that we

will not have to send reminders. It is very

expensive to send dues notices and thatmoney could be used for other purposes. Acontribution to the Operating Fxmd in

addition to your dues will be greatly

appreciated and used wisely. We pray dailyfor God to show us what to do in all of our

operations.

for Junior Daughters of the King. This conceptof prayer must continue and should be aninternational day of prayer for JuniorDaughters everywhere and all children. Thetheme still echoes—children praying for andwith children; the missing, the abused, thehungry, the imprisoned, and alsomemorializing those who have died.

We can not think that because we do nothear about the final results of a child that was

missing being found, or one that was abusedor hungry being comforted, or the one inprison we have not yet gone to visit, that weshould think that our prayers were of noavail. At most we will never know that God

has heard our prayers and answered them.We may never know until we get to heavenhow some child was saved because another

child prayed. I believe you children need toknow that God answers the prayers ofchildren. You must trust, love, obey, andserve Him. He answers your prayersaccording to His good will for you.

If you are praying for yourself, your family, your friends, or children around the world, please do not stop! Jesus loves and cares foryou and you should care for others. Prayingleads to action.

Daughters and their events. I can help youlocate a nearby chapter with which to shareprayer needs and service ideas. Our president, Joan Millard, has asked us

to be in prayer for our nation, its servicepersonnel, and the cause of peace. When over21,000 women are in prayer, the support ispowerful. Even if we are not able to be active, zve can pray. Prayer is our first vow as

Daughters.Slowly I will be in touch with those for

whom I have an address, a telephone

What Kind of Stream Are You?It is not too early to begin to prepare for Triennial 2003—Streams of Living Water, John 7:38,

so I ask you to share a journey with your Sisters in Christ.

What kind of a stream are you?Are you a free flowing, clear, deep bubbling with energy stream? Are you a cloudy, silt clogged, slow moving shallow stream?

Are you a struggling, boulder blocked to a narrow flowing stream?Carol Gaskill Are you a filled with twigs, leaves, branches, or possibly the whole tree keeping you from

Are you an underground, hard to find desert stream? Are you one of the thousands upon thousands of streams that flow in a thousand different

Find your stream and don't worry if it changes every so often. It is not meant to be the sameway all the time.

The important thing is to know who to go to when help is needed and when it is your turn tohelp another stream.

So let us journey together finding our streams, sharing our streams, and creating a crescendoof Living Waters.

Three National Board members: Doris

provided the enthusiasm behind this new

chapter and two Episcopalian Daughters, PatDooley and Agnes Wickersham, helpedprovide the training and their chapterprovided a beautiful reception. On March 28 we buried one of our sisters,

Tracey Moger, who died after giving birth toher fourth child, a beautiful little girl. Traceywas a founding member of the Virgin ofGuadalupe Chapter at St. Cyril of AlexandriaRoman Catholic Church in Houston, TX. In

her memory, we are collecting donations to

purchase a white DOK vestment to be worn

by our clergy when our current greenvestment is not the correct color. Please send

your donations made out to "Daughters of the

a beautiful job for us in the past.On September 28, the Fall Assembly of the

Watch for more details this summer.

With spring in bloom, I close with a

scripture from Romans 5: 3-5 which speaks of

hope. "... we know that affliction makes forendurance, and tested endurance for tested

virtue, and tested virtue for hope. And this

hope will not leave us disappointed, because

the love of God has been poured out in ourhearts through the Holy Spirit who has beengiven to us."

Floating an Evangelism BoatUpon the Contemplative Stream

Richard Foster has said we travel several

different types of streams at different times inour lives.

In considering our pledge to evangelize

(that is, to spread Christ's Kingdom) not onlyas Daughters but as Christians, it occurs to

me we may evangelize through all the

streams, or traditions.

