Hi! What a fun packed term we have for you! June saw the arrival of Kaffe Fassett for his one day work- shop and an evening lecture. We were amazed at how quickly the class filled—a day and a half. Both events were a great success and very much enjoyed by all In August, Lisa Walton from Dyed in Heaven is coming. She is offering two workshops—one quilting and one beaded embel- lishments. Lee Cleland is also coming in August. Lee is a specialist ma- chine quilter so you won’t want to miss out on her work- shops. There are three one day workshops from which to choose, so I’m sure there will be something to suit all. We also have Robyn Alexander from Colourstreams along to teach her hand felted and em- bellished bag. This a fun workshop, guaranteed to get the heart pumping. Scallops, Waves & Weaves Ruler by June Tailor. These nifty rulers will allow you to cre-ate decorative quilt borders without the pain. The ruler in-cludes wavy & scallop designs for innovative edge treatments and 1” slits for marking positions on your fabric for weaving ribbon or fabrics.

Ribbon Embroidery Needle Set by Birch contains all of the needles you need to get you started with silk ribbon embroi-dery all in one handy little pack.

AppliBond Needles are ideal when hand sewing fused layers of fabric together such as appliqué. They are also helpful when doing the button-hole stitch on fusible appliqué. Each needle has 3 bayonette cutting edges and pierces the bonded fabric with ease.

Gorges Quilt Care Labels (that`s pronounced "gorgeous"!) —Any new, wash-able quilt needs a quilt care label. Quilts given as gifts are often given to people inexperienced in quilt care. The labels describe how to clean, store and display quilts.

Misty Fuse—by Esterita Austin is an adhesive-free fusible that is

sheer, bonds firmly when cooled and doesn’t add bulk to fused pieces. Because there is no added adhesive, it won’t gum up your scissors or quilt-ing needles. It is available in black or white and is suitable for all types of fabrics from velvets to cottons, tulles and organza.

Transdoodle transfer paper is non-waxy, non-staining, re-usable, chalky-colour transfer paper for clear guidelines that never set — not even with ironing — and simply rub out with the swipe of a cloth or in the wash. You get four huge 18”x 24” sheets, in white (2), 1 yellow, 1 blue— all to-gether in a handy storage tube.

Fresh Hope Patterns—The Fresh Hope Association has released a range of patterns designed by well know de-signers to aid in raising funds for the association. You’ll love the Beach Babe bag, Baby Kisses quilt, Land Ahoy quilt & Party Time table cloth.

Check out the new colours in Colourstream hand dyed silk threads, ribbons, velvet,

Tired of buying a thread and getting home and finding you already have one (or more!) of the same colour. Here’s a few tips to help you sort out your threads and keep track of what you already have. 1. Firstly get out all of your threads—don’t forget the ones that are stashed away with your UFO’s!!!

2. Sort them into similar piles—this can be by brand e.g. DMC, Needle Neces-sities; by fibre content e.g. cotton, silk; or by colour. (I personally prefer to sort by fibre content, brand and then size e.g. perle 3/5/8 etc as this makes substituting threads of the same fibre content and colour easier.)

3.Now think about how you would like to organize each of your piles. Do you like to sort by number or by col-our? Whichever method you choose, if you really want to be organized, this is the time to start recording your threads into your thread inventory.

4.Decide on how you will store your threads. Remember, your storage sys-tem needs to be easy to access and put away. Empty shoe boxes and biscuit tins will do the job. There are also lots of purpose made storage solu-tions available to help you get organ-ised. These include floss cards for winding your stranded cottons, Bag-Its for storing bulkier threads such as

wool, binder rings for storing thread cards such as Rainbow Gallery & Ma-deira threads, Floss Caddies, Stitch Bows, stackable containers and many more.

5. Label your storage containers for easy access and store them where they are

What is a thread inventory? A thread inventory is a method of recording & keeping track of all the threads you have in your stash and those that you add in the future. Did I say record all of the threads you have? I sure did, but don’t panic—someone has done most of the hard work for you and put together over 300 pages of checklists, listing most of the threads you will ever buy. So get yourself a notebook or folder and print off the pages you need. You’ll also find conversion charts, stitching tips, fibre & thread information and some free projects as well: http://needleartworks.com/FIBERSYSTEM/CCPPage.htm http://www.cascadehouse.com.au/catalogue.htm http://www.needlenecessities.com/catalog/catalog.html & click on the thread, then download the adobe acrobat file http://support.laurasbooks.com/list-needlepaints.html http://www.flowerthread.com/gtftorderform.html www.millhillbeads.com/index2.php & click on the bead inventory list Tick off all of the threads you have already collected and then check your inventory be-fore you go shopping or take it with you when you go shopping.

In Memory of Denise and Ruth

Recently we lost two of our dear friends to cancer—Denise Lawson and Ruth Stonely. Many of you had the pleasure of knowing both Denise and Ruth as students in their classes, customers in Ruth’s store and our store, through the quilting and embroidery community and as dear friends and acquaintances.

You will have your special memories of each of these wonderful ladies. I would like to share some of our fondest memories and how they have enriched our lives.

I knew both Ruth and Denise for many years. I first met them when I became a cus-tomer at Patchwork Supplies in Highgate Hill, Brisbane. Ruth was a self taught quilter and was a highly regarded textile artist and was well known for her unique style of patchwork, quilting and embellishment. She travelled the world conducting classes and exhibiting her work. Ruth’s store was the first patchwork store to open in Brisbane and she quickly developed a reputation for crazy patchwork, original quilts and fashion design.

Denise worked at Patchwork Supplies along side Ruth and was well known and highly respected among the quilting community for her exceptional quilting skills and published works. I was fortunate enough to do classes with both of them, which were enjoyable, fun and inspirational. As a customer at the store, I enjoyed spending time at the shop, browsing, chatting and taking pleasure in the friendliness and warmth they both offered.

Life became busy for me, Ruth sold the store, Denise found employment in other patchwork stores and our association lapsed for a few years. However life has a way of coming full circle. I bought the Quilters’ Store and our association was renewed. Ruth and Denise both came to teach classes at the store and Denise also worked at the store. It was beyond my wildest dreams to be a 'peer' of Denise and Ruth and to become friends with them both. Ladies through and through, they were delightful, charming, talented, and funny. They were passionate about their art and passed on their talents to enthusiastic and appreciative students, many of whom became life-long friends.

It has been a delight and an inspiration to have known them both and an honour to have worked alongside them. They are very deeply missed by all of us at the Store and irreplaceable to me personally.

Hi!

What a fun packed term we have for you! June saw the arrival of Kaffe Fassett for his one day work-shop and an evening lecture. We were amazed at how quickly the class filled—a day and a half. Both events were a great success and very much enjoyed by all In August, Lisa Walton from Dyed in Heaven is coming. She is offering two workshops—one quilting and one beaded embel-lishments. Lee Cleland is also coming in August. Lee is a specialist ma-chine quilter so you won’t want to miss out on her work-shops. There are three one day workshops from which to choose, so I’m sure there will be something to suit all. We also have Robyn Alexander from Colourstreams along to teach her hand felted and em-

bellished bag. This a fun workshop, guaranteed to get the heart pumping. As part of this years resolu-tion to get you sorted and or-ganised we have some hints on how to get your threads sorted. And if you are looking for an excuse for lots of fun and shopping , join us on the Coast to Country Shop Hop bus tour. If you have a little spare time, why not enter the pin cushion challenge, in support of the Fresh Hope Association or make up a quilt block or small quilt to assist breast cancer re-search through Margie’s Quilts of Hope 2007 Quilt Challenge. As always, Happy reading!
