Rate: As applied to the transportation or movement of goods and material, the cost of, or charge that applies to the service rendered by the carrier.

Defect: The absence of something that is necessary for completeness or perfection, or a deficiency in something essential to a thing’s intended or proper use. A product is defective if it is not fit for the ordinary purposes for which it is sold and used. Defects are generally of two types, latent (not apparent to the buyer by reasonable observation) and patent (a defect that is apparent on normal inspection).

Obsolescence: The decline of products in a market due to the introduction of better competitor products or rapid technology developments. Is a critical part of a product’s life cycle, and if a product cannot be turned around, it may lead to product abandonment.

Capability: The ability of a bidder to fulfill the contract at time of award.

Sales: The activity of selling a company’s products or services, the income generated by this, or the department that deals with selling.

Receiving: The function of accepting from all sources all items of supply used in the organization

Reinsurance: A contract in which an insurance company agrees to indemnify another insurance company in whole or in part against risks the first company has assumed.

Offeror: A generic term that refers to a person or entity who submits an Offer in response to a Solicitation.

Cargo: A term used to denote goods or produce being transported generally for commercial gain, usually on a ship, plane, train, van or truck. Nowadays containers are used in all intermodal long-haul cargo transport.

Oligarchy: A market situation in which a few companies control or dominate the market for a product or service.

Deliverable: The completion of a milestone or the accomplishment of a task. Deliverables are used to measure successful performance.

Outputs: The goods, services, and ideas that result from the conversion of inputs.

Requisition: An internal document by which a using agency sends details of supplies, services, or materials required to the purchasing department.

Chattel: An article of personal, movable property.

Resources: All natural, human, and man-made aids to production of goods and services.

Salvage: Property having some value in excess of its basic material content or scrap value, but is in such condition as to be no longer usable, and its repair or rehabilitation for use is clearly impractical.

Retailer: Intermediaries who buy products from manufacturers (or other intermediaries) and sell them to buyers rather than for resale or for use in producing other products.

Saving: That part of disposable income not spent on current consumption; disposable income less consumption; any income that is not spent.

Clarification: A communication with an offeror for the sole purpose of eliminating minor irregularities or apparent clerical mistakes in a proposal; may be initiated by either offeror or purchaser; does not give offeror an opportunity to revise or modify its proposal, except to the extent the correction of apparent clerical mistakes results in revision.

THANKSGIVING TRIVIA

November 2015

Was There Turkey At The First Thanksgiving? There is no evidence that turkey was eaten at the first Thanksgiving, a three‐day meal shared between the pilgrims and Wamponoag tribe in 1621. It is more likely that they ate venison and a lot of seafood.   Of The Three Utensils We Use To Eat (Fork, Spoon & Knife) Which Was Not Present At The First Thanksgiving Feast? The fork. What did they use to eat their meal with? A knife, a spoon and their fingers. The fork was not brought by the pilgrims. Governor Winthrop of Massachusetts introduced it 10 years later, but it did not really catch on until the 18th century.  What Is The Relationship Between Frozen T.V. Dinners And Thanksgiving? Apparently, part of the reason that Swanson started creating T.V. dinners in 1953 was because it needed to find something to do with the massive amount of leftover frozen Thanksgiving turkeys.   Does Turkey Really Make Us Sleepy? Not really. Trytophan does make us tired and it is in turkey. But more of it can be found in soybeans, parmesan and pork. So what is to blame for the post‐meal coma? Well, it could be the quantity of food over‐consumed. The huge serving of dessert could have an effect. Or it could be the amount of booze drunk midday  Do People Consume A Lot Of Booze During This Holiday? YES! It has been claimed again and again that the night before Thanksgiving is the biggest drinking night of the year ‐‐ beating out New Years Eve and St. Patricks Day. Why? It is the number one evening where people return home and reunite with their high school buddies. Or possibly the anxiety of being surrounded by family drives some to drink.

THANKSGIVING TRIVIA (Cont.)

November 2015

How Did The Pilgrims Make Their Green Bean Casserole? They didn't. Green been casserole came into being just 50 some years ago and was created by Campbell's soup. It came about when the company was making new recipes for its annual cookbook. Now, Campbells sells about $20 million worth of cream of mushroom soup, most likely for people to make the casserole  How Many Turkeys Are Consumed On Thanksgiving? An estimated 46 million turkeys are eaten on Thanksgiving (the birds weigh, on average, 16 pounds). That is more than double the amount eaten on Christmas (22 million) and Easter (19 million). In 2010, more than 244 million turkeys were raised and about 226 million of those were consumed in the United States.  Did Thanksgiving Officially Begin With The Pilgrims? It sure didn't. Thanksgiving only became a public holiday in 1863, when president Lincoln declared it so. Have Turkey, Stuffing &Football Always Gone Hand In Hand? Not quite. It all started in 1934, when the Detroit Lions was bought by G.A. Richards. Trying to build up the fan base for the team, he scheduled a game for Thanksgiving Day to play the Chicago Bears, who at the time were world champions.  The game sold out and was broadcasted live on radio. And with that huge success, the tradition began. Since then, the Detroit Lions have played 67 Thanksgiving games!  Did Fresh Cranberry Sauce Accompany The Meal At The First Thanksgiving? The first Thanksgiving most likely did not involve cranberry sauce. While there was a plethora of cranberries for the Pilgrims to feast on (being one of the few fruits native to North America), sugar was a luxury and was reportedly scarce at the time. Unrelated tidbit: The cranberry used to be called the CraneBerry, since it's flowering fruit bears resemblance to the bird.  750 million pounds is the forecast for U.S. cranberry production for 2011. About 30 percent of that is for Thanksgiving alone.  How Did The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Begin? The Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade began in 1924 with 400 employees marching off from Convent Avenue and 145th Street in New York City. During this time the parade was accompanied not with the oversized ballons of our favorite cartoon characters, but with live animals borrowed from the Central Park Zoo ‐‐ from camels to elephants.

Breaking the Turkey Wishbone: A Thanksgiving Tradition

November 2015

Curious where the wishbone-cracking custom came from? It all started with the ancient Romans (of course), who pulled apart chicken clavicles hoping for good fortune. The practice made it to England in the 16th century, where it was referred to as “merry thought.” In the New World, Pilgrims played tug-of-war with the bones of the more plentiful wild turkey, explains Kathleen Wall, a Colonial culinarian at the Plymouth Plantation museum, in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The term wishbone didn’t emerge until the mid-1800s, around the time President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday. What hasn’t changed is the rules: Each person grabs an end and gives a yank. If you get the bigger piece, your wish will be granted—maybe even in a snap.

Spicy Cranberry Salsa!

November 2015

Directions

Empty a 12-ounce bag of fresh or frozen cranberries into a saucepan and transfer 1/2 cup to a small bowl. Add 1 cup sugar, 1 strip orange or lemon zest and 2 tablespoons water to the pan and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the cranberries are soft, about 10 minutes. Increase the heat to medium and cook until the cranberries burst, about 12 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the reserved cranberries. Add sugar, salt and pepper to taste. Chop 1 cup raw cranberries in a food processor and add to cranberry sauce. Stir in 1 thinly sliced jalapeno, 1 tablespoon lime juice and 1 teaspoon each honey and salt. Let cool to room temperature. Just before serving, add 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro.