Evangelizing through the contemplativestream is where we prepare our little boat for

its travels. This preparation is crucial as it

determines how well we will evangelize andhow deeply we will draw strength from the

gifts of the contemplative stream. How do we prepare our boat for an

unknown, terrifying, sorrowful, joyful, peaceful, turbulent journey? Well, perhaps it

is rather like a personal "garage sale." Have

you been to, or organized a garage sale? There are items there so worthless they are

just being tossed out. We have garbage and

excess baggage that we must jettison; we

must release, in order to navigate the

contemplative stream. Our little boats will beswamped if we do not continually "garagesale" our way out from under old hurts, angers, fears, and sorrows. We need a light, trim craft to "go with the

flow," to open our hearts, minds, and actionsto Him. To obtain "Shekinah" —to rest in

God's Presence, to know the joy of Jesus is

nearly to burst with love of Him.Consider some of those persons whom

Foster includes as members of the

contemplative tradition. Are they not thevery manifestations of qualities for whichDaughters must strive by the very nature ofour vow and motto?

John of the Cross (1542-91)—We know

more of Shakespeare than of John of theCross, yet his The Dark Night of the Soul, speaks so clearly to Daughters who haveendured and prevailed through pain andloss.

What Daughter does not long for the lifedescribed by Thomas Kelly, the Quakercontemplative, who claimed, "Life from the

Center is a life of unhurried peace andpower. It is simple, serene, amazing,

triumphant, and radiant." Oh, to attain that

Center!

And consider Clare of Assisi and her Poor

Clares (poor ladies). They founded an orderbased upon Jesus' poverty, their own work, and freewill love offerings to support them.No fund-raising for them, either! Actually, there are those who believe Clare of Assisi

wrote the "Instrument of Peace" prayer that

is usually attributed to St. Francis.

Madame Guyon (1648-1717) may surelyinspire all Daughters. She wrote beautifullyand influenced John Wesley, Watchman Nee,

and William Cowper. Two lines of a poemshe wrote from prison have burnedthemselves into my brain, "My very dungeon

walls are dear because the God 1 love is

here"—Such faith, such love! We maysubstitute many phrases—"my walls of pain

are dear—my walls of frustration are dear—

my walls of bruised ego are dear..." Howbeautifully may Jesus write upon our hearts

when we prepare a place for him to do so byclearing the decks, trimming the sails, andsteering our craft through the stream of

contemplation. We thank our Gracious Lord for the

examples who have gone before us—Marywho "pondered all these things" even as ateenager and for the veryleader of the contem- Iplative tradition, Jesus of I yNazareth, whose Gospel I Mis one of love and peace.

God grant theDaughters

journeys Jwithin the

stream, and

may our sails befilled with, and onlyfilled with, the pure and mrighteous Breath of God.

A Year of Challenge and Change

Linda Van

Director of Operations

There is a true sense of disbelief when I

realize that almost a full year has passed sinceI came to the National Office in Woodstock.

So much has occurred in such a short time.

The chapel is complete now with a lovely altarand the Cross of the Order mounted behind it.

The Stations of the Cross have been placed onthe adjoining wall. With the blessing from apriest and celebration of Eucharist, our chapel

has become a quiet,

peaceful dwelling place

for the Lord. I have

traveled to Kanuga, NC,

and Houston, TX, and it

has been my pleasure to

meet Daughters fromacross our nation. It has

been a year of transitionsthat included new soft-

blessings, and grace. Godcertainly has blessed me

with a wonderful staff. It

has been a joy workingwith Sharon Stills,

Dorothy Elway, KathyRoonan—our full time

staff, and Lani Baxter,

Nadine Pope, Gail Little,

and Janis DeCoster—our

part-time people. These are women of grace, joy and love with a lively sense of humor. Each is dedicated to serving the Daughters ofthe King in their daily tasks and each has

special, God-given gifts. Working at theNational Office is not only their job, but it is

also their ministry of service. I have grownprofessionally and personally working withthese ladies.

Our computer woes at the National Officehave grown by leaps and bounds. It is truethat when you are stretched beyond yourcapabilities, you will leam and grow. A large

portion of our hardware has been replacedand the software has been upgraded to newerversions. The implementation of new software

to handle membership and finances has pro

vided the national office with a huge oppor

tunity for growth. The staff continues to findnew and better means of handling the extra

ordinary growth of the Daughters of the King.Active membership at the end of April stands

at 21,821 members. The downside of that

growth has been a marked downturn inproductivity. Problems with the software

have caused errors in chapter lists, contribution acknowledgements, dues receipts, andlost data. We pray the Daughters will continue to understand and be patient while we

work through these problems to viablesolutions. We also ask for your help in certainareas:

1. Please print legibly or type yourcommunications to us. It is very importantthat we are able to enter the correct spelling of

cannot read what you have sent, we cannot act

upon it.

2. Use the forms provided in the national

handbook. Review the forms for correct

information and required signatures beforemailing to the national office. Please signlegibly. A complete telephone number requires

an area code and a complete address requires azip code.3. Provide complete and accurate information

about diocesan and chapter officers to thenational office.

4. Anyone interested in starting a new senioror junior chapter should immediately contactthe National Office and her diocesan presidentand stay in touch constantly with the diocesanpresident during this initial stage of start up.Following the correct procedures at thebeginning insures a smooth institution of achapter and admission of Daughters.5. Please allow six weeks for orders. It is not

always a case of just putting a handbook in anenvelope to mail. A new chapter requires a lotof paperwork at the National Office. All ordershave to be reviewed for accuracy of information

and payment. We carmot ship orders with shortpayments or incomplete forms. Because we areshipping approximately twenty to thirty ordersa day, we ask that you assist us by sendingyour orders in a complete and timely manner.6. Please do not staple your documents. It

slows the process of handling your order and/or payment.

When things go awry, we appreciatereceiving notification from you. Wrong

addresses, receiving dues notices

when you have paid, not

receiving your copy of The RoyalCross, etc., can only be fixed if

you let us know—so keep intouch.

Future hopes include an

expanded updated website toinclude forms, to complete theconstruction of the chapters page,

an archives page, and a page withmore information about starting

new senior and junior chapters. I

would also like to have all our

literature stored in our computer

so that revisions and printing canbe done more easily and with less

expense. A physical reorganization of our work area used to

fill and ship orders, complete

with cabinets and bins, is on the

list for this next year.

I consider it a privilege to workat the National Office and 1 am

truly impressed by the Order andall the women who are Daughters

of the King. Your dedication toprayer and service, your financialsupport for missions, and yourspirituality are beyond any that Ihave encountered to date. I

commend all the Daughters for all

they do, and 1 feel honored to be asmall part of your organization.

President Joan Millard (above)

keeps up with some of her"queenly" duties by signingcharters for new chapters.

Dorothy Elway (below) fills herwagon more than once during theday with packages to be mailed.

Self-Denial Fund at Work

Five Talents Works in UgandaA

Thanks to the Daughters of the King Self-DenialFund and its generous gift of $4,000 in 2001, FiveTalents International was able to help more than28 poor entrepreneurs, mostly women, in theDiocese of Kigezi, Kabale, Uganda. The loans givenout averaged about $140 US dollars and are

enough for mothers like Joyce whose husband diedof AIDS to start a clothing business to support herfive children. Below is a story and an update thatcan be used in any publication you wish. We aregrateful for your prayers and support.God Bless,

Craig Cole, Executive DirectorFive Talents International

Lydia Tushabe enjoys being in business. Shestarted out with a little hair salon in a little

room by the side of a road that nms intoKabale. With her loan from the Five Talents

funded program she was able to open a retailshop with primary sales in bananas. Lots ofbananas. She purchases in bulk and then actsas a wholesaler, selling smaller quantities toothers, who in turn sell the bananas in area

village markets. "I very much like the groupweekly meetings where we talk aboutbusiness and then pray to God that Hecontinue to strengthen us," she said.

Lydia's family is just one of the 350 familiesbeing helped by the Diocese of Kigezi—FiveTalents International program that promotesand provides micro-business training andmicro-credit loans to poor entrepreneurs. Theprogram also integrates biblical teaching onstewardship and business values. The Dioceseof Kigezi is located in the Kabale District inthe southwestern part of the coimtry near theRwanda border. The unemployment rate ishigh and there are more than 50,000 AIDS/

Page 16

HIV orphans. In February and March 2002, a team visited

the Diocese of Kigezi to support the six-monthold program. Mr. Craig Cole, ExecutiveDirector, Five Talents International; Mr.

Everett Post, a Five Talents programconsultant; Ms. Shirley Black, a member of theFive Talents Advisory Coimcil; and Mr. BobHiett, a proposal writer made up the team. Each of them represented a different church inNortihem Virginia, including Immanuel on theHill, Alexandria, VA; Truro Episcopal Church,Fairfax, VA; All Saints Episcopal Church,Woodbridge, VA.; and Holy ComforterEpiscopal Church, Vienna, VA."I was touched by how hard the people

work," Hiett said. "It's amazing how muchthey can do with so little."

Besides visiting with the families benefitingfrom the program, the group spent hoursworking with the Five Talents East AfricanRegional Director, the Rev. Jonathan

Byamugisha, drafting a plan that has as itsgoal making the Five Talents program self-sufficient in three years. This means that theinterest and fees paid along with the principalof the loan will cover all the operational costsand there will still be funds left for loans. This

three-year plan was replicated in the Dioceseof South Rwenzori and the Diocese of

Namirembe in Uganda.Five Talents is also funding micro-

enterprise development programs in India,Philippines, Bolivia and other countriesaround tiie world. For more details go to theirwebsite at www.fivetalents.org or call 703-242-6016 or 1-800-670-6355.

Kijabe Hospital, Kenya, East Africa

"With gratitude to God, faith in Christ Jesus,

and dependence on the Holy Spirit, I publiclyprofess my intent to practice medicine for theglory of God." This was the Christian physicianoath I took long ago. This becomes more real tome as I serve as medical missionary at KijabeHospital in Kenya. For the past three years, I

have sought to practice medicine for the gloryof God. God has taught me many lessons aboutHimself through the patients He brought to mypath.

I met Grace during my first month at Kijabe.During our first office visit, it was clear to me

that Grace had end-stage cervical cancer.Patients like Grace come in great number to

Kijabe. Most often, their medical problems arefar more complex than all of us are trained tohandle. I came home that day with deepsorrow because I felt completely powerless. I

could see the pain in Grace's eyes and thedisbelief in her voice that I, the great doctorfrom America, could not give any curative

treatment.

You see, Grace was only 31 years old and

had 5 small children at home. Through Grace,

God taught me that He did not bring me toAfrica to offer physical healing for all mypatients. The most important thing was that Istood there, holding Grace's hands, prayingwith her. I told Grace that Jesus loves her and

He is the only one who can give her true hopeand a complete cure.Grace died shortly thereafter, rejoicing in the

knowledge of our loving heavenly father. Afterher death, I couldn't pretend any longer that Iam going to heal everyone who came to Kijabe. From that moment, I became deeply aware that

our medical endeavors and the mission of the

cross are completely intertwined.Gundi came to see me just a few months ago.

She is only 14 years old and has been drippingurine for one year since the birth of herstillborn child. Her husband brought her back

to her parents' house and took another wife. After three months, her family built her a small

hut to stay insince they, too, \

could not stand . J Y

the smell. There 4 ̂in the small dark pR •hut, Gundi ^

her own

shadow.

Gimdi suffered from a vesicovaginal fistula,a hole between the bladder and vagina, resulting from the obstructive labor she

underwent. Since there were not any hospitals

around where she lived, she tried to have the

baby at home. After 3 days of hard labor and 12hours of pushing without success, the stillbornbaby finally passed a day later. As she waslying in complete exhaustion, she noticed urinecoming out through her vagina. As she walked,

the dripping became worse and worse.Vesicovaginal fistula is a devastating

problem for young and poor women likeGundi. They are social outcasts. Wherever they

go, they leave behind a putrid smell of urine. They are afraid to leave their houses. Mostdon't go to church. They are isolated, separatedfrom their tribe, their family and their society.

They are the poorest of the poor, the loneliest ofthe lonely. I often wonder how many young

women like Gundi are sitting alone in their

huts, without any hope for a physical healing, unable to hear the message of Jesus Christ forlack of any human contact. I am praying that

God would give us a way to find these women

and bring them back to Kijabe for theircorrective surgery.

Patients like Grace, Gundi, and many others

continue to remind me again and again how

much I need to depend on our God. Godcontinues to seek to set me free from mydependence on my own strength so that I candepend on Him. God's supernatural provisionis most recognizable when I find myself in awilderness devoid of any self-sufficiency.

Lives in Action

Some years ago, when I became a Daughter, afriend told me there was a thrilling lifeexperience waiting for me. She was correct! As I

travel I ask Province VIII Daughters (Junior andSenior) to share their life-changing experiences! With God's grace I have learned we all have

experienced the greatest blessings of our faithwhen our minds, our emotions, and our wills

are joined in prayer, service, and study for God.There are new lives in action all over this

Province. Retreats, small groups gathering eachweek to faithfully pray for the needs of others,Bible Studies, visitations, feeding the needs of

others, and the list goes on and on! Thesefaithful women present Christianity in the lightof their current day and world around them, sharing God's love and grace

As the Province VIII board travels this

geography-challenged province, California toAlaska, Hawaii, and Taiwan, our lives are so

enriched by what is happening in the chaptersand by our Daughters at Large!September 20-22, 2002, Province VIII looks

forward to our DOK Province Retreat at the

Menucha Retreat Center in Corbut, OR; outside

Portland, OR. The Rt. Rev. Edmond Browning,

Presiding Bishop-retired, will honor us as our

retreat leader!

Remember my Sisters, Jesus is calling each of

us by name and He is guiding us and our

communities of Daughters of the King.

By Ann Holmes, Editor

The Winter 2002 issue of The Royal Cross generated much mail-email and snail mail, and even a few phone calls. We appreciate all ofyour comments and prayers. Thank you!We also continue to receive pictures and stories about Daughters

and their missions around the world. Keep those coming as well, and we will endeavor to include as many as we can in upcomingissues.

A couple of suggestions: please, please, include the full name ofyour chapter, church, diocese (if appropriate), city, and state. Beinga relatively new daughter, I'm not familiar with where every chapteris located. I've been able to figure out which states are in whichprovinces, but I understand there are at least 2 states (Missouri andLouisiana) that are divided between two provinces. Including yourprovince would be helpful at least those of you who live in Missourior Louisiana. Without your city, state, and province, I can only guesswhere you are.

Another thing—and this reminds me of our prayer ".. .1 cannot doeverything, but I can do something.. ."—my something is theeditorial part of the magazine. I don't have anything to do withmailing address changes, dues, or otiier business of the Order. Pleasesend those requests to the National Office.

Here are some of the comments we have received:

Just finished reading the latest Winter 2002 edition of The Royal Crossand enjoyed every bit of it. Loved your article on yourself and how you gotto be the new Editor...

— Gwen Smith, Renton, WA

I am writing to register a serious concern with the poem of reflection on9/11 that appeared in this issue of The Royal Cross. It bothered me on somany levels, and I strongly feel that it should not have appeared in thispublication.. .So much of what appeared in the Royal Cross was uplifting. This was not one of those pieces, and I would strongly encourage us toavoid pieces like this in the future. If this were any other publication, Iwould be canceling my subscription.

—Rose Hayden-Smith, Ventura, CA

Reading the Royal Cross was such an informative pleasure. Having beena church secretary for part of my professional life, I appreciate your acute

juggling act.—Susie Copley, Charlotte, NC

I eagerly read every word of The Royal Cross which arrived yesterday.Thank you for a terrific job! I have been a Daughterfor less than a year andhave not really had a good sense of the worldwide scope of the Order. Yourarticles about the upcoming Triennial Convention, the Daughters inHonduras, the recipients ofMasters funds, and all thefaces with the nameshave helped me to a greater understanding of who we are and what we do.Thank you!
